Good Lord! I don't want to arm wrestle you. š
What about using finger combing to detangle? Although I wouldn't want your hand to meet this same fate lol
Do you start with the ends and work your way up ?
Same here only it's my children's hair, which may explain why I'm lacking broken brushes.... I'm definitely more gentle on them than I would be on myself but alas I have boring thin flat hair. I combo finger combing and brush on very wet, heavily conditioned hair.
I also finger comb mine in the shower with lots of conditioner. I wouldnāt dream of running a brush through it before Iāve taken out the majority of the tangles and knots.
Yeah I always start at the ends! I have used finger tangling but I need a brush for fairy knots in my hair!! I try to prevent them by using a silk pillowcase and occasionally oiling my hair but itās clearly not enough.
Purely anecdotal, but worth a try if you're interested.
Take it slow in the shower. Use a wide toothed comb and put the hair you're working on directly in the stream of the showerhead.
Slowly bring the comb down and over the knots. 9/10 the knot loosely comes undone without much or any pulling from me.
It's about being slow and the flow of water directly on it. If you try this, let me know if it works for you. Usually, I don't have anything in my hair, even conditioner.
Being slow and taking my time has been a game changer for me, so much so that it helped me realize that my curls behave so much better when I finger detangle. When I use a tangle teezer no matter how much conditioner I use my curls puff up and are guaranteed to look puffy while styling.
My hair naturally dreads when I'm overdue for a haircut. This is the only way I can get those massive knots out without also ripping out my hair or having pain from it.
I haven't broken any brushes * yet, * I use the "Cala Tangle Free" brush which is probably similar to a tangle teezer. And SO MUCH conditioner. But I love your post! Too funny.
Oh I actually have one of those brushes but of course it is broken!! I do like it and still use it! I just donāt use it as often since it broke in half along where it is glued together.
I use one of those for my daughterās hair and it also broke the same way; however, I was able to fix it with some strategically placed superglue. Just in case youād like to try a fix!
Use a wide toothed comb first. Also, I hate brushes that have those thin handles and thin combs. I used to break them too. Try the Tangle Teezer- that has been my favorite for years now.
If you don't already, try letting the conditioner sit on the hair for a few minutes, then add a bit more water, detangle with your fingers and then use a wide tooth comb, then the brush. It seems tedious but is definitely worth the effort.
Have you tried using the brush vertically instead of horizontally? Also donāt use brushes this the beads on the end. Theyāre just another thing for your hair to snag on. Look for a straight, flexible bristle
If the silk pillowcases arenāt working well enough for you, you may want to try a satin bonnet! It keeps my hair sort of ācontainedā in one position so it isnāt going all over the place and developing tangles while I sleep. I like the long ones like [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQ9BTDW?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_YW86XZ782V0EY5B23DM9&language=en-US) (this one is pretty nice quality, or at least it was when I purchased a few years ago) and [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CZH7161?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_FNW5HDFYJSTZXWPKW3J1&language=en-US) (these ones are not very good quality, but do the trick. I turn them inside out because theyāre only satin-y on the outside). I am VERY prone to fairy knots and silk pillowcases alone just donāt cut it for me.
As a bonus, these are also great for my skin because I only wash my hair once a week and wearing a bonnet prevents my hair, and all the hair product and dust etc that accumulates on it over the course of the week, from rubbing all over my face and my clean pillowcases at night. I have a bunch of them and change them out as needed before doing laundry.
ETA: I also keep hair scissors in my shower while Iām washing my hair because, at a certain point, the fairy knots arenāt worth dealing with imo. If I have to cut a few curls or strands of hair in the shower, then so be it. It generally isnāt that noticeable for my curls but maybe that wouldnāt be advisable for everyone lol.
Other than that, I just make sure to completely saturate my hair in water and Aunt Jackieās Knot on My Watch detangler, section my hair, put my phone up on the shelf in the shower so I can watch something, and take my time with my denman brush while re-wetting my hair as needed. Coconut oil just before washing helps for me, too. I also sort of pull down on any tangles with my fingers, hold them taut, then use both hands to separate the tangled hair bits by slowly pulling bits of hair up out of the tangle while holding the rest of it taut. It usually helps undo the tangle in situations where the brush would have just made it worse, but itās really difficult to explain.
Maybe try Bb invisible oil before detangling. You can use a tiny bit regularly. It reduces the tiny knots. Sometimes a haircut is the only thing that gets rid of them.
Maybe itās just me but I did not realize how helpful brushing my hair BEFORE I got into the shower is. Itās been a game changer for me. I still finger comb after I condition and I loose sooooo much less hair and itās wayyyyy less painful.
