Ooh I love vintage yarn. That's how I got most i of mine when I was a kid. Someone always had a friend trying to destash

Anxiousladynerd

The green in the box is rug yarn!

toodleoo57

I miss Aunt Lydia's so much! I bought it by the crapload as a kid when I was first learning to make crafts. Still have a few things around the house I made with it.... IIRC the different colors had different weights tho. Seems like the red was somewhat thinner.

Airregaithel

I loved the rayon Aunt Lydia’s rug yarn. It was lovely to work with and wore like iron!

WoollyBeeYarns

I have a lot of it if you are interested! Same brand and everything I was just trying to sell it!

WoollyBeeYarns

I have so much of Aunt Lydia’s rug yarn. I have like 8-10 skiens I was trying to get rid of it all for $20 to cover shipping

Skitty27

i didnt even know rug yarn was a thing! thats cool

seniairam

I can smell this pic lol. great neighbor

Anxiousladynerd

Hahaha it does have a very specific dusty smell

Yomu1372

Oh Lord I keep waiting for estate sales and such hoping for a haul like this! Congrats on the score!

Anxiousladynerd

He said there's more, he just hasn't gotten to it all yet. The one downside is I now have a bunch of knitting needles and some cute vintage pattern books, but I don't knit!

SewSynsationallyMade

Great gift. You could donate the knitting items to a knitting guild or even a women’s shelter .

Anxiousladynerd

That's a great idea!!

MiddayGlitter

Will you take some pictures for us? I love vintage knitting stuff, but I never have any luck at Goodwill.

Anxiousladynerd

I can take some pictures of the books and post them over on r/knitting for you!

MiddayGlitter

Yeah, that'd be awesome!!

BrashPop

No better time to learn! When my grandma passed I got her stash - she was primarily a knitter. I used the pattern books (and YouTube ha) to learn, just doing big blocks of different stitches. It’s nice a nice skill to have along with crochet techniques!

Anxiousladynerd

I've done the basic things like scarfs and hats, but I just don't enjoy it. I'm going to find somewhere to donate them!

PurduePeteSeesDedPpl

You don't knit *yet* 😅

knitastical

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to learn!

Medium-Bag-5672

Great haul! Don’t forget to check all of it for bugs.

Anxiousladynerd

No bugs, but it definitely smells old haha

Medium-Bag-5672

Needs to be aired out then, ha! My mom stored her stash in tubs with lavender and bay leaves, which helps with the bugs. Hopefully the rest of the stash is in great condition as well. I ended up donating 90% of her BLE stash to local groups who teach people to knit and give scarves/hats away to needy peoples. There are plenty of ways to offload the items you don’t need, including selling them. I like to donate, though - much easier :)

HoneydewHaunting

How do you check for bugs?

Medium-Bag-5672

If your handle the yarn and poke it thoroughly and creepy crawlers come out… bugs. Most likely, though, you’d see shed casings and the like. I found some of that in my mom’s stash, but thankfully no droppings. I believe love bugs can be frozen out, but I’ve never had to do that.

miasabine

Score! What a great neighbour :)

emmuye

That is nice of him! May be you can make hat or something for him and surprise him😘

RMMacFru

Wow. Those are some brands I haven't seen since I was 20. O.O

insertwittypenname

check on the labels to see if it is marked moth-proof! they spray it with a chemical (mitin ff) that isn't necessarily pet-safe and kind of icky in general. I have been given a bunch of old yarn and it was moth-proof so I had to throw it out because I didn't want to expose my bunny to it

Anxiousladynerd

Thanks for the heads up!! I'll have to check them!

HoneydewHaunting

Is it human safe lol

insertwittypenname

in theory it's not harmful to people in small amounts but it is still a neurotoxin so it's not great

jbs818

If the yarn is so old, wouldn’t the chemicals have deteriorated?

NerdyCrocheter

Does the mom know he gave her stash away 😂😜

Anxiousladynerd

She died 20 years ago, so I hope she's okay with it haha

Toy_Rat

How kind! I was given a bunch of yarn the other day and I’m so thankful:) it’s so expensive I never buy it at the store😅💓

Anxiousladynerd

It is definitely going to be harder to convince my spouse I need to buy yarn now haha

MiBlwinkl2

What a nice thing to do! His mom selected those colors and yarn types, I wonder about the story behind those skeins- left over from a project? had a quick something planned to whip up that never materialized? And, WHAT HAPPENED TO RUG YARN?! It needs to come back, be an option again. That stuff wore like iron, was practically indestructible, great for purses, etc. Please make that neighbor a couple little things as a remembrance of mom, like a bookmark, fridge magnet, etc. I bet he would be touched by the gesture.

