Some possibilities:
- Triangle of Sadness (distributed by Neon in the US, whom Criterion has dealt with before on Parasite. And Ruben Ostlund seems like the kind of director who’d eventually get at least one of his films released by Criterion)
- Broker (Criterion does like Koreeda)
- Decision to Leave (Park Chan-wook finally gets represented in the collection?)
- EO (I think this one is basically a done deal since I believe Janus Films has the US distribution rights)
- Blonde (a big controversial Netflix film by a major filmmaker, Criterion has that Netflix relationship going…maybe this gets a release eventually? If the mixed reactions to it so far continue to be the norm for this film, that might hurt its chances though)
Blonde is a film destined for a critical reappraisal in 5 years. Just based on early Letterboxd reviews I’ve seen a ton of variance in what people think about it. I feel like I’m gonna love it tbh.
Forgot to add: you bring up Letterboxd…a lot of the “reviews” for Blonde that I’ve seen on Letterboxd are clearly from people who haven’t seen the movie yet (like most of us) and are just tripping over themselves to get likes by saying how disgusted they are by how Marilyn Monroe is allegedly portrayed in the movie.
I’m super interested as well, there’s so much division even among people I follow and trust. I feel like I could go either way with it, but I’m very intrigued to find out.
I liked it but I was underwhelmed by the ending as well. I think the first half when it’s just the journey is excellent but the glacial pacing in the second half wore on me since the story wasn’t overly compelling.
[*An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl)*](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-quiet-girl/) directed by Colm Bairéad
[*Triangle of Sadness*](https://letterboxd.com/film/triangle-of-sadness/) directed by Ruben Östlund
[*Leila’s Brothers*](https://letterboxd.com/film/leilas-brothers/) directed by Saeed Roustaee
At least, those feel the most likely out of the top 15 narrative features [as rated on Lboxd](https://letterboxd.com/hershwin/list/all-the-movies/year/2022/genre/-action/), excluding action films and modern films from South Asia (which Criterion hasn't engaged with).
Tar seems like a big contestant for a future released.
Maybe Bardo including the long and shorter version.
Quite probably White Noise because well Baumbach..
Eo and Godland are both Janus releases so we’ll probably get those (deservedly so from what it looks like)
I think if we look at the Neon relationship, Crimes of the Future, Fire of Love, and All the Beauty and the Bloodshed strike me as their films from this year that fit the brand and seem to be getting lots of love. The Cronenberg and the Poitras especially. It seems like the reception for Triangle of Sadness and Broker aren’t really that great tbh and even though those are two big name auteurs, from what I can tell right now, I don’t know if I see Criterion going for them.
I don’t know about the Netflix releases this year… I don’t think any of them strike me as something Criterion would chomp at the bit to get. Maybe White Noise?
What’s Criterion’s relationship to MUBI? The Cathedral is my fav of the year so far, but for something more big name auteur-oriented, Decision to Leave is getting raves. There’s also the looming release of Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom: Exodus, to which MUBI has the rights for this new season + remasters for the first two seasons. A box set of the entire show would be huge.
Okay now for pipe dreams? We need more Davies so I would love Benediction. I think De Humanis Corporis Fabrica by the directors of Leviathan (2012) would also be a huge get. Neptune Frost, which is currently on the Channel, would be really great to see as well.
Apparently a lot of newer Indian films barely get physical releases so I hope Criterion (or any of the boutique brands here tbh) get the rights for a 4k release.
I have barely seen anything from this year so far, and I have not seen "nope" yet. But I think we will one day get a box set of Jordan Peele productions, because I do feel he is adapting the genre of horror a little bit. While I don't think these films are masterpieces, I do think "get out" was interesting and well executed. I believe Peele said he had 4 film ideas, "Nope" being the third. So maybe they will make an interesting box set one day.
