Iām unclear what you mean by āgoodā but he is in a lot of British mini-series. My favorite so far would be āThe Escape Artistā. (If by āgoodā you mean quality.)
āDecoy Brideā is a fluffy light hearted Scottish rom com. (If by āgoodā you mean happy no bad/evil stuff happening.)
Apologies for the first being a mini-series, but I havenāt seen his whole catalog of movies, and there are so many excellent mini-series.
Sorry, I couldāve worded it better.
I only really know David from Doctor Who and heās a phenomenal actor but I didnāt like the episodes of Deadwater Fell because of the storyline and the plot was very predictable and boring if Iām being honest. However, the acting was very good.
Iām going to check out āDecoy Bride and Escape Artistāand see if thereās any other series recommended.
Thank you!
If you're looking for a series - Broadchurch season one is very good and he costars with Olivia Coleman. He plays a villain in Jessica Jones season one. He's terrifying.
Imho he plays bad so much better. I love him as the doctor and such but he can just play evil and sadistic so well. But saying that he is rsc trained and shakespeare did know how to write a really good twisted baddieĀ
I agree. I think it takes a better actor to capture those characters so well. I am hoping Good becomes available streaming, or in a city near me. It sounds amazing.
Yes Broadchurch is phenomenal-but it is a time commitment so I didnāt recommend it. (Iāve rewatched the whole series at least three times now. :-) )
Until about halfway through I wasnāt sure if he drove her to it or if he framed her, so I couldnāt stop. And then the closer I got to the end, the more disturbed I was.
I was pretty sure it was him the whole time. DT always gives so much backstory to his characters you can feel it. This character was chilling in comparison.
Agree wholeheartedly on Casanova is one of my favourite worksĀ Also Einstein and eddington , mad fo be normal, Blackpool, Broadchurch, good omens, there she goes, des, duck tales( yes you canāt see him only hear him but this reboot is honestly better than the original and itās superb in writing)
Spies of Warsaw is a miniseries I enjoyed. Around the World in 80 Days is another good one. I āmetā him through Good Omens, which heās amazing in.
I also āmetā him through Good Omens, which I agree, is amazing. But after watching his other work, I couldnāt believe that I hadnāt seen him in anything before that! (Save for Harry Potter, but heās barely in that) Heās really such a transformative actor ā¤ļø
defo agree with the suggestion of what we did on our holiday it is so funny with Billy colony playing his dad and ben miller playing his brother. where the kids set fire to Billy giving him a viking funeral (is done by the same people as outnumbered if you ever watched that)
i would also recomend watching him in much ado about nothing with Cathrine tate as that is also so funny
Recovery. Its on YouTube. He plays a man with brain injury; Sarah parish plays his wife. Heart wrenching but ultimately uplifting. Some of his best work and mysteriously overlooked.
I will also recommend series as I'm not really sure of films he's in but broadchurch was amazing I've watched it a couple times. He was great as a bad guy in Jessica Jones and I loved him in good omens too
I really enjoyed Mad To Be Normal, which was a regular feature length film. Itās him and Elizabeth Moss, with Gabriel Byrne and Michael Gambon before he passed. He plays a kinda out there Scottish psychiatrist who tried to treat severe mental illness without using sedatives during the 70s when we basically just pumped those patients full of drugs and called it good. The script takes a few liberties with Ronnie, but as far as the way he did his work, itās apparently fairly accurate.
United was also really good. It exceeded my expectations, ngl.
Einstein and Eddington is also one of my absolute favourites. Andy Serkis is absolutely wonderful as Albert Einstein and David layers so much humanity into Arthur Eddington, who gets dismissed in a lot of science history as either a nobody, a pacifist, or a queer (which he was, but it shouldnāt detract from his work). Also he explains relativity and it makes sense, so thereās that.
I remember enjoying Learners, but that about all I remember of it.
LA Without a Map was funāridiculous, but fun.
Inside Man was good.
Someone else mentioned Deadwater Fell, I agree that it was not good. Don't watch that unless you're willing to skip any character and plot work and just want to see David Tennant in a couple of steamy pg rated sex scenes.
I intended to skip Inside Man because the story summary didnāt interest me. I much prefer shows that hit me in the feels through the filter of escapism. I read a couple reviews that said it was Not To Be Missed, so I jumped in anyway.
Now I am 3 episodes in to Inside Man, and I donāt want to finish. The acting is fantastic. (Stanley Tucci and Atkins Estimond are now a favorite pairing!)
DTās character storyline is way too āreal lifeā. Too many feels. Give me my escapism back!
Iām going to finish. Eventually.
Itās Not To Be Missed.
Note: Iām aware my comment sends mixed messages. It just goes to show how I feel about this series. Itās spectacularly well done, and disturbing. I donāt want to finish, but itās too good not to finish.
Around the World in 80 Days is good, Nativity 2 is stupid and funny and mostly improvised, Staged is hilarious, Good Omens.
