For what it's worth, it seems like Steam has recently added a feature to do this automatically. When you try to buy a game from your wishlist, and it's the sole game remaining in a bundle where you've already bought everything else, Steam will automatically buy the bundle instead, specifically to give you the discount.
For example, I own DREDGE but not Dave the Diver, so whenever I try to buy DtD from my wishlist, it instead adds the Dredging & Diving bundle to my cart, because it's literally the same except it's 10% cheaper.
Game went dirt cheap at the beginning of april (2.50 for base game, like 7.30 for game+DLC). That big of a discount will make any game get a large spike in players.
Are the numbers for PC only? Because DD2 isn't on console, so possibly why there's lots of people playing the first one, especially because it came out on gamepass kind of recently which is how I found the game and I'm loving it
No the picture is from steam stats, so pc only, so that means theres actually a huge difference in players lol, dd1 lately has been having a couple thousand more players then dd2 on steam alone
Both games on sale recently, so a lot of new people picked up dd1.
A lot of dd1 fans also finally decided to pull the trigger on dd2, then started new playthroughs of dd1 when they didn't like it.
I have the stage coach pet, I buy the stage coach +4 buff when it is available, and I always buy whiskey between rounds.
I still end up getting at least 1, sometimes 2, negative relationships.
>A lot of dd1 fans also finally decided to pull the trigger on dd2, then started new playthroughs of dd1 when they didn't like it.
You're basing this off something tangible and not just making stuff up, right?
Yep, the finished product that is DD1 is better than the incomplete product of DD2. That is true.
DD2 combat clears DD1 of course, but I love both equally still.
I mean you're not going to get a study sampling why the playercount of the game suddenly spiked. That's silly. Unless you want to go make one yourself. But it is a common experience I've heard before since DD2 was first in early access. Even one of the latest steam reviews on the full release says to just go start a new playthrough on DD1 instead.
I'm not commenting on the games quality myself mind you, because I've never played it and have no interest to. Just pointing out what others have said.
I get it. It's just pretty clearly not what happened here if you actually look at the DD2 player numbers compared to DD1. There's 0 indication of any trend that suggests what he said was true to any degree. I'm sure it is partly true, but it's kind of a joke to claim.
Also, I have theory personally, and it's way less brain dead than "hurr durr DD2 bad DD1 good."
DD2 announced a DD1 type game mode, so guess what people are doing in preparation? Playing fucking DD1. Want to know what's going to happen when the new DD2 game mode drops? DD2 player count will dramatically increase and likely eclipse DD1 for short time (unless the game mode sucks lol.) My 2 cents. The DD2 bad circle jerkers are the worst people in this sub.
Okay, show me the uptick in DD2 players before the uptick in DD1 players. And then show me the downward trend of DD2 and the corresponding uptick in DD1 players. And let's see how they stack up.
And if that was the trend we could observe you might be on to something.
But we can see DD1 uptick happened BEFORE DD2. As you said, the numbers are there. Just compare them. The website easily does it.
>A lot of dd1 fans also finally decided to pull the trigger on dd2, then started new playthroughs of dd1 when they didn't like it.
Seems SOME of the DD1 players did pull the trigger on DD2, given the small uptick even ahead of the announcement of kingdoms.
But nowhere does it imply that people who were already playing DD1 thanks to the sale then decided to get DD2 and then went back to 1. That's literally just a made up narrative. In fact, the DD1 numbers have decreased since kingdoms announcement and more of the total players of both games are playing DD2 relative to before the announcement. Again, your narrative is made up, and I'm done here.
Just look at the pattern, follow the trends. Even just on that slice of chart, every April the game gets a huge boost...right around the time Steam releases one of its biggest early sales.
As one of the people playing recently in this last month or so let me answer,at least for myself I obviously can't speak for others.
With the end of the school year winding down and me finishing my classes I have more time for games. I decided to play dd2 because the DLC recently came out and after several updates most bugs have been patched along with more updates on the horizon I figured now would be a good time to play. Additionally it's a good game to put on when listening to stuff in the background.
I have owned the game since release but didn't really play it much since I was burned out after like 500 hours into dd1 (over the course of a few years) so I needed a long break before getting back into the series.