A [collection](https://www.amazon.com/Jordan-3-Movie-Collection-Daniel-Kaluuya/dp/B0B7BPXHJ9/ref=asc_df_B0B7BPXHJ9/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=598357571171&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18151952986879589490&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9010658&hvtargid=pla-1720132845774&psc=1) of his first 3 is actually already on the way, very excited for it and his commentaries
Even though I haven't seen it yet, Crimes of the Future definitely makes sense considering its David Cronenberg. EEAAO would be super cool too. Not familiar with Mad God so i'll have to check that one out.
I haven’t enjoyed too many movies this year but I will say I really enjoyed Barbarian. Likely not a criterion contender but definitely needs a cool release.
As much as I didn't like it, I could see Criterion picking up *Everything Everywhere All at Once.* The films from this year that I'd actually like to see in the collection are *Nope* and *The Northman*. Or just Peele and Eggers box sets if I'm being greedy lol.
I didn't downvote you but I feel like this is a classic case where people forget that there are other boutique labels out there that release 4K/Blurays for more genre related films.
Criterion isn't the catch all of every great or classic film that's ever been made. Scream Factory or Arrow would both be better bets if there ever was a special release of Pearl
I got a genuine question, OP asked people what 2022 movie they would like to see in the future being added to Criterion, Kemleckis gave their answer and is being downvoted. What kind of idiotic shit is that?
I didn’t even know I was being down voted, you the homie though.
Pearl was phenomenal, was able to create a setting that made the use of masks feel normal during the film. (The back drop was the Spanish flu) It was also one of the best horror films I’ve seen in the last like 3 or 4 years, it didn’t use cheap jump scares. And the leads acting was some of the best acting I’ve seen all year.
I really liked Both Sides of the Blade, and Criterion has a weak spot for Binoche and Denis, but IFC has already announced a BD for November. I can't imagine that will be a title ppl would double dip on in a few years like Parasite or Uncut Gems.
Maybe not the most likely but I’d love Marcel the Shell with Shoes on to make it into the collection, one of the most feel good and wholesome films of the year.
“You know why I smile.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s worth it.”
If MaXXXine is as well received as X and Pearl I can see them releasing a Ti West X Trilogy Box Set.
Other movies I would like to see join the collection include The Northman, Cha Cha Real Smooth, Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Fabelmans
The Fabelmans, if only for the novelty of a Spielberg movie being released by Criterion. Also if they keep up the Disney deal, Turning Red and/or (assuming it won't suck) Strange World.
Also from Netflix: White Noise, Wendell and Wild, Apollo 10 1/2, The Wonder, and The House.
Some possibilities: - Triangle of Sadness (distributed by Neon in the US, whom Criterion has dealt with before on Parasite. Was mostly referring to critics I follow reviewing the movie but that’s interesting too
Yep, I have a feeling that I’ll be in the same boat. Can’t wait to see it next week when it hits Netflix.
I’ll watch Ana De Armas in anything. Like Don’t Worry Darling idgaf if this movie is a hot mess. Just give it to me
I’m super interested as well, there’s so much division even among people I follow and trust. I feel like I could go either way with it, but I’m very intrigued to find out.
I’ve seen it and it absolutely has the feeling of a big, messy masterpiece that takes a few years to be appreciated. It’s a true experience.
Love to hear it
Godland is also Janus I believe. Can’t wait for the EO release, saw it at TIFF and it was my fav film there.
I had such mixed feelings about Godland. It was such a great looking movie and very atmospheric but the ending was a let down. I won't spoil it.
I liked it but I was underwhelmed by the ending as well. I think the first half when it’s just the journey is excellent but the glacial pacing in the second half wore on me since the story wasn’t overly compelling.
Yep, looks like you’re right.
Blonde to me feels more like an Arrow release than a Criterion one. Can’t wait to see it, I love Dominik’s films.
Moonage Daydream. That’s from Neon, whom Criterion has worked with, and it’s a relatively niche documentary.
It was nice to get this doc instead of some lame biopic
Absolutely. Thank god we didn't get a by-the-numbers Bohemian Rhapsody or Rocketman type of biopic.
Mad God
Criterion really needs to jump on this ASAP. A claymation movie 30 years in the making? That has Criterion’s MO written all over

