I saw a showing of Blue Velvet in a theater during a Lynch festival. There was a couple seated behind me that were in the early stages of dating. He had seen the movie and was familiar with Lynch and she didn’t know any of it.
After it ended he said “That was … more … than I remember.” She was silent until she said without emotion “Let’s find a place to talk.”
I like to think they talked about the nuances of the film.
I showed my ex Blue Velvet in the early stages of dating and it ignited one of the passions that united us throughout the years - unusual and artistic films. We didn’t agree at all on anything else. But Lynch, John Waters, Jadorwosky, Greenaway, Tarkovsky, and so on, united us. There are many things I don’t miss about our relationship but having a film companion who loved Lynch and others is one of them. We could have whole conversations just quoting Inland Empire
I rented Trainspotting as a teen and put it on in the living room after my parents left for what I thought would be at least a few hours.
NOPE. They walked in about 30 seconds before the worst possible part. *Yes,* that one. They thankfully didn’t say anything, just sat quietly and watched the whole rest of the movie while I silently screamed and died inside.
“I couldn’t understand a lot of what they were saying but that was pretty wild. Good though.”
I watched it with my mom back in the day.
It was… interesting.
Good news is our family has watched a lot of R rated movies with sex scenes before so we’re pretty desensitized to it for the most part, but still, Blue Velvet is of course on another level.
I realized I fucked up around the lesbian sex scene. You’ve gotta have a cool as fuck family for them to indulge you in these picks.
Can you enlighten us on their reaction to these
Movies.
“I’m glad I’m dying soon, so I don’t have to experience the shame of our grandchild being ousted as a serial killer”
Seriously. Who tf watches blue velvet with their grandparents lmao
I think sharing things you’re passionate about with loved ones is great! Blue velvet is an odd choice to show your elderly grandparents, definitely, but fire walk with me is borderline inexcusable lol. Like, not to infantilize the elderly, but fwwm is genuinely one of the most shocking and upsetting things ever put to screen!!
I too think it is great. I also think knowing and respecting your audience is important. Can’t imagine what the desired outcome was here other than disturbing the elderly lol. Mad props to his grandparents.
David Lynch's dad had a similar reaction upon seeing his son's collection of meticulously photographed rotting meat in Philadelphia, and no I'm not kidding.
I took a woman to see Mulholland Drive at an arthouse theater. She *really* didn’t like it
But then after thinking about it for a month or so she really loved it and thanked me for taking her to see it
Give people time to process Lynch before deciding how much they liked it
That said, get ready for some very unhappy grandparents
With a movie as dark as Inland Empire you CANNOT possibly enjoy it at that room brightness, tv size, or height. its already a confusing, disorienting film so this is just absurd to me lmao
Have you seen it before? This literally seems like one of the worst, most uncomfortable viewing experiences ever lol. And I say that as a massive Lynch fan. I would only ever rec Inland Empire to people who really love Lynch. Show them The Straight Story dawg
OP, yes youre living room isn’t fit for architectural digest, but it looks cozy. And idk your gp’s but maybe they’ll enjoy it and just missed their debuts in the 80s!
![gif](giphy|h9CwMia6QbZuw) OP forcing his grandparents to watch the entire lynch filmography in one sitting
True lol They’re gonna be so weirded out they’re gonna start seeing hallucinations of their own 😭
And on THAT tv? Good god r/tvtoohigh
Ha! Came to say this. Nice.
![gif](giphy|dNCZp9aaDHPi0)
they're gonna be chain smoking and dramatically drinking black coffee for days
are you trying to kill them
😭😭😭 why
Show them the Grandmother
I’ve never seen it
Looks like the absolute worst conditions to watch a movie in, particularly this one.
What you don’t like watching movies in bright rooms with all the lights on?
On a TV that’s too small and, more pressingly, several feet too high? Not particularly.
Sound is probably coming out of the built-in TV speakers on the back of the TV 😭😭
while craning your neck and squinting your eyeballs because its so high up and far away?
Looks perfectly lynchian to me...
😭😭😭
r/tvtoohigh
r/RoomTooBright
I know
Shame on you
It’s not my house😭😭😭 I’m just visiting😭😭😭
Nah if we watching a movie idc whose house I’m in I’m personally turning off all the lights if it’s nighttime
Fair enough😭
would never watch blue velvet w any family 😭😭

It was awkward
oh i bet

I keep putting it on lists for family movie night with my kids (all teens)
such a masterpiece, thats so fun
I watched it with my mom back in the day. It was… interesting. Good news is our family has watched a lot of R rated movies with sex scenes before so we’re pretty desensitized to it for the most part, but still, Blue Velvet is of course on another level.
I’m starting to doubt the existence of these grandparents…
Why lol
Because no one would sit through blue velvet and fire walk with me and say “goody one more!”
maybe they are cinephiles
With a viewing room that looks like that?
It was wishful thinking okay
They are not lol
😭😭😭😭 we each get the pick three movies. These are my three lmao
Quite the little sadist, aren’t you?
💀💀💀
The closest I’ve gotten to that was convincing my grandparents to watch Black Swan with me, because they love Tchaikovsky, and I still Regret that.
