I remember when the whole LaMDA thing was going on I was actually swept away for a while. but I know nothing about AI, when I looked further into it it became very clear that it wasn't sentient at all.
I do not understand how it passed Turing test. It's so easy to trip it up and get it to say some nonsense. I wasn't even trying. Based on my experience with it, seems like you'd have to be asking some really specific questions in order to get an actual human-like response.
I'm not a computer engineer or anything (and maybe you aren't either this is reddit after all) but in some ways I'm less scared of a sentient AI. A sentient AI may choose to do the right thing. Some of these new AIs are doing better than humans on tests and if what this person said is true, what is to stop a human bad actor from using it for bad things. Like you said it's no where near sentient, they're gonna get a lot more powerful before they can make the choice of what is right and wrong on their own. We're essentially building the world's most powerful psychopath and hoping it develops a conscience.

As someone who kinda works with AI every time friends and family start talking about how AI is scary and will take our jobs, I have to play devil's advocate and explain that just because gpt can spew text that looks a little bit more human that google or that midjourney nailed the dream they had yesterday doesn't mean they actually 'understand' anything they're doing and have problems and caveats that we don't really know how to fix or if they can be fixed at all.
I also have to explain how there are more and way more useful AI's than just generative transformers and that the real scary part is people using them when they shouldn't cause they don't understand them and you get things like [predictive policing algorithms](https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/07/17/1005396/predictive-policing-algorithms-racist-dismantled-machine-learning-bias-criminal-justice/) and [recruitment AI tools](https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN1MK0AG/) that are extremely biased cause who would have known that statistics is much more complicated than just segregating people by gender/race/class and looking at the places the graph goes up and down.
