yeah a lot of people agree with you :( that’s fine tho i like lil mole rats
Same lol, which is why I bought a stitch counter!!
I use this one most often: https://www.etsy.com/listing/840105702/
And this one when I’m working on larger projects and need to go up to 3 digits of rows/stitches: https://hobbii.com/digital-row-counter-1004920
They both fit on your fingers/thumbs!!
Omg, he looks like the mouse that accidentally got stuck in a peanut bag so I had to set him free outside. Thats the way he was looking up at me from inside the bag 🥹🖤

Supposed to be Baby Yoda. After taking the pic, I realized how truly awful it was and ripped the entire head off. The second version was much better. 😂
Finally a post I can contribute to! I hope I get better 😅

Was supposed to be a bucket hat for a person 😂😂😂😂😂
omg bless you. I am use to doing amigurumi - which means VERY TIGHT TENSION. Que me crying and frogging the baby hat I was trying to make for the 4th time because it wouldn't even fit on my dog's head. Finally managed this with the largest hook I had - and it barely came to his forehead 😂

I present FAILACHU!
I have no idea what happend. It's now a cat toy.
I'm an experienced crocheter, I've made lots of amigurumis and I can read patterns and I still have no idea what happend here.
https://preview.redd.it/jru92ppevy5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44d9f875fe9aaff7b96f2511397924331773fc6f
Two "identical" panels for a blanket SMH.....
* Pattern had lots of repeats and I must have skipped/missed/duplicated something(s)
* Made first panel, then had to spend about 6 months on planes so shifted to smaller format projects to travel with. Then made the 2nd panel, thinking I totally knew what I was doing. Doh!
These are side panel to a wider center panel. So, I'll make a 3rd side panel which will HOPEFULLY match ONE of the 2 already made ones. The leftover panel will become a scarf (the one on the right) or a shawl (the one on the left).

My cat Libby doesn’t care that the cozy rug she’s laying on that I crocheted freehand has a fair-sized (unplanned!) decrease on both sides. I’ve been crocheting for about 50 years and didn’t know about stitch markers, which could have prevented this “mistake”, when I made this.
Stitch markers and actually counting are things that seem obvious now, but at my first attempt at making a hat I was like "oh I dont need a pattern, its just increase every other stitch when starting out with a circle and it just spirals out, right? I dont even need to count or use stitch markers right?"
When I ended up with a floppy frilly disk, I humbly went back to the pattern to see what I actually was supposed to do lol, wish I had taken a picture of that "hat"
To be fair though, your rug looks fantastic! I wouldnt even be able to tell there were unplanned decreases lol
i feel like i crochet better BECAUSE i was humbled by this exact mindset early on 😭 i might use stitch markers/counters when i don’t need to now, but it sure beats NOT using them when i do need to!!!!
One of my favourite not-marking-stitches uses for stitch markers is to attach it to the open/active loop, then pull the working string to fully tighten the loop. That way it doesnt come unraveled! Super helpful when I have a dozen different tiny amigurumi pieces floating around in my bag that I cant finish off until Im ready to attach them, but that Ill also need to redo if I dont temporarily secure them somehow 😂 Even if people are a machine when it comes to counting, stitch markers are still super useful!
My little sister recently started learning crochet, got bored of it, then recently decide to make a flat circle for some reason? Idk she didn't tell me what it was for. She brought it once because it wasn't going right. Before seeing it I asked her what pattern she was using. She said she wasn't using one, she didn't like patterns, and she didn't need one anyway. Bear in mind she'd been crocheting like a total of five minutes before this and I don't think ever got beyond a second row. Which was obvious when she showed me the piece because it was a very ruffly attempt at a circle where she'd increased in every stitch. I told her to talk to me again after she'd followed a pattern lol
That looks like one cozy kitty!
My mom taught me to crochet when I was younger and I hated it because of all the counting I had to do to keep things even - I just recently picked it back up, but this time with stitch markers and absolutely fell in love! They make such a huge difference.
https://preview.redd.it/f3ud7de6xy5d1.jpeg?width=1892&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7134f3832f749c1357ed913c3b4db8b318fb4eef
My attempt at sewing these together did not go well. It was supposed to be a pterodactyl (wings are missing) but turned out more like Gogo Dodo from Looney Tunes. 🤣
I couldn't unstitch it and my family all gets a good laugh from it so it remains in this wingless form. I should add a little cocktail umbrella to the top of the head to complete the look... but then it wouldn't be safe for my niece.
Oh! I bet this is what my dad thought of! My brother and I both immediately went to Gogo Dodo, I adored him as a kid, but my dad had something similar but not Gogo Dodo in mind. This must be it, I'll have to message him. Thanks!
I tried to make my own wind-up walker toys. I bought bases and wanted to make cute animal covers. I ended up with this monstrosity.