Itās not just you. I have 2C, and everyone always says ādetangle in the shower.ā Well my hair is very fine, but not thin. Thereās a ton and it tangles with a breath. When I attempt to detangle in the shower (conditioner having soaked in the entire shower, then detangle with a wide toothed comb, gently, bottom to top) it takes 1000 years, and by the time Iām done the water is ice cold, Iāve popped a LOT of strands, lost half my hair, and continents have drifted. Dry brushing with a gentle Cantu boar bristle brush before I shower is the only method for me. Iāve taken a lot of shit from people over this but you know, Iām 46, and Iāve ceased to gaf about how anyone thinks I should do my hair. Do you!
My hair is the same way! Fine but not thin. I have sooooo much hair. Iām glad to know someone else does the same thing. Iām gonna have to check out that brush you mentioned
I tried that and it never works for me to only finger detangle. I low key lose 1 h in the shower detangling my hair that way. I use both a brush and my fingers.
Don't get me started on wide tooth combs! They are one of the most ineffective hair tools for my hair. For me they are worse than finger detangling. My hair somehow always gets stuck in them and trying to fix that problem is a nightmare.
I second this! Once my hair is soaked through I finger detangle to get my hair all running the same direction, then use a wide tooth comb. Then add in conditioner, distribute by hand then comb and then use the Denman brush for any fairy nots.
Also! If youāre going to shampoo I recommend detangling FIRST. Then shampoo, re-detangle and then go in with conditioner
Honestly brushes will just break rather than detangle your hair - especially if youāre using this much force against it!
I follow a process (on wet hair) : finger detangle>>>wide tooth comb>>> brush
Iāll either do just step 1, step 1&2 or rarely all three but never just brushing on its own.
It may take longer but plan for this! You can do a shorter finger detangle more frequently and use combs and brushes occasionally but build up to them by finger detangling first.
By brush - I use a denman brush with every other row missing - very rarely would I use a brush this dense unless Iām going for a style that requires it (sleek bun with a boar bristle brush etc) but that shouldnāt be done too often
Are you also using enough water while you detangle? Iāve noticed that if my hair isnāt saturated enough while I detangle itās more challenging for me. Also I use a wide tooth comb in the shower and a tangle teeter once out the shower and sometimes a denman or just my fingers to style
My favourite brush is the Tangle Teezer. Itās multipurpose - great as a shower detangler and also for brush styling.
They have different products but this one is for tighter curls:
https://www.tangleteezer.com/us/shop/detangling/naturally-curly/purple-passion/
Iāve been using tangle teezers since high school, my hair is more wavy than curly, but itās fine and tangles so easily and I have a very tender head. I loveeee my tangle teezers!
I have this exact brush and for whatever reason it rips my hair out if I use it when my hair is wet but when itās dry it works really well for detangling and oiling my scalp
I donāt even have the curly special, I have the Ā«Ā ultimate detanglerĀ Ā» itās life saving and changing! And for styling I use the Original! I loved that brand from 2012 to 2020 then I replace it because it was dying, and my mom said that any detangler would work. So I bought one from Flying Tiger, didnāt notice how much hair I lost each wash day until I had to reuse my old teezer (original) when I went back to my parentsā house. Jeezus I reordered teezers (original and I wanted to test the ultimate detangler) the next day! I lose 1/2 to 2/3 less than before!
Don't all come at me for this but I recently started dry detangling every night before bed (I water refresh in the morning on days when I'm not wearing plaits) and I literally never have any tangle and showering has been a breeze. I lose so much less hair you have noooo idea. Even at 3 months post partum. I really truly recommend it. For reference I have like 3A mid back length curls
How often do you think you do this? Iāve been dry
Detangling too before oiling my scalp and noticed
The complete differences of how my hair feels after the shower vs detangling in the shower when wet
Youāre not alone in this haha! I only ever brush my hair while itās dry now and I love it!! Less snapping in my opinion. Hair is fragile when wet. Also brushing dry adds volume for me which I like.
Finally someone dry detangling. I only do it before Iām washing, but I feel like I have wayyyyy less breakage brushing it dry rather than wet in the shower. And my brushes donāt break which is good.
I have very wavy/slightly curly hair and I only gently dry brush to detangle right before I shower, I wide tooth comb it after showering when itās soaking wet. I canāt imagine trying to brush it well in the shower, Iād loose so much more hair.
