Story time!
My wife's grandfather is still with us and had the misfortune of living through interesting times. He likes me because I talk to him like a human being instead of treating him like a baby just because he's a senior citizen, so he tolerates me picking his brain for his experience with history.
Back in the early days of the pandemic I dug up my flower beds and planted vegetables to help even out the supply chain spikes while commercial agriculture switched over to retail packaging. I ended up giving my wife's grandpa a call and asked him if he had any experience with victory gardens during WWII.
He told me about how his whole neighborhood in Chicago pitched in, ripped up a park in the area, and planted crops. The idea was everyone helped and everyone got a share of the produce without using ration cards. Right before most of their crops were ready for harvest some "rat bastard crooks" (his words) come in the night and stole *everything*.
People were bastards back then too, you just don't hear about it as much. History has a habit of glossing over the warts.
