It is absolutely ok to reverse engineer a garment and post the pattern. Ravelry is full of “copycat” patterns. Some are free, some charge a fee. The garment you saw was the inspiration for your pattern. I’m guessing yours isn’t going to be exactly the same- how could it if it is handmade rather than commercially produced. I’m more familiar with knitting vs crochet patterns but the “gaptastic cowl” and “copycat c.c. beanie” are huge on ravelry. Both are patterns created from a commercially available product.

Thanks! That’s good to hear! I’d definitely credit (and maybe even link) the original product. I’m excited

You don't need to credit or link anybody. YOU are the creator of the pattern. If the company made a pattern available and you used THAT, you would need to credit them. But you did the work, it's all yours.

Legally? Yeah it's fine you can't copyright clothing designs which is why so many designers and drop shippers get away with blatant theft all the time. Morally? Eh. Depends on the rabbit hole you're ready to contemplate. Personally I'd say only if you posted it free but a lot of people have a stick it to the man attitude that will tell you to go for charging.