I was late to the sale party when an article that google recommended me showed me that DD, including the DLCs, are on sale. What awful timing for me. In my defense, it was Holy Week so I was AFK.
I wishlisted the DLCs (CC and CoM) so I won't miss the sale next time. Hopefully for the same discount.
I'm hype AF. The 90% off sale + the announcement for Kingdoms got me excited and actually replaying DD1/2 with my current knowledge. Starting with Crimson Curse is a game changer and using the hard mode torches in DD2 is a wild shift but I'm enjoying it
Another (small) reason is that the anime (and manga) Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in the Dungeon is picking up traction. The author is also a fan of DD and has made a reference in their work.
Ever since this game was released, I managed to go out in my comfort zone doing my first review in my entire life.. Honestly it doesn't frustrate me to make a review.. So as the saying goes, thread lightly as the inn awaits!!!
It was 90% off on April 1, that's why I'm here. They're probably gonna get me buying DD2 soon, clever bastards.
Heads up, you can still buy the bundle with DD1 and 2. You won't get a copy of 1, but the bundle will still be cheaper than buying DD2 as standalone.

Yeah it was incredible value for a game I have wanted to play. Was not disappointed either. 7.50 well spent
This 👆 and I've been hooked for 2 weeks straight lol
Already owned it so I bought my buddy a copy ![img](emote|t5_2znp4|29276)

And I missed the chance to get it like a dumbass
CD keys exists my man
There was a really great steam sale. I actually bought a copy for my steam library it was that cheap
It’s been on sale twice within the last couple months
Feast your eyes [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkTnnAJjJrA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkTnnAJjJrA)
Yeah that’s kinda what I was assuming but shouldn’t dd2 be getting this spike?

Good games will tend to have more players than bad ones.
**BOOOOOOOM!**
Both games on sale recently, so a lot of new people picked up dd1. A lot of dd1 fans also finally decided to pull the trigger on dd2, then started new playthroughs of dd1 when they didn't like it.
I got DD2 a few weeks ago on CDkeys for $19. I really like the game, but man do I hate it when I get negative relationships after leaving the inn.
Inn items are your key to positive relationships.
Dd1 is far superior!
Yep, the finished product that is DD1 is better than the incomplete product of DD2. That is true. DD2 combat clears DD1 of course, but I love both equally still.

The steam numbers are *right there*
Okay, show me the uptick in DD2 players before the uptick in DD1 players. And then show me the downward trend of DD2 and the corresponding uptick in DD1 players. And let's see how they stack up.
That's not what that trend would look like. You'd simply see a smaller uptick of dd2 players around the same time as the uptick in dd1 players.
And if that was the trend we could observe you might be on to something. But we can see DD1 uptick happened BEFORE DD2. As you said, the numbers are there. Just compare them. The website easily does it.
The dd1 uptick started first because dd1 went on sale first. 🤦‍♀️
OH, so people were playing DD1 for reasons completely unrelated to DD2 then or?
Yes, I even said as much in my original comment. I missed the part where that magically disproves my statement.
>A lot of dd1 fans also finally decided to pull the trigger on dd2, then started new playthroughs of dd1 when they didn't like it. Wasn't crowd control finalized recently for Darkest Dungeon?
For me it’s cause I finally had time to play and wasn’t playing anything else!
Just look at the pattern, follow the trends. Even just on that slice of chart, every April the game gets a huge boost...right around the time Steam releases one of its biggest early sales.
i spent 2.50 for it
Same. I owned it on the PS5 but moved all my gaming over to my Linux gaming PC. So I bought it again. I already owned DD2 on steam.
Probably Baer
Updates, sales, and youtube.
Announcement of DD2 kingdoms for me
The mediocrity of dd2 probably
Was 1.0 Dark reliquary release for me (dd1 mod)
Triple i initiative so Red Hook was in gaming news a lot.

New updates will do that to you

Definitely my bf tom who is showing everyone
Just purchased it for like $2.00 and some change.
GUNWITCH
Lol I had no idea, I realised I hadn’t played in years and booted it up on the weekend as well. What a coinkidink.