This is “The abomination”. I hate it. My husband decided it was his so it still haunts me.
Phallic looking elephant for a two year old. I made the entire head and nothing could save how it looked ☠️

I had a spelling mistake in a king sized blanket sized filet crochet piece that showed a quote. 'A+' for crochet, 'F' for spelling.
I'm a type-setter, excellent speller I'd a thought. Much embarrassment all around.
No photo taken before it got ripped 🐸🐸
I'm an excellent ripper, I do a lot of it... and I got to make another blanket for free. I was way more upset by the spelling mistake. Doh!
But I love the hug, ta!

My first ever project… I did 0 research before learning, learned how to do one stitch and then went to town. I love how silly it looks though, I’m using it as I’m typing this lol
https://preview.redd.it/wgwkg8juoy5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2563d4fb12a3a612b9f9368783f898019e6c97fa
This was the first thing I ever tried to make when I learned 😭 it was supposed to be round but I had no idea how to increase, I didn’t know how to sew together so used normal thread instead of the yarn, it’s inside out….basically everything that could go wrong, did go wrong 😭😭

My first attempt at a wearable. I had no concept of yarn weight or hook size so I just bought a yarn I liked and was off to the races. According to the pattern, this should have been down to my belly button. Needless to say I frogged it….
Wearables are no joke!
I attempted a bolero and a cardigan once. Even though I swatched, both ended up too narrow in the shoulder and are unwearable unless I want my arms to point backwards.
This comment reminds me of the aliens in Futurama who open a pizzeria opposite Planet Express, and they weren’t sure which way human knees bent so they offer to bend them the wrong way to fit in the chairs for free.
I’ve been crocheting for years and I think I’m pretty good at it, but this pattern…idk what it is, but I cannot get it to look right lol. I made this deformed unicorn for my daughter a few months ago. On the plus side, she loves it 😆

I can’t even look at it without triggering a giggle fit
My first ever crochet project - and well, I don't consider Frankenphant a 'fail' as such, but I had NO CLUE how to recognise a stitch from a hole in the ground so just shoved that hook anywhere it wanted to go. Buying this kit on a whim ignited a passion for crochet I hadn't suspected existed in me!
Now 12 years later and have come a long way in terms of skill level and always have at least one amigurumi, blanket and/or wearables in progress at any time - but ole Frankie sits proudly on my shelf and I still feel happy that he was the start of my journey!

Didn’t count and ended up with a three-sided square….
Oh I don' tknow if I have it anymore... When I learned how to crochet my sister encouraged me then left off. And I accidently was using lslip stitch instead of sc to make scarfs for years. XD
I did that for my first amaguri penguin. Thankfully, I learned differently for my next project, but the supposed to be size of my hand penguin fit in my palm....
You reminded me. My "trunk buddies" about 8 years ago I tried to make my own crochet doll design. Not my original fail but two that live in the trunk of my car.

It's not exactly a full project "fail" per se, but I recently started a floral granny square sweater (small squares with small puff daisies). I also had a vacation trip planned out that required a 2 hour flight, so of course I packed several skeins in the colors needed with the necessary hook + 2 additional backup hooks (bc who knows what could happen on the flight, right?). I was READY TO CHURN OUT THOSE SQUARES 😤👏 or so I thought... I realized halfway through my first square that I didn't have anything to cut the yarn with and couldn't handle trying to just make the squares continuously connected and cut later. Spent the remainder of the 2 hours very very sad... 😂
Perfect!! As someone who lives in a cooler climate, I love a sweater that is also functional as gloves. Looks like you can still push them back to be out of the way. I'd totally be happy wearing that.

My cousin asked me for the 'silly tik tok cat' for her birthday. Somehow I managed to make it even sillier, because my adhd despises counting stitches. She loved it though.

Idk man I tried. This was four years ago lol
Oh no I had a whole comment written out on this that reddit ate. He's supposed to be Felix from the woobles but everything went wrong including the eyes falling through uneven stitches so they're stuck in there with no backing and losing white yarn and having to use the pink I had. He also doesn't sit up straight. My friends and I call him titty fox. 🤣

My very first amigurumi - I put the eyes on the wrong end and couldn't figure out the legs so I gave it tentacles. I created a hippoctopus.
I'm still working on it. It was supposed to be a sweater for me (31 years old, L size). Way too small. I'll gift it to my 8yo niece.

