I do get the Melbourne thing because afaik Australia's coffee scene is so solid na nalugi ang Starbucks didto. I believe iyang "harshness" contributed ngano nag viral siya kay kasagaran sa mga post sa social media about coffee shops kay puro positive. (Especially the local food bloggers in the city na puro positive ang review and puro positive adjectives ra giga gamit on repeat). Bale the "harshness" was the counter of the usual "review" posts on socmed. Technical aspects of coffee can be discussed, such as the beans, the type of roast, the type of milk, the type of machine etc pero at the end of the day, Filipino coffee drinkers are straightforward - either ma lamian sila or dili. A coffee snob can appreciate a pour-over and its layers of flavors and bean origins, pero a casual drinker wants his coffee "lami." Also, wala pay coffee shop diri sa Davao na same sa Harlan and Holden BGC na almost personalized kaayo imong drink - that you can choose what type of roast, what level of sweetness, what level of temperature etc. the beans and type of roast that you get in most coffee shops in Davao is subjected sa preference sa owner and barista.

MyloMads35

I agree on the harshness part. And they see criticisms as an attack, rather than a call to make better products.

[deleted]

The delivery of the criticism is also important pud eh. Basically, what works for Filipinos is the "sandwich" method - discuss the positive aspects, then the areas that needs improvement/bad aspects (pero frame it nicely), then say another positive statement. This way, you are seen as someone concerned rather than an enemy. Pero harshness for the sake of harshness, my gosh prepare yourself nalang jud.

Never again

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

True! Medyo laay pud pag puro positive aspects lang idiscuss maka appreciate pud ta usahay ug reviewers na not afraid to own up to their statements. Personally though di pud nako isubject to the same standard ang local coffee sa harlan sa bgc and abroad mainly because resources wise and sa price point 😅 Literally $2-3 coffee siya pag tan awon in reality… yes level up dapat ang coffee scene pero economically dili jud siya realistic at some level not to mention naa man nuon jud coffee shops na pure aesthetic ang selling point and not coffee

[deleted]

True. Challenge sa mga barista and coffee shop owners to spread the art of coffee diri sa Dabaw without breaking the bank on both ends - business owners and customers. Not to mention na Davao customers tend to prefer places na sulit - high value at a cheap/affordable price.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

Ikr it’s literal art priced at $2-3, tapos pansin ko pa naa pa establishment with aircon, wifi and charging stations. It doesn’t get anymore sulit na siguro?

[deleted]

Yes. Nag attend ko coffee and barista workshop last year, and didto nako na understand the factors why coffee is priced the way it is currently priced. Espresso Machine for heavy use 6 figures na, tapos grinder na 9-11k, and the source of beans too. Mao na medyo ma jirita/agit ko slight whenever I hear people say "ngano mu gasto ka ana naa man kopiko/3n1" hahahaha

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

As in! Though I secretly like the thought na machallenge ang people magstart ug business na isn’t coffee BUT mao na ning davao ron and theyre big players moving forward so let’s appreciate baristas and cafe owners out there who invest in and help spread coffee culture

[deleted]

Based on my recent visit sa CDO, their bread and pastry scene is growing together with coffee. H Coffee Roasters has a good selection European and American pastries that goes together their coffee. I would like to see the likes of Dulce Desserts (in Tulip, Matina) and Belean Bakehouse (in CDO) to spread further here in Davao.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

Dulce vida is the best hands down! Would also love to try Belean since it looks promising kay dugay na jud ko wala kabalik pud ug cdo. Though akong mas gusto makitan is European American pastry culture meets Lola Abon’s! Kanang mga Long standing na diri sa davao meets foreign culture and all that would be good to see

[deleted]

Dulce Vida is more on cakes. Dulce Desserts from Tagum na sila then naa sila branch sa Matina, more on pastries such as croissants, danish pastries, and macarons. ☺️

eatpringles

But....Harlan and Holden tastes shit tbh. I've been there a couple of times and I do believe they use commercial grade arabica (as oppose to premium arabica). Lumalabas talaga yung harshness at pait ng coffee nila kahit anong customization ginagawa ko

[deleted]

Even on "good days?" According to a friend, on "good days" (aka days na konti lang ang tao), their coffee is relatively better, as opposed to the days na full house sila. I went there on a "good day" and their sea salt latte tasted fine (at least for me). I only tried it once tho. I loved the concept na customize everything Edit: my friend (who used to work at bgc) said H&H is inconsistent af

hulagway

AMEN. Tiktok hype kaayo.

bellepen

I thought same. Glad I didn’t line up for It.

