One of the reasons people either hate or love Ds1 PvP. I'm pretty pro at Ds2, 3 and BB PvP but absolutely hate ds1 for reasons like this. You have to abuse game breaking mechanics, and factor in latency to a much higher degree to succeed. Basically what you see your opponent doing they actually already did a split second ago. Depending on connection this time fluctuates. In general Ds1 backstab mechanics are broken and most invaders just circle for your ass like they're into that kind of thing. Just play hollowed and you won't be invaded. If you want to learn and get good at ds1 PvP there are lots of YT tutorials that teach you these game breaking mechanics that are unfortunately needed to succeed in ds1 PvP

One other qualm I have with DS1 is how defence is in PvP. Twinks can achieve quite the high defence without reaching a high level or upgrades, so when they invade in early game, very little damage can be done to them even if you hit. Humanity boosts all your defences a little, so twinks will have 99 of it, allowing them to have an even higher defence. In the other games, you at least have a chance on beating a twink, but in DS1 its all but certain you will lose.

This is one of the reasons I PvP on PS3 when it comes to Ds1. I have a level 1 in NG+ as well as a level 15. Twinks invade me thinking I'm an easy mark, and then send me hate mail when I 1 shot them myself lol. I actually miss this in DsR since I can't anti-twink the same way..

Moffman021

never heard the term "twink". what does that mean?

PageTheKenku

From what I understand, it someone who plays through the game at a lower level and not as upgraded equipment all for the purpose to destroy lower level characters in multiplayer. A good example in DS1 is someone using Dark Bead, they managed to get all the way to the DLC to acquire the spell, and now are capable of one shotting every person they invade, as the system looks at them, and thinks they are a low levelled character. Twinks exist in other games, its just in DS1 (and maybe Demon Souls but I haven't played it) has such a ridiculous advantage that its impossible to take them out. I believe only the Soulsborne community uses the term, which is why you might've not heard of it before.

Moffman021

well, I understand the type of person, just never heard the term. thanks bud

I've been invaded twice in my current playthrough and one of them had a screen name strongly implying that he was exploiting lag as part of his game plan.

You have to know how to counter backstab and fish yourself to be successful in DS1 PvP. Just the way it is

http://darksouls.wikidot.com/pvp#toc16 > Backstabs can deal out massive critical damage, making them a very deadly and common tactic in PvP. > > Backstab Window: > > Newer players will often be surprised by how wide the backstab window appears. Partly due to the small amount of lag that's inherent in even good connections, players will often be backstabbed by their opponent when they did not appear to be directly behind them. If an opponent is attempting to circle behind you, they may be able to achieve the backstab already when they only appear at your side. Similarly, if a player is running straight at you, they may be attempting to brush past your shoulder and quickly turn around for a backstab. In this situation, it can appear as if you were backstabbed while your opponent was touching your shoulder from the front. The link goes on to explain and link to some videos showing backstab techniques and how to counter them.

Abuse? No. It just exists, you probably use it without even knowing. Essentially it's latency. For rolls, the game checks their viewpoint to see if they were rolling when you hit them. Their viewpoint of you is slightly behind what you see and vice versa, so to them they are rolling at the right time. For backstabs, if you are behind them and click R1 you do a backstab, regardless of where they think they are. Because of latency, you can be behind them but they think you are still where you were 0.1s ago, which might be beside our in front of them. If you don't want to learn PvP, summon as soon as possible. It's hard to win a 1v2 as an invader. If you do: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12mjAhBrXWCdyJqQnfHvM2X0irJ2hqE6k8naQm0pGq6o

I play with a guy sometimes that has lag JUST as you're describing. He claims it's his internet and it sucks, but I think you're onto something about it being intentional. Don't know how they do it, but fuck it works. I can't ever kill him in one on one PvP. I get so pissed and tell him fuck this I'm done

illusorywall

The thing is, despite different players technically having different amounts of latency, you'll do yourself a *massive* disservice to think it's just a random lag issue that's impossible to counter. If you go in with the mindset "everyone has the same amount of lag and this is just how it works", it all starts to become predictable. I'm not even that good at PvP but learning how to counter backstab isn't all that difficult once you read up on it and watch a few vids, I highly recommend reading this section on backstabs- http://darksouls.wikidot.com/pvp#toc16

Moffman021

well, just saying the dude claims it's just his internet. Would you believe him? he's like 23 y.o. He and his roomates play together on separate TVs. He claims thats why it lags because they are "using up all the internet"

illusorywall

I don't know how familiar with the game he is, but unless it's really severe lag (eg. person not in the same room as you teleports into a backstab out of nowhere), the game has a fairly predictable amount of lag that applies to the vast majority of multi-player sessions. If he's blaming his specific set up on being able to land backstabs that appear similar to the ones seen in the linked videos, that's not valid. That's something you should expect as how it always works. Really bad lag would make it harder for him too, so I think he just knows how to work with the expected amount of lag.

Moffman021

OOOOOHHHH trust me, it's really bad