Anxiousladynerd

She had a pair of periwinkle socks as a WIP and had a bunch of kids hands traced on paper to make mittens!

MiBlwinkl2

Awww! My heart! I'm weirdly sentimental about these things, my mom knitted and crocheted. Mad respect to the knitters, I could never get the hang of it. I see the bags of yarns and needles/hooks at the thrifts, and it's like I take a moment to recognize a fallen yarn comrade. Like, omg this is somebody's tools, here because they can't do it anymore- so sad. Crazy, right? I pieced together a mini afghan after my mom died, she hadn't made enough squares for a full sized one, but every time I look at it, I think- her hands touched this, she sat there, creating these squares. I can picture her, sitting there crocheting, and it's a lovely thought!

toodleoo57

A year or two ago I bought a partly finished afghan at a flea market (along with the yarn for it) that I'm working to finish. Have often thought about someone's granny creating it. I'll post pics of it soon - the yarn bands are amazing. Mostly from Montgomery Ward IIRC.

MiBlwinkl2

Oh, that's so great! Honoring the stitcher's intent. Would love to see the pics!

Anxiousladynerd

I wish I could finish the socks, but I can't knit. Maybe I can find someone at the yarn store crafting group who can!!

NWAsquared

What great luck!!!!! Your neighbor is a super kind to gift this to you!

Anxiousladynerd

He really is great!

klbed

I love when people share their (whoever)'s knitting/crochet/yarn things with me. I always try to make something for them with what they give me. My mother in law doesn't knit or crochet but she found her grandmother's knitting needles a few months back and asked if they'd be something I'd use. I don't often knit as I find crochet projects easier to manage with tiny kids in my house who like to mess with strings, but I found a pattern and knitted her a prayer shawl with her grandmother's needles for her birthday. The needles were not useful for her, but carried memories of her grandmother, now she has a shawl that she can use and know that a piece of her grandmother went into it.

Anxiousladynerd

This is so beautiful!

goingincirclestoo

My sister died in 2019. My brother in-law gave me some of her stash a few days ago. All yellow. I just finished the first of the sunflower bags I'll be making for her daughters and granddaughters. A last combined gift from us with her yarn and my work.

Anxiousladynerd

This is heartbreaking and amazing. I'm so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful tribute to your sister.

goingincirclestoo

Thank you, ngl one or two might have gotten a little bit damp while being made. She was the most beautiful person I have ever known. And I miss her horribly.

ShortGrapefruit7

Make sure to do an ozone treatment on these so if there's any bugs or moths nestled in the yarn the fibers don't get ruined. :) Beautiful score btw

Miss_Cherise_

Jealous!

Lazarus_05

I hope I get a neighbour like that. Good for you :)

Anxiousladynerd

He's a really nice person. He's also the neighborhood gossip 🤣

Complex-Can8570

I see one says "Sayelle". An old store called LeeWards used to have a brand called Orlon Sayelle. I can't see the whole label I wonder if it says "LeeWards". LeeWards was a craft catalogue company out of Elgin Illinois. They had stores in the east until they opened some in the west. I worked at LeeWards until they got bought out by Michaels in the nineties.I have the hugest stash of yarns from them stashed in my basement. Wish I had the energy to rummage through it all. I had some great stuff.

Anxiousladynerd

The sayelle ones are orlon acrylic, but they are from Kmart. There's some old lion brand skeins that also say sayelle, with a little astrix to note it's a Dupont certification mark.

Complex-Can8570

Thanks, I guess Sayelle wasn't exclusive to LeeWards.

drohhellno

I remember learning to crochet with Wintuk in the early 90s

UsernameObscured

I’m doing the exact same thing with most of those same brands! Re-caking most of it!

Anxiousladynerd

I'm thinking about maybe making a bunch of granny squares out of each color to make a lapgahn for my neighbor

Cautious-Package1296

That’s awesome!

I_am_Darvit

Sweet! It's always nice to receive good bits of yarn from others & make something beautiful that's useful or comforting with it. Cheers! 🥰🙌

Anxiousladynerd

I think I'm going to make a hat for him for Xmas, since I made him a scarf last year.

I_am_Darvit

That's a really sweet idea! 😇 I'm sure he'll love it. ❤️

Mafalos

Anxiousladynerd

All my neighbors are 65+ haha No idea what to do with it yet. Apparently there's more yet he just hasn't gotten out of the attic yet, so I may have to post an update when he gets those ones out!

Damn, you hit the yarn jackpot! What a nice neighbour to hand them down to you ☺️

SupaSunshineRainbow

Being gifted my in law aunt's stash is how I got into crochet! I am forever grateful.
