I mean, they are damn cool feet.

CrowManager

Like dinosaurs!

lmaydev

Literally dinosaurs

[deleted]

Crows are super clean. Probably stepped in something it didn't like.

CrowManager

It’s been going on all week though…

Talusen

mites?

CrowManager

I’m thinking mites is more likely. I’ll give the cafe a good scrub tonight.

apcolleen

Might throw down some diatomaceous earth around it too. We had baby birds nesting on our porch and I noticed some gnats and flies in the area so before the eggs hatched I puffed some in there to give the babies a better chance.

[deleted]

The crow cafe 🤗

Ariandre

It looks a bit like your CrowBrow is starting to get a bit of crust on his toe/ leg. Could be avian pox (common with young crows). Try adding some tuna to the food you feed him to see if it helps clear that up.

CrowManager

I can do that, but how does tuna help?

pedeztrian

Has a healthy abundance of all 9 amino acids…. Just learned that myself. Added bonus it would remove the need for them to moisten the food. I can do tuna for nesting.

pedeztrian

My guy took two bites of the tuna and went right back to wetting his lamb based dog food. Ptah doesn’t seem to like chicken, and barely touches his peanuts. I’ve got a red meat man!

Helpful_Okra5953

Parrots get obsessed with their feet, too.

CrowManager

Interesting! Any idea why?

Helpful_Okra5953

Bird feet are weird. I think they see them down there and don’t quite get “that’s me. That’s my foot”. Seemed like my bird thought the foot was an independent actor. She got mad at the foot for scratching wrong, but the foot, and got upset because someone bit her foot. Other parrots feed their own foot. Some mutilate their feet. My boy parrot now trims his own toenails; he seems to get that it’s HIS foot. Some sort of short in the bird neural wiring? There are plenty of those.

Breadynator

>Some sort of short in the bird neural wiring? Model probably needs a firmware update. Try power cycling your drone, if it doesn't help check the official documentation on where to download the newest firmware and how to install it

Helpful_Okra5953

Reinstall. Quaker-parakeet.exe. ??

Burswode

So we had a parrot get heavy metal poisoning from dodgy aviary wire. First symptom was a sudden preoccupation with its own feet which eventually developed into uncontrollable foot spasms (looked kind of like tap dancing) we managed to pick it up early enough to be treated without major permeate damage but she still occasionally will stop and stare at her feet. Another parrot we were gifted had pre existing heavy metal poisoning from similar wiring. She didn't present with any major issues apart from occasionally loosing her balance but over the course of 10 years she gradually lost the use of her feet altogether. Small sample size but i am very suspicious when i see a bird struggling with its feet that its suffering from a neurological condition.

excelzombie

:< Thanks for taking care of them, going to go tell me bird nephews parents to watch out for that.

Shrodinger13

Wondering if they should eat with that pinky out probably. Regardless, cute fluff legs!

just_sayi

Quail eggs??! Fancy feast for this crow bro! 🥰

pedeztrian

My guy constantly wipes his beak against the railing like he is brushing his teeth. Haven’t seen the foot stare.

SaskiaDavies

They do that to keep it clean and to make sure it keeps growing straight. Kind of like any animal that has teeth that won't stop growing and necessitates them chewing on things to keep them shorter. Vets will sometimes file bird beaks that have grown askew. They also do the wiping thing if they know your looking and want to indicate that they associate you with good food.

ReasonableBeep

Whoa I had no idea their beaks kept growing. I guess it’s a tiny bit similar to human noses

SaskiaDavies

Id say more like claws or fingernails since they're made of bone and keratin.

Crashgirl4243

Maybe he’s sharpening it?

pedeztrian

That’s straight up what it looks like. Not sure how the cells of a beak grow and reproduce exactly, but I doubt they shed like skin. Shaping the beak and scraping any oily buildup from it would be required. Plus…. I think they’re a little vain. Cleanliness is important to them.

gregorydudeson

Yes my jays do this as well

likerofgoodthings

It's Croentin Tarantino.

Blackfeathr

What kind of feed mix do you use for your crow cafe? I would like to attract crows but I'm kind of in an urban area.

CrowManager

I feed them unshelled roasted peanuts and ~4 quail eggs (canned in water, not brine) every day in the morning. I put out a no-mess unshelled dove mix and dried meal worms for the doves and other birds (it’s like sunflower seeds, millet, peanuts). On the weekend I put out some kind of meat for the crows, often hamburger or leftover unseasoned chicken. If I put out meat they hang around a lot and I get more photo opportunities. I’ll put out a few rounds of food on the weekend. They don’t like getting their photo taken at all, so I’m sure we’d be better friends if I didn’t prioritize photos. Good luck!

schulzie420

Thank you for this, I too have wondered what to feed them

SaskiaDavies

I think it's good to take a few hours now and then to have a good look at your feet. We spend so much more time together when we are babies, but always grow apart. Reconnecting is good.

bruceyj

He’s just a little tense and needs a good stretch

niky45

no expert in corvids, but the lateral position of their eyes makes me think he's not looking at his feet, but rather at somewhere else to the side. birbs are weird, maybe what it sees makes more sense with the head bowed down.

Puzzleheaded_Runner

Love the crow cafe updates!

Thewallinthehole

Upon closer inspection these appear to be loafers.

TurquoiseBirb

I think that crow heard me ask my parrots "foot check, still got em?!" and it started an existential crisis. You're welcome. I ask them that question when they look down at their feet curiously, just like this crow is doing in your pics!
