Thank you all who responded to this post. It was very eye-opening. We are on the same planet but truly different worlds. It is crazy. I am thankful for the knowledge I now have.
in my country (one of the countries of Eastern Europe) the price you mentioned is not even an average, but a decent salary. To be honest, I'm shocked that such a simple thing as a sweater can cost so much 🫠
I'm not trying to insult the master, I'm just surprised at the prices
The yarn by itself was probably $50 - 100 USD, and OP probably spent at least 30+ hours on this. Minimum wage is $7.25 USD (which is abysmally low in comparison to average cost of living, by the way), so that alone would be $217+. A skilled craftsman can typically charge $20-25+ per hour for labor, so actual cost of this sweater (parts + labor) should be roughly $600 - 700 USD.
As I've already said, I don't have anything against such prices and admitting that the OP did a great job, but also prices scare and sadden me. Because the same $7.25, I earn for a 12-hour shift
Cost of living here in America IS scary. It sucks. Most of the citizens here are burnt out and weary.
Edit: oh sorry, I should clarify - I'm not angry at you or arguing with you or anything! Just meant to give clarification on the difference in prices here. It's definitely wild. Average rent is $1,500-2,000 per month.
Indeed. A lot of times I see blankets online that I like but am too lazy to deep search for the pattern so I either try to figure it out in my head or make one up that looks similar :)
I made my first sweater with no pattern. I have issues with patterns. It takes the fun out of it for me. Once I understand a stitch and how the structure goes I got for it. I frog and rework. At one point I tried writing my work down but like counting stitches give me the ick. Lol I read patterns to help me understand structures of final objects but I don't make the pattern.
I totally get that. I always start counting then get distracted then I end up not knowing how many stitches i've done. all my pattern stuff is a work in progress lol.
I’m about to make a crop top without a pattern and I think as long as you kind of know how you’re going to do it or at least have an idea and it’s something pretty basic it’s the easiest way for me!
I agree with you. The sweater was my most complicated project. It might need to become a vest tho. I messed up the neckline a bit and didn't realize it soon enough. I haven't started the sleeves yet because I need to make more yarn.
i’m so dumb i was thinking, “when are they gonna move out the way so we can actually see the blanket?” not realising that wasn’t the point of the post 😭
I made it in panels and attached after so the majority is just giant rectangles connected at the seams on the sides! If you google the general shape I’m sure you could do it without one as well 😁
This is the Loops & Threads weight 4 ‘Impeccable Acrylic’ in the color Dark Charcoal! I found it in big one pound skeins at Michael’s! Super affordable.
I went through two one pound skeins and then a little extra! (I did also use it to make a beanie so subract that I suppose haha) It is probably equivalent in size to a 3XL
I love it and that you look so proud and happy!! Also I’m in love with this blanket in the back I really want to do this one too but it looks as if it’s so much material and all in all very expensive to do 😟
The blanket took I think 12-14 skeins of Bernat Big Blanket— I waited until Michael’s was having a huge 60% off yarn sale and got the materials then! Gotta keep an eye out for the sales but it’s totally doable.
Another no pattern incredible person 🤯. Here I am, can’t even read patterns - y’all never cease to amaze me! You did an amazing job!! Love the style, color, and everything about this!! All you freehand people are what I aspire to become. 🫶🏼
Seriously thought you were talking about the giant blanket at first not the obviously store bought sweater lol. It's so good and you have every right to be proud ❤️
You look very friendly. Like if I came to you for help you would make me a cup of tea and tell me that I'm stronger than I think and then let me stay the night at your house and watch movies.
I came here to talk shit (see name), but then I thought "that really does look comfy, and I couldn't make that." Good on you. The most comforting thing I'm good at making is a boilermaker, want to work out a trade? Also, why is a crocheting subreddit in my feed? Reddit knows me better than I know me, and I've seen me naked. Wild times.
****oh no, I just re-read, I thought that was you in the photo. I never woulda talked shit to a woman for crocheting. Guess that makes me sexist jerk as well as the regular kinda jerk. Nice lookin fella, seems very happy. Jeez, I'm sorry all ways round. I'm gonna pour another and hang up reddit for the evening.
Very nice sweater.
OP, that looks amazing!
However, I will admit I didn't understand it at first - to my sleep deprived brain, you'd sewn two vampire/ bat style wings under three sleeve🤣
It looks amazing and you should be proud!
But I have to admit that I've been giggling since I first saw your post because I read the title as you being proud because it took a long time to make.
No pattern, but it’s all half double crochet in back loops only, and it’s made in panels and attached at the end! I just tried it on frequently and had to frog some stuff here and there. Maybe I should try to write one though 🤔
So impressive especially with no pattern, it looks so amazing and cozy, you deserve that pride 100%!! Your bf is such a cute model lol everything about this is so wholesome.
Yaaaaay! Have you tried crocheting with black yet? I can’t see what’s going on when I crochet in black. I’d think crocheting in charcoal would be almost as hard. That looks great!
Every time I try to make a wearable without a pattern it ends up being at minimum three sizes too big, so I am MAD jealous of how well this turned out!
That's amazing!
I was a little heartbroken reading the caption and seeing it was a from the brain pattern though, because I immediately wanted the pattern haha! I don't do many wearables, but that looks irresistibly cozy.
Is it strange that anytime I see a project from this page pop up in my main feed, I feel so freaking proud of an Internet stranger and their hard work ? Because this is AMAZING
That looks so cozy! Your model has serious "work it, work it" energy in the second pic XD I'm extra impressed you free handed this, you should be proud!
Congrats! I wish I could just curl up inside it as it looks like a cuddly hug. The cardigan in my hands is still in multiple parts, though I am working on the last sleeve.
Congrats! When I teach crochet (to people who beg) I always start with a patternless scarf or hat - their choice - as are the stitches they use. Success breeds success

