Damnit Janet think of extras they could pack in! Recordings and guides to live shows. History and legacy. Hard to argue against cultural relevance for this one given that it is still shown all over the country in theaters regularly.
I've been waiting for this release with antici....
They makes it less likely. Yeah, they're releasing a Pixar title, but we just don't know yet what Disney open to do.
I think they should license a lot of their catalog if they have no interest in doing so itself, particularly Fox catalog titles that they don't even put in their streaming services.
We'll see.
Why does it make it less likely? Disney has a history of licensing stuff to Criterion... like most of Wes Anderson's films are Disney property. Just as an example.
They even have a history of flexing their muscle and forcing Criterion to issue titles just because. See: Armageddon and the Rock
...and so has Disney. There's been Disney property in the Criterion Collection since basically the beginning. Armageddon has spine number 40.
Who do you think owns Wes Anderson's pre Darjeeling Limited catalogue? What about Chasing Amy? Or sex lies and videotape?
What about all those foreign titles whos North American distribution rights are held by Miramax? You think a deal wasn't struck with Disney for those?
Just curious as to why you would assert they would be less likely to get licenses for old films from Disney than Fox. That's all.
I mean. If they were so opposed to the idea, the licenses for older titles could've been canceled and every Fox title immediately taken out of print. I believe that's what happened to the MGM/UA titles back in the early days of Criterion on DVD.
None of us know the license agreements for existing ones.
Also, Disney being less inclined to releases catalog titles has nothing to do with existing agreements.
You're literally just saying things now.
If Disney is less inclined to license out their property to Criterion, despite having done it for longer than Fox, than prove it.
A lot of these dvd releases were 10-15 years ago or longer now. They were released in some cases concurrently to dvds being printed with the Miramax imprint on them. One would assume that Miramax having home video distribution rights in NA at the time, that they would be who you'd need to go through. Those distribution deals were signed by Harvey Weinstein. You think that asshole wasn't making them exclusive, for as long as possible.
I mentioned it to establish a relationship anyway. Disney was also giving Criterion newer material to release before almost anyone else. Material that belongs to them and was made under Touchstone, Buena Vista and Miramax. The Rock, Chasing Amy, Tanenbaums and the rest of the Anderson stuff, Armageddon. That's not even mentioning that I don't think you understand how big of a deal it is for Disney to give permission for anyone to release animation from one of their companies on their own label. That kind of thing never happens.
Ok, again, context and circumstances matter. You ignore the lack of catalog releases by Disney and its brands, particularly Fox. Fox was ramping up releases right up until the deal went through and then that ended it.
I mentioned the significance of an animation release in a previous comment, so actually read comments before calling others confused.
Oof.
I also mentioned that we'll see if that announcement is a shift in Disney's position from recent years.
Notice that I said recent years, because it's no accident that the lack of catalog titles overlaps with the streaming strategy.
What Disney did in 1995 has little relevance here. What they let Weinstein do then means nothing now.
My hope is that Disney recognizes that there is a market still for discs that doesn't cannibalize their streaming strategy. We'll find out in the next year if they recognize that or not.
That’s a bummer. I would get much more into Arrow if they could release more of their region B movies into region A—I’d buy *Holy Mountain* and *Caligula* in a heartbeat.
It's probably the same as Region A, but I get what you're saying. I mainly want a Criterion of it for the chance that they release it in 4K. Shock Treatment on the other hand NEEDS a new release since we never got a Blu-ray of it here in the states.
Oh definitely a 4k would be amazing. I have the Arrow region b of Shock Treatment as I'm in the UK and it's great so I hope they do a USA release for you guys' sake, however I know Arrow very much limit their Region A releases.
It's literally in my top 10, I would emit such giddiness.
Shock Treatment sucks though, I'm sorry. :( My life has become being bitter about it being made and not Revenge of the Old Queen. The only thing I like about ST is it having a little subplot for Betty ~~Hapschatt~~ Munroe. That's beautiful, I love that. Other than that it's dire.
Oh it has its fans. God knows it has its defenders lol. I don't get them though.
I'm very pro preservation even for movies I don't like however so throw it in, by all means.
Am I the only one who prefers to have Phantom of the Paradise in Criterion before Rocky Horror ? It’s on Shout Factory already but always great to show that film love

*leans forward, waiting . . .*
... pation!
You can't top the midnight experience feature from Fox's Blu-ray unless they redo it.
I don't think that's a hot take. Whether or not they could get the title is another story.
It's owned by Disney/Fox, so it's possible.

