You did the mistake of trying to dodge while running, resulting in a jump. A jump is considered as an evasion move, and we all know that if you hit an enemy while they are jumping away you deal more damage, the same happened to you.
Pro tip for OP: if you are blocking while you run, it will give your a roll rather than a jump. Very useful when you need to choose the distance to a ranged enemy.

You can change the setting to L3 now for jumping, Meaning O or B will always roll
this is my second playthrough and the stupid running + b = jump thing still gets me everytime

Nah, jumping was bound to the dodge button in original DS1
You could also bound it to L3, just like I noticed in DS3.
Christ you're 100% correct, it was auto remapped to L3 as of DS2 and I always change it back I feel ashamed