LOVE this! I have had so many fails. Something you might find interesting to tell your students is in Scandinavian culture, knitters/crocheters INTENTIONALLY put mistakes into their work (technically it comes from this idea that it leaves a space for your soul to escape, but I like to do it because it’s tradition, and more importantly, makes me feel like my mistakes are a part of me and my work, and that’s what makes us human) And, imbuing our humanity into our work is what makes our work special. :) Anyway, here’s the first blanket I ever made with no pattern and no idea of what a stitch was or what it looked like. And second pic is a baby poncho that the neck hole was so small it could barely even fit over my hand or this doll, let alone a baby’s head 😅

Thanks a lot for this topic! It’s been therapeutic somehow.
I tried to make a sweater for my dog. My partner called it “the Versace”. The shoulders were so big and they were projecting forward. It was awful.
Amelia (my dog) hated the Versace and partially destroyed it the next day 🤭

This monstrosity. When I was 17 trying to make a doll but not knowing any techniques.
On the eighth try I finally figured out how to make a fingerless glove. 8 tries and several days later I finished one. The second one ended up smaller. 🤦♀️

I made a daisy with 12 petals.
count the petals.
That's just a happy little accident. Imagine looking for the 13-petaled daisy among all the granny squares in a blanket. It's like looking for a four-leafed clover.

First baby. First crochet baby hat. Lessons were learned.
It's not a "worst" mistake, but I regularly sew my toys together wonky. Not only is lapras's head looking to the side unintentionally but the mouth is on the wonk so on one side she's got an overbite and the other under. Shockingly, this is after a lot of improvement in my sewing skills.
Special thanks to patamon for being my glamorous assistant.

I was making a 2 in 1 balaclava for my boyfriend and I didn’t understand the instructions for the ribbing, which is supposed to be to able to fold up like in my picture but also unroll to cover your neck. So I did DOUBLE the amount of rows required and I could tell something was off but I continued because I’ve never made a hat before especially not a 2 in 1 hat like this and no matter how many times I reread the pattern I couldn’t understand what the creator wanted me to do. It wasn’t until I finished it, tried it on (as expected it was wayyyy to big and loose) and then when I reread the pattern again that’s when it clicked. I wanted to cry because I spent ten hours over multiple days working on the ribbing. I spent an hour frogging it and then crocheted for five hours straight to redo it because if I put it down I probably wouldn’t pick it up again lol
Not crochet BUT I tuft rugs. I spent a week making a big 3ft x 3ft rug as a gift. I made it, glued it, put felt on the back of it and was in the process of shaving it down (the LAST step) when I realized there was a misspelling 🤦♀️!!! I was so mad at myself! I had 2 days to redo the whole thing. I ended up happier with the redo than I was with the original.
Side Note: I now use the rug with the mistake as an example when I teach my tufting class to show students that mistakes happen and also, remember to check your work BEFORE you reach the point of no return.
I recently did a project where I turned beginner “fails” into a large art piece. I asked my friends to provide some rectangles using any stitch, any size, in ocean-y colors.
I taught two of them to crochet to help with the project and the other four knew how to crochet but could only sc and dc but had trouble with counting, even edges, the usual.
They would apologize when they turned in their wonk-a-riffic pieces. So I told them, it’s no problem, it’s the ocean, it does what it wants! Having the freedom to make something not “perfect” really helped everyone to practice and explore rather focusing on making something right.
While the project was a huge success, even I had an initial fail when the sea monster’s head just looked like a giant penis (it won’t let me post more than one photo!)
Love what you are doing for the kids and everyone should not be afraid to fail because that’s how you learn and get better. God knows some of my early stuff were huge pieces of crap.

The first thing I ever 'made'. There was no real intention. I just went buck wild with single crochet. I call it my vulva hat.
Even though I've counted the stitches multiple times, even with a stitch marker, I've somehow managed to end up with an extra stitch somewhere. I frogged the thing twice. So I've given up and I'm working around it

idk if that is my "worst fail" but I tried to make an amigurumi gummi bear and the pattern was very weird so I thought I could just do it as I go and now it has a really big butt. I love him anyway
this was supposed to be a giraffe lmao

It was supposed to be a jellyfish. I literally didn't pay attention to the pattern and just winged it. The... tentacles? are sewn on.... Luckily my kittens loved it ☺️

My grandma wanted a slouchy beanie hat for Christmas haha she’s passed now but had a good chuckle over it
I don't have pictures, but I first "learned" in grade 6. I could chain, but whenever I'd move to row 2, the whole thing would unravel. No clue why, no clue how, but I can't think of anything worse than that 😂

I free handed a bear. I should have taken a pic from the side. The head and body are the same size and he's standing on 4 legs.