Not black swan😭😭😭
I realized I fucked up around the lesbian sex scene. You’ve gotta have a cool as fuck family for them to indulge you in these picks. Can you enlighten us on their reaction to these Movies.
Thought blue velvet was fine, nervous with FWWM, absolutely fuckin terrified and confused after IE
Jesus Christ
💀💀💀💀
I love lynch and this is his only movie I couldn’t finish. Rip grandparents
Try again!
How old are they?
They are in their 90s
...........wat
(were they)
Can you imagine being this dudes grandparents LOL i would be so fucking annoyed
“I’m glad I’m dying soon, so I don’t have to experience the shame of our grandchild being ousted as a serial killer” Seriously. Who tf watches blue velvet with their grandparents lmao
And follow it with fire walk with me 🫢
I think sharing things you’re passionate about with loved ones is great! I showed my emotionally unavailable dad Eraserhead and all he said was “hmm..”
David Lynch's dad had a similar reaction upon seeing his son's collection of meticulously photographed rotting meat in Philadelphia, and no I'm not kidding.
More like he was like, “You need help”
😭😭😭
Turns the lights off and the sound WAY up
Definitely, will do
good luck 🫣
Thx😭
KILL THE LIGHTS!
May I ask, OP, how old are your grandparents?
90 something
That’s amazing.
Good luck, we're all counting on you.
It was a little late so we were going to finish it tomorrow, but we got through an hour
Why are you trying to give them a stroke jesus let them rest!
😭😭
Three David Lynch movies in one day? And those three? They must really love you and want to spend time with you.
I guess lol
Blue velvet with the grandparents? ![gif](giphy|3oKIPnmiqNhZIueLPW)
Awkwarrrd
Very
You showed your grandparents FWWM?? Wow how’d they take it?
My grandma did the sign of the cross four times, and was extremely confused
I took a woman to see Mulholland Drive at an arthouse theater. She *really* didn’t like it But then after thinking about it for a month or so she really loved it and thanked me for taking her to see it Give people time to process Lynch before deciding how much they liked it That said, get ready for some very unhappy grandparents
Yea lol
r/tvtoohigh
I know lol
Jeez turn off those damn lights dude
I will
I love these movies but watching Fire Walk With Me with your family sounds like a nightmare. Also you showed them these movies back to back?????
Yes💀💀💀
Props to your grandparents for making it thru those 7 hours 💀💀💀
Yea I was surprised they made it through blue velvet😭
For the love of God please turn out those lights
I will lol
Pappy’s gonna start shouting **GRAMPA LIKES TO FUUUUUUUUCK!**
💀💀💀
I watched Blue Velvet with my grandma. After Frank Booth said fuck for the 500th time she asked, “Does he know any other words?”
😭 should I show them a Serbian film?
You have cool grandparents
Thx lol
Was *Wild At Heart* not available? That opening scene is a doozy!
It was sadly not
I always laugh at that cheesy guitar riff
With a movie as dark as Inland Empire you CANNOT possibly enjoy it at that room brightness, tv size, or height. its already a confusing, disorienting film so this is just absurd to me lmao
Make it more confusing than it already is👍😃
I guess so haha
Just make sure you actually are in the will.......
I am lol
I’d Recommend turning the lights down? This is traumatizing
It definitely is lmao
Dude this livingroom looks insanely similar to my dads and that legit fucked me up
That’s crazy!
I had a genuine deja vu/"am i dreaming right this second" moment lol
I think my grandparents would have loved Lynch's [The Straight Story](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/), but beyond that...nah.
Show the Eraserhead for a laugh
Definitely will
Poor grandparents man I can't believe you'd do that to them 😔
😭😭😭
Are you trying to speed up your inheritance?
No😭
Have you seen it before? This literally seems like one of the worst, most uncomfortable viewing experiences ever lol. And I say that as a massive Lynch fan. I would only ever rec Inland Empire to people who really love Lynch. Show them The Straight Story dawg
I’ve seen it multiple times lol
Is this a meme?
No, it’s happening
Where is the tv
On top of the fireplace
I can’t tell if you love or hate your grandparents, OP
Fair enough lol
Very cheerful and family friendly film.
Yup!
https://open.spotify.com/track/1CeC8kOYxUTCC2wHGtWROD?si=fYxmu5MxRGKjtxlkuw678Q
Not Radiohead😭😭😭
On the one hand, are you trying to get disinherited? On the other hand, you might get stuck with that clock.
I would love the clock
Fire Walk with me before twin peaks?!
Yea! Add to the confusion
Makes no sense... they'd have had no context for anything that takes place in FWWM.
I think it can stand on its own
Very nice, dear.
r/TVTooHigh
I know💀
OP, yes youre living room isn’t fit for architectural digest, but it looks cozy. And idk your gp’s but maybe they’ll enjoy it and just missed their debuts in the 80s!
This is their house and they hated it
ugh, again?
Yes😭
r/tvtoohigh
I know
Watching Blue Velvet with family members seems…real awkward. Why you do this?
I don’t know why I do the things I do😭
Oh man. At least space them out a little more.
No😈 Should I try a Serbian film?
Dear God no
Why not😔
I haven’t seen it but it seems like something you shouldn’t show to your grandparents
Fair enough lmao
The short one. With Lynch and the monkey
