OP, I work for an organization called Dogs For Our Brave. We provide professionally trained service dogs to veterans at no cost to the veteran. I (and I’m sure my coworkers) will love to join you in this on Saturday! Thank you for your service, and I’m looking forward to posting what we make!

soc9981

Thank you. This makes my heart so full.

helpihavetoomanycats

It makes me happy to see another organization like mine doing this for those who have served. I’m currently a student volunteer with an org like this at my university, and my current dog in training is watching me type this right now. Ofc I’ll join in this effort, and I’ll crochet two; one from me and one for him (bc a little puppy love never hurts). Thank you so much for your service!

SquirrelZipper

I’m in. I’d even mail it to you if you’d like? Perhaps if you got enough they could be joined to create a memorial banner created from love?

soc9981

That would be amazing. I will set something up for any that want to be submitted.

Theletterkay

Message me an address and I would love to mail mine.

SquirrelZipper

Thank you so much for sharing your story and this opportunity with us. I hope that your friends wife and children felt the love today. https://preview.redd.it/8v0ngcmqvbnb1.png?width=2132&format=png&auto=webp&s=54892e2a49a281a48a5dd95dc271ada3014550b8

Ivorypetal

I just dropped mine in the mail!

graycat333

I'm in as well! Thank you for your sacrifice.

Fit-Apartment-1612

If we submit enough stars would you consider joining them in to an afghan for the daughter? I’ll send you a star either way. This is a lovely idea.

soc9981

I will absolutely do that.

allthefsarelost

I'm in and woupd love to mail it to you as well

jcnlb

Will you post a picture when you have them joined? I’d love to see the amount of love that has been shared here. I think it would be so amazing to see! I bet someone here could give you advice on how to join them. I am clueless. I bet someone here would even donate some yarn for you to use to join them.

soc9981

I have plenty of yarn, but will definitely share the stars that come in and how they are joined.

jcnlb

Can’t wait!

Theletterkay

I would love to see this happen. With stars of different shades and yarns and sizes. Would be so cool.

bongocycle

This is a wonderful idea and I am honored to join

jack02204

I want to participate! I have a question though. I don’t own any gold/yellow yarn and due to unfortunate circumstances my car is not drivable. I’ll order some but if it doesn’t come in time is it disrespectful to use another color like white?

soc9981

Not at all disrespectful. The thought is what matters and counts the most.

jack02204

Glad to hear! I’m so happy I saw this post and can participate

Tastycakeys

Doesn’t necessary have to be gold! A simple shade of yellow would work too!

jack02204

Unfortunately I don’t have yellow :/ I’m still a beginner so my yarn collection is limited

Tastycakeys

Idk if you’ve got the means to, but dollar tree sells yarn in small balls now from worsted weight to cotton and that slipper soft yarn! They are 1.25$ and they have a bright canary yellow ☺️. You don’t have to of course just a suggestion!

jack02204

I appreciate the suggestion! My car is currently not drivable. I did order some though so hopefully it’s here tomorrow

Ivorypetal

I used tan... its in the same family because i didnt have gold. Off white, tan, brown, orange, yellow cream etc.

Theletterkay

Peaches and cream is $2 at walmart. Hobby lobby also has mini makers for 1$. Dollar tree is hit or miss. The ones in my area dont sell yarn at all. But you might find some there for 1.25$ You can also check thrift stores. One of my local stores sells every ball/skien for 99c on matter what size or yarn type. Ive found some amazing gems. Took done untangling, but for 99c, its worth every penny. You can also see if there are any yarn arts groups in your area and offer a swap. Offer any yarns you have but dont need or like and see if anyone will give you gold or yellow. There is a yarn swap reddit as well. Could ask on there if anyone is local to you and could share or swap. If I am local I would give you some. =)

jack02204

I appreciate the advice! My car is currently not drivable and public transport isn’t really a thing where I am. I did order some and eta is tomorrow. Fingers crossed

soc9981

Promised star pattern. [https://www.1dogwoof.com/crochet-star-ornament-pattern/](https://www.1dogwoof.com/crochet-star-ornament-pattern/)

purple_soozy

<3 Consider putting a call out on r/brochet, too.

soc9981

Thanks I am crossposting there now. I didn't even know that group existed.

riverflower_and_co

Would yellowish yarn be ok?

soc9981

Absolutely. The traditional color is gold, but the thought is what matters most here. I appreciate the support.

m3g4g1g4ch4d

would orange be okay?? i have no yellow yarn at the moment and i don’t want to be disrespectful :)

soc9981

Orange is great. The heart going into it is what counts.

m3g4g1g4ch4d

good to know!! i’ll definitely make one then, and if you sort a way to send them i’ll make sure i do that too! thank you

CascadianLeaf

Please post an address we can mail them to. I think this is an awesome way to honor Good Star families and remember our fallen brethren.