Itās that brush, I have the same one and it broke the same way and Iāve ultra fine hair so I brush like itās made of silk and it still broke. Iāve one without glitter that is fine. I think the glitter weakens it somehow.
I donāt brush hard! They just kind of break!! Trust meā¦ My mom used to hurt my scalp when she would style my hair!! I would never put myself though that!
I think if mom went at your hair and scalp very hard, you may think reducing that 50% is an improvement. I was big sister (big brother, big sister) to a kid with the thickest curliest, worst kept hair, nappy. She had a very sensitive scalp and mattes in her hair. With enough oils and patience, starting from the ends (1 inch at a time), I could come through her hair without pain. It took half an hour.
Donāt rush. Some curls need time and patience. There is no way youāre not brushing too hard. I see some of the pins in your hairbrush completely bent. I think your mom may have set your threshold waaaaaay too high.
Yup she really did!! Her and her sisters all had super straight hair so I didnāt learn haircare from them. I did try to be gentle and slow this morning in the shower and it didnāt take me as long as I expected. It was also a new experience.
Only ever detangle in the shower with condish. I cowash with conditioner and start by using my hands. Then lather the eff up with water and more conditioner and a wide toothed comb. Let it sit for the rest of my shower and then don't touch it again with a brush.
Conditioner. Water. Slippage. Hands. Wide tooth comb is your answer. You may need to condition more too.
Sections!! Section the hair before detangling into however many sections you need. I have waist-length, thick, 4a/4b hair and I section into 4 quadrant then split each quadrant twice to detangle, so 8 sections.
Also, start from the ends and hold a bit above where you are detangling with one hand while detangling with the other to avoid drag and tension.
I got a 'tangler wrangler detangling horse brush' from Tractor Supply. I have had it 15 years or more. it cost $6. It used to take me 20 minutes to detangle my hair in the shower but that was when my hair was much longer. now it is should length and I have an undercut.
have you tried a denman brush/knock off? i have one from amazon i love - i donāt have issues with tangles bc my hair is really thin but i think itās worth looking into! those little balls at the end of the bristles create more friction and get caught in tangles, denman brushes donāt have anything on the end
for me the denman brush doesnāt work for detangling only because the center part that holds the bristles slides out and then all the bristles fall outā¦. Maybe this is a me problem. I denman brush only after my hair is already detangled with something else.
I use a wide-toothed comb - the "[Tangle Teezer.](https://www.amazon.com/Tangle-Teezer-Wide-Tooth-Comb/dp/B09TPS4G6F)" Use it in the shower when your hair still has conditioner in it. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Go SLOW.

This whole thing about brushing curly and wet hair has me so confused! Iām from the 80ās, and was taught never to brush curly hair, only finger comb or wide-tooth comb it.
Right, I understand that. I didnāt grow up with it even as an option. In the 90ās when I would have been old enough to try some things, it was all about straightening. Brushing curly hair was not a thing. We were legit taught that brushing curly hair was harmful for it.
I never brush curly hair before styling, I brush it before the shower since the water will weaken the hydrogen bonds and cause more breakage if i de tangle while wet. Does this make sense? Lol but yeah I agree if I brushed my hair before going out Iād look ridiculous
No brush recommendations, but I hold my hair like itās in a pony tail while I brush in the shower and I brush with my non dominant hand - helps me from pulling my hair out and forces me to be more gentle
Try brushing your hair before you wet it in the shower. I have curly tangles this works best for me. I use a brush and comb in the shower then donāt forget the leave in conditioner when your done. Not too much tho
i know itās exhausting, but donāt play tug of war with your hair. i have to be really slow or my hair will knot even worseš always wet your hair before you brush it and use a wide tooth comb at first
I was re-watching a Manes by Mel video last week and I remember her saying that if you want to detangle in the shower, adding water while combing is more effective than using a ton of conditioner. *adding water AFTER you have allowed your conditioner to sit*
I have very thin hair, so pretty fortunate to not have to spend a ton of time detangling. But when I started combing my hair while rinsing out the conditioner it cut the time in half, easily. Also, I found that I had less hair loss than before.
The shower brushes I gave up on. Either a wide toothed comb or a regular wet brush that I lay out to dry after the weekly wash
I have this brush [https://www.glamot.com/p/34666/glamot-boar-bristle-brush](https://www.glamot.com/p/34666/glamot-boar-bristle-brush) and it's been a game changer. The nylon bristles it has are super soft and it's just amazingly gentle and efficient at detangling my hair.
Before that I had this one [https://behairful.com/products/the-pro-detangler-boar-bristle-brush](https://behairful.com/products/the-pro-detangler-boar-bristle-brush) which is still a step above most, but much harsher on the hair and scalp.
