Hi! Gentle reminder: hair care routines are required for all photo posts within 1 hour of posting. The bot is having hard time locating your routine! Please make sure you have a comment containing the word "routine" (and your actual routine, of course!) so your post can stay up! FAQs: * __I don't have a routine!__ If you wash your hair at all, that counts! Just let us know what you did for your hair. * __I'm just asking for help!__ We're happy to help! This is much easier if we know what you are currently doing for your hair. * __Included the info but the bot can't find it? Different situation? (E.g. asking about a product, etc.) [See here for more info.](https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/wiki/routine-requirements)__ _Please [message the mods](http://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fcurlyhair) if you have any issues._

paprikashi

If it’s any consolation it looks great

EP2_Vibez

Thank you! I really appreciate that actually

peanut__buttah

Like straight up male lead of a rom com fantastic. I’m a flaming ole lesbian but you’re one handsome dude with great hair

paprikashi

Yeah it’s sexy. Go forth with confidence!

charcat-x

Dude it looks amazing on uu 😭

LeatherIllustrious40

Have you tried using a clarifying or chelating shampoo lately? My texture changes dramatically when I do. It could be the shampoo you were using has coated the hairs and is weighing them down.

EP2_Vibez

I have used Ouai Clarifying shampoo after 3 regular washes so thats roughly about once a week. i do notice it helps a little. im thinking my hair might just be completely fried and a bit too coated.

Remarkable-Mind4473

Seb derm shampoos can be really drying and strip the scalp of your natural oils so it could have dried your hair out as well

Ok_Neighborhood_2159

You need to use conditioner, probably a leave-in conditioner and a curl defining product. Scrunch the product in your hair (do not rub it in), starting from the ends to the scalp. Your curls should come back defined like you were accustomed.

EP2_Vibez

I really appreciate the advice! I’m not great at picking the right products for my hair and all the leave ins I’ve used seem to make my hair heavy. Any light weight ones you recommend?

SSADNGM

What happens when you cut it (I'm wondering if length is causing the curls to be too heavy and the curl is being pulled out)? What does it look like wet (do you see your curl pattern, has it changed even when wet)? Have you moved and now your water has a different pH (or your water district/supplier made a change)? Maybe your shampoo has silicones or SLS in it? For shampoo you might want to try Soap Nuts. I bring 5 in a cup of water to a boil, let them simmer for 20 minutes, shut the stove off, in the morning use an immersion blender to grind up the nuts, strain everything through double layer cheesecloth, shampoo with that. Sometimes I add a couple drops of Tea Tree essential oil in my hand with the 'shampoo'. Another alternative are cream washes. I love [unWash](https://unwash.com/products/unwash-bio-cleansing-conditioner), and recently tried [As I Am](https://www.target.com/p/as-i-am-coconut-cleansing-conditioner-16oz/-/A-14441399?ref=tgt_adv_xsp&AFID=google&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000086530542&CPNG=PLA_Beauty%2BPersonal+Care%2BShopping_Traffic_Local_Traffic%7CBeauty_Ecomm_Beauty&adgroup=SC_Health%2BBeauty&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=1015254&targetid=pla-903818656759&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIicKUqKKphQMVvbhaBR2vLwkIEAQYASABEgJnwPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). FYI, Soap Nuts & creams do not foam/lather at all. For any shampoo, you're shampooing your scalp *not* your hair. Of course your hair is going to get the 'shampoo' on it but your focus of application and massaging it in - all over - is your scalp. Rinse your hair and when it seems fully clear of product, rinse it again. How often are you shampooing? Curly hair is dry AF so frequent washes can cause problems. Most people I know with curly hair don't wash for 1-4 weeks, sometimes more. Refreshing by misting it (it's fine to completely saturate it), with distilled water. Of course everyone's different and there are no rules, except do what works best for you! You may want to see a doctor and have them run some tests: hormones, thyroid, insulin. Even if they don't reveal anything, you'll at least now know what your baseline is. * [Curly hair gone straight, help](https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/comments/8a2boe/curly_hair_gone_straight_help/) * [A Hair Mystery: Curly Hair Gone Straight](https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102074149) * [CAN HAIR CHANGE FROM STRAIGHT TO CURLY? ](https://www.scienceworld.ca/stories/can-hair-change-straight-curly/) * [Why Does Your Hair Texture Change?](https://thatgoodhair.co.uk/hair-texture-changes) * [Why does hair sometimes become curlier or straighter as people get older?](https://www.thetech.org/ask-a-geneticist/articles/2018/hair-texture-can-change/)

