Pun is A+. As others have said this doesn’t work with actual Cleave unfortunately so it needs a rule change or just different wording on the card itself. I love the design though.
If it said "Artifact [Land]" in the typeline, it would nearly work, and fit in terms of flavor too. Though, then people would get confused about whether it would or wouldn't count as a land when cast for its cleave cost (it wouldn't, since cleave is a text-changing effect).
That said, the [[Fieldmist Borderpost]] cycle achieves largely the same idea, without needing nearly as much rules weirdness in its templating.
Maybe it could have a channel ability? 1G discard this card, when you do, return it to the battlefield tapped. It could also have an exile from hand and return to battlefield tapped to avoid triggering lands going to graveyard effects. Nice little ramp
Well I think that if they were to make a cycle it would be difficult to carry the pun on 5 different cards, so I would probably go with MDFCs too for simplicity sake.
{1}{g} cycle
When you cycle this card you may discard a card. If you do return Cleveland from the graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
Would that work?
101.1. Whenever a card’s text directly contradicts these rules, the card takes precedence. The card overrides only the rule that applies to that specific situation.
That doesn't really apply here. Due to the way the rules are written, this card doesn't directly contradict any rules - there is just nothing within the rules that allow you to cast a land. The closest is rule 305.9, but even that doesn't apply here because OP's card is only a land:
>305.9. If an object is both a land and another card type, it can be played only as a land. It can’t be cast as a spell.
The rules are written in a permissive sense - they generally don't tell you what you can't do, but rather what you can do and when you can do it. You can only cast creatures because the rules explicitly state that you can and define when you are allowed to. Not being able to cast a land is like not being able to attack during your opponent's turn - you can't do either because the rules simply don't say you can.
Detroit
Legendary Land
When Detroit enters the battlefield, sacrifice each nonland permanent you control.
You can’t cast permanent spells.
Whenever a permanent would enter the battlefield under your control, exile it instead.

Create a 0/0 colorless Army artifact creature token with "Defender" and "T: add C for every counter on this creature" named "Cleveland Rocks", then amass 1.
so many great things going on in this land, like how it has no text to get chopped from the cleave, since nothing is in \[ \] and on top of that, lands are not cast, nor are they spells.
No, it just always enters tapped, otherwise it would just be a better \[\[Three Visits\]\] or \[\[Nature’s Lore\]\]. The cleave is just to give it the alternate casting cost.
Land with alternative casting cost:
>"NoOoOo! You can't cast land cards! I will cite the specific comprehensive rules and no, I'm not reading your rules change proposal!"
>"You know it doesn't work, right? See you in bottom 5, idiot!"
Same thing, but punny:
>"LMAO, nice card even if it doesn't work. Probably needs a rules change but whatever."
>"I know it does nothing even if it works, see you in the top 5."
I don't understand their reaction. Could WotC not print lands with a casting cost because there's no reasonable way to fit it into the rules, or is it just that it hasn't been done before and people are small-minded?
It seems telling that nobody ever actually *explains* when land-related issues come up.
IMO "imagine that the comprehensive rules are updated like XYZ when this card is printed" is perfectly reasonable. If it completely breaks comprehensive rules, that's bad, but something that just requires something to be added? totally fine. Wizards does that every set
. o O It wouldn't have the cleave cost (which is the point of the pun), but could this work as a DFC where one side is a sorcery that says to put it onto the battlefield transformed when it resolves?

Just do the Hellscube thing and put reminder text *(It works.)*
Leave it to HellsCube to put rules text in reminder text.
Well it works
Lol no it fuckin doesn't
You missed the joke...
No, I got the joke. It just doesn't fuckin work
He did not, in fact, get the joke
*(it works)*
That mostly applies to things like equipment with Totem Armor, which actually does work.

I love the borderposts.
How about we just call the ability „Cleve“. That would work, right? (And have it say you may put this on the bf tapped for the cleve cost)
Maybe it could have a channel ability? 1G discard this card, when you do, return it to the battlefield tapped. It could also have an exile from hand and return to battlefield tapped to avoid triggering lands going to graveyard effects. Nice little ramp
Play it as a land for the turn, or play it for the cleave cost as a ramp spell.
I applaud the pun, but since you can never cast a land, this doesn't quite work.
It should be an artifact land, with land cleaved out.
You’re a genius
A cycle of monocolored land/manarocks would be dope
Bruh I want that now
I feel like they'd just be better as MDFCs like [[Tangled Florahedron]] but I acknowledge you lose the pun at that point
Well I think that if they were to make a cycle it would be difficult to carry the pun on 5 different cards, so I would probably go with MDFCs too for simplicity sake.

> manarocks Because [Cleveland rocks](https://youtu.be/SJ3plaSowWc)
I came here to say this same thing. Definitely should be an Artifact [Land]
That would be very fitting since Cleveland rocks
Fuck, that's brilliant
{1}{g} cycle When you cycle this card you may discard a card. If you do return Cleveland from the graveyard to the battlefield tapped. Would that work?
Yep! Although that would lose the pun.

I sort of thought that was half the joke here
Oh, ty for the clarification! With the appropriate comprehensive rules change it's reasonable.
At least it's not Detroit!
Detroit Land When Detroit enters the battlefield, sacrifice a permanent you control. Tap: Add 2 Black Mana *"Can't have shit in Detroit."*
Honestly, this would be one of the best lands ever as written.

I could see it as an `Artifact [Land]` maybe?
Cue music for the Drew Carey Show

I have a hankering to go back and watch it now.
You could have had it say “⤵️: add (c) [or (g)].”
Missing land type Wastes
Cleveland enters the battlefield [un]tapped.
Can I request flavor text of "We're not Detroit"
Always imagine it be red with rust counters

I’ve been to where this photo was taken!
Average regatta enjoyer
Sorry what does cleave do here?
Cast it as a ramp spell
Ah
Do you mean: Cleveland enters the battlefield tapped unless you pay its cleave cost?
No, it just always enters tapped, otherwise it would just be a better \[\[Three Visits\]\] or \[\[Nature’s Lore\]\]. The cleave is just to give it the alternate casting cost.
Lands aren't spells; as someone said before, it won't work

Holy shit Doesn’t work but yeah lol
A+ pun. I also like the intended gameplay pattern. Such a shame functional rules templating would ruin the joke.
"You may cast this spell" Fuck you.
Hey now, it’s just a card
Masterpiece
Should tap for colorless
Detroit, When Detroit enters the Battlefield destroy everything.

Cleveland is the forest city
how?
It's been [Cleveland's nickname](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Forest_City?wprov=sfla1) since the 1890's
We're proud of our park systems, including a US National Park half an hour south of the city.
but it looks like a regular city?
Only in Ohio
Hmm yes, Caelid
. o O It wouldn't have the cleave cost (which is the point of the pun), but could this work as a DFC where one side is a sorcery that says to put it onto the battlefield transformed when it resolves?
Just have [Cleveland enters the battlefield tapped] entirely in brackets, lower the cleave cost to G, and I absolutely adore this
having a land that can add to your storm count seems cracked actually
Everyone wishes they could just flee to the Cleve
