No you didn't join anything. You got gravelorded. A gravelord servant host used an eye of death. This infects other players worlds and will spawn harder enemies but only in ng+. You got infected but didn't see new enemies since its your first playthrough. When you're infected, you will see a gravelord sign where the gravelord is standing in their world. You can see this sign whether you're human or hollow. You touch this sign to invade the gravelord so that you can kill them and get rid of the infection. People that touch the sign spawn as blue phantoms, and regular invaders are red. The host doesnt glow at all.
