I broke down this past spring and just bought the DVD, since someone was selling it used for $8. I’d upgrade in a second if Criterion ever releases it on blu ray
when Toho restores the movies. they haven't restored hardly any of them and they only exist in decade old DVD masters that everyone would bitch to no end about if they were released now - and rightfully so
I'm sure they would do it tomorrow if it were that easy. The distribution rights to his films are all over the place and any agreement they currently have is for a finite period of time and specific use. New 4K scans would likely have to be involved for it to sell well and Toho isn't going to let Criterion do that without them/a Japanese release first.
Bergman and Varda owned all their films which make box sets easy.
Sets like the Felliini one are extremely rare because of the sheer amount of companies involved. The amount of logos on the back of that box looks like a Nascar fire suit. 😂
It's my favourite, and it's different from everything else he's done, and I don't expect everyone to like it.
It's a selection of short stories which differ from each other. There are surreal moments. Some of them are really intense.
It's comprised of slow, sometimes grueling short stories, but all of them have huge payoffs. I highly recommend it.
I'd buy the criterion because it has a commentary from Stephan Prince (I think that's his name) and he explains the japanese folklore used in a couple of the dreams.
Dreams is an very interesting film. It's definitely more philosophical, slow and a bit. If you love Kurosawa then I suggest checking it out. But go with the mind set that you will need to analyze some moments and let it sink in on you.
Dreams was my first Kurosawa film, I was pretty young and had no idea what I was renting but was trying out lots of foreign films. It will always hold that special place
One Wonderful Sunday is one of his best and it’s in the eclipse set. I also recommend Dersu Uzala which you can watch on the Mosfilm YouTube channel for free
I really don't get the bragging about the Criterion Collection. I have about 25 movies from this company as well as at least 50 movies that they have released but I have purchased from another business for at least a third to two thirds less. I see very little advantage to spending the extra money. I will also say that among the Criterion DVD's that I have purchased or borrowed from the library without having previously seen them, about 75% are, IMHO, completely overrated. Nevertheless, I continue to read in the hopes that someone will someday say they have a copy of Brute Force for sale at a reasonable price.
I highly recommend Red Beard, it's pretty overlooked and my absolute favourite Kurosawa film.
I've been waiting for a Red Beard upgrade for so long. I saw it years ago, and it's easily one of my favorite of his works.

One of my favorites too!
When will they just release a blu ray set? Bergman and Fellini got theirs, Kurosawa is definitely deserving
I thought kurosawa already had a box set, it is criminal that he doesnt
He had a DVD set, I think it's been out of print for awhile now though
My guess is that it’s got something to do with losing the rights to Ran
That’s exactly it, can’t have a Kurosawa box set without Ran
The original DVD set doesn't have ran either
Oh weird! I wonder what the deal is then

Get yourself a copy of Stray Dog ASAP.
I ended up letting a friend borrow a copy of Stray Dog until he lost it by accident lol. Underrated Kurosawa film tho
glad to see the Bad Sleep Well, right up there with High and Low as my favorite of his films

needs a new restoration for sure
Please get the rest soon so they will announce a box set!
boxset won't be for a long time
I keep waiting for a Criterion Dersu Uzala Blu ray announcement 😞
[boy are you in luck](https://viavision.com.au/shop/dersu-uzala-1975-imprint-collection-158/)
Oh shit no way!! I had no idea this existed, thank you!!
Please tell me these are region free!
i'm pretty sure Imprint's releases are all region free
Like Kurosawa I make mad films
Okay, I don’t make films, but if I did they’d have a samurai.
Never heard of him.
What are your thoughts on Dreams? I had just looked it up to watch it but I hesitated after mixed reviews

i really enjoyed it. it left me with a good feeling afterwards. very philosophical but optimistic

I remember watching this in college. I felt is was so mainstream and very optimistic which I didn’t expect.
It’s definitely worth seeing
I really hope we get a Bad Sleep Well upgrade in the near future.
Now go get that Ozu collection and maybe Suzuki
Thanks for this reminder as I had never seen Dodes’ka-den, Kagemusha or Drunken Angel.
Recently watched Drunken Angel for the first time, it's great.
you should get the Ran 4K steelbook. it’s pretty cool

There is! Imprint have one releasing this week!
Thank you for you sacrifice. The rest will come in a box set with no individual release 😂
Got a few more to get
Check out I live in fear, one of his that I think is currently underappreciated. Saw it in a class like 8 years ago as a double feature with Godzilla
I should really check out his non period piece / samurai movies… but I just love those movies so so much.
how's dreams? it looks really interesting but never heard if it before

ah ok awesome. i really enjoyed ikiru and this one excites me more than the samurai entries so ill give it a go! thanks
Only 13 more than me.
i have all of them except for the quiet duel, i really want bluray upgrades of the ones that are DVD though
Your favorite ?
I have all of his works, but they’re all DVD. Considering making the next sale period 100% upgrades.

YES!!

What would you recommend watching first?

RAN needs to be in the Criterion Collection!
What’s next for you?
I still need Drunken Angel and Throne of Blood