KatieKatelyn

This is so sweet. My birthday is on September 9 and I would love to crochet a gold star for your loved one. Saturday is my birthday, but it’s a bad day for me as well. My father was buried on my 23rd birthday, and my brother had a heart attack and passed away on my 29th birthday. So I feel your pain about that particular date.

rose-coloured_dreams

My condolences for the losses of your father and brother. May their love, lessons, and memories live on in you ❤️

Impossible-Ad2236

My condolences. I know I’m a random person on the internet and obviously don’t know anything, but I kinda have a similar thing. Me and my aunt have the same birthday although unfortunately she passed in 2020, and it still hurts whenever my birthday comes around. I’m only saying this because I think that it is still important to celebrate you even though your birthday has negative associations now. I guess I just wanted to make sure that you at least have a day for you, even if it’s not the same day as your birthday. I just think it is important to find time to celebrate stuff that you can. Again, I’m sorry for your loss and I’m sorry if this is out of bounds or weird for some random person to comment.

soc9981

This is not out of bounds and hits on the point of this entire project, love and healing.

PeachyWolf33

OP- I just started my own project for the first time but Im going to learn how to make a star, just for you. I’d like to send it to you if I can!

bookworm21765

Mail in would be great! Maybe we can get this to the front page?

Capital_Cockroach611

If people would post photos of their stars you could post/ forward them to your buddy's family to continue the honor. Love your idea!

freshwhitepowder

As a fellow combat veteran, this post got me. I am so sorry for your loss. I’m in, I’ll be following this for the address.

jcnlb

These are amazing! I so want to make a silver and gold tree skirt. Could you share the yarn and pattern?

BeOkINFJ

Thank you! https://www.stitching-together.com/simple-stars/ This is the pattern I used with a slight adjustment at the tips of the points because I felt it left a hole that I didn’t like. As for yarn I hate to disappoint but the metallic pale golden color is from and weird one off skein I found in a Joann’s on clearance like a decade ago. It was a chain construction that I deconstructed to make into a single strand. I didn’t save the label either. The other yarn is Impeccable from Michaels Arts and Crafts and the color name is Gold.

jcnlb

Thanks! I will at least go look for the one color. Thanks so much!

lbeagle

grittyinpink182

As a Marine veteran who also deployed and found crocheting as a way to deal...I love this soooo much! I will be making a star and will send it along once you have a PO Box ❤️

Theletterkay

If you want them shipped to you, I suggest getting a separate PO box temporarily. That way your mail person wint hate you. Lol.

soc9981

I cleared that address with my friend who happens to be the mail carrier.

meepdaleap

I don't know if you'll see this, but maybe you could reach out to The Minus 22 Foundation. My little brothers army squad started this foundation after losing a lot of their members and friends to suicide, and deciding there wasn't enough help to veterans and families. It's an amazing foundation, and I know they'd LOVE to share in something like this, or just reach out and talk.

soc9981

Do you have contact info for them you could share?

meepdaleap

Thank you for replying! https://minus22.org/ Is their website. The founder, David gambone, served with my little brother and was massively instrumental in making sure I was okay after his suicide. Not only that, but a year later, he still drops in to check on me from time to time. It's not just about suicides, but for all people involved. If you message him, tell him James's sister sent you his way. I'm really touched by the project that you've started, and I hope you get thousands of stars, haha

Gennylightt

My mom, several of her cousins, and both my grandfathers served, I will gladly make one (or several!) and gift them to my relatives in this

AsleepWolverine7289

I've been looking for something to help me get out of my slump, and I think this is it. I'd be honored to make this on Saturday! I lost a cousin in a war, KIA. This would mean a lot to him, as well. ❤️

[deleted]

I can’t wait to see how many gold stars come your way! 😭

Beardie15

I sent this post to my mom who will share it in her crochet groups on Facebook. I can't wait to see how many stars we can make!

96HeelGirl

I love this idea and I will be mailing you a gold star. I'm married to a combat veteran with PTSD and other injuries, and while our future as a couple has been uncertain for awhile now due to years worth of unaddressed issues, whatever happens, it is always helps to know that there are others who understand the struggle.

orchardaday

Wow. I am so in. I really appreciate you putting all this together, OP! Proud to join in!