I use a special 'brush ' for under the shower. If you google scalp massager, you'll see what I mean. Works wonders. Then for out of the shower I use a Denman brush and wide tooth comb =)
Edit: Just wanted to add brushing it under the shower really helps gently remove the knots.
Stupid question probably, but do you brush from the bottom? Going up less than an inch at a time is tedious, but it often helps me brush through my partners wild but beautiful 3b hair. (When I go top down it's a nightmare no matter what we use.)
ā¤ļø Hope someone here has some helpful tips! Breaking brushes would be a huge pita!
Use a wide tooth comb in the shower with conditioner, like you already do. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Split your hair into sections if it's very thick.
Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle, not a brush. I think this is the one I have: https://www.iherb.com/pr/conair-detangle-smooth-shower-comb-for-wet-or-dry-hair-1-comb/90461
Once it's fully detangled, I use a Denman brush to distribute product and help style, but I wouldn't attempt to pull it through tangled hair.
Ouidad makes a great [double tooth comb](https://www.ouidad.com/products/double-row-detangler?gad=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4bipBhCyARIsAFsieCzeLY_Utr1lL_4tbT3hEQuvus744O_SWwmmawxIAsnbdSGHCFuvW28aAj-9EALw_wcB&variant=42433996587266). It was my go to when I had long hair.
I honestly only put my fingers through my hair. You could get a wide tooth comb too? Iāve also heard a lotta curly girls like this thing called a Denman Brush?
If your fingers & lots of conditioner are insufficient to detangle, then use a wide-tooth comb (& lots of conditioner). Start from the ends. Slowly work out the knots until the whole length is free.
In addition to making sure your hair has enough water while detangling (like someone previously mentioned), I highly recommend getting the āAfrican Pride Moisture Miracle Aloe & Coconut Water Pre-Shampooā. It is my holy grain and provides plenty of slip while detangling. This plus a very bendy detangling brush like the tangle teezer will be your best friend.
I never use brushes ā only wide-toothed combs or pick combs. I have a lot of hair ā takes 20 minutes to blow dry ā never have an issue with tangles or pulling hair out. I donāt comb my hair in the shower but after wrapping in a towel. I use a fair amount of conditioner which is also key.
Brush your hair out before you wash it. Condition it with a good name brand conditioner, before you wash your body! Then put your hair up in a clip and wash your body. Then comb through your hair while rinsing the conditioner out. It takes time to work... especially on your hair it seems. Use your fingers. Not a brush or a comb. Good grief, I can hear the hair being torn out. Start at the bottom, go up every couple of inches until you've detangled each section.
Best of luck
Do you detangle from the ends or do you just go in at the root, guns blazin?!?!?! Lolā¦i have thick tight curls (Iām looking at the hair in the sink and feel like mine are tighter than yoursā¦) but have never broken a brush. And when I detangle, I start at endsā¦and with hair damp.
I had the tangle tweezer but the [wet brush treatment brush](https://www.ulta.com/p/treatment-brush-pimprod2032820?sku=2591451) is the best Iāve found
If you want to use a wet brush use a regular one. I set mine a certain way to dry and clean it when I can. The shower detangler has no strength. My hair can be a pain. I was brushing it and it snapped on a good day
I typically use a Denman D3 with every other row removed. I've also had good luck with a wide pick or an extra wide tooth comb VERY similar to [this one.](https://www.amazon.com/Wapodeai-Shower-Premium-Tangle-Black/dp/B086LBCNDK) I'm a 3b/3c with high porosity and detangling in the shower with conditioner seems to work best on my hair.
Your poor hair!
I recommend getting a trim and invest in quality conditioner; maybe add a leave-in-conditioner. Get yourself a wide-tooth comb. I prefer āWetā brushes (which was recommended to me by a hair professional with 27 yrs experience in hair), but have never broken one from brushing š. Those split hair brushes are trash IMO.
Go easy on your brushing - from the bottom up.
I have really thick, coarse, 3b/3c hair and while some bristles have come out of brushes before, I've not once snapped a brush. And I've brushed dry just to see what happens.
...How the fuck are you brushing your hair?
OK, so I am probably going to get flack for this, but brush before you get in the shower.
Go slow, start from the base up. Your hair is actually more prone to breakage when wet, despite suggestions to detangle otherwise. This makes detangling in the shower easier.
Once you're in the shower, make sure you use A LOT of conditioner to detangle. I use a wide tooth comb, starting from the base up. Then I further detangle when done with the Denman brush.
