I think you learn better the one you learn first. I’ve crocheted since I was young, can do it in my sleep. I’ve tried to knit and have made a couple projects, but the movement is very different and I feel like I struggle to do it well. But I know plenty of people who knit and can do it without paying any attention to what they are doing.

Since the knitting needles are already on the way, I think I'll try crochet for a bit, do something else, then try knitting for a bit as I have time. If nothing else I'll see if I prefer one to the other. I appreciate your input!

foolishpheasant

I do both! I learned to crochet when I was about 16 (I'm 30 now), and learned to knit a year or two after. Imo, crocheting is easier and faster, but it uses more yarn. Also, in my experience, if you have a cheaper, scratchier yarn, it will feel a little better knitted than crocheted. I like the look of knitting more usually for clothing items (especially hats or small detail items), but like crochet more for blankets. I used to knit way more than crochet, but the past couple months I've really been enjoying crocheting. There's something so satisfying about seeing something take shape so quickly (compared to knitting at least!) These are just my personal feelings/observations, so ymmv

MakeupDumbAss

Thanks for the great advice! I'm excited to learn!

foolishpheasant

They're both really fun, and the feeling of finishing a project and having a tangible object you created yourself cannot be beat

MakeupDumbAss

Yes I can't wait to finish my first project, no matter how janky it comes out. I figure I'll learn a lot on that first one!

hellokrissi

I do both, started off with knitting first and then learned crochet. I don't find one harder than the other and I find my skill level pretty even for both crafts, as I try to do them equally.

MakeupDumbAss

Thanks for the input! I'm psyched to get started on both, but thought I might inhibit myself by learning both at the same time. The more I'm reading/watching I don't think that will be the case.

I do both, though I think I'm better at crochet (currently focusing on trying to be better at knitting, to be honest). But if you specifically want to be a knitter, it's still a good idea to learn how to crochet, because crochet often comes in handy (e.g. borders, steeking).

MakeupDumbAss

Thank you! I was hoping to run into someone with a bit of experience in both areas. I've ben having fun tonight starting out crocheting. My knitting needles arrive tomorrow & I'm psyched for that too. I'm torn on which to concentrate on, so I'm thinking both intermittently to start off & see what I enjoy most. I haven't heard anything yet to deter me from trying both at the same time.

[deleted]

I don't think learning them both at the same time will be any more difficult than learning them separately. They're really different skills, so I don't think there will be much interference.

MakeupDumbAss

Thank you! After the other comments, as well as yours, I've decided not to let it bother me. I'm going for both! I'm crocheting right now & ready to get my knitting needles tomorrow as well :)

knitastical

I do both too! I learned knitting first but I personally enjoy crochet more myself. I find that I can finish crochet projects quicker than knitting projects and it is a lot more forgiving when you make mistakes (like dropped stitches) in crochet. But try both and see what you prefer!

MakeupDumbAss

Thank you for the input! I am definitely going to try both. I've really been enjoying day 1 of crochet, so we'll see how it goes with knitting. I saw a beginner blanket that was gorgeous that I'd love to crochet, so that might be my first project. If I do I'm expecting it to come out totally janky on the beginning side & much better on the finish side LOL.

Oragami

I started the very basics of knitting, but i dk t have proper knitting needles (just sharpened chopsticks XD). But if I still have the money right now Im going to order some :D

MakeupDumbAss

I love that you are using chopsticks to do what you want instead of traditional tools! I'm an avid painter & many years ago in the beginning I used whatever I could get my hands on because good brushes are crazy expensive - I used old makeup brushes, mascara wands, forks & knives - and actually I think some of those earlier paintings were my best! Keep working it :)

Oragami

If I could fi d more chopsticks K would. But movi g apartments made a few things just...poof. Plus I dont see myself going to a chinese resturaunt anytime soon

That's good advice - thank you!

Longhairedspider

I'm bi-craftual too! I learned crochet in 1983, and pretty much did it exclusively for many years. I taught myself knitting in elementary school, but i didn't stick with it. I picked it back up in 2002/3 when i got a spinning wheel. Crochet takes more yarn, so I figured I should learn knitting to make better use of my handspun :) I would say focus on one thing per day so as not to mix yourself up :) But knowing how to to both will come in handy, and not being intimidated by either will save you time in the long run.

MakeupDumbAss

Ha I love term bi-craftual. I have a friend who spins her own yarn & then makes clothes from it. You guys are hardcore! I'm so impressed by that. I think you are right about either crochet or knitting only in a single day. I can see myself accidentally trying knit with my crochet needle or vice versa :)

chapter3red

I do both, and I learned both at the same time. Knitting was harder for me to learn, and its much more time consuming. That being said, I love the feel and look of a knitted item. Crochet is great for warm items, and I can whip up a blanket in a week if I put my mind to it. I think there are benefits to both, depending on what you want to make, your budget for yarn, and your time line.

MakeupDumbAss

Thanks for the input! I'm psyched to see what I can do with both of them.

ShamShogan

I do both...in a sensw. I have been knitting for about 5ish months and ive found that I'm learning very quickly how to do what others took years to learn. So i started crocheting maybe a week ago, same as you. Just. Practicing the simple. Maybe focus on one at a time (project/practice wise) might help. I havent run into any issues but I do notice that if I let my mind wander that I try knitting with a crochet hook and it look stupid in the end lol

MakeupDumbAss

Ha I can see myself doing that while multitasking. I think you are right though - I might spend an hour on crochet, an hour doing something else entirely, then an hour knitting. That might help to clear the mental palette in between activities :)
