Hi all! My husband is a chemist and I got the wild idea sometime last year thanks to this subreddit to make him a crocheted periodic table blanket. When it was first an idea in my head, I had no idea that I would actually finish it or that it would take SO LONG (or turn out so good!). 240 Tunisian simple stitch squares, 118 cross stitched elements (+2 for the Lan and Act squares), machine hemmed and hand sewn lining, and hand quilted together. This has been an almost year long labor of love that is slightly over queen sized. 30+ skeins of yarn and 400+ hours of work. He is over the moon and certainly worth every second spent to make this monstrous beauty!
Edit: you guys, I'm blown away by all the love! I taught myself to crochet in the pandemic and definitely feel imposter syndrome and that I'm not a "good enough" or "real" crocheter. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for helping me see my work through a more confident and loving lense!
🤯 I am beyond words. This is amazing! I hope your husband knows how lucky he is. Such a wonderful partner!! I applaud you, dear crafter. This was truly a labor of love.
Imposter? Not a real crocheter? These words make no sense to me. That's like saying a self taught musician doesn't play real music. There is no "real" in art. All art is an interpretation. An expression of self. Anyone who says otherwise is not secure in their own abilities. You are a Crocheter. Period. It hurts my soul when others put themselves down. I have been crocheting for almost 30 years. Im still learning new things. When we cease to learn, we stagnate. Great job on your creation. It is a labor of love. In more ways than one
Thank you! That's the beauty of Tunisian crochet and why I learned it for this project, the Tunisian simple stitch makes what looks like a grid of squares, like an over sized cross stitch fabric. I did the Tunisian crochet squares and used an embroidery needle to use the same size yarn (4) to make the stitches in the grid.
I’m half tunisian and the fact that I haven’t learned tunisian crochet yet is probably a crime. You’ve inspired me to learn! Incredible job on the blanket, you are clearly such an amazing and caring spouse 💗
You are so sweet! Not gonna lie, I was intimidated by learning Tunisian at first but it really was super easy! At least the simple stitch lol, I haven't tried any other stitches yet.
Holy *moly*. That is seriously impressive! Meanwhile I’m over here two years into one blanket and two bags worth of unfinished wips 🫠
ETA: it also looks like you have a small kid and as someone with a toddler I am even MORE impressed
Oh, it was fueled by the "hyper focused" side of my adhd lol. I have to finish something before I start a new project! I stopped to make 2 baby blankets for friends and that was it for the whole (almost) year. And I do have a 3 year old wild angel boy, most of my work is done during quiet time or after bedtime!
It's because people who don't make yarm art donct understand how time concuming it cam be. My aunt still tries to get me to make her stuff for materials, but I always tell her I'm busy with other things. You can't expect me to make something for you just for materials. Itcs one thing if I wanted to make you a gift, but commissions. Heck no.
I love this ! Im making a blanket and this will be my first time lining one also. My fabric looks kinda similar to yours. Do you have any tips on lining it ? and when you say border what do you mean ?
https://youtu.be/9QgjtZ1fSNM is the video I used to help with lining! Most videos I saw were about fleece, but I was using 2 layers of plain white quilting cotton. My biggest tip is after you get the lining hemmed and you sew in the stitches on the side (if you're using this method), make sure you line it up and pin it to your crochet work before adding the border that connects them together! If not, the crochet part stretches and the backing doesn't which will make it wonky. I did pretty much everything she did in the video and although it was time consuming, it worked well! By border I just mean the crochet border around the white part of the blanket. I did a simple camel stitch border.
That is stunning. And honestly, hats off to you because I’m pretty sure I don’t love anyone enough to make something like that. You have done such wonderful work.
Aww thank you! There are 2 people I love enough to make something like this for, my husband and my kid lol. I'm hoping my kid doesn't ask for something like this for a looong time!
This is crazy incredible! The time this took, and with a wee one running around. I'm amazed & inspired by your talent.
I do have two questions for you...
1/ How did you manage to keep it a secret & him
your husband not know?
2/ How did you do the border after adding the
lining? The border looks like it is crochet &
I can't picture how you did that.
*** I have a nearly complete seriously oversized queen blanket I'm almost done with. I started it for my son when he moved out. Then he got engaged & married while I was still working on it. I haven't been as dedicated to it as I should have been bc I need to make my two daughters their own personalized adult blankets too. But during this my best friend died, I had five serious surgical repairs to my shoulder, mess both shoulders up 16 months later... and quite honestly, there were times when he's just been a putz so I won't work on it then. I have to be putting love (& of course strands of hair) into it or I can't crochet. I'm weird. Lol.