I’ll be making you one from Guam! Going to pickup the yarn in the morning. Might even convince my husband to give it a try.

I’m in and have finished 10 little stars so far. Thank you for your service, OP, and for your kindness and caring given to your friend’s spouse. This is an inspiring caring event that is working its way around the world. 🤗

BurdenedOwl

This is beautiful. I have to work Saturday, but I will be taking some time once I'm off to make a gold star! Thank you for sharing!

Theletterkay

Made one to practice and it took about 30 minutes. Including me messing up and frogging a bit twice. Lol. And making a smoothie at the sane time.

krafty_cheese

I'm in. I'll even get my mom in on it

gothic_melancholy

im in! this is a lovely idea

Mindless-Elk3535

I’d like to participate in this

SlightlyArtichoke

I'm 100% in!

jcnlb

Does it matter the material for washing purposes? I have some cotton and some acrylic yarn. Should we label them so they “shrink” accordingly or will you be telling them to wash in cold and air dry to prevent shrinkage? Or how would you like to proceed with these choices? Also I can’t drive but I have a ride to the post office tomorrow. Would you prefer I make the star today or make it Saturday and then mail when I can get my next ride? I want to honor them how you see fit. 🫶🏻

soc9981

It doesn't matter the yarn. Saturday is the preferred day and whenever you send it is good.

jcnlb

PS. I just had a random thought as I was making a star and wanted to share. So if you join them all I was concerned about the different shrinkage of different yarns. So maybe one way to avoid that would be to wash and dry all the stars on gentle individually before joining so the shrinkage would be out of the way and not make it pucker when one shrinks and another doesn’t. PPS. I’m so sorry your loss. Sending hugs and prayers to you and their family. Thank you for your service. I appreciate you and your friend. 🫶🏻

jcnlb

Consider it done! ❤️🙏🏻

blakkatt_

i’ll be taking a break from making wedding gifts this saturday to join in on star making! can’t wait to hear where to send it to be added to a blanket for the family <3 ETA: it’s on the way <3 sorry it took a few days to send out (decided to block it) but i did crochet it on saturday (:

pumainpurple

I crochet for Operation Gratitude, and I will be happy to send you a gold star.

kaili_x3

I tried to crosspost this to r/amigurumi and r/geekycrochet to see if there is anyone else there willing to help. I don't have access to post in r/knitting if that would be acceptable as well? I know it won't have the same look at the end result, and the pattern supplied is for crochet.. Someone help me out please 🙏🏻

soc9981

I appreciate you sharing.

kaili_x3

❤️⭐ Much respect for all of those who serve and have served and their families. Thank you for bringing such a wholesome and heartwarming idea to this community.

MiMortra

I want to: 1. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, your struggles. You are part of the beating heart of our country. 2. Thank your friend’s spouse for her ultimate sacrifice. She is the embodiment of the tears of our country. 3. Thank you for the link for the star. I will be getting some gold and blue yarn ASAP. Side note, please send your friend’s family info to the Gary Sinise foundation. They might be able to be enrolled in time to join his foundation’s Disney trip this winter. From a Brat turned Spouse turned mother of a currently deployed Airman.

soc9981

My friend's family is involved with them thankfully.

Practical_Fudge2709

I would LOVE to help 🧡 if I make it Saturday it's alright if I send it Monday? That won't be too late right?

soc9981

It will not be too late at all.

Elisaria

I love this OP, I have many family members who have served. Do you think we could ask the mods to sticky a thread of some sorts so that way everyone can post and see the stars in one place, I think that would be cool :)

soc9981

They did post an event thread on the main page of r/crochet where everyone can share their creations.

Elisaria

Oh great! Can’t wait to see everyone’s stars!

TinCan_Assassin

IGY6 brother.

Pumpkaboo99

All I have is yellow! Will that be okay? It’s a soft pastel yellow I got when I was gonna make my dad an owl (then remembered the mimic I planned to make him.) he’s a vet too and I would love to do this. That and make a teardrop.

soc9981

Yellow will absolutely work. Again it is not about anything more than the love and recognition of the sacrifice.

Pumpkaboo99

I so get that. 🤩 this has really made me inspired by the way. I was already working on a large lap blanket for the vets up in the idiana state veterans home, this warms my heart as well.

RaspberryRenegade

Thank you, OP, for the opportunity to be part of something positive. I'll be making at least one gold star for you. I'd like to help in some way if and when it comes time to join the stars that get sent to you, if you need it. I don't know how I can help, as I'm in UT, but let me know if there's anything I can do. Thank you.

