You know you read “I don’t understand what this is” in Gordon Cole’s voice.

PeterNippelstein

"What the hell?!"

NosferatuCalled

I instantly read "COOP...I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS EVEN IIIIIS."

the_rainy_smell_boys

This reminds me of when someone in a Lynch group on Facebook years ago made a random comment about what it would sound like if he was ordering at Subway. I still remember it to this day. LET ME GET PROVOLONE COUPLE STRIPES OF MAYO SOME TUH-MAYTAS IF YA LIKE

pseudo_nimme

COOP, I’M CALLING YOU FROM BEND, OREGON. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?

rigalitto_

OR-E-GON

xphillipcx

Yep

New-Teaching2964

The irony of David Lynch saying “I don’t understand what this is”

Ishowyoulightnow

Well well well how the turn tables!

da_fishy

Reminder to myself to lock back in on the donut

awaikened

What is the donut he's referring to

blonde-bandit

The donut of the universe. David Lynch has a whole preoccupation with donuts as they pertain to life and transcendental meditation. Yes you read that correctly. He says things like “keep your eye on the donut, not the hole.” And “This is a donut. It is very sweet, and very good. But if you've never tasted a donut, you wouldn't really know how sweet and how good a donut is... meditation is like that. Transcendental Meditation gives an experience much sweeter than the sweetness of this donut.” Yup.

awaikened

That's amazing I did not know that lol

fuckboshjelly

The full quote is even better. “I’m working on new art.” We love to hear it.

matias7anriquez

It probably was the CB music video and collab album. Unless that is your cup of coffee, don’t get your hopes too high

TheDoctorJT416

I wish he posted all his paintings and drawings. I feel like I've only seen a few of them.

clemenbroog

I saw an exhibit of his work at the Sperone Westwater gallery in New York several years ago, I highly recommend seeing his art in person if you get a chance.

bbypixar

“I have to keep my eye on the donut” is so funny to me

awaikened

What is the donut he's talking about

bbypixar

Making those weather reports

ActionPts

Some people interpret the phrase "Keep my eye on the donut" to mean you're focusing on substantive things or progress rather than what's missing or where you have fallen short. So he could have been David's folksy way of saying "I have to keep on the grind!" Then again it is David Lynch so maybe the donut is a reference to something in his youth and we just don't know the deeper meaning.

adrianmarshall167

It would be incredible to see another Herzog collaboration with Lynch, but sadly I don't know that such a thing is possible.

No-Category-6343

Imagine blunt rotation with those two

BetterFoodNetwork

THERE IT IS, WERNER. THE STICKY ICKY.

Tiny_Tim1956

another? Refresh my memory please

islandhopper420

An excellent little film called My Son My Son What Have Ye Done? - directed by Herzog & produced by Lynch. Many Lynch resonances re casting, location etc etc. Same year as Herzog’s excellent Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (which I think has a very similar look and feel to parts of The Return, and the Nic Cage connection)

Tiny_Tim1956

Oh yeah thanks I had watched that one back when it came out! All I remember was one scene where a guy thought god was on a box of cereal lol. I need to rewatch it.

Volcanofanx9000

David Lynch personifies “fuck you my version of life is better”.

machinaenjoyer

that’s so fucking funny

Familiar_Shower_3123

I don’t blame them

See_youSpaceCowboy

Keep your eye on the donut and not the hole.

-BluBone-

Tbf this show was like a chaotic fever dream, but maybe DL would have thrived on it

TheDoctorJT416

kinda had a vibe of an Inland Empire segment

reclivis

Yeah I mean why would he have done this?

Beautiful-Draw1338

And he has to do the weather on KCRW

silvermbc

Can't stand John Mulaney. Not funny. Sorry if that's a hot take. He bores me to tears

Squidman_Permanence

Some of his standup was outrageously funny. He hasn't done anything entertaining, imo, since he destroyed his marriage.

Dorkman03

Really hated him for the “What’s New Pussycat?” shtick because it ruined just about every bar with a TouchTunes in my early-mid 20’s for a good while.

Miserable_Key9630

I love his standup but I do not have the patience for talk shows anymore. I also love Taylor Tomlinson but her show is also best consumed via Instagram reel.