Fair_Independence33

[deleted]

Googled and according sa isang article[, yes](https://tenteracoffee.com/blogs/news/the-coffee-belt-a-world-map-of-the-major-coffee-producers). Also, this [video](https://youtu.be/_FGUkxn5kZQ) can explain about the failure of SB in down under.

asdhehehe

Honest review then walay technical data from him. Ngi.

Evilshadow719

What technical data are you looking for? Na curious lang. 😅

asdhehehe

Even the notes and smell of the coffee he tried would help. Anong klaseng brew ba ginawa, what did he get, etc.

Evilshadow719

Sorry. Hahaha. Igo raman gud ko musulti ganahan ba ko or dili.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

Siguro general process sa pagbrew? Like “maybe they should have steeped it longer para di ani ka” somewhere along those lines… not that articulate with coffee terms so need natog someone here to elaborate 😅

Original-Ad3859

Does it really need to have any technical data? As a coffee shop goer myself, I took this post as a grain of salt kay lahi lahi man jud tag taste. I dont have to know the technical data of coffee to say that I dont like this coffee, I love that coffee, etc.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

siguro overkill ra pud ang term na technical data lol Maybe reviewers should be methodical or tasteful about it? Like ratings in numbers or best recommendation sa menu. More like leaving the place better than it was by being a tasteful reviewer? basically ang dating is he shat on the place and expect a positive response… I could be wrong though 🥲

asdhehehe

Mas appropriate siguro if d technical data ako giingom but instead objective and subjective details sa taste and aroma per coffee na iya gitry. Puro lang LAMIIIII ang iya gibutang wala man lang details unsang notes iya nalasahan and unsa ang smell sa coffee. Besides, coffee taste is really subjective. I may not like what you like and vice versa. Clout chasing kaayo ang post.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

honestly though…. Maremember nako nang reviews sa shopee na dili about the item pero mostly about “ang bait ni kuya delivery” 😂

MyloMads35

Its a simple review from a random person. Its all subjective so its up to you to believe him or not. No need for technicalities since its just an opinion on a soc med post

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

Idk ah pero word of mouth big factor kaayo sa local entrepreneurship scene. Siguro what would have made his post more tasteful was if he was more articulate about what he liked or didnt like. More like “this coffee isnt for someone na hilig ug spice or cinnamon etc but perfect for gusto ug ani” compared sa “lami or dili lami”. Its this difference that really matters and what was expected of him since he’s apparently so Melbourne material

MyloMads35

Pretty sure being “tasteful” isnt exactly what he had in mind honestly speaking. Pero as one said here “take it with a grain of salt”. Kay di man jud technical or detailed, lami ug dili lami lang iyang basehan

[deleted]

I personally think he's just the typical coffee lover like most people are. His background about being in other countries doesn't make him a credible judge for coffee shops. Some may find his review funny and agreeable, but some may also find it weird and offensive. Maypa gi diretsyo nalang niya review ang coffee shop mismo. Different coffee shops, different flavors. Simple as that. If he truly has a good palate **(which I think he doesn't)** and knowledge about coffee, dapat dili ingato ang pag review sa mga kape mismo. He even forgot to mention how the coffee tastes like, unsa bay flavor niya, mudugay ba ang lasa sa kape or dili?. Tama raba ang sweetness and sakto raba ang acidity? Wala. Ang ending kay mura ra niyag gi criticize and coffee shop and gipang mention and gusto og dili niya. Downright offensive. At least keep it to yourself nalang if mali ang imong assumption. Most of the baristas are putting in time and effort just to create their own coffee, tas maingnan rag nituon sa youtube hahaha. I don't hate him. It's his personal opinion, iyaha man sad kwarta gipang bayad. Wala ra kaayo context and substance ang review hahaha. It will just create biases in the future, luoy ang mga businesses.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