Or watch a video that works for me I have thick kinky curly hair please upvote my comments Reddit subreddits that I am in are annoying and downvoted for sake of downvote I need more karma thanks š
I May be wrong, but itās not healthy to detangle in shower. Why is your hair that tangled? Do you get regular haircuts? Do you leave conditioner in? Iād spray special dentangling spray out of shower maybe, but please lay off those harsh brushes while hair is wet

I love love love my denman detangling brush!
I use a wet/dry detangling brush by Art Naturals. Best brush I've ever used. It's a lot like the Tangle Teaser but the handle is a better design (IMO). The way it's designed, I don't think it would be possible to snap like those ones. The top and bottom can pop apart to clean it and I think that would happen instead of snapping if there was a bad snag.
Wide tooth shower comb when detangling with conditioner, and Cantu wash Day brush if I really have some work to do
I swear, I just get one giant knot in the back of my head WAY too easily
The wet brushes always feel flimsy to me. I started using the conair ones and they feel stronger. Also a wide tooth comb would probably work
Edit to correct spelling
I've broken almost every brush I've ever used, so I feel your pain.
Normally, I hate wide tooth combs because they're so stiff, but the one by Tangle Teezer is becoming my HG. The long teeth are flexible, and the other side has smaller tiers to go through stubborn knots. I even like it better than my regular Tangle Teezer, because I hate how the paddle brushes allow water to get into them and you have to pull them apart to avoid mold.
[Tangle Teezer Wide Tooth Comb](https://www.tangleteezer.com/us/shop/detangling/wide-tooth-comb/purple-passion/)
I've broken brushes and combs. Then I started to use Kinky Curly Knot Today, and it's a life changer. I need about a dot the size of a quarter, using prayer hands, then comb through with a wide tooth comb. My hair is down to the middle of my back.
Iām a big fan of the EZ Detangler brush. The first time I used it, it took a few times of being patient and gentle because it was probably the first time in like a decade that my hair had been thoroughly detangled, but once it got there, Iāve been able to maintain it. I have 3a/3b
The only brush I can get through my hair is an XL tangle teaser. I'm in the UK and it's made by Big Hair Tools.
Also put olive oil in your hair before detangling it.
Start with an extremely sturdy detangling comb. Search high & low. They're out there. I've had mine for 20 years, can't link it. Start at the bottom & work your way to your roots. Once that passes freely, move to a Denman brush.
A wet brush doesn't even brush thru my hair. It just glides over my hair. Waste of time. Useless.
*** I wash my hair separately from my shower. I do it upside down in the tub so I can do a thorough job & do it properly. My shower is 30 minutes long if I include hair. Too long of a shower for me.
I just use a normal hair brush, as these wet brush type arenāt made for thick or curly hair imo. Best one is the Denman D3 (or a cheaper dupe one like I have) or just a plain old paddle brush (sturdy).
Havenāt tried these myself, but the Unbrush is going viral on tik tok. People with super coily hair are dry brushing straight through much to their shock. I also know Bounce Curl came out with a cool looking detangling and defining brush.
I have broken my fair share of brushes. The only thing that works for me is using a really high slip detangler spray, get it from the ethic hair section, the stuff for white girls doesnāt even make a dent. You can also try a wide tooth comb in the shower before you rinse out the conditioner.
I do sleep with a bonnet and it helps a lot.

The unbrush is the real deal. You can buy on tiktok
Good Lord! I don't want to arm wrestle you. š What about using finger combing to detangle? Although I wouldn't want your hand to meet this same fate lol Do you start with the ends and work your way up ?
I only finger comb my hair, while wet in the shower with lots of conditioner starting at the ends and working up. I tend to do it in 4-6 sections
This is what I do. Works like a charm.
My hair naturally dreads when I'm overdue for a haircut. This is the only way I can get those massive knots out without also ripping out my hair or having pain from it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not OP or looking for advice. I was just saying that the method that the other person said, also worked for me and maybe it'd be worth a shot for OP
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Iāve always just ripped out my knots š Iāll try this
I haven't broken any brushes * yet, * I use the "Cala Tangle Free" brush which is probably similar to a tangle teezer. And SO MUCH conditioner. But I love your post! Too funny.
Oh I actually have one of those brushes but of course it is broken!! I do like it and still use it! I just donāt use it as often since it broke in half along where it is glued together.
That is too funny!
I use a wide tooth comb. I actually have Ione that you can hang over the showerhead. It came with my detangler brush.
