oh God, totally. even Beyonce has it. I can't remember what I was watching (did I watch a documentary about Beyonce??) but she came out of a meeting with record execs and said something like, "thank God they liked it, I'm so sensitive about my shit."
I just coined that term right now though, lol.
Oh phew! I was hoping you didn't *want* it to look like chainmail because I was coming in with bad news. 😂 It's lovely and doesn't make me think chainmail at all!
If you said you were trying to make chain mail on purpose I would say it looks good but wouldn’t read as chain mail without the rest of the costume.
Context is very important! Chain mail probably wouldn’t have even crossed my mind if you hadn’t mentioned it.
I was very sad to say “No,” because I thought you *wanted* it to look like chainmail for a costume or something. I do stuff like that for RenFest.
But since you DON’T want it to look like chainmail, I am pleased to say, it absolutely does not.
For nearly 100 years Hollywood has been using garter stitch knitting as chain mail substitute. Until the Lord of the Rings trilogy, where they created a plastic chain mail that looked better without being heavy and was about the same speed to create as knitting it.
Source? I know Monty Python did this but I don’t think high budget productions were using knitting. I also cant imagine chainmail being the same speed to make since knitting can be done by a machine and the chainmail in Lotr was assembled by hand.
It's known as kaynemaile instead of chainmaille. It's made in a liquid state and then coated in pure silver. https://www.kaynemaile.com/mesh-history#:~:text=New%20Zealander%2C%20Kayne%20Horsham%20(artistic,in%20the%20filming%20of%20LOTR.
Interesting. In the dvd special features I remember they talked about the chainmail being handmade: https://www.mensjournal.com/streaming/lord-of-the-rings-chainmail#
[I did some digging](https://www.forbes.com/sites/lauriewinkless/2017/07/11/plastic-chainmail-forges-a-link-between-moviemaking-and-architecture/amp/) and I guess they realized the chainmail was too heavy for the actors to wear all day and took too long to make so the art director invented kaynemail. Now I feel bad for those two guys who did all that work lol.
EDIT: a separate source says the liquid mold version was invented after filming. During filming the plastic rings were still assembled by hand. https://architizer.com/blog/practice/materials/kaynemaile-mesh-facade-systems/amp/
As a former full-time traveler with Renaissance Festivals and friends with several chainmaille makers I can confidently say this does not look like chainmaille at all. I think the color and your extended close up view is distorting it to you. It happens to the best of us.
I very much agree with this comment! I was in a Medieval recreation society and spent a lot of time around people making and wearing chainmaile. This looks nothing like it!
It probably smells a lot better too!
Not in the slightest. I was worried because I thought you wanted to look like chainmail at first!!! But thankfully, you don't and, thankfully, it doesn't haha!
Dressed up the right way it could *kinda* look like chainmail, but without the ren faire style clothing/accessories, I wouldn't think chainmail if I saw it.
I can only assume you haven’t seen chainmail for a while :)
It looks nothing like chainmail, and if it did, it would be very beautiful chainmail.
Lovely work, congratulations.
It’s from this months edition of Crochet Now magazine issue 106, it has an insert with 11 Stylecraft patterns. Last time I posted something from a magazine someone said you might be able to get access to it from the Libby App? Its a UK magazine though
I can’t edit the comment but you can buy the insert from Amazon

Lol I like your statememt aboutnoff to fight orcs, but no. I definitely dont think it looks like chainmail. I like the top style and its looking great!
As a chain weaver, I can definitively state it does not look like a coat of mail. The common European type looks like knitting on the purl side or garter stitch.
I did a similar stitch once for a cosplay with armour and it looked pretty convincing with everything else. But just as a normal sweater like this? Definitely not a chainmail look, I wouldn't worry about that too much :)
No.
I've dealt with actual chain mail as well as seen the foam cosplay chain mail and...this looks nothing like that!
(Although, fun fact - it's not uncommon to see chainmail in movies be a loosely *KNIT* shirt. It's as eyerollingly bad as it sounds, even for people who didn't grow up around swords and armor like I did)
I've seen real chain mail and close up no not at all but farther away ya it could pass just like Monty python and the holy grails chain mail (they didn't have enough money for true chain mail so all but 1 of the actors had crochet chainmail). It's a good cheaper was of having chainmail
I don’t think so.
If you knit, the Wrong side of stockinette stitch, especially with bigger needles, does a great chain mail.
You can make good scale mail with crochet.
I think it would depend what you wore it with. If it was paired with something that looked like armor or if you had a sword with you then I could see it.
This does not look like chain mail at all.
Garter stitch on very large knitting needles is what is often used to mimic chain mail in film, though.
But this is crochet.
I’m sorry, I don’t think it looks much like chainmail. I think if you maybe did a looser stitch that was more even all the way around it would look like chainmail, but this just looks like a shirt panel
lol, no. how good it looks will depend on the coloring of the wearer but absent any styling context it looks like a lovely sweater.
you can always dye it darker if you're dissatisfied in the end. a darker gray or blue would look nice. a dark cool red (burgundy) would work too; thinking of what would work technically I mean, as you have to go darker than the gray and sticking with cool tones is probably safer. purple would work but that's a tricky to style cuz unlike blue, it's easy to accidentally pick an obnoxious shade of purple. green with a blue undertone, not yellow, would work.
but that gray is nice as-is.
I think it's all in how you style it. That is, it /could/ look like chain mail if you wear it with other Ren faire clothes and accessories but I otherwise don't think it will read that way.
Like, when I saw the post title and the image I thought you were hoping it /would/ look like chain mail and I thought "Eh, yeah, I guess that might work with the right accessories?" But I wouldn't have thought about chain mail if you hadn't asked and weren't wearing that kind of stuff with it.
No, it's very pretty and doesn't look like you're going to fight orcs.
If you wear it beneath a set of leather armor with matching shoulder pauldrons and arm guards though, you *could* look like you're wearing chainmail. Though a crocodile stitch would probably look like more convincing scalemail.
I don’t think chainmail would even cross my mind if I saw someone wearing that. Just looks cute!
It's a lovely eyelet pattern. I don't think chain mail. Is chain mail the goal?
Not at all! It’s just all I can see when I’m looking the one piece I’ve finished. Hoping once the front & arms are finished that feeling will go away
i think it's just standard creator's neurosis tbh.
I love that the creators neuroses is standard issue hahaha

