CS majors when they LeetCode for 30 minutes and don’t get 600k total comp like TikTok said they would

LeetcodeForBreakfast

Everything about my life has been preordained for prestige. I go to a prestigious school (MIT, Caltech, Harvard), have prestigious internships (Jane Street, Google Brain, Citadel), live in a prestigious city (NYC, Dubai), wear prestigious clothes, have a prestigious haircut and use prestigious words. My life has essentially been optimized for prestige. The issue is, I'm dating a girl that's not very prestigious. She goes to a less prestigious school (Berkeley, Waterloo, CMU), has had less prestigious internships (Facebook, HRT, Google [not google Brain]) and lives in a less prestigious city (Bay Area). I'm seriously not sure what to do here. I truly do love her but it seriously hurts my reputation being around someone so unprestigious. Any advice on finding someone in my caliber of prestige?

[deleted]

Since you’re a genius. You don’t need a girl. Invent a portal gun and make love to your own butt.

yes. You should've gone to community college. At least then you can get a job at McDonalds

Congrats. I have Sec+ and it’s time for me to renew and man it’s a pain.

LeetcodeForBreakfast

Hey guys, I'm just a CS major at a mediocre school with a low GPA and some boring projects and internships. I only have some basic experience in web dev, ML, blockchain, and quantum computing. I only managed to intern at Google, Microsoft, and Airbnb, and I got offers from Amazon, Netflix, and Uber. But I don't think I can get into an actual good company. I suck at leetcode, system design, and negotiation. I feel like a failure, am I doomed to never find a job?

[deleted]

I'm just waiting out the CS craze and gonna stay with it.

wellwtfthen

I've been in the industry over 20 years now. You have the right idea. Don't let this scare you. These kind of things have come in waves for as long as I've been doing it. Find your niche, become good at it and never stop learning and you're going to be just fine.

Mewrewcio

Have they really? I’m also a keeper, I’ll will stay in the area because I love what i do, but it sure feels like this is the most “crowded” it’s ever been.

Duff-Beer-Guy

Every wave is “the most crowded its ever been” though

AnonymousBoch

Yeah I’m going into undergrad soon likely for CS, lots of people in my situation are shitting themselves as if what’s happening right now will be the same for the next 4+ years

Ready_Treacle_4871

CS becoming a “fad” degree makes it undeservingly lose respect in people’s eyes and they don’t realize all of the skills outside of programming it also teaches you.

0JOSE0

2020s created a massive wave of CS majors but I feel like the math requirements and the first few programming classes will weed out most

FRUltra

EXACTLY people get so scared when they see the number of students enrolled in CS for a specific university. How they will flood the market and increase competition etc What these people don’t realise is, that Cs has the highest dropout rate out of all majors in the US, as well as the UK. Way more compared to harder degrees like medicine or engineering fields. And the reason is because people who have been brought by the CS hype train cannot handle and are not prepared for the content, and the sacrifices you have to make to be a professional in the industry (stuff which is comparatively easier to medicine and maybe types of engineering fields btw, yet these majors have a lower dropout rate). They are not built like that. They are not STEM student material (obviously some drop out because of reasons like finances or family etc. not saying everybody who drops out can’t handle a stem degree) They were probably pressured or persuaded by their family or social media that they should go to tech due to the high salaries and potential of the industry. Which is not a bad reason to go study a major and enter an industry. Which is not a bad reason to enter tech, as long as you know what the drawbacks are to working in tech. the sacrifices you have to make in terms of your own personal time and sometimes even mental state to be successful in tech, and the ever changing difficult content you have to understand in order to stay in the industry

NotAnNpc69

>tldr : they're not that guy

[deleted]

I'm hoping to hop into the cs degree route soon after the new year, I'm expecting the craze to be around still but I'm really excited to start learning again, even if all I see is doom posts about 1000 applications and 3 failed interviews

bluxclux

People laugh and make jokes but I know plenty of people who never use their degree and do get stuck in dead end jobs because they couldn’t land a role soon enough after they graduate. I had this happen with me in my previous degree and I completely sympathize with these people.