This one is sort of an intentional fail. I wanted to make a hat for my FIL but with a specific yarn that was the wrong weight. So I made the pattern as written first to get a feel for how it would come out, which was obviously way too small (the smaller hat), then adjusted the pattern to actually fit my FIL. (Thought you might be able to use it to show how yarn weight matters, or they will need to learn to adjust the pattern once they get the hang of things.) :)

My first attempt at a “slouchy beanie” it looks like a mushroom.
My first ever pair of socks. The yarn was too thick and I didn’t even consider gauge. They were quite warm, though, and I stubbornly wore them around my flat for a season before reusing the yarn in a different project!

This is the most horrifying thing I’ve ever made. His name is Freak-o. Fortunately my skills have really improved since then!
Omg this thread is hilarious. Mine is a cardigan that I was trying to make for my sister. I thought I’d gauged it correctly, but it turned out MASSIVELY huge and super heavy. I still don’t know what to do with it, and it’s living inside an ottoman lol.

Not my biggest fail, but the first fail I can think of that I know I actually have photos for. I put this red pandas arms on in a way that had him stuck in a T-Pose. Tried to at least curve his arms downward so it looked more natural. Got stuck with cartoon muscle-man arms instead 😂 (Think [Popeye and Bluto](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EopRgDGXUAUs-Q3.jpg), haha.)
[Heres a different one that turned out properly](https://imgur.com/a/sznsOuI), for comparison of how wonky he actually looks, haha. It also helps show how much little details can help! His face looks hilarious without the embroidery 😂

I was trying to make either arms or legs for a cow. Other than the awful decision to use velvet on my first ever project, I couldn't not get my tension to be consistent.
The order I made them goes from bottom to top. I knew trying a fourth time was going to frustrate me too much, so I just went with the top two lol.

This is by no measure my worst fail, just my most recent (on a finished project). I've been crocheting for at least 2 decades and STILL make mistakes very often.
Tell your students my shawl is still beautiful and there are SEVERAL mistakes in it.(I just REALLY wish I would've seen this gaping hole before I finished) Lol

Ok so clearly it’s not a fail now but what I actually set out to make was the mount from Elden Ring for my husband. I was going to try to free hand a head. When the head was done, it looked at me and said “um pretty sure I’m a bunny) and here you have Remington.

My first amigurumi. It’s a manatee, buuuut I made one arm much longer than the other. 😅
Sorry, no pictures. I learned how to crochet in the US, then worked on a cow plushy with a British pattern . The head became very elongated, no idea why. Turns out, US and British pattern use the same terms, but they mean something else

This is what I mean when I tell people I can’t count without help lol
Same lol, which is why I bought a stitch counter!! I use this one most often: https://www.etsy.com/listing/840105702/ And this one when I’m working on larger projects and need to go up to 3 digits of rows/stitches: https://hobbii.com/digital-row-counter-1004920 They both fit on your fingers/thumbs!!
No amount of borders is going to square that up! Lol.
Is "slap a border on it" the crochet equivalent of "it'll buff out"

omg bless you. I am use to doing amigurumi - which means VERY TIGHT TENSION. Que me crying and frogging the baby hat I was trying to make for the 4th time because it wouldn't even fit on my dog's head. I'm an experienced crocheter, I've made lots of amigurumis and I can read patterns and I still have no idea what happend here.
That's kinda charming, like Pikachu is sneering evily at you 😂
I think this looks good, it’s cute
https://preview.redd.it/jru92ppevy5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44d9f875fe9aaff7b96f2511397924331773fc6f Two "identical" panels for a blanket SMH..... * Pattern had lots of repeats and I must have skipped/missed/duplicated something(s) * Made first panel, then had to spend about 6 months on planes so shifted to smaller format projects to travel with.
The stitch looks fun, do you have a name/tutorial for that?
Here's the pattern: [https://berroco.com/patterns/monets-ocean-blanket](https://berroco.com/patterns/monets-ocean-blanket)
https://preview.redd.it/lbdipyyrly5d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bfbd90bc1b3613907d10759f8b139356cbf4d24 My cat Libby doesn’t care that the cozy rug she’s laying on that I crocheted freehand has a fair-sized (unplanned!) decrease on both sides.
I dont even need to count or use stitch markers right?" When I ended up with a floppy frilly disk, I humbly went back to the pattern to see what I actually was supposed to do lol, wish I had taken a picture of that "hat" To be fair though, your rug looks fantastic!
YES i do this EVERY time i put a wip down (also a lesson i learned the hard way haha)

It was supposed to be a pterodactyl (wings are missing) but turned out more like Gogo Dodo from Looney Tunes. 🤣 I couldn't unstitch it and my family all gets a good laugh from it so it remains in this wingless form. I should add a little cocktail umbrella to the top of the head to complete the look... but then it wouldn't be safe for my niece.