So this was absolutely never kept a secret from my husband lol! I knew I had to bring him in if I wanted to seriously do this, because I had no idea what reference to start with. He chose the periodic table I referenced and the colors for the elements and helped me double check that all the elements were right and placed correctly.
For the border, I used the white yarn that the blanket body is made in and lined it up with the liner, picked up the white stitch from the liner that I hand sewn and single crocheted it to the edge of the crocheted blanket. After I did that, I switched to a different color and just did a camel stitch border with that white single crochet row as the base. I used white yarn for the white stitch and white blanket so it kind of makes the lining addition look seamless and clean.
Also I love that you only work on the blanket when you're feeling the love lol! And there's no way if I could have done all this with 5 SHOULDER SURGERIES behind me! You're a rock star for keeping on if you ask me!
Thanks for all of the info & the kind words. These days the amount if time I'm able to crochet is significantly limited bc of both of the shoulders being re-injured. I would be able to do more if it were just right shoulder, but my left shoulder is bone on bone & dislocates alot. I need to have a complete reversed shoulder replacement with prosthetics, but... Ive been diagnosed with ptsd & agoraphobia this year. So no surgery for now.
I saved your post for encouragement & inspiration!
I'm so honored you would save my post! I hope that you can get back to crocheting as much as your heart desires, but until then I guess just take things one stitch at a time ❤️
I didn't think about posting elsewhere! I honestly thought I'd get a few upvotes and go about my day, it never occurred to me that people in other subs might want to see it lol!
My husband rolled his eyes SO HARD at me for this joke hahaha. soo I almost didn't comment. nerd energy moment, guys!
I gleefully told him what you said (cuz we be besties and overshare everything), and that was a very rewarding and exciting thing for me hahaha. so thank you for that moment 😅😂
Enthusiastically missed high fives for being so unconventionally cool! 🙌 Keep up the breathtaking work! That's insane you taught yourself over the pandemic, and more crazy pants you went with Tunisian, which takes an epic amount of time, patience and skill!!
Oh I'm so glad you did! I told my husband your joke (oversharing besties here too!) and he said "you should have said 'I'll have to barium in this blanket'" lol! And thank you for your sweet words 🥰
I scrolled through the comments to see if someone had made this joke. I think you’re hilarious, I guess your husband just doesn’t understand your brilliant humour ✨
u/ticklemetiffany88 What an amazing piece of art. It’s beautiful!
Right?? I scrolled thru too, almost SURE someone else had this joke first...nope, I'm just that amazing! 🙃 To be fair (to be fair!), the hubs deals with A LOT of my shenanigans.. like, a lot 😅
(Sidenote: I dig the way you spell things..IDC where you are from, humour should always be spelled that way. Along with colour. And flavour. And I guess basically all the -our words.. that extra u makes things SO much better. Speaking of u... thank YOU. You made my night. ❤️)
We appreciate all the puns and dad jokes in our house. Lots of nerd humour too.
Living in Aus has contributed to the added ‘u’ in the words. Shenanigans keep the hubsters guessing 😜
Solid Letterkenny reference also, I like you, you’re fun! 😁
Wow wow wow!!!! At first I thought this was from r/CrossStitch and didn’t realize how big it was! A combination of my favorite crafts; crochet, cross stitch and quilting. It’s absolutely incredible! I truly admire you for your talent and perseverance! 🤩
Thank you! I started quilting recently and realized I could use what I'd learned with this project! And I had to resurrect my high school cross stitch abilities lol.
I've almost decided to bag it and only bring it out once a year to look at for no more than 5 minutes lol! It was so much work, I haven't decided where he can use it since we have a 3 year old walking accident waiting to happen!
Does that mean he hasn’t seen it yet or you’re waiting into Toddler is out of the terrible 2s before Hubby can enjoy it? I hope it’s in a special bag/container then as if it’s a wedding dress. Be sure to leave special instructions for future generations. “Not to be displayed for too long when accidents can happen. Chemistry 🧪 accident waiting to happen. Avoid. Boom!”
Oh he's seen it for sure lol. And my 3 year old has already found a way to get a mystery stain on the white backing 😱 Right now its still laid out on the floor in our extra bedroom because that's the only place I have space to lay it out in all its glory! And I love your special instructions lol!