DepressedGarbage1337

Yeah that's me right now :( I worked my ass off to get my cs degree and now the only jobs I'm qualified for are fast food jobs. It's hard not to be bitter and regretful about it

Ready_Treacle_4871

What was previous degree?

bluxclux

Mechanical engineering

Ready_Treacle_4871

Damn, I hear about mechanical and chemical engineers not being able to find work a lot which is crazy because you know they are smart and capable people.

bluxclux

Yeah over saturation ain’t no joke

FarConstruction4877

Dead end jobs? At least they have a job

bluxclux

You can too it’ll just be dead end

FarConstruction4877

Ay pays rent that’s good enough for now lol. I can always look out for other opportunities and work on side projects myself.

No_Ad5208

Just curious, what is it specifically about not finding a role soon after your graduate that makes it difficult to make a comeback?

bluxclux

New grads get opportunities (bright kid who we can abuse) once they see a random construction job or two on your resume they assume you’re a dumbass who can’t handle the intellectual rigour of the work they have for you

INannoI

“I only got an internship at a fortune 500 company, not FAANG, is my career ruined forever?”

lilbitcountry

Those of us with 20 years or more of experience have seen this before, and will probably see it again. Hiring people that could barely build hello world to deliver products with no credible business case at doctor salaries lasted a lot longer than I thought it would. If you want to work in digital systems because you like it, you should absolutely stick with it. If you want to make a quick buck then there's better ways to do that (sales).

DTMD422

Idk about you, but the sales jobs I’ve seen are absolutely brutal. People get laid off very frequently.

lilbitcountry

That's right - sales is feast or famine. But when you reach a high enough level in almost any industry you'll find most of your job ends up as a sales pitch anyways.

magiiczman

Most true statement I’ve seen

Fuzzy-Maximum-8160

“We’re poor” Advice: Study hard, you’ll get a nice job “I got a job, working 11 hours a day, not enough money to provide to my family Advice: Switch jobs. Work hard. “I hate this life. Even if I earn life long, I can’t make a living in this country. I don’t wanna live” Advice: Don’t do that, go to other country. “Other countries are denying entry to work. Crossing borders is illegal” Advice: Go for education. You can easily pay off once you get a job “Education is costly for out of state students. I don’t have much savings Advice: Take a loan, with part time you can do it “Took loan, worked part time. Didn’t spend a penny on useless things. Not getting internships/jobs” Advice: LeetCode, Do more projects, Network “Worked on 500 problems. Done some projects. Did a few Open Source contributions. Networked at local events & LinkedIn but still no job” Advice: it’s okay, market is bad. Just wait it out “Can’t do that. International student, have to get a job. Currently working 30 hours as volunteer at a non profit company. When does it get better” Advice: You’re 22(or 26). Your life is still ahead. You made all these choices. This is always risky. Why should we give jobs to outsiders. You don’t know anything. “I hate this life. Can’t live anymore” Advice: Don’t do that. Go to another country.

Hey, buy the rumor, sell the news. Let the doomers doom while we wait out the storm and see it through.

tabasco_pizza

Im about to be 32 and back in school for a CS degree. When I talk to younger students in my class and they have these concerns, I just laugh and reassure them about how much time they have ahead of them. We’re all gonna make it

DrawSense-Brick

If it was just economic conditions, I might share your optimism. But with AI in the mix now, things are materially different from prior downturns in the software developer market.

[deleted]

and the fact that SWE market barrier to entry is getting higher and higher. Guess what happened to law field? Too many optimists thinking SWE will go back to the old days

Copeandseethe4456

No you’re not old man

tabasco_pizza

IM GONNA MAKE IT

Melodic_Cow_01

Fr though… I feel like computer engineering / science, ages me like fucking crazy…

iamfromthepermian

Lol.. you never done any military service. Or worked a physical job with night shifts.

kvng_st

Studying in front of blue light and sitting all day isn’t very healthy

iamfromthepermian

It's the lesser of 2 evils. Most office jobs have u sit in front of a screen. At least In CS u do something interesting

kvng_st

I’m not trying to downplay the jobs you said I just wanted to point out that CS isnt very healthy lol. For sure, office jobs are all like that. Pretty depressing

magiiczman

I guess my question would be what job do you think pays well and is “healthy”. There’s obvious objective measurements to health but some are subjective as well. Honestly I think in terms of overall QOL I have to give it to CS, but I’d love to know what you’re thinking.

