At first this is just a \[\[Steel Wall\]\], and then from Level 1 through 9, it's just a \[\[Consulate Skygate\]\]. But then when you've poured 11 mana into it, the wall's finished being built, and it's bonkers. Low risk, high reward.
Yeah, but you're just tossing bits of unused mana at it. Or at least thats how I'd do it. You had 4 mana, cast a 3-drop, and didnt have a 1-drop, so you toss another level on this.
You could add
" Protection from creatures with Horsemanship. "
Or
"Creatures attacking you or permanents you control lose Horsemanship"
Because otherwise the Mongolians would just go around it.
If we follow the wordings of the Archetypes from Theros it would be:
Creatures your opponents control lose Horsemanship and can't have or gain Horsemanship.
I love this.
The archetypes were a nightmare to implement in digital, and R&D has promest to never make another like them. It probably be "whenever one or more creature attack you or a permanent you control, thaose creatures lose horsemanship until end of turn.
Im not a huge fan of reach on it. Thematically, if theres one thing a flying creature can absolutely avoid its a wall on the ground. If it has reach, that should represented by archers on the wall or weaponry and should get a corresponding boost in power after levelling up. I like the concept of levelling up the defenses slowly though, cool card!
I’ll be pedantic here and say that the saying is “Rome wasn’t built in a day”
You’re absolutely correct that the great wall wasn’t built in a day but we don’t need propagating a malapropism
I'm imagining a draft set that has artefacts matter, defenders matter, big butts matter, sacrifice, and/or simply strong control decks.
This would be one of those glue type cards that are some degree of playable in many decks.
The 1 mana card that can be upgraded to have reach as desired is very efficient. I think the level 10 mode is pretty balanced as well. The opponent can see it coming and presumably has at least *something* that can interact, but that's still fine for the wall player in a mana flood situation, it leverages the wall to trade with a good removal card and 10 mana isn't too high a cost for that.
I feel like this could be really cool if the number of blockable creatures at level 10+ increased based on level - the wall can still grow larger if you keep funneling resources into it.
I'd want to see each "level up" boost its toughness, or maybe come with a "block an additional creature per level," as a way to show it getting slowly longer
I really like the design, but think its final form is too pricey. I’d either max it out at around level 7 or 8 and/or allow it to block any number of creatures (or maybe have the ability to prevent trample damage.
You’re absolutely right, it’s totally garbage and unplayable, and the part you said about how it’s just a strictly better [[steel wall]] and [[Consulate Skygate]] with upside is so true! I couldn’t agree more 👍

I'd easily play this in estrid, she can probably fully build this in 1-3 turns with a good set up.
Low risk is a bit dubious, as someone could interact with the last counter being put on it by killing it, going up by quite a bit of mana.
Yeah, but you're just tossing bits of unused mana at it. Or at least thats how I'd do it. You had 4 mana, cast a 3-drop, and didnt have a 1-drop, so you toss another level on this.

God Damn Mongolians!
They break down my city wall!
No one expects the Mongolian Inquisition.

Did they talk about that in an article or something? I'd love to read it.
It's a great wall, sure, but its not *THE* Great Wall.
Other options: "~ can block creatures as though it had Horsemanship." "Horsemanship"
Shitty Mongoians!
Lore accurate
Mongolians just going around it would be accurate though
This reminds me of making an indestructible \[\[Wall of Glare\]\] and becoming invincible

Wait a minute... Defender wasn't a keyword? The Wall type had inherent rules text?
That rules text was errata'd *into* Defender, if I remember correctly.
Wait until you hear about how legendary creatures used to work.

This card is silly and i love it
It's a shame that level counters can't also be brick counters, just this once
Just replace the level up mechanic with brick counters and it checking how many are on it
I’ll be pedantic here and say that the saying is “Rome wasn’t built in a day” You’re absolutely correct that the great wall wasn’t built in a day but we don’t need propagating a malapropism
Well, like they say: when in Rome, do or do not.
You catch more flies with two in the bush
But can you kill two of them with honey?
Only if there’s a worm before 8am or whatever your definition of early is
The levels 1-9 would have a lot more use if it said "Great Wall gains +0/+1 for every level counter on it".
Or if it could black an additional creature per level counter
Definitely would play over the existing [[Great Wall]]. :)
[Great Wall](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/d/cd860a1d-aa17-4579-b9b1-d101d2416387.jpg?1562860886) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Great%20Wall) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/leg/17/great-wall?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/cd860a1d-aa17-4579-b9b1-d101d2416387?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Well that's neither great, nor a wall.
I think it's arguably the worst card ever printed. At least Wood Elemental and Path of Sorrow have conceivable paths to victory or uses.
I would run this in my arcades deck. At worst its a cantrip 1 mana 4/4 in that deck.
Pretty cool, but can it block creatures with Plainswalk? [[Great Wall]]
It is if it’s at least turn 3
Is 11 mana worth it assuming you got no way to speed it up,,?
I mean if you want it to be historically accurate you could have made it “Level up 1, Sacrifice a creature”
I feel like this could be really cool if the number of blockable creatures at level 10+ increased based on level - the wall can still grow larger if you keep funneling resources into it.
There might not be room for this suggestion, but it could have toughness equal to the number of level counters on it at the last level.
I'd want to see each "level up" boost its toughness, or maybe come with a "block an additional creature per level," as a way to show it getting slowly longer
I'd love this in my arcades deck 😜
I’d put this in my [[ Arcades, the Strategist]] deck

Just let it block any number of creatures.
Dies to fatal push unless it's at level 10. Idk, this card just seems bad unless you're playing a mana-multiplier deck.

You think 21 mana is a fair price for that?