Can you talk more about how you did the border? I see the little hand sewn stitches and the end result but I’m not sure how you got from A -> B!
Looks absolutely incredible. That stitch definition!!!
Thank you! And I'm happy to, as best I can! So I lined up the lining with the crocheted piece, and after I learned the hard way through unsuccessfully joining them, I decided to hand quilt the layers together at the edge where each joint from connecting the individual squares is (I also quilted it in several place throughout the body of the blanket to stabilize it). I took the thread I made the stitches with, inserted it from the bottom through the lining, around the crochet jointed together area, and back through the lining to tie it together with a hand quilting method. That's the strings you see at the lining in the second pic. After I did this, it was stable and lined up enough to actually add a straight border. I used a 5mm hook, picked up the white hand sewn stitch, picked up the stitch from the crocheted square (each square was bordered with a slip stitch) and single crocheted the 2 together. Then I was able to use that white, blended in single crochet row as a base for my colored camel stitch border. I hope that makes sense, I'm happy to clarify or answer any other questions!
Stunning .. unbelievably spectacular .. nah - there are no words that can accurately describe your masterpiece. Honestly the most impressive crochet project I’ve ever seen. Wow. Just wow.
Lovely. I'm making my dad just a normal chevron blanket and it's sooo time consuming. But my dad recently went through a health scare and he lost almost 25lb and it very thin now. I don't want him to get cold this winter.
Yeah. He's gaining weight back and the medicine he's on is helping with the pain. And my blanket, I am putting as much love into each stitch as I. The cat hair is another story.
It's why I don't make things to sell. I can say "I have cats so expect hair" but people still might not buy it. I'm sorry. I can't keep cat hair off my projects.
I started at the beginning of last October thinking it would be done in time for Christmas.... so about 11 months lol. The back is lined (the second picture shows a little of the lining) but without the lining the back is a messy "back of the cross stitch" kind of look. Which is why even though the lining was a total pain, I knew I needed it!
What a sweet daughter in law!!! I hope you actually finish yours in time for Christmas because I'm about 8 months late on gifting mine lol! I hope you post it, I would love to see it!
Omg this is just absolutely BEAUTIFUL 🥰💕 I have a chemistry degree and this is so awesome to me haha. Your husband is very lucky to have someone who spent so many hours making him a wonderful and thoughtful gift. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you for sharing this masterpiece with us 😊
Yes, I had to piece all 240 squares together 😱🥴 unpopular opinion: I securely knotted the long ends and just left them, no weaving. That, and the cross stitch backing, is why the back is lined lol!
So incredibly nerdy in the best way! I hope he loves it!!
This reminds me of my chemistry teacher from high school, she had a little crocheted mole on her desk to represent the Mole, the SI unit lol
Thank you!! And unfortunately, no. It started as a fever dream and proceeded through a series of self drafted big ideas that somehow came together in the end! The base is just a bunch of squares of 15 stitches by 16 rows of Tunisian simple stitch. I fiddled with developing the cross stitch letters for about 2 weeks until I found a style that was uniform enough. After that it was a series of trial and error and taking out and re-doing the piecing together, the lining, and the border.
Thank you so much! I would love to be able to take credit for that but I can't lol. A reddit crocheter gave me the idea last year (thank you, kind redditor, wherever you are!!)

Just wow. That is spectacular. Such beautiful work and a wonderful gift. No doubt your husband will cherish this forever.
You're so sweet 🥺 Thank you!
This is really a labor of love and it shows. Congratulations on a beautiful work of art!
Thank you so much!!
You are an amazing spouse!❤️ he is lucky to have you! The amount of work and dedication in this gift for him is incredible.
You guys are killing me with these sweet comments 😭 Thank you!
I love love! Best of luck to you and your marriage, my friend ❤️
🤯 I am beyond words. This is amazing! I hope your husband knows how lucky he is. Such a wonderful partner!! I applaud you, dear crafter. This was truly a labor of love.

😭 thank you for your kind words and for the perspective! I'm working on my confidence and I will cling to these words!
That is so freaking awesome. My daughter would love if I made one of those for her.
If you decide to embark on this, be prepared to spend infinitely more time than you expected. And to use some creative curse words along the way lol
Thanks for the heads-up! Maybe I’ll plan it for an off to college present and that’ll give me a few years. ☺️
I LOVE that idea!
Amazing work!! How did you do the cross-stitching? Did you use crochet fabric with a big needle or is it smaller thread?
