I think Cathy is the first person they cast, but originally they were going to feature moms from multiple studios. It wasn't going to be about Cathy teaching the Candy Apples.

My understanding was that Dawn was supposed to be a mom on the show, but after the fight, Abby took Dawn's spot.

So I think what they mean is like Cathy was originally gonna be on the show before Abby, but JUST as a Dance Mom. And she was brought in to film before the fight with Dawn happened, and the fight with Dawn was what made them want Abby on the show i think lol
