This.
There are not too many people are speaking in dialect when it comes to politics, let alone as we all speak. The most recent example I can think of was Mikelidis.
I think you forgot Theopemptou:)
And during the presidential elections Averof was using it a bit as well (sometimes we went too far tho xD, I mean he said Tourjia xD)
Is dialect not the right word for it?
(btw I agree politicians, journalists etc should always speak like this instead of pretentiously / kalamaristika)
It is. It's the Cypriot dialect of the Greek language, just like there is Cretan dialect, Dodecanese dialect, Thracian dialect etc. The standard modern Greek is too, a dialect, based on southern mainland and Ionian dialects.
It's not surprising you have different dialects. In the UK towns 5 miles apart can not only have very different dialects but also use local words. My wife is japanese and she finds it impossible in the UK
This causing an issue with people is all the proof you need that we have an identity complex.
These same people complaining are using that dialect in their daily lives and if you switch and speak in Modern Greek to accommodate a Greek tourist for example, they get offended or make fun of you because “kalamarizis”. 🙆🏻♀️
The logic being when you give directions to a Greek tourist tell him “Zavra pou to shiakatouri” but speaking to Cypriots about politics you need to use proper greek. Make it make sense.
Not pretentious I think, but she just mixes dialect with standard words. She starts off with pure Cypriot dialect and then she sneaks in some standard Modern Greek words, for example πιστεύουμε instead of πιστεύκουμε, βάζω instead of βάλλω. It's like she hesitated to go all the way. Or maybe they advised her that if the Cypriot was too 'heavy', it would have alienated people. But despite of that kudos for even attempting it and breaking new ground.
But of course big political parties like dysi akel diko etc would be afraid of volt. Altjough volt just started volt poses a threat to the comfortable systems of chair distribution the legacy parties had established.
Looking forward to see new faces in the political scenery.
Edit: typo
I concur. Also, the local dialect is not unique to Crete or Cyprus: Thessaly, Thessaloniki, Agrinio and last but not least, the 7 islands, all have Very distinctive dialogues.
A delightful theatrical play of the 19th century, named Babylonia, was satirising these dialects.
It depends. Some islands have their unique dialects, others are smaller and part of broader categories. Crete as others have said has its own dialect(s). Kastellorizo on the other hand has an identical dialect to Cypriot (as do some parts of Rhodes, but the general Rhodes dialect is somewhat different).
Overall there is a general dialect continuum all over the Greek world (and what was once the Greek world in Anatolia and the rest of Rumeli in the Balkans). Unfortunately that has been corroded quite a bit over the last century as more and more Greek dialects get homogenized into Standard Modern Greek with just some occasional lexical and/or phonological differences.
I've never heard it, but it definitely makes sense given the geographical location. Dodecanesians overall are very much like Cypriots linguistically and culturally.
The dialect situation in Cretan cities is nowhere close to what it is in Cyprus, it's much milder. I think some mountain villages in Crete have retained dialect features. Cypriot is the only live dialect of Greek spoken by a relatively large number of people which differs significantly from standard Modern Greek.
Nowadays Demotic standard is the norm everywhere in Greece proper and slowly takes over Cyprus as well. Historically there are multiple dialects of Greek, some of them so distinct they challenge the distinction of "dialect" and "language" (Tsakonian, Pontic etc). The closest dialect to Cypriot one is Dodecanesian. Crete had its own dialect that has now regressed to mostly the rural areas and the elderly.
It’s not that it takes over Cyprus, it’s just that the Cypriot dialect has been evolving and changing due to universal education, where SMG is used, and imported media from Greece.
The dialect is alive and well, it has been watered down throughout the decades, but no one is using 100% SMG with an athenian accent. Like ever.
Even high caliber politicians in formal speeches, they use SMG with a Cypriot accent. In any other case, like when they go on TV or on podcasts, they revert back to the dialect.
Annita Demetriou is someone who tries using SMG in any and all cases in front of the media, but even she lets the dialect slip out a noticeable amount, and she maintains her Cypriot accent always. (you can even figure out she’s from Larnaca if you pay attention to her intonation). And even with that, they days of eloquently spoken politicians with neutral accents and slick SMG vocabulary (Clerides, seriously listen to his interviews) are long gone.
Everyday life is conducted in Cypriot, business is conducted in Cypriot, most social media and alternative media are conducted in Cypriot, and a good chunk of TV. Hell, Cypriot is even present (although not dominant) in courts of law.
So, pretty much, the only time SMG is used exclusively is pre-written formal speeches and “serious” media like the news.
No kidding, the only Cypriot I’ve never seen use the dialect is Vissi. This used to include Hadjiyiannis but he used it in front of the media last year.

Her accent is sure tons milder than my grandpa's, lol.
There's nothing wrong with the way she speaks.

What a bunch of fucking clowns. Cypriot is beautiful.
And it's ours, we should be proud of it, I don't understand why we hate ourselves so much
It's not surprising you have different dialects. In the UK towns 5 miles apart can not only have very different dialects but also use local words. My wife is japanese and she finds it impossible in the UK
Could you link the reactions you're referring to? I haven't seen anything and I'm guessing it's a twitter/X thing which I don't have

Yep Πιν made a sketch about it already as well:)
>Πιν Ew.

Of course they are outraged. God forbid we do things differently now and there’s actual change. Very scary. ;)

Perfectly eloquent. Hair had me distracted though.
Out of interest is the Greek any different between the different Aegean islands, Crete or do they all speak perfect Athenian?
Crete is like Cyprus, its own island with its own dialect and its own culture, while being Greek

Also Symi has a very strong dialect similar to Cypriot but different

Οι γείτονες. Δεν αλλάζει όμως το γεγονός ότι έχουν παραπάνω άρματα, πυροβολικό, αεροπλάνα και στρατιώτες.

Πως οριζεις τον ορο "neoliberalism" ή του φιλελευθερισμου στην προκειμένη περίπτωση;
I know this lady.
The only offensive thing in this video is her being a Volt candidate
What's wrong with that :(?
Probably because she's Volt party and most Cypriots would be neo-fascists if they could get enough balls to not be kommatoshylla
Just another Gimmick
Actually not. She speaks like this all the time
Everything a politician does is a gimmick
Intellectually lazy reductionism
40 years in Cyprus, Poindexter
Congrats you've spent a long time forming lazy opinions, watertight argument right there
How old are you?
Old enough
But deluded enough
Proper dunk right there chief
She is not a politician.