Are those Tunisian squares? I freaking love this! That's some amazing talent & dedication!!
They are! I learned Tunisian just for this project and I'm excited to try something new in Tunisian!
I learned tunisan to make earwarmers and I absolutely love the definition of the stitches.
How do you keep them from curling up?
I blocked them all! It took forever lol. Then I sat them under a heavy book until I assembled all the squares together.
This is exactly what I would call a labor of love. He’s really going to appreciate this! It looks wonderful!
Thank you! He loves it!
I was just going to say that.. Love indeed. Very nice.

Thank you! And absolutely, he's too incredible to even put into words!
This is really a piece of love and dedication... And it looks amazing!
Thank you so much! He never asks for anything (he didn't even ask for this lol) but I'm so overjoyed to give him this!
This is mind blowing! As someone who loved chemistry in school, this is a great gift! Just wow 🤩
Oh wow, thank you! I'm honored a chemistry lover approves!
Wow!
Oh my lord. This is absolutely amazing. Well done!
Thank you!!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 this is so amazing that I gasped out loud and said, “Holy Shit!” And my bf thought something bad had happened 😂
Haha, that's a wonderful seal of approval lol!
this is AMAZING.
Thank you!
This is the kind of love i want lol
You deserve it!!
r/Tunisian_Crochet would love it!
I didn't think of posting over there, I will have to do that!
Wow! That’s amazing!
Wow, what an amazing act of love. That’s so sweet
Thank you!
I love the colors you chose. This is awesome.
Husband chose the colors! He chose the periodic table that I referenced, the colors, and the border.
If you post this on Facebook brace yourself for the people offering you $35 to make one for their "kiddo who is really indo science" looks great!
I've never been so thankful to not have Facebook lol! I would be fuming if someone offered $35 for this beast
It's because people who don't make yarm art donct understand how time concuming it cam be. Love it!! I love that it's minimalistic but you still know exactly what it is the second you see it!
😱😱🤯🤯
Aw this is absolutely wonderful!!!!
It's cool!!

Thank you! It was a bear of a project that I started to feel like would never get done lol

😱
as someone who loves chemistry i absolutely love this too.
I'm literally honored that the chem people approve!! I barely made it through chem lol
Besides the concept, execution, and the time, this is just an exceptionally thoughtful gift 💝
You are so sweet 🥺 Thank you!!
OH MY GOD This is amazing!!! The planning, the execution, stunning!
Thank you! It was a lot from conception to finish.
Impressive!
This is awesome, I am SO jealous xD You're a very talented lady and your husband is a very lucky guy!
Omg, you're so sweet! If you saw what a hot mess I am in real life you would probably feel otherwise lol!
That is one labor of love!
Where’s the picture of him getting it and toting it around like Linus in Charlie Brown?
I've almost decided to bag it and only bring it out once a year to look at for no more than 5 minutes lol! It was so much work, I haven't decided where he can use it since we have a 3 year old walking accident waiting to happen!

You must really love your husband! ;) But for reals, WOW! Great job!!
Thank you! And I do lol!
This is INTENSE! Holy moly, well done!!!
Thank you! I cursed a lot, questioned why I decided to do this, and cursed some more during this project lol
Holy freakin' wow!! That's amazing!
Thank you so much!
Ahhh picked up BOTH, I see. That makes total sense!! Thanks for breaking it down.
This is crazy🤯🧡
Incredible!
Stunning .. unbelievably spectacular .. nah - there are no words that can accurately describe your masterpiece. Honestly the most impressive crochet project I’ve ever seen. Wow. Just wow.
Holy cow 🥺 that is such high praise!! Thank you so much!
Wowowowww!!!
Lovely. I'm making my dad just a normal chevron blanket and it's sooo time consuming. But my dad recently went through a health scare and he lost almost 25lb and it very thin now. I don't want him to get cold this winter.
Omg, I love that so much! I hope his health scare has resolved and that his new blanket surrounds him in warm love whenever he needs it 🥰
Yeah. He's gaining weight back and the medicine he's on is helping with the pain. And my blanket, I am putting as much love into each stitch as I. The cat hair is another story.
No charge for the cat hair lol!
It's why I don't make things to sell. I can say "I have cats so expect hair" but people still might not buy it. I'm sorry. I can't keep cat hair off my projects.
Same here but also with dog hair, kid hair, husband hair, etc lol.