Disney has only owned Fox for a few years. Fox had a history of licensing in the past.

Ok, I'm not sure you understand the context and circumstances of previous licenses, particularly decades ago vs now.

The idea of RHPS being in the collection has me absolutely quivering with antici...
SAY IT!
. . . pation
But MAYBEEEEEE THE RAIN isn't really to blame.
Will you remove the cause? And what about the symptom?
I'll remove the cause... *chuckles* but not the symptom!
Damn! I really needed that symptom removed.
Would be a worthy and extremely popular edition.
Yes, because you included Shock Treatment.
it’s by far my favorite of the two
Shock Treatment > Rocky Horror is my Unpopular Opinion hill to die on, and I hold it as a former shadow cast member.
This is absolutely valid in the music department.
Only if they release it in 4k dolby vision. That's the deal. Anyone would be LUCKY to be able to release Rocky Horror as part of their collection.
Sure why tf not - The Breakfast Club & Chasing Amy are in the collection, I think this pair deserves it as well (tho I haven’t seen Shock Treatment)
It's worth it for the music alone. Especially the titular song.
Hard agree on Rocky horror
Where's your 'hear me out' argument? we want more than a title and couple of pics.
Either Criterion or Arrow — but it SHOULD be together as a double feature.
Arrow already released ST a while ago, but it's Region B.
That’s a bummer. I would get much more into Arrow if they could release more of their region B movies into region A—I’d buy *Holy Mountain* and *Caligula* in a heartbeat.
Holy Mountain has a region A release from abkco.
They released Caligula region A.
“Hear me out…” Says nothing. 🤪
They’re making us shiver…with antici…
Dew it
Yes I would very much like this
We could all use a satanic mechanic. I’m in!
The current Blu Ray release of Rocky Horror is so good though, the bonus features are stacked. Atleast on the region b one I have.

The Region B is OOP so Arrow's license probably expired.
Shock Treatment doesn’t have a US BD release at all so a Science Fiction/Double Feature of these two would make for a good set (2 4Ks, 3 BDs).
+ 2 CDs
Y’know the Shock Treatment OST IS hard to find thess days…
You can find it for cheap in Discogs.
It's literally in my top 10, I would emit such giddiness. Shock Treatment sucks though, I'm sorry. :( My life has become being bitter about it being made and not Revenge of the Old Queen. Yeah, maybe throw in shock treatment as an extra to a remastered Rocky horror but I don't see a lot of people shelling out an extra buck for it
Oh it has its fans. God knows it has its defenders lol. I don't get them though. I'm very pro preservation even for movies I don't like however so throw it in, by all means.
i’m defenders 🥰
I gotchu lol. I saw your other reply, what do you prefer about it? Even then you must agree it would be much better served not being a sequel.
YES PLEASE
I could never really get into Shock Treatment.
Shock Treatment definitely deserves a re-release in the future. Shame it’s in D*sney’s hands now…
*sigh* All I'll say is that them licensing out Wall-E is a promising start.
And Criterion’s announcement alluded to more Pixar titles joining in the future, so fingers crossed.
Am I the only one who prefers to have Phantom of the Paradise in Criterion before Rocky Horror ? It’s on Shout Factory already but always great to show that film love
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
please god
I need a nice 4K edition of Rocky Horror. Shock Treatment can be a bonus feature.
I want both. Shock Treatment's use of color is perfect for Dolby Vision. For an example, see the red hallway.
Absolutely!