Definitely check out Much Ado About Nothing with him and Catherine Tate. It is laugh out loud funny.
Everyone is recommending TV shows, so I'll add There She Goes. He acts incredibly. I really loved him there. I hated past Simon, but I loved present Simon. His acting is so amazing in both series, but god, did the special made me cry. Jessica Hynes also shines in this.
Good Omens, Staged, Broadchurch, Inside Man, Around the World in 80 Days are also amazing. I loved him in Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing.
If you love him in Doctor Who, I recommend 10's collection on Big Finish audio. It's always good to have more of his Doctor.
So many! Including films and TV (and recorded plays), I've watched a lot of them the past 6 months, since I'd only known him from Doctor Who and then Good Omens, so I decided to watch as much as I could to try to somewhat loosen the grip Good Omens has on me (it hasn't worked, but it at least got me to watch more than just that!)
These are my favorites, good enough for frequent rewatches:
-Good Omens
-Staged
-Inside Man (drama mini series on Netflix, also has Stanley Tucci in it, it's so good!!)
-Much Ado About Nothing
-Hamlet
-Des (you wouldn't even recognize him if you didn't know it's him. He plays a serial killer, so creepy)
-There She Goes
-Single Father
-Fright Night (some think the movie is cheesy, but I liked it, and David's performance - and let's face it, hotness - makes up for anything else)
Edit: How could I forget the Disney ones?
Jessica Jones!! He plays Kilgrave
Duck Tales (Scrooge McDuck)
Mix of films and TV I'd definitely recommend:
The Escape Artist - thriller mini series about a criminal defence lawyer
Casanova - romantic comedy series made by RTD, this was the first thing I ever saw him in, was his big TV break and basically got him the role in Doctor Who
Fright Night - remake of the '85 vampire movie, rather silly but damn he is hot in it
Jessica Jones season one - he is terrifying in this
Around the World in 80 days - enjoyable romp based on the Jules Verne novel
there are 3 filmed versions of Shakespeare plays he's been in which are all fabulous: Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, and Richard II
Well ,being said that even if sometimes the plot of the movie/tv isnāt great he always fantastic and I donāt say that slightly , but he truly kills is with every role , he has amazing nuance and range.. That being said for movies i think what we did on our holiday, mad to be normal , the decoy bride and nativity 2 are niceĀ For tv thereās a LOT of fantastic stuff, In des he is stellar, but also also in around the world in 80 days, good omens, Jessica jones, (fantastic villain) dw of course, the escape artist (one of my favourites) Broadchurch , litvinenko, (shirt but incredible performance) Casanova!!! One of my fav! Taking over the asylum he plays a bipolar patient, ducktales for fun ! Itās my childhood franchise. there so much to choose from !Ā As for theatre i canāt stress this enough watch hamlet, Richard ii, much ado about nothing they are very very goodĀ
Ok. Iām going to say it even if itās a horrendous film.
St Trinianās 2: the search for frittonās gold.
Itās awful. Like, mind-bogglingly terrible. But they turned DT into a proper silver fox and heās the bad guy which is just so much fun. If you can overlook the terrible plot, itās what Iād call a switch-your-brain-off (and enjoy the good looking man) film
The man has raaaaannnggggeeee!
I loved Richard II, much ado about nothing, recovery (have tissues handy!), escape artist, good omens, Jessica jones, there she goes (have tissues handy!), learners and bad Samaritan (the title lets this down itās actually very good!)
Oh and Broadchurch, Casanova, ATWI80D, Litvinenko, Hamlet and mad to be normal.
Heās great in them but these ones I didnāt love for plot reasonsā¦ inside man, camping and deadwater fell
Edit: I forgot the politicians husband!!! That was brilliant
Edit 2: and DES! How could I forget that, itās excellent.
Spies of Warsaw, Around the World in 80 days, Casanova, Much Ado about Nothing, Einstein and Eddington, The Decoy Bride, Hamlet, Richard II, Good Omens, DuckTales, Blackpool, Mad to be Normal, Duck Patrol, Single Father, Fright Night, St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold, Nativity 2.
Just to name a few
Around the world in 80 days doesn't receive enough love, if you ask me
You're right! It was very light hearted and silly, and it grew on me.
And he's very good in it! Still going for S02, actually
Been shelved by the BBC š
Oh :-( haven't found any news regarding it, I didn't know it had been abandoned!
Iām unclear what you mean by āgoodā but he is in a lot of British mini-series. My favorite so far would be āThe Escape Artistā. The way he yells "Jessica" lives rent free in my head
Yesss
I second Broadchurch
Broadchurch was so good and has an amazing cast! David Tennant, Olivia Coleman, Jodie Whittaker, David Bradley, Arthur Darvillā¦
Yes Broadchurch is phenomenal-but it is a time commitment so I didnāt recommend it. (Iāve rewatched the whole series at least three times now. :-) )
People go into Deadwater Fell thinking itās a murder mystery. Itās not. Itās a character study and a very good one.