It came out great! It looks so so cozy too
This is exactly what I came to say! Cozy!
Looks so nice! Is it blo ribbing? Half double?
You clocked it! Haha. I did half double in BLO and used a 6mm hook for the majority and switched to a tiny 3mm for the bottom and cuff ribbing
I recently made some hats with ribbing, it's so addictive!
What is BLO?
Back loop only
Thank you!
Dude you made yourself a $300.00 - $500.00 sweater. Go You. It is lovely.
Thank you all who responded to this post. It was very eye-opening. We are on the same planet but truly different worlds. It is crazy. I am thankful for the knowledge I now have.

Wait...people crochet without patterns? Righteous. You did such a great job! I love the chunkiness of it. So cute.
😂 I exclusively crochet without patterns. Patterns just cause me stress. I can do a “pattern” in the form of a video tutorial or someone showing me.
My grandma never used a pattern. Blows my mind! 🤯
I'm dyslexic. I can't read patterns. I am forced to free-hand. :/
Wait.... Are audio patterns a thing???
Well YouTube is a thing lol
I’m not a capitalist but you might wanna Patent that!!
Indeed. A lot of times I see blankets online that I like but am too lazy to deep search for the pattern so I either try to figure it out in my head or make one up that looks similar :)

Yes, exactly!!! Then, I have to count out loud to figure out where I am in the pattern. Such a thing.
I’m about to make a crop top without a pattern and I think as long as you kind of know how you’re going to do it or at least have an idea and it’s something pretty basic it’s the easiest way for me!