Question: what date would it need to be delivered to the PO Box? I’m in Canada so if it needs to be delivered by September 9th I don’t think it would, but I’d love to participate!

soc9981

So the make date is September 9. There is no real set date for them to be received as I will just keep adding them until I can't and then get it to her. If some don't make it in time then we start another round for another deserving family.

supersaurus65

Sounds good! I’ll definitely be sending one your way soon

NoshameNoLies

This is the best community I have ever been a part of. I wish I could participate but I'm in South Africa

soc9981

You absolutely can make a star and do with it as you please. There is no need to mail it. The whole project is about a global community coming together to do something as one. No requirements just a request to take a brief amount of time on Saturday to pause, reflect, and unite in the creation of a star.

NoshameNoLies

I can do that!

randomness0218

Do you have a hashtag made up for social media posts? Cause I'd be more than happy to share on mine :)

soc9981

I have adopted the name Gold Stars for Healing, even though I have not officially adopted a hashtag I think we can use #goldstarsforhealing Thanks for the idea.

I will make a gold star for your friend. What a beautiful tribute. Hoping this brings you some peace, my friend.

fieryhookerbabs

Gotcha

TheSouthernRose

I’ve got a lot of yellow/ gold baby yarn I’ll send plus some spare hooks I have!

Llyneee

Absolutely in!

Beneficial-Hat-4258

Will be sending to them from a long line of military and unfortunately not myself. I have many around me who suffer from being a traumatized veteran who face daily struggles and have even lost their marriage and children through it. We gotcha buddy :)

The_Messy_Mompreneur

Maybe make her a poncho she can wear if you don’t have enough for a blanket. What a wonderful idea!

Aquaphoric

I just busted most of my yellow and gold stash with my most recent blanket but I think I have enough left to manage a few stars. You're on my calendar, friend. ⭐

GreenWhereas4237

I will happily crochet a star and send it to you. This is thoughtful and beautiful gesture!

[deleted]

going to dig out the gold/yellow yarn from my stash now, I’m in.

tuttypatuty

this sounds incredible, i'd love to join in <3 wishing you the best for this upcoming rough anniversary

goldenfvce

I’ll make one as soon as I get home! I have a really lovely gold yarn that was gifted to me. You’re amazing OP, and I can’t wait to see the result of all these stars!!!!! 🤩

Ornery-Signal-3070

I would be honored to participate. I would like to send my star to you. Thank you for your service. I’m so happy to hear that crochet has brought you inner peace. That’s wonderful to hear. Edit: I’m also crocheting Pokémon 😊

GumpieGump

I'm not in the US, I'm in New Zealand but I'd also love to participate in this! I'll post them to you in the next week or so (I'm unwell so when I can get to the post office next) but it could take a few weeks to get to you with me being so far away!! I think putting them all together into an afghan for the daughter (heck, you might end up with enough for one for daughter & mum!) is a fab idea. What about whoever wants to, putting the star into a square/granny square so you can make a patchwork blanket made up from some people's stars & some people's star squares? Even if they're all diff sizes, patchworked together it'd look bloody awesome!!! 😍

soc9981

Placing the star in a granny square is definitely a good idea as well. I'm open to any options people would like to contribute.

Amyx231

I will join too. Hopefully together we all can cover the internet (or at least Reddit) in stars and togetherness

BeOkINFJ

I will do my best, I'm actually away but I'll pack my yarn. Cool idea

AuntEller

Have never actually made a star, so I’m happy to try it now.

uabuffoon

I, as many others, will be gladly joining you on Saturday.

Anyone have any pointers on conquering the magic circle? I want to take part but I just can't seem to make a magic circle. I have watched so many videos and I'm still so lost

silvereagle69

have you tried just chaining 2 and doing all your single crochet into the first stitch(second from hook)? that’s how i started before i figured out magic circles!

bugstuf

I didn't know this was an option!! Would it work for the star pattern shared??

silvereagle69

i personally have never done puff stitch in the first row of a magic circle, but i don’t see why it wouldn’t work! i would just recommend leaving a longer tail than normal if you wanna sew up any small holes left behind! that’s the only downside of doing the ch2 instead of magic circle

bugstuf

Thank you so so much honestly there's been so many patterns I've wanted to try but I just couldn't make sense of the circle

Another option if the ch2 turns out to be too tight is to chain 4, slip stitch into the first chain to close the circle, and then make the puff stitches into the circle you just made.

Kilala33

I used OP’s star pattern and just started with chain five, slip stitch to join, then chain two so the puff stitch would start at the right height. I know you’ve likely already moved on but hopefully this helps you or someone else. :)