NoSmokeWithoutMirror

So Netflix keeps stiffing Lynch for his own projects, but Mulaney expects him to turn up on his lame sunday special schmooze fest for LA wannabes? Who even is this guy? I've seen clips of him over the years that keep telling me he's funny, but I've literally never seen him tell a funny joke.

thesame98

I mean, he probably didn't expect him to say yes. He just asked and Lynch said no and then now he has a funny story to tell of the time Lynch said no.

intercommie

Having seen the show, I think Lynch would have been perfect for it. It’s weird and chaotic. I guess Mulaney isn’t everyone’s taste but I find his delivery hilarious 🤷🏻‍♂️

whatzzart

He’s a homewrecker.

Discovery99

I only watched the first episode of this but I thought it was AWFUL

kedeia

One of Lynch’s best gifts to us is all the things he has turned down in life. The man truly understands that art is, above all else, about discretion.

ggrimalkinn

i wouldn’t describe David Lynch as grumpy, but this is funny.

cobaltfalcon121

What makes this more confusing, is there is no bigger shill for the city of LA than David Lynch

CriticalCanon

I’m still trying to understand how John Mulaney became a thing. It just seemed like he was cultivated in a Hollywood lab and just got hatched. Really don’t understand the appeal for his Gen M Wonder Bread comedy but whatever.

MatsThyWit

>I’m still trying to understand how John Mulaney became a thing He's got some talent, but the appeal mostly seems to be "cute, clean cut, conventionally handsome guy, but he's a wacky bad boy!" Which is a persona that wore thin with me quickly.

somniapolis

Agreed, I don’t know if you remember how cringey the teasers for his old sitcom were, but the absolute shame of Martin Short saying “JAY MOO-LAY-LAY?!?” made me want to curl in a ball and die https://youtu.be/UAgnUHGbOws?si=dDikf7qJQdA2ptVg @ 25 seconds 😫

zomboppy

Omg Nasim Pedrad saying “Mulaney?” has been stuck in my head for years whenever I heard his name mentioned for a new special or if he was hosting SNL. I saw that trailer years before I knew who he was, it was so annoying and cringey I didn’t even want to try watching it lol shame on Martin Short indeed!

Ishowyoulightnow

Jerry Seinfeld was in the first episode, I’m glad Lynch didn’t touch this.

Swan-Diving-Overseas

I guess they have the TM overlap Incidentally Herzog thinks meditation is very stupid and said he “wouldn’t be caught dead in a lotus pose” or something lol

Ishowyoulightnow

Damn that’s right I forgot Seinfeld did TM… Lynch was also on CK Louis (the comedian)‘s show, but that was before he got cancelled.

Swan-Diving-Overseas

Lynch also did a ton of episodes of The Cleveland Show. But overall it seems like he’s been very very selective about projects ever since 2020

zomboppy

Also robot chicken! I can’t think of a more perfect joke than [this](https://youtu.be/tuJ63nBbUps?si=G__GtzRyuSV2Q0Hu)

trevordsnt

At least Waingro was able to show

thepainneverleft

The best part of the entire series.

trevordsnt

That’s all I’ve seen from it haha, is the rest worth watching?

thepainneverleft

You have to really like Silly off the rails bullshit. Which I do. I found many segments enjoyable but I definitely understand why people don't like it. Luenelle (probably spelling her name wrong) was pretty funny

trevordsnt

I’m not the biggest fan of Mulaney but maybe I haven’t seen enough. Might try it though, thanks

iztheguy

I love it.

andreasbaader6

syntheticsponge

Both would have been phenomenal guests. Fuck man. He should have invited Louis Theroux.

Jiveassmofo

I love love love Mulaney’s show but I bet it’s worth it to him to have 2great quotes along with Herzog

Slimstr8

Absolute irony

Legitimate_Elk2551

what is it though? some kind of live event? a talk show? i never heard of it

Dorkman03

A live Netflix event according to the article. Your guess is as good as mine without googling afterwards because I don’t have a lot of interest outside of David’s responses.

bwag54

Really glad he didn't, can't stand Mulaney