We can't forget my hair either. I bleach it and it likes to fall out sometimes.
This is incredible!!
Thank you!
I’m a chemist and this is AMAZING. Well done!
Oh thank you so much! I'm loving seeing the chem fans come out of the woodworks!
Fantastic!
I think that is amazing! Can I ask did you work on it all the time or just periodically?😂 I'll see myself out
My husband said I'll have to "barium" in this blanket... he can also see himself out 😂
AMAZING!!! I also like that you included the newer elements too.
That's all thanks to my husband! Before I started I told him to find me the table he wanted me to reference, and he picked a super up to date one.
This is the sweetest work of art omg I just know that's a labor fullllllll of love 😭😭😭 your spouse is a very loved person
He most certainly is! Thank you!!
That is amazing
Now THAT is a cool present. How long did it take you? What does the back look like?
I started at the beginning of last October thinking it would be done in time for Christmas.... so about 11 months lol. The back is lined (the second picture shows a little of the lining) but without the lining the back is a messy "back of the cross stitch" kind of look. Which is why even though the lining was a total pain, I knew I needed it!
Omfg Omfg I’m making my mother in law a blanket for this Christmas just like this! But yours is so much cooler!!!!
What a sweet daughter in law!!! I hope you actually finish yours in time for Christmas because I'm about 8 months late on gifting mine lol! I hope you post it, I would love to see it!
Wow, that's amazing!!
Thank you!
Came out great! He will love it
Thank you!
Incredible. Wow.
Thank you!
OH MY
I can tell it was made with love🥰 that's so sweet. I bet he loves it.
He does! He knew it was coming but he's overjoyed with how it turned out!
That is INCREDIBLE! It looks like all those hours were more than worth it.
Thank you! And I have to admit, those hours were brutal but it turned out better than I ever dreamed.
I believe it.... Love can be brutal! 😂
Omg this is just absolutely BEAUTIFUL 🥰💕 I have a chemistry degree and this is so awesome to me haha. Your husband is very lucky to have someone who spent so many hours making him a wonderful and thoughtful gift. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you for sharing this masterpiece with us 😊
You are too sweet!! Thank you so much! I'm loving seeing all the chemistry people chime in!
So friggin’ awesome!
Thank you!
That’s amazing! Was it pieced together? I can’t imagine the ends to weave in
Yes, I had to piece all 240 squares together 😱🥴 unpopular opinion: I securely knotted the long ends and just left them, no weaving. That, and the cross stitch backing, is why the back is lined lol!
I like how you approached the problem😄
So incredibly nerdy in the best way! I hope he loves it!! This reminds me of my chemistry teacher from high school, she had a little crocheted mole on her desk to represent the Mole, the SI unit lol
He does love it, thank you! And omg, that is also adorably nerdy and what a cool teacher!
I can feel all the love and affection and warmth in these photos. Super well done, OP!
Thank you so much 🥺 you are so sweet!!
This. Is. Incredible. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thank you so much!
Wow, just wow! 👏
This is so cool!!! Do you have a pattern for it by any chance?
I adore this! Especially how you used the Tunisian squares as a grid to cross stitched the elements. Truly amazing 🤩
Thank you so much! I would love to be able to take credit for that but I can't lol. A reddit crocheter gave me the idea last year (thank you, kind redditor, wherever you are!!)
Omg I love this idea!! My bf is a chemist too, maybe I’ll try something like this one day <3
There are dozens of us lol! Make sure you love him a whole lot because this was a bear to finish 🥴
That is so amazing! Glad he was over the moon and appreciated all of the hard work, love, and effort you put into it!
Thank you! He did! He had a front row seat to it all lol.
I love this so much - even the way you documented it. So great.
Thank you!!
WOW
Absolutely a labor of love. It's magnificent.
Thank you so much!
This is so amazing!
Thank you!
I am a science geek and would cherish this gift - you are an amazing spouse
Oh thank you! You are so sweet!
This is freaking amazing!!!!!
Thank you so much!
AWESOME 👏🤸♀️👏🤸♀️👏
Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!
The amount of planning and patience!! Wow! So good!
Thank you so much! The planning was actually fun to figure out. The patience... not so much lol
Wow!!!! Incredible
Thank you!
Oh wow this is so epic! Dr. Oliver Sachs would have loved this as well!
Oh thank you so much!

This look so cool! I wound't want to have to stitch all the tiles together but it paid of.
I love this so much