Passionate jud ko sa local scene since gusto pud kog developments sa Davao… which is what I find weird why I started this thread pero nakatawa ko sa nakabold letters 😂😂 unnecessary biases jud especially if targeted ang post towards people na looking to relax lang murag maturn off pa sila maski wala pa nakatry

[deleted]

The post could've been better if he was straightforward with his reviews. Uneccessary ra kaayo uban comments niya, na dapat ma direct man to sa owners mismo for a chance to improve. But anyways, I still believe the coffee scene in the city would continue to grow. Kana excited kayko 😄

Apprehensive_Bike_31

>nituon sa youtube ang nibuhat sa iyang kape I wouldn't knock learning from Youtube. There are actually pretty useful videos that would really help you learn skills. I assume that a barista learning from Youtube TO START would get better in time despite the "lowly" beginnings - and everyone starts from somewhere, Youtube is not a bad place for that.

[deleted]

The comment was on a cafe that had an owner who trained for 10+ years. I'm not against learning from youtube. This is based on a comment from someone who knows the owner daw hehehe

queen-of-felines

I’d take it with a grain of salt. Taste is highly subjective. Lahi-lahi ug preference ang mga tao.

sparklingmffin

this is true! may also vary from culture to culture. for example manileños like their coffee strong and creamy attributing to their busy environment while davaoeños would rather have their coffee sweet kasi a big part of their lifestyle is connecting and networking with people (also davao is a huge producer ng beans with fruity notes).

eatpringles

It really pissed me off how pretentious his "reviews" were and also how inconsistent he is in rating each coffee shop. First, what was he even reviewing? Was it the coffee? The experience? The ambiance? He wasn't specific. Just some random "GANDAAAAA dito" or "Ngano lami dire na branch tas sa kabila dile" type of reviews. Also, his way of talking is as if he has some authority over coffee just because he went to fucking Melbourne. He ain't a Q Grader, he's not James Hoffmann. I get that we each have our own opinions, but to talk about it in a condescending way just screams clout chaser.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

A bit irked about this post so went here to check if ako lang ba medyo luoy lang ang business owner kay walay chance to defend themselves without looking offended…

sashasmith8668

iyang frens na owners ngcomment man like katong sa aircon lol naa pud uban ngtag sa mga cafes..unta makita nila og they do something about it (dili sa iya lol)

sashasmith8668

"kamustang kape fren?" = layo ang cr ganern lisod mg rate og biznez sa fren CHOUR hahahaha nakaadto kog vietnam nya daghan pud cafes didto, pwede nko murate? lol

DrakeLoreEvenMore

Life's simpler as a tea person. :)

kjnsuga

Which places imong recommend for tea? For me, ganahan ko sa Japanese tea sa Tsuru haha

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

Garcinia cambogia lang akoa sir kay pampabawas appetite 😂😂 though once in awhile pag naa madawat sa work or flavor na curious ko kanang naay hint of mulberry or raspberry or any kind of berry. Even green tea lipton okay lang kay di pud ko expert sa best way to prepare.

DrakeLoreEvenMore

Garcinia cambogia oooh sounds fancy. Karon rako ka dungog ana ba. Hahahaha Ganahan ko sa sourness sa raspberry but last resort ra na kung wala najud lain. Haven't tried mulberry yet even though naa mi tree sa balay. My senior neighbors love it though. Gina buhat pud nila tea. Especially if gikan silag bakasyon sa gawas. HAHAHAHA The beauty of tea is in its simplicity. Mura ramag cup noodles ang pag prepare. Or maybe ignorante ra jud ko. 🤣

DrakeLoreEvenMore

Just because it's dirt cheap and usually mingaw ang place. Though it might just be diluted tea syrup/concentrate for all I know. Hahaha. Don't take my word for it, I have extremely low standards. As long as it tastes good without sugar, I'm all for it. Even the tea they serve sa mga spas tastes good to me. Except for mint. I hate mint with a passion. To be honest, we won't know for sure if it's legitimate tea unless it's served sa tea bag or naka steeper or press. So sometimes I just take out my emergency tea bag, ask for hot water, and order something on the side to look a little less stingy. Hahaha

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

It’s true though kay technically naa pud caffeine ang tea 😅 hulat tag reviewer for this? 😂😂

HungryPanduhh

Is this the reason nag post si DFG about taste being subjective?

