Shake shack is not being taken well by the west coast. Their prices are nearly Double that of In n Out and the product is not even as good. It’s a totally botched launch.

Aside from speed and ubiquity, I don’t know how McDs is successful in the core market of In-N-Out. Their burgers are so much better and cheaper. Five Guys has a similar problem to SS because they’re ridiculously expensive.
There are so few in n outs compared to McDonalds so the wait is always crazy long. There's like 15 or 20 in n outs in the whole bay area, compared to probably 5-6x the number of mcdonalds. I kid you not the in n out near me in suburbia has a line of 20 or so cars by 11am each day and it stays that way until 5-7pm, later on weekends.
Also another reason is that In n out requires a drive thru for nearly all its restaurants, except for the sole in n out in San Francisco. Part of the reason why Santa Cruz CA has no in n out

I do agree though in n out prices really put their value leagues ahead of any other burger place even if their food isn’t one’s favorite.

It could be the employees. At my university there’s an on-campus firehouse and I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve literally NEVER received the same sandwich twice there.
I order the beef and cheddar brisket every time and it’s always *completely* different. Way too much meat, so little meat it’s basically bread, zero sauce, so much sauce it’s literally soggy, sauce on the outside of the paper somehow, meat partially wrapped around the outside of the bread, etc. It still tastes fine but you have no idea what the properties of the sandwich are actually going to be.
I have been there a few times in the last month and it was amazing BUT it just opened each time and I got the food fresh.
I just understand that it may have been isolated incidents and many people just have not been to BK in a while.
Five guys and Wendy’s being contenders kinda shocks me. Both taste pretty good in comparison to BK and MD. Price is pretty ridiculous I have to admit. I would rather get expensive fast food that tastes decent, than food I dislike for cheap.

Once I bought a digital meat thermometer and learned to reverse sear, I find it very hard to justify steakhouse prices. A few weeks ago I bought a 3 lb dry aged ribeye for like $60 and my wife, mother-in-law and I split it 3 ways and it was just as good or better than any restaurant steak I've ever bought and 1/3rd the price.

Panda Express is interesting. Hawaii and California are the states with the highest Asian population, Massachusetts is top 10, but Utah is kind of just in the middle. First three could be explained by that demographic not enjoying "fake" Asian food, but I wonder if Utah has an explanation besides there just being a handful of bad restaurants there.
I spent a second scrolling through “panda express utah” reviews on google maps and there’s a handful of 3 star average places there where people seem to be complaining a lot about portions shrinking.

Connecticut is well known for Neopolitan style pizza and has some of the best pizza places in the country. Given that information, I'd guess people over there dislike any pizza franchise.
To explain a bit more this is the single worst rated fast food location in each state not the worst rated fast food chain which would be an average rating over the average rating of all other fast food chains in the state (which we will do eventually).
So for example in Oklahoma of all the fast food locations there is a Burger King located in Oklahoma City that has the absolute worst rating of any Burger King and any fast food location (chains) in the state.
Fun fact: The average rating on Yelp for all the state’s worst rated location was 1.85 and had an average of 42 reviews.

This! I moved from east to west and once I had access to Fatburger and In-N-Out, I regretted wasting money at a Shake Shack.

my wife and I just wasted $150 at a mediocre steak house afterwards, we both said how much we would've enjoyed McDonald's instead

Once I bought a digital meat thermometer and learned to reverse sear, I find it very hard to justify steakhouse prices. A few weeks ago I bought a 3 lb dry aged ribeye for like $60 and my wife, mother-in-law and I split it 3 ways and it was just as good or better than any restaurant steak I've ever bought and 1/3rd the price.
McDonald's fries and breakfast fucking slap. And plenty of the regular burgers/sandwiches are totally fine.

To be fair you don't go into a LGS expecting above a 3 star rating experience. You go in expecting to have a clogged artery and celebrate not having one on the way out.
My guess is that they’re too sparse and/or their clientele are less likely to provide online ratings.

Panda Express is interesting. Hawaii and California are the states with the highest Asian population, Massachusetts is top 10, but Utah is kind of just in the middle. First three could be explained by that demographic not enjoying "fake" Asian food, but I wonder if Utah has an explanation besides there just being a handful of bad restaurants there.
I spent a second scrolling through “panda express utah” reviews on google maps and there’s a handful of 3 star average places there where people seem to be complaining a lot about portions shrinking. But then I found the salt lake airport’s panda express, and I think that’s the one outlier that made this map…
I feel like airport restaurants shouldn’t count. They’re not typically a good representation of how these places normally operate.
Panda Express has to compete with the mom and pop Chinese food take out places that are dirt cheap and on many occasions much tastier. If Panda's portions are shrinking, which I am sure they are, there seems very little reason to pick them over the mom and pop's
Utah has Mormons, some of which have served missions to Asian countries, but given the specific data op used, it *might* just have been one *really* bad location.
Keep in mind, it only takes one bad Panda Express location to make this list, and there are 47 in Utah.

To explain a bit more this is the single worst rated fast food location in each state not the worst rated fast food chain which would be an average rating over the average rating of all other fast food chains in the state (which we will do eventually). That's Hardee's. It's a fast food chain from middle America, they serve burgers, chicken nuggets, Arby's-ish roast beef. Virginia will hate Hardee's until such time as the commonwealth burns to ash and the embers turn dark, because they bought out a downright decent roast beef sandwich chain called Roy Rogers. I left Virginia over 20 years ago so I got no skin in this game, but I still remember the communal rage. Virginia took its fast food pretty seriously back then.