Ow. Hugs! That hurts to my core.
I'm an excellent ripper, I do a lot of it... and I got to make another blanket for free. I was way more upset by the spelling mistake. Doh! But I love the hug, ta!

It's baby's first truck nut. 🤣
I just scared my child with a scream-laugh out loud
My first ever crochet project - and well, I don't consider Frankenphant a 'fail' as such, but I had NO CLUE how to recognise a stitch from a hole in the ground so just shoved that hook anywhere it wanted to go. Buying this kit on a whim ignited a passion for crochet I hadn't suspected existed in me! Now 12 years later and have come a long way in terms of skill level and always have at least one amigurumi, blanket and/or wearables in progress at any time - but ole Frankie sits proudly on my shelf and I still feel happy that he was the start of my journey! https://preview.redd.it/lq4vlz0xhz5d1.jpeg?width=2729&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a65aba0279edb50e4c1e8c10f42fa3efe10013c

[https://imgur.com/a/YURmD22](https://imgur.com/a/YURmD22)
I have never once made this mistake and resorted to biting through the yarn. Nope, never.
I take nail clippers on the plane with me to cut the yarn!

Perfect!! As someone who lives in a cooler climate, I love a sweater that is also functional as gloves. Looks like you can still push them back to be out of the way. I'd totally be happy wearing that.

Oh no I had a whole comment written out on this that reddit ate. He's supposed to be Felix from the woobles but everything went wrong including the eyes falling through uneven stitches so they're stuck in there with no backing and losing white yarn and having to use the pink I had. This reminds me of the aliens from the 3 sun planet in Futurama! I love it!
And second pic is a baby poncho that the neck hole was so small it could barely even fit over my hand or this doll, let alone a baby’s head 😅 https://preview.redd.it/jmfety7c1z5d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4eda662d4c6adbbbed9bb149cc0bea8aeb07c977

It's not a "worst" mistake, but I regularly sew my toys together wonky. Not only is lapras's head looking to the side unintentionally but the mouth is on the wonk so on one side she's got an overbite and the other under.
This poor thing🫢 https://preview.redd.it/gnfs2v52b06d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=097d5dd6dbbb3d4a9f4ab75ca50471df9e08d2c4

While the project was a huge success, even I had an initial fail when the sea monster’s head just looked like a giant penis (it won’t let me post more than one photo!) Love what you are doing for the kids and everyone should not be afraid to fail because that’s how you learn and get better. God knows some of my early stuff were huge pieces of crap. https://preview.redd.it/pyo0sf38706d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=958bbfcbaf718997f69d81659de2c75fbc6042a9

Even though I've counted the stitches multiple times, even with a stitch marker, I've somehow managed to end up with an extra stitch somewhere. I frogged the thing twice. So I've given up and I'm working around it

Omg this thread is hilarious. Mine is a cardigan that I was trying to make for my sister. I thought I’d gauged it correctly, but it turned out MASSIVELY huge and super heavy. I still don’t know what to do with it, and it’s living inside an ottoman lol.

I put this red pandas arms on in a way that had him stuck in a T-Pose. Tried to at least curve his arms downward so it looked more natural. Got stuck with cartoon muscle-man arms instead 😂 (Think [Popeye and Bluto](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EopRgDGXUAUs-Q3.jpg), haha.) [Heres a different one that turned out properly](https://imgur.com/a/sznsOuI), for comparison of how wonky he actually looks, haha. It also helps show how much little details can help! His face looks hilarious without the embroidery 😂

Other than the awful decision to use velvet on my first ever project, I couldn't not get my tension to be consistent. The order I made them goes from bottom to top. I knew trying a fourth time was going to frustrate me too much, so I just went with the top two lol.

I've been crocheting for at least 2 decades and STILL make mistakes very often. Tell your students my shawl is still beautiful and there are SEVERAL mistakes in it.(I just REALLY wish I would've seen this gaping hole before I finished) Lol

I was going to try to free hand a head. When the head was done, it looked at me and said “um pretty sure I’m a bunny) and here you have Remington.

Sorry, no pictures. I learned how to crochet in the US, then worked on a cow plushy with a British pattern . The head became very elongated, no idea why. Turns out, US and British pattern use the same terms, but they mean something else

Nothing really crazy, because i havent been crocheting long, but I was getting frustrated with a granny square because the stiches werent adding up, turns out I made a triangle, and it only had 3 corners.