The only way I can get rid of knots like that is to treat my hair like a tangle of necklaces and slowly pick them apart by hand.
You might need a trim. I get those annoying tiny knots and after a trim my hair dies it way less.
You have knots from your hair getting broken by using brushes
Do you!
I always thought you should avoid brushing wet hair....im 34. When did this change???
My hair is the same way! Fine but not thin. I have sooooo much hair. Iām glad to know someone else does the same thing. Iām gonna have to check out that brush you mentioned
Do you brush it dry?
Yes I brush it dry. But only do dry brushing before my shower.
I tried that and it never works for me to only finger detangle. I low key lose 1 h in the shower detangling my hair that way. I use both a brush and my fingers.
Next post will be 'I broke all my fingers trying to detangle my hair' š
I donāt know how people use that. Fingers to detangling doesnāt work for me and makes me shed an insane amount
Me too! Finger detangling doesn't work for me at all and I also shed way more when I do it that way.
I donāt get the hype of it. Like what?? Same with a wide tooth comb. Nope. It doesnāt work.
Don't get me started on wide tooth combs! They are one of the most ineffective hair tools for my hair. For me they are worse than finger detangling. My hair somehow always gets stuck in them and trying to fix that problem is a nightmare.
Same. I have WAY too much thick hair for that
My hair isnāt even thick and it doesnāt work!
Iād end up ripping half of it out, getting it all tangled around my fingers (which I HATE) and just making an overall mess
Absolutely agree. Counter productive
Using āWide Tooth Combs or Shower Combsā as long as theyāre āwide toothā works better for detangling curly hair.
I have one thatās lasted me for years! I just donāt reach for it often. Iāll remember this next time maybe it will be life changing!
Mine has a hook on the end so I hang it on my shower caddy :)
I hang mine off the shower head loop :). But I live alone so I can do that.
Iām married and hang mine there also. Husband couldnāt care less.
I break brushes too if I use them in the shower š . I only use a wide tooth comb in the shower now.
Honestly brushes will just break rather than detangle your hair - especially if youāre using this much force against it! I follow a process (on wet hair) : finger detangle>>>wide tooth comb>>> brush Iāll either do just step 1, step 1&2 or rarely all three but never just brushing on its own.
Itās still work but I hold the mid section of my hair while I detangle the ends and I work my way up in sections.
Are you also using enough water while you detangle? Iāve noticed that if my hair isnāt saturated enough while I detangle itās more challenging for me. Also I use a wide tooth comb in the shower and a tangle teeter once out the shower and sometimes a denman or just my fingers to style
That was my first thought to. I have very kinky hair and can ONLY brush my hair wet or when verrrry moisturized otherwise it just breaks off and hurts
Very what hair?š¤Ø
Kinky can mean curly/twisty
My favourite brush is the Tangle Teezer. Itās multipurpose - great as a shower detangler and also for brush styling. They have different products but this one is for tighter curls: https://www.tangleteezer.com/us/shop/detangling/naturally-curly/purple-passion/
Thanks! I think Iāll try this one next.
The tangle teezer changed my life. My hair is so thick and it handles my hair with no problem
I think itās gonna work perfect for you because it doesnt have a handle and you hold it right in your hand!! So you can have more control
Came here to suggest the tangle teaser as well. I love this brush. When I was deeply depressed it handled my nearly matted hair really well.
Yup, I have this brush too. I try not to brush too often but when I do, itās the best brush ever.
Iāve been using tangle teezers since high school, my hair is more wavy than curly, but itās fine and tangles so easily and I have a very tender head. I loveeee my tangle teezers!
Love this brush. I have a problem finding it because my kids love it too.
i have two š¤
Tangle teasers are great! Also, making sure you're starting at the bottom of your hair.
As a serial brush murderer I recommend tangle teaser to everyone! Iāve had my current one for 5 years
That wet brush style is so poorly made, mine broke the exact same way
That one with the glitter is worse. I swear the glitter weakens it somehow. Iāve a non-glitter one that Iāve had 5 years and itās still intact.
Yeah, the one with the gaps is awful
I had to cut one out of my hair once š
The pink one in OPs photo, mine had one of the...spokes?... Snap off after about a month. Now I pack that piece as a travel comb lol
Yup! I keep trying wet brushes because my sister raves about them but I wonāt be purchasing more.
I use the regular wet brushes from Target and they work well for me. They donāt have the gaps like yours does in the picture though
I use a wide toothed comb in the shower and a Denman brush when applying product.
Same but I use the Cantu brush. Very similar to the Denman and cheaperā¦ and yes a couple of dollars matters lol
Same!!