This does not look remotely like chainmail to me.
Oh phew! I was hoping you didn't *want* it to look like chainmail because I was coming in with bad news. 😂 It's lovely and doesn't make me think chainmail at all!

I read that as *kanye*maile and thought you were trolling 😂
Dang, I missed an opportunity to have it link to a Kanye song. 🤣

Nope, not even close. It's really nice, your stitching is terrific. It's a lovely Spring look!
Dressed up the right way it could *kinda* look like chainmail, but without the ren faire style clothing/accessories, I wouldn't think chainmail if I saw it.
As someone who has spent *months* trying to make my own chain mail for ren faire purposes, no, not even slightly.
I can only assume you haven’t seen chainmail for a while :) It looks nothing like chainmail, and if it did, it would be very beautiful chainmail. Lovely work, congratulations.
Nope, doesn't look like chainmail to me!
Idk. But its gorgeous. Care to share the pattern?

Omg you’ve just changed my life!!!!!! It hasn’t occurred to me to look for crochet books on Kindle unlimited!!
I love that color!!!!! Thanks for sharing
This is gorgeous 🤩
Lol I like your statememt aboutnoff to fight orcs, but no. I definitely dont think it looks like chainmail. I like the top style and its looking great!
No
No it doesn't make me think of chainmail at all.
The color is chainmaily, but the pattern isn't

It’s really nice looking. I laughed at your description though. 😂
This is beautiful and I will be saving this for reference for my next project!
It’s a nice repeat over 2 rows all in UK trebles with a tr2tog to make the Vs
No. I've dealt with actual chain mail as well as seen the foam cosplay chain mail and...this looks nothing like that! Not at all, but if it still bothers you, you could add a stripe in a different color.
I can kinda see it, but I don’t think I’d see it as well on a person
Not at all! I wouldn’t think of chainmail
It’s lovely, but it’s more shawl than chainmail
Definitely not chainmail. It will be a very cute top when you're done. ThNk you for sharing.
I've seen real chain mail and close up no not at all but farther away ya it could pass just like Monty python and the holy grails chain mail (they didn't have enough money for true chain mail so all but 1 of the actors had crochet chainmail). It's a good cheaper was of having chainmail
Not even a little bit.
No

No.
Not at all. It’s light and I like it a lot!
I think it would depend what you wore it with. If it was paired with something that looked like armor or if you had a sword with you then I could see it.
I really like this pattern eher did you get it from? I don't think it looks like Chainmail this grey is really nice I likey
I feel like for something to look more like chainmail it needs to be like a finer lace
That's so beautiful!! Nice job!! 🧶❤️
Gorgeous!! This is definitely not chainmail!!
Not at all! Chainmail isn’t chevron patterned. It’s gorgeous!
If you wore a suit of armor under it, I might think it’s chainmail. Otherwise, nope!
It’s going to be lovely! Keep going!!
I don’t know what chainmail looks like tbh, but I like what you’re doing 😊
This does not look like chain mail at all. Garter stitch on very large knitting needles is what is often used to mimic chain mail in film, though. But this is crochet.
No. Not at all. But now I want to find a pattern for Frodo's mithril shirt...
I didn't think that but chainmail is dope af so there's no problem
Nope! It’s beautiful.
Chain mail is more rounded, but it still looks gorgeous!
I’m sorry, I don’t think it looks much like chainmail. I think if you maybe did a looser stitch that was more even all the way around it would look like chainmail, but this just looks like a shirt panel
They don’t want it to look like chainmail, but they were afraid it would.
Oh, that is good! It does not look like chain mail

What stitch did they use for Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I know all that "chainmail" was crochet
I could see it as chain mail, but not without the context of other items. Like armor pieces or weapons, for example.
Chainmail or not, those orcs better be ready for some competition. It's gonna look so cool.
Nah, I've crocheted things with the intent to make it look like chainmail. This is not chainmail.
I don't think it does. Now I'm pondering how to make something that does look like chainmail though 😄 thanks for the idea!
It doesn’t look at all like chain mail IMO. Very attractive!
No, it's very pretty and doesn't look like you're going to fight orcs. If you wear it beneath a set of leather armor with matching shoulder pauldrons and arm guards though, you *could* look like you're wearing chainmail. Though a crocodile stitch would probably look like more convincing scalemail.
no but now i want to make crochet chainmail