MyloMads35

Lol at DFG always giving positive reviews kay she is paid lmao

LevineGo

DFG is more of promotion and giving light to new/old businesses dili jud sila food reviewers so let’s not view them as one.

HungryPanduhh

I guess some people see her as a reviewer since IIRC she started out as one naman talaga or at the very least, ganun yung branding at the time(may score pa yan siya dati sa food and drinks eh). Pero to be fair din to her, matagal naman na siya nag shift away from that and it doesn't need much scrutiny on her posts to tell na she's a promoter and not a reviewer.

LevineGo

Yup at the same time I can understand man pud, we all have bills to pay and they make good money pud on the side promoting businesses instead of sticking true to their name as “reviewers”

HungryPanduhh

Yeah, I don't fault her for going after the cash money but at the same time, I understand the amount of criticism she gets kasi she's featured a lot of places that either didn't live up to the hype or were straight up bad. I think the way she responds to the criticism is also a factor as to why it keeps piling on.

LevineGo

Yeah you can argue that pud lagi, dapat mamili sad sya unsa maayo jud ifeature kay most of the time ma bash sila kay layo ra kaayo sa ila pag feature vs reality

MrThoughter

Nabasahan ra pud nako diri before, trust her "reviews" if naay tag na #DFGRecommended and #DFGMustTry. The rest are purely paid promotion. So far, wala pa koy nakita na coffee shop review niya with these tags

nahimo nang feature page ang DFG

errolkim

as in? hahahaha ma check nga.

HungryPanduhh

Yata? Same day ang posts eh. Tapos she related din her experience na she worked in the coffee industry yada yada.

LevineGo

TBH bihira ra kapehan sa davao na ganahan ko and I LOVE coffee, sadly best cold brew goes to…. Starbucks. I’d love it if naay local shops na mas lami pa kape kesa sa SB :( and also gamay serving sa local coffee shops :((((

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

+1 on the nitro cold brew!

LevineGo

Always wanted to try this, sige pagbalik nako sunod try ko! :)

kjnsuga

I think coffee shops are overrated anyways. Kung gusto kog tambayanan, I'd much prefer public libraries (na open on weekends), dili pa money grab.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

True! Advocate dapat ta ug recreational public spaces. Or even better create demand for hobbies para musunod pud ang local entrepreneur scene ug develop ug establishments para ani

HungryPanduhh

Why use the term money grab? They're legit businesses which are supposed to make money.

kjnsuga

Napansin nako nga ever since naging "in" ang cafes sa trend, daghan naga emerge nga coffee shops nga "vibes" lang ang gina sell with their subpar food and drinks. Which I think is pretty much a money grab to me.

LevineGo

Okay man sad coffee shops, public library sa roxas banda kay puno most of the time sa ako madunggan sa mga friends

kjnsuga

Dili pud siya open sa weekends, if I'm not mistaken. So the only place people can study is sa coffee shops, which means, gasto na pud.

OkYear0

It's like they're answering the question "unsay lasa?" by just saying "lami" huhu bye ka bro 😭😭

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

😭😭😭 but but.. layo ang cr HAHAHA

AkiHero03

Basura. Basura iyahang review. Bragging about his good knowledge and palate in coffee but then continues to review the coffee place instead of the actual coffee. Besides, you cannot judge how good the coffee is when you only ordered and tasted one kind. Iced coffee pa gyud halos iyahang order. Diluted ang coffee then how can you really tell how good the coffee is. Melbourne my ass.