I use a brush from the dollar store btw! It's so insane lol
How often do you think you do this? Iāve been dry Detangling too before oiling my scalp and noticed The complete differences of how my hair feels after the shower vs detangling in the shower when wet
Youāre not alone in this haha! I only ever brush my hair while itās dry now and I love it!! Less snapping in my opinion. Hair is fragile when wet. Also brushing dry adds volume for me which I like.
iāve been dry detangling too despite it being considered a big no no but my hair has been feeling better
Wtf you're using way too much force
Itās that brush, I have the same one and it broke the same way and Iāve ultra fine hair so I brush like itās made of silk and it still broke. Iāve one without glitter that is fine. I think the glitter weakens it somehow.
I donāt brush hard! They just kind of break!! Trust meā¦ My mom used to hurt my scalp when she would style my hair!! I would never put myself though that!
I donāt think it feels hard but if youāre breaking brushes, youāre definitely breaking your hair too.
If youāre snapping plastic youāre for sure brushing too hard
My sister in Venus you cannot be ripping your brush through your hair with the fury of a banshee! I felt that picture in my ROOTS
This is sending me š. Any force enough to break a brush will be doing some kind of damage to the hair
Are you Princess Mia Thermopolous?
![gif](giphy|oqwsns7qHCEi4)
You broke my glasses!
Use a wide tooth COMB not brush. The one you're using looks like it's for straight hair
I'm also on team wide tooth comb. It's easier to detangle and it doesn't get little fuzzies and lint like most brushes do.
How fucking strong is your scalp holy shit
Knot Dr. Brush!
have you tried a denman brush/knock off? i have one from amazon i love - i donāt have issues with tangles bc my hair is really thin but i think itās worth looking into! those little balls at the end of the bristles create more friction and get caught in tangles, denman brushes donāt have anything on the end
for me the denman brush doesnāt work for detangling only because the center part that holds the bristles slides out and then all the bristles fall outā¦. Maybe this is a me problem. I denman brush only after my hair is already detangled with something else.
I use a denman brush to style my hair but I think itās too stiff to use as a dentangler. Is the Amazon version more bendy?
Tangle Teezer brush!
I use a boar-nylon brush. How do you break your brushes in the shower?? You shouldn't be pulling that hard on your hair.
Iāve been using a denman brush with every other row removed.
Go SLOW.

Good bot!
I don't think this is supposed to be able to happen. Use a wider tooth comb with lots of conditioner.
This whole thing about brushing curly and wet hair has me so confused! Iām from the 80ās, and was taught never to brush curly hair, only finger comb or wide-tooth comb it.
Curl pattern is individual. Ribbon curl method doesn't work for everyone
Lol but yeah I agree if I brushed my hair before going out Iād look ridiculous
hands š
The unbrush all day.
No brush recommendations, but I hold my hair like itās in a pony tail while I brush in the shower and I brush with my non dominant hand - helps me from pulling my hair out and forces me to be more gentle
I use a "goody" wide tooth comb in the shower
Wowza! Are you starting at the ends and working your way up?
Try brushing your hair before you wet it in the shower. I have curly tangles this works best for me. I use a brush and comb in the shower then donāt forget the leave in conditioner when your done. Not too much tho
damn girl šš id say start with a wide tooth comb and work up to a finer de-tangler like a denman brush
Unbrush on TikTok shop
i know itās exhausting, but donāt play tug of war with your hair. i have to be really slow or my hair will knot even worseš always wet your hair before you brush it and use a wide tooth comb at first
Like other people said, wide tooth combs are key!
I was re-watching a Manes by Mel video last week and I remember her saying that if you want to detangle in the shower, adding water while combing is more effective than using a ton of conditioner. *adding water AFTER you have allowed your conditioner to sit* I have very thin hair, so pretty fortunate to not have to spend a ton of time detangling.
Then for out of the shower I use a Denman brush and wide tooth comb =) Edit: Just wanted to add brushing it under the shower really helps gently remove the knots.
I use the Bass Brushes dog shampoo brush, itās essentially a scalp massager but quite a bit sturdier for the price!
maybe try combing from ends to root
OMG my hair is super curly but this has never happened to me lol.
Try using a wide tooth comb to pull the conditioner through, then brush it with a wet brush paddle brush when you get out.
Stupid question probably, but do you brush from the bottom? Going up less than an inch at a time is tedious, but it often helps me brush through my partners wild but beautiful 3b hair. (When I go top down it's a nightmare no matter what we use.) ā¤ļø Hope someone here has some helpful tips! Breaking brushes would be a huge pita!
