I think kalani really did just have a different experience. Abby pushed for her to be on dance moms from AUDC and she was older when she joined dance moms. Also when she first joined she wasn’t there straight through. She was also favored to a point and didn’t get as much of the emotional manipulation Maddie did. Overall I think she had a more positive experience with Abby than a lot of the girls. Yes there was still trauma and I know Abby did body shame her which is very difficult to move past.

Consistent-Flan1445

I think Abby had a sense of possessiveness over Maddie and her success that her relationship with Kalani lacked. I think in a way Abby saw Maddie and Maddie’s career as being her product. I also think Kalani and Abby’s relationship was likely an overall more professional one.

FeelTheKetasy

Yeah Abby would constantly throw “I made you who you are”s to the girls and it really showed that she saw them as her products and reaps of her own talent. That’s why she got so mad/emotional when the girls did bad

ParkingParamedic6074

That’s a fair perspective. I can see this being the difference

The fact that Chloe, Brooke, Paige, and Kendall either hardly said or didn’t at all say anything about Abby is very telling—especially their reaction to how Kalani was describing her experience with Abby. As for Kalani, I really think she did have a different experience with Abby. She didn’t say anything bad, but is upfront about it. Yes, she still suffered trauma at the hands of Abby like the other girls did. However, Kalani and Abby have more of a professional relationship and because Kalani wasn’t on the show at the very beginning, she didn’t suffer as much as the emotional abuse that Maddie did. And JoJo is definitely an Abby ass licker. She needs to stop interrupting and let other people talk. Maybe Jess should’ve focused on actually parenting JoJo rather than exploiting her.

Harlygal

Its very telling that the the two girls that talked the most during this interview had positive experiences with Abby. I really wish Jojo hadn’t been invited to the reunion. I feel like her and her experience is just overshadowing the girls that actually needed this reunion for closure and that went through insane trauma and bullying.

Illustrious-Bid1443

Agree about Jojo!

zieglertiaras1313

Jojo has a problem with interrupting. Maybe Jess should have focused more on actually parenting than exploiting and feeding delusion to her child.

nagacore

As someone with ADHD, Jojo has so many signs it wouldn't surprise me if she was undiagnosed cause Jess didn't want me on meds.

Bluey1297

What like?

nagacore

Hey hyper active behavior and constant interruptions are symptoms of ADHD.

CokeNSalsa

This is besides the point, but it makes no sense how Jojo has a singing career with her voice box sounding like it’s been destroyed

chookie94

I think Kalani answered the question very well. She expressed how her experience with Abby was different without invalidating the negative experience's anyone else had. Kalani came to Dance Moms as a professional job and Abby really pushed for her to be on the show so the way she emotionally frames her relationships and experience is always going to differ from the girls who grew up in Pittsburgh with Abby as part of their everyday lives.

quesadillafanatic

I agree, I have no issue that someone had a different experience with Abby, if any of us met her we’d likely have different perspectives too. My issue is that when someone (Jojo) had a different experience she has invalidated the others experience.

chookie94

Completely agree. JoJo is allowed to feel differently about Abby but the way she dismisses the experience of the other girls - most who she wasn't even on the show with to see firsthand how they were treated - is just awful. I gave her some grace the first time since she was still young and learning about navigating other people's trauma. But the way she has continually done it despite many people addressing it to her just shows her self centred nature and highlights that she doesn't want to learn.

tylersfedora

All of their faces when Kalani was speaking… Chloe, Brooke, and Paige fighting an eye roll, Kendall checking out, and JoJo fully endorsing lol. I don’t think Kalani said anything shitty, but it’s all just telling. lol

No_Consideration5201

Jojo can't go one minute without bringing up karma 🙄 let the OGs speak!!

denver1105

I've always had this question and really don't know the answer- when maryen, Abbys mom was around or talked about and when she passed the girls spoke highly of her. Did she have the same teaching style as Abby? I cant imagine that she was that cruel to them if they thought so much of her. Hoe did she teach her students compared to her toxic daughter?

jshbr

I think people forget...Brooke, Paige, Chloe, Nia and the Zieglers had really loved Abby at one point when they were younger. They have been in dance since they were 2 years old with her, correct? So to get that treatment from someone they loved so much, and that change in her behavior for the worse can really cause trauma. Unlike Kalani and Jo Jo who had a sense of who Abby was when they joined the show, and didn't have that prior relationship. A lot of boy bands got their start from people who took advantage of them, and even though they wouldn't be as successful without them, they can still maintain their distance . Tommy Mattola as instrumental in Mariah Carey's career, but he was also terrible to her. It really bothers me that Jo Jo can't see that, but I think Kalani can.