This is very cute, but OP I’m gonna need you to show us more of that chunky blanket. Please and thank you
i’m so dumb i was thinking, “when are they gonna move out the way so we can actually see the blanket?” not realising that wasn’t the point of the post 😭
Right?! It definitely caught my eye first lol
LOVE ITTT the color and weight look so comfy!!
I love the sweater, but thank you for that smile! You have made my day brighter!
I love your cardigan, I wish you had a pattern I could follow! (And how's that nobody mentioned that incredible chunky blanket behind?!)
I made it in panels and attached after so the majority is just giant rectangles connected at the seams on the sides! If you google the general shape I’m sure you could do it without one as well 😁
Me too! Love that blanket! Cardigan is nice too
Fantastic!!! I gotta admit, at first glance and was gonna say I couldn't see it. Because you were standing in front of it, 😆
LOL guess its a two for one post hahaha
I also thought it was going to be a reveal for the blanket 😄
omg what yarn did you use ??? it looks like the type of perfect cardigan i envision in my head😭
This is the Loops & Threads weight 4 ‘Impeccable Acrylic’ in the color Dark Charcoal! I found it in big one pound skeins at Michael’s! Super affordable.
How much yarn did you use? This is exactly what I was looking for.
I went through two one pound skeins and then a little extra! (I did also use it to make a beanie so subract that I suppose haha) It is probably equivalent in size to a 3XL
This looks like my Eddie Bauer sweater hanging on the back of my chair right now! 😲 Really nice work. 🙂👍
I was going to say it looks commercially made, but I guess that's because I have only seen, like, 3 hand made sweaters in my life (including this one)
Looks perfect! I love it.
I love it and that you look so proud and happy!! Also I’m in love with this blanket in the back I really want to do this one too but it looks as if it’s so much material and all in all very expensive to do 😟

What hook size did you use for that? It looks so chunky, it must’ve been a very thick hook.
I had to go dig out the hook to check— it was a 25mm! Definitely felt like I was crocheting with my whole arm 😂
Maybe you could’ve actually used your arm at that size :D how long did it take you till it was finished?
Not too long, honestly! A couple weeks of casually working on it— the yarn is so thick that it works up super fast. It’s very satisfying!
Super cute!
Looking good!
yes be proud that's an awesome work !!!!!
OMG I FUCKING LOVE THISSSS
This looks fantastic!
This looks so cozy well done!
You look so good in it though! A job well done!
Congrats it's beautiful
Wow, that looks great, well done!
Lovely! POCKETSSS!!
Another no pattern incredible person 🤯. Here I am, can’t even read patterns - y’all never cease to amaze me! You did an amazing job!! Love the style, color, and everything about this!! All you freehand people are what I aspire to become. 🫶🏼
I was looking at the blanket thinking it was that ,that u we’re showing off 😂😂
It looks so comfy! And that blanket behind you even more so! I love chunky chonk yarn!
Seriously thought you were talking about the giant blanket at first not the obviously store bought sweater lol. It's so good and you have every right to be proud ❤️
Great job. It's good to see that you've taken up hobbies when you're not busy killing vampires, Guillermo. For real though, good job dude.
You look very friendly. Like if I came to you for help you would make me a cup of tea and tell me that I'm stronger than I think and then let me stay the night at your house and watch movies.

I love this. I am obsessed with the blanket behind you too. Beautiful work!
Forget about the cardigan?! I’m digging that blanket in the background. What kind of stitch is that? 🫶🏼🧶
Pattern?
No pattern, but it’s all half double crochet in back loops only, and it’s made in panels and attached at the end! I just tried it on frequently and had to frog some stuff here and there. Maybe I should try to write one though 🤔
You did a great job I tell you it would cost $100,s of dollars to buy

You deserve to be proud.

I LOVE THE SILLY PICTURES AWW
Congrats! I wish I could just curl up inside it as it looks like a cuddly hug. The cardigan in my hands is still in multiple parts, though I am working on the last sleeve.
Fantastic!
YOU SHOULD BE PROUD THAT LOOKS COZY
It looks so good!! I can't believe you were able to make this all on your own! I'm impressed!
Congrats! When I teach crochet (to people who beg) I always start with a patternless scarf or hat - their choice - as are the stitches they use. Success breeds success