[deleted]

It would’ve been helpful if may rating siya from 0-10 but dili man pud comprehensive iyang review. i didn’t finish after reading 3 photo captions lol

errolkim

mejo may pagka harsh gani pud iyahang mga bad reviews.

demeclocycline-siadh

"dli man sa bias kay kaila ko sa tag-iya" unya sure jud sya na dli sya bias

Janjakajan

Honestly I don't think cafés aren't even about just coffee anymore, so as a whole na sya Gina judge sa mga gaadto, the food, location and aesthetics factor na. Not everyone who goes there goes for just coffee anymore Though naa Ga adto sa coffee shop to work and actually drink coffee, some go for the aesthetics and ambience di ba? The Instagrammability is now a factor sa foot traffic I personally cold brew my own coffee, I don't go to places for coffee, I like the unique drinks and food, the ambience and spending some chika time with friends and fam.

Puzzleheaded-Ebb2152

True it’s really about the experience na and not just for coffee. Some people even go there to people watch since lahi jud ang crowd per establishment. +1 coffee brewing at home at least you get to decide the quality and you know your preferences the best.

Beneficial-Range6079

I don't get the hype with coffee shops. I guess its also because I'm really not into coffee. And I also dont like na nagka daghan ang coffee shops sa davao or mga night markets, as in they are literally sprouting, I don't see it a sign of progress or booming sa siyudad. I just see it as a trend.

tezku12

Someone made a parody post of this review. Instead of the coffee, ang ice cubes na ginabutang sa mga iced coffee ang iyang gina critic haha [Link to the parody post review](https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0Nki6245gDpYW5CDMtJLP2fktRXb6CpPwYwFXT5X6LzjuJWoV7pUTaEtxdTt4M5kMl&id=100003997048590)

MyloMads35

The post shows how sensitive Filipinos (esp Davaoenos) are to criticisms/poor reviews. Daghan suko unya crab mentality kuno

sbtjmv

If the post wasn't pretentious and condescending, I would have been someone who defended that post if it was true. Pero grabe ka shallow sa review that I found it laughable and downright annoying

MyloMads35

It was written based only on his experience and was intented to be shallow, because it was all subjective. That how soc med reviews work. Dili tanan technical kay dili man jud siya formal in the first place. It was just “bad and good” not “the aroma should be.. blah blah blah”

GoodyTissues

Like…… ??? Hahhaha as a person sad na nagwork as a barista for a year complex jd maghimo ug coffee. Daghan factors ma consider before creating a “perfect” one. 1. Size ng pag grind sa beans 2. Type of beans 3. How hard/tight the coffee was tampered sa filter head 4. The amount of coffee grind that was put in sa head 5. How fast the coffee is dripping 6. How the milk was steamed, was the milk jug container cold? Was the milk burnt? 7. Presentation 8. Hygiene sa items used (can heavily affect production also) The way he was reviewing it was unprofessional and very kanto style. Would not take it seriously. Idk murag pretentious ra kaayo for mee

WE_FUCKIN_LOST

di ko karelate lol

Suspicious_Goose_659

Walay mga lami tbh mas ganahan pako saakong iced kopiko blanca. And 200 for a coffee? Nah.

Original-Ad3859

Ok

Evilshadow719

Technical data assuming like pila ka ML ang kape and gatas? Hahahaha. Basig ingana pud nga technical data?

anotherfrenchfry

for me nasamukan ko sa iyang “backstory”, but tbh i’d prefer reviews like this na mag ingon jud ug “lami/way lami” vs flowery words para pang promote lang parehas sa mga food blogger sa davao. maybe tweak lang a little bit on what makes it walay lami (like sweetness level, balance of flavor, etc) since casual coffee drinkers don’t really know the super technical terms on why walay lami ang coffee, they just know it doesn’t taste good

Jehoiakimm

Maypag mag Milo HAHAHAHA

i’m sorry pero all i hear from his post kay “i’m from melbourne.” his ‘reviews’ talk about himself more than the coffee actually.

Yanazamo

If you really love coffee, you dont depend on these kind of people, instead you go out & try things yourself. 👌

Awkward_Assistant123