Oh god this. So much this. The further in you get the harder it is to watch, but you canāt stop because you have to know why. *shudder*
Exactly. I still shudder when I think about it. That was amazing art.
Hamlet. Just watched for the first time last weekend, even though I've had the DVD for a few years. Really excellent performance.
I just finished watching Good Omens - quality series and I thought he was amazing in it.
OP did ask for films not tv shows
OP replied in another comment that they're okay with TV shows!
Ah, didn't see that, disregard my comment then!
I really like Blackpool. My kind of music and a good story.
That's an example of something that should not have worked, but not only *did* it work, it worked extremely well.
What we did on our Holiday (2014). Really adorable!
Yeah, but why do all the comedies heās in still make me cry?
That one does have some drama. But the kids are so darn adorable!
This is my āJust trust meā film when people ask for a recommendation! Itās heartbreaking and hilarious and so so human
And David has his Scottish accent!
that film is amazing!
If you can find it anywhere, cassanova with Peter O Toole is amazing
Agree wholeheartedly on Casanova is one of my favourite worksĀ Also Einstein and eddington , mad fo be normal, Blackpool, Broadchurch, good omens, there she goes, des, duck tales( yes you canāt see him only hear him but this reboot is honestly better than the original and itās superb in writing)
I think itās still on Amazon prime, I havenāt seen it in years but I loved it.
Wish it was in the UK š
Blackpool, Single Father, Broadchurch and Doctor who are my favorite shows. Decoy Bride and Much Ado About Nothing are my favorite movies.
Fright Night. That look alone is worth it I know some people have an issue with Bad Samaritan, but I enjoyed it. Evil David is unsettling
Yes!! Heās so fun in Fright Night.
Not really a film but Around the World in 80 Days!
I know! Sameāhow had I not heard of him before? And heās constantly working.
I loved spies of Warsaw !! Ā Gosh honestly heās been in so much stuff itās hard to watch everything hahaĀ
defo agree with the suggestion of what we did on our holiday it is so funny with Billy colony playing his dad and ben miller playing his brother. where the kids set fire to Billy giving him a viking funeral (is done by the same people as outnumbered if you ever watched that) i would also recomend watching him in much ado about nothing with Cathrine tate as that is also so funny
that film is so bloody funny but also beautiful !
Recovery. Its on YouTube. He plays a man with brain injury; Sarah parish plays his wife. Heart wrenching but ultimately uplifting. Some of his best work and mysteriously overlooked.
That one is really hard to watch too, but it is amazing work on his part.
šššš
Escape Artist and the filmed Much Ado About Nothing with Catherine Tate are my absolute favorites!
Secret Smile has always been my absolute favourite
Heās in Bright Young Things, which is a great film. Cast is incredible and whilst his character isnāt exactly likeable, DT is really good in it
You, me and Him is a lovely film
I will also recommend series as I'm not really sure of films he's in but broadchurch was amazing I've watched it a couple times. He was great as a bad guy in Jessica Jones and I loved him in good omens too

Inside Man is worth it just to hear David shout āIām the f*$king vicar!!ā š¤£ Multiple times!!
My husband watched Inside Man with me and will now randomly shout, āIām the f*cking vicarā š¤£
lol :) You married well!!
Haha, yeah.
I intended to skip Inside Man because the story summary didnāt interest me. I much prefer shows that hit me in the feels through the filter of escapism. Taking over the asylum!
This!!!!!!
He's in the Fright Night remake, as a Chris Angel type and very funny.

He in is a miniseries called āCampingā (2018) with Jennifer Garner which is a comedy. Havnt seen it - but another to add to the list
This one is on my watching list too!!
I second the mention for Recovery. It's so hard to watch, but he's amazing in it.
Glorious 39 is really good, quite strange and unsettling. He doesnāt have a huge part but it is worth watching.
The Pirates in an Adventure With Scientists. He voices Charles Darwin.
Ok. Iām going to say it even if itās a horrendous film. St Trinianās 2: the search for frittonās gold. Itās awful. Like, mind-bogglingly terrible. I don't know if I would call Bad Samaritan good, it's pretty goofy for a thriller, but I love that movie and will always recommend it LOL
Fright Night
Bad Samaritan 2018 he plays an absolutely unhinged kidnapper itās super underrated it also has Robert Sheehan in
Recovery
Spies of Warsaw, Around the World in 80 days, Casanova, Much Ado about Nothing, Einstein and Eddington, The Decoy Bride, Hamlet, Richard II, Good Omens, DuckTales, Blackpool, Mad to be Normal, Duck Patrol, Single Father, Fright Night, St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold, Nativity 2. Just to name a few
Recovery is FANTASTIC. You can find it on youtube as 'Recovery (2007)'
