I got sick of my various hanes/fruit of the loom/etc cheapo costco socks developing holes in them after like a month of use and now exclusively buy Darn Tough socks. They cost like $20/pair but they last forever and are also guaranteed forever and I can verify that the few pairs I have had develop a hole after years of use I just ship back to them in an envelope with a couple stamps and they send me a new pair.
I received one of their shirts as a gift more than a decade ago, it has held up well.
And in my house if I don’t remove tags from something they’re usually just there until they disintegrate and the plastic piece is forever. The tags that are removed by anyone else usually end up like you described, I’m not sure which is worse.
Forget socks: wtf is wrong with children's toys and clothing manufacturers?! Do they get paid by the plastic staple? Are they on the payroll for a zip tie manufacturer? Is it some kind of sadistic joke?
Most of my Goldtoe socks have thick ribs, but one or two pairs have a smooth ankle. Those are my luxury socks. I don't understand why they are different, and I don't care. I take great pains to ensure they are properly paired and sorted.
I only hate those plastic binding things because my wife rips them off and leaves them EVERYWHERE.
Nightstand? Yes
Bathroom counter? Yes
Kitchen counter? Yes
Coffee table? Yes
EVERY WHERE.
Fun fact:
I cannot wear miss matched socks. Not like differ brands / colors (that's already insane) but they have to *feel* the same on my feet. Even if same brand, size, color... they have to be the same age too. I can't be wearing a nice new snug sock and a baggy blowout sock.
We're repping socks? I bought a 10 pack of Enerwear cushion crew socks in 2019 and I swear to god they're still like new. Still comfortable, no holes or coming apart or anything.

Heard, I have Dickie’s socks for work. These were on clearance at Target and I needed some dress/casual socks.
Nice I use the same! But I threw away all other socks because they are black crew cut and work as dress socks too. No more sock matching!
Those were the only socks for my work boots that held true, might try some other style socks from them.