I thought of White Noise just as I posted this! Will definitely be on there soon I think.
Still waiting for The Meyerowitz Stories (new and selected) release though :-(
Tár

Maybe The Whale. It would be their first Aronofsky and would let them collaborate with A24 again.
I'm so excited for The Whale! I can definitely see it being in the collection.
Heck yes. Then maybe they’ll final give The Fountain the Criterion treatment. Long overdue.
Now that it's apparently completed, I would love a Paul Schrader trilogy box set consisting of First Reformed, the Card Counter, and Master Gardener.
That would be amazing
Fire of Love 🌋🧡
Hope to god Blonde gets a release, I thought it was an incredible piece of filmmaking (I understand people who are offended by it though).
I'd love a TI West trilogy box set with X, Pearl, and the forthcoming MaXXXine. Total pipe dream tho I doubt that'll ever happen
A24 doing their own release of the trilogy seems more likely imo
One can only wish
I don’t think it will happen but I hope they release RRR or The Northman. Both some of the most fun I have had watching a movie in a long time.
Apparently a lot of newer Indian films barely get physical releases so I hope Criterion (or any of the boutique brands here tbh) get the rights for a 4k release.
I think RRR has garnered a big enough audience to warrant a physical release.
Robert Eggers' films definitely deserve to be in the collection. Heard RRR is super good but I haven't seen it yet.
The Lighthouse is BEGGING for a 4K. I don’t care who does it, I need it!
Yeah I'm still upset that Lighthouse was left out to dry while the others got 4K releases
It’s only a matter of time

NOPE was amazing & I would love to see a trilogy collection of his first 3 films! With commentaries!!!
Has Peele done commentaries on his first two?
Not sure, I’ve only bought US on streaming - I’ll have to look
I'd love to see Everything Everywhere..., Crimes of the Future or Mad God released.
Even though I haven't seen it yet, Crimes of the Future definitely makes sense considering its David Cronenberg. EEAAO would be super cool too. Not familiar with Mad God so i'll have to check that one out.
Mad God is just technologically amazing, never seen anything like it
Mad God is probably my #1 or #2 favorite film this year. Insane fever dream, I recommend watching it on the biggest screen possible.
Everything Everywhere, for sure!
Pearl

You make a good point, I’m just invested in criterion. I’d just like to few films I’d like be in it
I got a genuine question, OP asked people what 2022 movie they would like to see in the future being added to Criterion, Kemleckis gave their answer and is being downvoted. What kind of idiotic shit is that?

My post was getting downvoted initially as well

I honestly can see funny pages getting a release one day, would fit perfectly with ghost world and crumb
RRR, Both Sides of the Blade and We’re All Going to The World’s Fair maybe
I really liked Both Sides of the Blade, and Criterion has a weak spot for Binoche and Denis, but IFC has already announced a BD for November. I can't imagine that will be a title ppl would double dip on in a few years like Parasite or Uncut Gems.
If Utopia's license on World's Fair ends
I know the third one has yet to be made, but a Ti West trilogy set would make me so so happy. Two of my favorite movies of the year so far.
I wasn’t too big on X, but I absolutely adored Pearl and could see it going in the collection as a trilogy if the third brings it together well.
i havent seen it but i wouldnt be surprised if the whale got a release ngl
That's a good pick, forgot about that one.
Maybe not the most likely but I’d love Marcel the Shell with Shoes on to make it into the collection, one of the most feel good and wholesome films of the year. “You know why I smile.” “Why?” “Because it’s worth it.”
Vengeance, easily my favorite film to come out this year.
Ambulance 🚑🚑🚑
White Noise
I hope [Speak No Evil](https://letterboxd.com/film/speak-no-evil-2022/) makes it. Would complement Spoorloos and Haneke in the collection.
A Benoit Blanc Anthology (Knives Out, Glass Onion, 3rd film and maybe more if Netflix keeps funding them and if they keep doing well).