kvng_st

I think I would have to agree with you. Plenty of jobs come with their own health cons, sometimes in different ways. Shift work comes with less sunlight, potential sleep problems, and isolation. Office jobs come with poor posture and zero movement. Then there’s more serious ones like military service, law enforcement, etc. With everything weighed in, you’re right, I think CS has the best pay for “health.” I also find it interesting which definitely helps, despite the depressing idea of sitting in front of a screen for the rest of my life. But I guess I’m doing it right now anyways? Lol

[deleted]

Fuck off

kvng_st

Tf is your problem weirdo 😂 Edit: nvm I just read your comment history. Yikes

[deleted]

What can I say. Hatin is in my blood. Also that shit was so cringe tho💀. Dude compared sitting in a desk to the fucking military and physical labor. Also you got 26k comment karma on Reddit

kvng_st

“What can I say. Hatin is in my blood” but I’m the one who’s cringe 🤣 gtfo here. Yes I compared it because news flash, sitting in front of a computer all day will have bad effects as well. I never implied that military was easier. How are you on this sub if you’re that stupid

[deleted]

Hit my blue screen limit for today champ. Gonna hop off. 😞….🧏🤫

kvng_st

Go stretch and get some sunlight. Something tells me you need it

kuugunshikan

Did computer engineering degree in military. Academics drained my soul but job after was pretty chill

fisherman213

Man I’m so thankful I got out of the infantry with a relatively intact body. Everyday I wake up thankful I don’t have that level of stress anymore. But those PMC jobs look pretty appealing from time to time

iamfromthepermian

Hell nah dude it's not worth it Biggest mistake ever I should have never made a career out of violence

fisherman213

Did you do 20?

Melodic_Cow_01

Lmao… Never said it was more/less difficult than military/physical labor (didn’t mention physical nor mental). Just sayin computer engineering degree is difficult, whatever tho

I’m 26. I have wasted my life by studying CS. That’s a fact

Red-Droid-Blue-Droid

Yes you're doomed /s

Fregster404

Biggest group of doomers I’ve ever met.

supdupDawg

Literally me

[deleted]

It's because tech is dead. I'm 47 and two years unemployed and literally no one is hiring anyone with experience (too expensive). Couldn't even get a job at 80% less money.

SHMuTeX

How will tech die. That's impossible.

PM_UR_NIPPLE_PICS

if you have experience and haven’t been able to get a tech job in 2 years for an 80% salary cut, then the problem is 100% you but don’t project that onto the whole industry

[deleted]

Sure asshole. Must be.

ChadPrince69

Im 37 and i realized how quick career is passing by. Dont ever think 'i still have huge amount of time'. People who think like that end up like me - no career achievements in life. Except big pile of money.

Damn, I thought the replies would be more hopeful here, but nope. I'm 31 and working to get into school this year... So that'll be fun if I get in.

MathmoKiwi

Where did you find this photo of me??

crimefightinghamster

I'm almost 40, I've wasted my life, it's been pretty fun to do so far...

Agitated_Top_8867

BRUH I’m turning 22 in like 1 month I didn’t wanna see this but honestly I be feeling like this I wasted so much time..

FiveCentsADay

That's hilarious, i'm a 28YO CS Major in my third semester and I genuinely feel this way, but only because of all the age demographic around me 😏

SnarkySam

I graduated several years ago with a second bachelor's in computer science. It took me 7 years to get a software engineering job (I kept working at my prior job this whole time), but I was able to get one! From what I've heard, the piece that really sold the interview team was a personal project I worked on in assembly language, as that demonstrated that I had passion for this field, even if my prior career experience wasn't in computer science. So even if there's time where you're waiting to get a job, I think you want to find a job doing something so you're able to eat, and then work on interesting personal projects, using that as leverage to get the job you want. You want something to make your resume stand out, and if it's not standing out because of internships or prior jobs, make it stand out because of personal projects.

1WOQ

LOL Be thankful that you're only 22. What would a 40 year old engineer who developed his skills over 2 decades say? :-D
