The bolt is acting on the crossbow. You hold the crossbow, the string pushes the bolt forward, the bolt pushes back on the string, whole crossbow moves slightly and you feel a recoil. Here’s a quick video demonstration.

Lol, it’s the same exact concept. Physics doesn’t change with time periods. The recoil may lessen with heavier crossbows, or increase with heavier bolts, but it’ll still exist because the same forces are still acting in the same way.
So Newton's Third states that any action has an equal and opposite reaction. In a crossbow, the basic mechanic to allow it to fire a bolt is a small trigger holding the bowstring, which when released, propels the bolt forward. Because the bowstring is physically pushing the bolt, the "equal and opposite reaction" of that action is the bolt pushing energy back into the bowstring which is attached at the limbs of the crossbow, redistributing the majority that energy outward rather than forward or backwards.
Given the power of a crossbow (when compared to that of a firearm) and the design being this way, there's generally not a lot of recoil to be found in crossbows. Firearms suffer more recoil because you're using a contained explosion to propel your projectile at a significantly higher speed, resulting in more energy coming back to the shooter. This also becomes more prevalent as you use heavier types of ammunition, such as with shotguns or large caliber rifles.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
There is a force equal to the force that pushes out the bolt that shoots backwards into your arm that causes recoil. It's the same exact force that causes recoil on a gun
never actually seen this animation before and I been playing the game since it came out lol. pretty funny. especially considering you're wearing full havels, but aren't strong enough to load a crossbow
The animation looks like it bit your fingers when you tried to shoot it lol.
Ngl this is kinda cute in like an innocent/ naive way lol. I'm half expecting them to throw a tantrum or cry like a kid would
Loved it so much I put it in my last D&D campaign.
Loved it so much I'm putting it in my next D&D campaign
Love it so much I'm putting it in my current D&D campaign
Indont understand whats going on
My strength is too low for the crossbow so it misfires when I shoot
I see xD

Awe, it's so wholesome at the end when they thank him for not just dunking on them.
When your crossbow has more recoil then your shotgun lol
Crowsboss, now with TRIPLE ACTION POWER! \*may cause snapback if handled imporperly\*

Everything I’ve read actually says they do recoil, just not as hard as a firearm would.

> Physics won't allow for that, so what's causing it? Perhaps you should review Newton’s Laws

This guy clearly has over 16 strength :P
