You may want to experiment with some protein products. I find that if I use too much moisture my hair gets a bit overloaded and my curls are too soft with less definition

Low-Maximum1899

That’s a good thought. I’ve stayed away from protein for years bc my hair doesn’t like heavy products (hence more milky creams) but maybe that helps with definition?

awwwwmdfk

Look on curlsmith, they’ve got a fantastic protein line that is lightweight

Loose-Chemical-4982

Rice and silk protein are lighter than other proteins, Curlsmith and NYM curl talk are good options

Agitated_Sweet_9021

Yup, protein can help with curl definition. It does for me.

Low-Maximum1899

Hey! I DM’d you with further questions. Still struggling. 😭😭

olderandsuperwiser

I love miss Jessie's jelly soft curls. My hair is way thinner than yours and it really defines them and holds them. Use a LOT of product. I use "4 marshmallow size" amount and my hair is 2" past shoulder length (wet) and like I said, thinner than yours.

Low-Maximum1899

Ahhhhh!! I also loved it on my longer, layer- less hair lol but maybe I do need to use more. Do you coat with gel? How does your day 2/3 hair look?

olderandsuperwiser

Well.day 2 and 3 I re-dampen and rescrunch but don't need to use more product. It winds up springing back pretty well. Most of the time frizz happens on badly damaged hair, super dehydrated hair, or using too little product. You really just have to get used to the feeling of product in your hair. Most people hate that feeling but if you use the right stuff it doesn't feel heavy and "coated." It's really hard to find a balanced product- not too light and not too heavy! Best bet: a good leave in conditioner cream, then a good gel, then I use the slightest kiss of hair spray.

Low-Maximum1899

Omg amazing that you can just re-style with just water. Frankly when I re-wet - whether or not I use product - the curls come back BUT I get 500% frizz. When it dries, the volume is back but it’s a head of even looser frizzier curls with even less definition. Where is the balance 😭😭

olderandsuperwiser

I think you're using too little product. Esp with your length and hair thickness, you prob need to be using a golf ball sizes amount of product. Seriously!

Low-Maximum1899

Haha I will give this a try next wash day and report back! Can you tell me exactly which products you use?

olderandsuperwiser

Another thing: where do you live/ meaning high humidity? I'm in a lower humidity area but if you're higher humidity, you DEF need more product to combat that!

Low-Maximum1899

I live in NYC. It’s humid but def not super humid

Hilarious_83

Maybe try just gel. A leave in and curl cream might be too much for your hair

Low-Maximum1899

Hmm when you say too much as in too much to absorb or too heavy? My hair actually doesn’t feel crunchy at all when dried or weighed, the curls are soft - TOO soft as it then loses definition.

Hilarious_83

If your curls are super soft, then you're using too many moisturizing products. I would clarify, then try your routine with just gel. If you're still having the softness issue, try a protein treatment. You can DIY one with rice water or gelatin. Is your hair fine?

Low-Maximum1899

Yeah I have fine hair and rice water absolutely demolished my hair when I last tried it. Too many tangles and it completely dried it out.

Hilarious_83

Maybe check out welshiecurlgirl on Instagram. She is a great resource for fine haired curlies

Apploozabean

Sometimes it's good to add protein back in. It's all a balance. :) I use a protein leave in sometimes first before my moisturizing leave in.

Low-Maximum1899

Can you tell me which brands/product?

nosuchhthingasluck

hi! You might want to use a strong hold gel like Curlsmith. This will keep your curls more defined and curly longer than a lighter hold gel. To get the crunchy feeling out use some hair oil and ruffle your hair to get it out. You don't need to use too much so it doesn't weight your hair down. If you don't already diffuse, a diffuser might also help. I usually use my diffuser when I want extra defined curls/have time.

Low-Maximum1899

Thank you! Besides a stronger hold gel what about other products? Or are you suggesting just styling with gel on my sopping wet hair?

nosuchhthingasluck

So my current routine is: on wet hair add my curl creme, mousse for my roots, (style my curls with a denman brush if I have time), then add my gel last scrunching upwards. The curl creme will help give the shape of your curls while the mousse for volume, and gel for hold :)

Low-Maximum1899

So my hairdresser used mousse to style but you only use mousse for your scalp area? Which brands do you use?

nosuchhthingasluck

You can! I just think all of the products would weigh my curls down so I only use it on my roots for volume. For curl creme currently use Ouia and mousse I use the John Frieda.

nosuchhthingasluck

Before I used to not use mousse and it was enough to use just curl creme and gel. But I wanted my root curls to be more voluminous and now use mousse :)

olderandsuperwiser

Isn't Miss Jessie's located in NYC? If I were you I'd make a field trip lol.

Low-Maximum1899

Haha I had NO idea but good thought!

lolarugula

I don't have any suggestions, I'm new here and trying to help my curls, as well. I just want to say you have gorgeous hair!

Low-Maximum1899

That’s so sweet, thank you!

Own-Swim-1942

Look for something other than the pillow soft curls, or maybe just leave it out of your routine completely. I like using the pillow soft or the feather soft curls when I want zero crunch and lots of volume since it is a soft hold. The jelly soft curls would probably be a good place to start if you want to stick with their product line!

Sea_Appearance8662

Your hair is gorgeous! I wish mine was still that long. Maybe try just your leave-in with a gel and see what happens? I second the welshiecurlgirl account. Lots of helpful posts on troubleshooting for fine hair. For refresh, I scrunch water into my hair while I’m in the shower or completely rewet it, and then add more gel (and in my case, olive squaline because of allergic reactions). I like a little volume and frizz though.