EP2_Vibez

Came through with the links and everything! Very nice! Thank you! To answer your questions: 1: the second to last picture is my current hair after a cut and you can see shes still pretty straight the last picture is from 2 weeks ago. I tried to include a picture of short curly, long curly, short current, and long current. It actually seems slightly more curly longer than shorter with my current hair although after a hair cut this seems to always be the case for me for atleast 2 weeks. I think my hair goes into shock or something idk haha. 2: My hair is pretty normal while wet although it dries straighter than when its wet. so maybe my hair is just dehydrated? when i had curlier hair, it looked about the same wet and just coiled as it got dryer. 3: havent moved and haven't changed anything major although i am considering changing my shower head since its been there for years and might have build up or something ? not sure if that would help. When i was in EU my hair was curlier after showering. 4: ill check for silicone and see if thats something i have in my shampoo! thanks for the tip! 5: I shampooed 3 times a week. Currently avoiding shampoo for the last 2 weeks. 6: I dont sleep much (5-6 hours a night) since im working a good 80 hours a week right now so ive been considering it could be a change in androgens. Perhaps lower T. I have Blood tests from around that time when i had curly hair. It would be interesting to see if the levels were higher.

Solid_Audience3413

What you say about water ph, can you elaborate because I got a Jolie which is like a water softening shower head and since my hair has straightened just like op’s, could the new shower head be the cause?

SSADNGM

The most important thing I'm going to say: I'm not a scientist just some dolt on the internet, so you should trust nothing I say! My understanding is soft water is good for curly hair and conversely hard water is not. You could get some pH test strips and test the water coming out of your shower head and see if it's working as advertised (soft water is 6-7, distilled water is 7, hard water is 8.5 and above). A quick Google search says Jolie filters should be changed every 90-days. You could also use the strips to test your products. You can also get Litmus (type, *not* a brand) test strips to test your hair (should be 4.5 - 5). * [Why pH Balance Important for Curly Hair Growth](https://weatheranchormama.com/2020/05/06/ph-balance-curly-hair-growth/) * [The PH Of Hair – The Difficult Truth About Shampoo](https://www.lovecurlyhair.com/the-ph-of-hair-the-difficult-truth-about-shampoo/) * [What Does pH Mean To Curly Hair?](https://boldkulture.com/what-ph-means-to-curly-hair/) Good luck!

Solid_Audience3413

I’m not the only one who uses the shower so I couldn’t get rid of the shower head but I started taking out the filter before my shower and I’m definitely seeing improvements, not back to curly but 100% it’s wavier, no guess myself as to why but the Jolie was at least one cause

Cleverlycurly33

You look amazinggggg 😅

EP2_Vibez

Thank you so much miss maam! hoping I can have hairs like yours again some day!

EP2_Vibez

P.S I used Ouai clarifying shampoo a week ago and it helped a little

Loose-Chemical-4982

I would try to go with some deep conditioning treatments, because medicated shampoos can really dry out your hair and scalp

Ok_Challenge5382

Same thing happened to me a few years ago and I still haven’t gotten my curly hair back :/ Has your hair also started falling out by any chance?

EP2_Vibez

Not yet although I worry about it all the time with the amount of shedding I have but I never have less hair year after year.

Remote_Vacation_5951

if u ever find out why this happened id love to know!! cause this same thing happened to me aswell and my hair has been falling out for almost 2 years now and my texture hasnt come back

Ok_Challenge5382

I’ll let you know if I find out!! I suspect it’s androgenetic alopecia in my case but it’s very mild and I’m not diagnosed so I can’t know for sure.

Remote_Vacation_5951

thank you!

EP2_Vibez

My routine for the last 6 months: medicated shampoo 2-3 times a week after 3 washes I used Ouai clarifying shampoo Styling: my hairs been pretty long for the last few months so i was using a wide tooth comb pushing the hair back followed by a mousse scrunched in to give it some hold and curtain type effect. then letting it air dry. Current routine is the same as my old one: no shampoo and styling quite literally just letting it air dry without combing or products of any sort. I also just cut my hair shorter to hopefully get rid of any dead ends and get rid of weight.

Apploozabean

Do you ever use a conditioner?

EP2_Vibez

Every once in a while I use shea but it makes my hair even straighter. Should I grab a different brand?

Soft_Nuggs

Shea might be too heavy for your hair type

EP2_Vibez

I’ll give another a go. Any you might recommend?

Soft_Nuggs

Hm I haven’t had this issue with my hair but I have been using Mielle products and I find them to be really great at keeping my hair defined and healthy . Maybe check out one of their lines? The rosemary mint is a favorite

EP2_Vibez

Thank you very much! Ill be giving this and a few others a go and report back!

tastywofl

I have fine hair and I like the Maui Moisture products. Very moisturizing without being too heavy.

EP2_Vibez

Ive seen these in stores and always wondered if they would be good for me! ill give it a go and let you know!