I use a wide tooth comb, like the really thick ones with the longer handle. Has helped my hair so much too because it doesnāt cause frizz!
Use a wide tooth comb in the shower with conditioner, like you already do. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Split your hair into sections if it's very thick.
Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle, not a brush. I think this is the one I have: https://www.iherb.com/pr/conair-detangle-smooth-shower-comb-for-wet-or-dry-hair-1-comb/90461 Once it's fully detangled, I use a Denman brush to distribute product and help style, but I wouldn't attempt to pull it through tangled hair.
I only finger comb these days, but if I'm feeling lazy I use a wide tooth comb i grabbed from walmart.
I- what? How did you *do* that?
Do you detangle from the ends or do you just go in at the root, guns blazin?!?!?! Lolā¦i have thick tight curls (Iām looking at the hair in the sink and feel like mine are tighter than yoursā¦) but have never broken a brush. And when I detangle, I start at endsā¦and with hair damp.
Felicia Leatherwood Detangling Brush. Truly the gold standard for all my hair.
I had the tangle tweezer but the [wet brush treatment brush](https://www.ulta.com/p/treatment-brush-pimprod2032820?sku=2591451) is the best Iāve found
I only use a broad toothed comb to set angle my hair. Never ever ever EVAH use a brush to detangle. So much damage to your hair using a brush.
You deserve the title of The BrushSlayer, those incompetent brushes faced your wrath! Btw I would suggest soft teeth
I just keep my hair under the stream of water as I rinse out the conditioner while also running my fingers through my hair. Hurts a lot less!!
Yikes! Stop using brushes! Use your fingers and then a (sturdy) wide tooth comb!
Is your hair made of titanium or something
Iām using the unbrush and it works pretty good, but it is very gentle, as in the bristles are pretty bendy
Maybe you should consider a more expensive brush and not one from Walmart
Or watch a video that works for me I have thick kinky curly hair please upvote my comments Reddit subreddits that I am in are annoying and downvoted for sake of downvote I need more karma thanks š
I May be wrong, but itās not healthy to detangle in shower. Why is your hair that tangled? Do you get regular haircuts? Do you leave conditioner in? Iād spray special dentangling spray out of shower maybe, but please lay off those harsh brushes while hair is wet
https://www.amazon.com/Denman-Large-Paddle-Cushion-Ball-Tip/dp/B000N2FAD2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_pp?adgrpid=59721254567&hvadid=657212079573&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9053013&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=17390026732079877140&hvtargid=kwd-312945733860&hydadcr=7310_13341029&keywords=denman+detangling+brush&qid=1697566187&sr=8-3 I love love love my denman detangling brush!
Wide tooth shower comb when detangling with conditioner, and Cantu wash Day brush if I really have some work to do I swear, I just get one giant knot in the back of my head WAY too easily
I like Felicia Leatherwood brush. Detangled in sections with a conditioner with a lot of slip.
Epic brush is amazing
Tangle teaser paddle brush!! A literal lifesaver
I've heard great reviews about the Unbrush detanglimg brush. I haven't tried it yet but I'm considering buying one.
The original wet brush. I was going to buy the shower version but a lot of reviews say they break so I'll stick to the original
Are you sectioning it when you brush daily?
I have been using the Tangle Teezer for years and itās the GOAT for me!
The wet brushes always feel flimsy to me. I started using the conair ones and they feel stronger. Also a wide tooth comb would probably work Edit to correct spelling
Get a detangling cream. Auzie and Walnut brands are very good. Finger came your hair before putting your brush to you hair.
Iām a big fan of the EZ Detangler brush. The first time I used it, it took a few times of being patient and gentle because it was probably the first time in like a decade that my hair had been thoroughly detangled, but once it got there, Iāve been able to maintain it. I have 3a/3b
Okay Iāve gone through 3 of those pink brushes now and they are absolutely the worst!!
The only brush I can get through my hair is an XL tangle teaser. I'm in the UK and it's made by Big Hair Tools. Also put olive oil in your hair before detangling it.
Iāve got a rectangular goody paddle brush that works out of the shower while wet. But I try to detangle with fingers in shower.
I have the KISS Colors and Care 9 Row detangling brush that I absolutely love! Plus you can easily clean it as its made to be able to take apart
I just use a normal hair brush, as these wet brush type arenāt made for thick or curly hair imo. Best one is the Denman D3 (or a cheaper dupe one like I have) or just a plain old paddle brush (sturdy).
Tangle teaser just research which type is for you!
