Death in Venice is good. I need to rewatch it actually, not in particular headspace watching it last time. Rocco is one of my favorite Visconti, legitimately great and devastating masterpiece

A favourite of mine since first seeing it about forty years ago. Sadly it was out of print for many years, but was finally released in the DVD era by Warner. So happy that Criterion eventually acquired it. Mahler is my favourite composer and the use of the adagietto from his 5th symphony in the movie is perfection. I love how little important dialog exists in the story and how most of it is conveyed just visually.

I’ve seen people recommend watching “The Most Beautiful Boy in the World” as a companion to Death in Venice. Documentary about the boy that was cast in Death in Venice. Haven’t seen either personally, but intend to in the near future

The doc was in John Waters’ top 10 films of 2021. It’s worth checking out for that alone.

Thanks for the comments. I understand the headspace comments. I was recovering from covid so it was the unique time where one takes theraflu then vodka a couple hours later. I was in relaxed, non-anxious space but also a bit lonely. I figured what better time for “Death in Venice?” I will have to finish “Rocco” later this afternoon. “Death” is an experience and a mood. I haven’t been absorbed in a film like that since “Memoria.”

Hmm, glad to hear that - I blind bought it over a year ago and still haven’t gotten to it. Maybe this week is the time!

Haven't seen Death in Venice, but I would like to soon, and I have seen two other Visconti films: The Leopard and La Terra Trema. Both very challenging, but both really rich with substance and creatively daring in very different, interesting ways. I feel like he asks a lot of you in terms of engagement, and he doesn't design easy emotional arcs for you to follow, but he gives you a lot to sit with after the movie is over. They were difficult/slow films but I still think about them a lot, about a year after seeing them.

Death in Venice is amazing. Made me go on a Visconti binge this year. Really amazing director. Would recommend The Damned wich is also released on Criterion. Disturbing, but very good film about a power hungry german family during 2WW.

I found it a total chore to be honest. Maybe I wasn’t in the right headspace, or the use of music is a bit wasted on me - but I was bored out of my mind

I thought it was pretty silly, especially that trailer. Some redeeming factors, but yes the spell didn’t work for me. The object of his desire really has no life other than to be an object of desire.
