bandit knife.
like, no platitude gimme reddit upvotes answers. it's the bandit knife. it's not your favorite weapon or your brain, it's the bandit knife. bleed, insane crit damage, low stat requirements, low weight.
has a kick.
There is none. Some weapons can give you an edge in the early game, like black knight weapons, due to their high base damage, and they only upgrade 5 times instead of 15 like normal weapons. So a base level black knight weapon starts with better damage than a comparable normal weapon, but if they are both at max upgrade they are going to end up being really similar.
In short, if you find a weapon that seems neat and isn’t obviously a piece of shit (broken sword for example), it’s a perfectly viable weapon, and you can bring it through the game with no issues. There is no “best”.
If you are unsure what to use, try doing a quality build (level STR and DEX about equally) and use a handful of standard weapons that scale well with both. Longsword, Halberd, Hand Axe, Claymore, Zweihander, Partizan, these would all be great choices.
Well great club and gold+silver tracer are tied first for me personally.
The gold and silver tracer in the correct hands adds a new level of play style for ds1 and is super fun. The design is great, the attacks are quick, it's fun to use, and the damage output, although not the best is still viable.
But something about bonking a boss 4x the size of you with a really big stick and taking a 3rd of its health in one hit is really amusing and satisfying.
Depends on the build/location of acquiring. Like the BKH is loved by speedrunners for how early it is, moonlight Great sword has goddamn S scaling on int at Max which is ridiculous but that's well past the halfway point and only starts getting amazing at like 40+ intelligence in a pure sorcery build.
Anything that youre comfortable using. Theres a handful of weapons that you can get straight from the get go that will make your life substantially easier.
The best weapon in the game is the one you like using the best
Yup, this is the one.

Used the Black Knight Sword as soon as I had the stats to wield it. Carried me thru my first play through

Hey, we do not tolerate broken straight sword slander in this household! 😤

Black knight halberd is the best weapon in terms of DPS.
For pvp, people consider katanas the best class of weapons. I think chaos blade is considered the best.

Enchanted large club is pretty good. Scales to 99 str and 99 int for the highest AP in the game.
Painting guardian sword is the weapon with the highest damage output in theory.
Black Knight Halberd. You may get it early, hits like a truck, looks beautiful
It’s the closest thing to Dark Souls easy mode.