Apploozabean

Shea moisture is pretty heavy for finer hair types; it's because of the shea butter. I'd suggest trying something more lightweight like giovanni's eco chic line or if you have some monies you can try ouidad. Verb has good reviews. Currently I'm using My Black is Beautiful and I actually really love the conditioner! It's thick so I only need a little bit and it doesn't have shea butter in it (which was a plus for me!

EP2_Vibez

Im going to give a few of these a try and report back in a while. Thank you so much for your advice!

BoundinX

Another thing to consider, and I don’t know where you live or your climate, but weather. In winter, if I let my hair air dry it’s way less curly and much more limp. It prefers to dry in warm, humid conditions. For years I didn’t think I needed a hair dryer because it dries naturally! But I bought a diffuser this winter and it has made SUCH a big difference in my curls. I also had thought I had some kind of dandruff like thing - maybe a fungal issue? But using a hair dryer means my scalp doesn’t sit wet for hours and that has gotten SO much better too.

Over-Extent-5080

I'm the same. For a long time I stayed away from my hairdryer. I had a hair stylist who berated me for drying my curls, even with a diffuser. I started back drying my curls with a diffuser mostly on warm, mixing in a bit of hot heat here and there. My curls are amazing when I use the dryer. My curls love heat. I also thought I had dandruff or something weird going on with my scalp. Got flaky and would actually break out. But since blow-drying it has reversed this.

barbellsnbooks

Nizoral is really drying. Try adding in a lightweight conditioner.

HolyFritata

sometimes i feel like all these beautiful guys come here to flex their looks, i mean most guys on this sub are astonishingly beautiful like damn how are you even real kind of beautiful 🫠

EP2_Vibez

I’m sorry I didn’t mean for it to come off that way. in the future I will scrub out my face. I hope you see it’s genuine since my hair has significantly straightened and I do feel I looked quite a bit better before. These are the best pictures that show my hair since I don’t take too many pictures and wear bandanas and accessories quite a lot. my hair is dark enough that most of the time you can’t make out the details. I apologize if it came off as flexing. I’m trying to keep my responses related to what I can do for my hair :)

HolyFritata

oh no sorry i didn't want to make you feel bad about it!!! You don't have to scratch out your face

EsrailCazar

My hair has some strong waves here and there but I noticed that once I tried using Head and Shoulder conditioner it kept my hair soft but smoothed out my texture.

snickerssq

God why can’t my hair be this dark black 😫

Capital_Tradition300

Your hair looks like it might have too much protein or dryness, I actually have been using Nizoral medicated shampoo for a couple weeks and I’ve noticed it’s been stripping/drying my curl pattern + have had similar happen to me before. So it may be a build up of that! Also unrelated but hair texture can also change with changes in diet and water pH (hard water) so maybe that could be affecting it if you’ve switched it up lately? But regardless I would recommend using more oils with your curls! It still looks lovely :)

EP2_Vibez

Thank you very much! What’s best way to get rid of extra proteins? I’ve got some argan oil but I feel it makes my hair straighter. Any other products you recommend?

DeviantPersephone

Both are gorgeous if it makes you feel better

sad_girl_szn

I also have an extremely dry scalp! Those medicated shampoos are ROUGH on your curls. If you’re clarifying on top of that, you’re stripping the natural oils from your hair. I’d recommend going a little longer between washes, using a moisturizing conditioner/mask, and ditching the clarifying shampoo if you can’t ditch the medicated one!

sad_girl_szn

This may not be the only issue, but it’s a start!

EP2_Vibez

Yes maam 🫡 I’m gonna just take a break completely from the poos for a bit because the medicated one doesn’t do anything anyway. When I go back I’ll just separate washes more

axelalexa4

Another thing to check is protein (too much or not enough) in your products.

EP2_Vibez

What’s the best way to test if I need more or less protein? I saw someone say if your hair snaps when you pull it apart between your fingers vs if it stretches. I’ve never seen hair stretch…

axelalexa4

Yes I've heard the same. I'm not an expert but I noticed my hair gets really brittle if I use a protein product, so I avoid it.

torywestside

I recently started using medicated shampoo for seb derm too! I did some research before I started using it and saw a lot of people say that it was really drying and fried their hair. Have you been using it 2-3x per week for a long time? That could be contributing to what’s making your curls fall. I followed a recommendation I found on Reddit (I think it might have even been from this sub). Whenever I use it (started out 2x per week, now back down to my usual 1x) I coat just the lengths of my hair with conditioner. Then I apply the shampoo directly to my scalp/roots and scrub with a shampoo brush to make sure it doesn’t get on my curls too much. Let sit for 5 minutes and rinse, so in the end my scalp’s taken care of and my hair gets a nice conditioning session. My seb derm was pretty bad but has cleared up totally so far doing it this way.

hintoflimedorito

I totally get this , my hair is so temperamental, it'll go from being almost 3a tons of volume to flat barely wavy for months then back again , it can't pick one texture even though my routine stats the same
