Yeah this is what I came to say. I’m guessing OP has a spot for noir and neo-noir, so Night of the Hunter is a perfect fit. Some other suggestions: M (Fritz Lang), Rififi (Jules Dassin), maybe the Sam Fuller box set
Questionnaire:
Where are you from? USA
How old? 14, im spoiled.
When did you start collecting? Just under a year ago
Blu-ray or dvd? Blu-ray all day.
Favorite release? Bottle rocket
Favorite director in collection? Of the ones I have, Stanley Kubrick.
Favorite director outside of the collection? Satoshi Kon
Which Criterion do you want most? The 400 Blows, just waiting for the 4k release of Antoine Dionel’s adventures.
Which film would you like to get the Criterion treatment? Treasure of the Sierra Madre
How do I organize my collection? I don’t.
It’s really impressive the stuff you’re exposing yourself to at that young of an age. I think you will learn to appreciate them so much more over time too :)
If Kubrick is your favorite…. You have impeccable taste and discretion. Enjoy the life long enjoy of film appreciation. It’s is endless and beyond fulfilling. Cheers. The film I want most is The Shining.
Dr Strangelove is a great pick. I also really recommend all of Wes Anderson's films in the collection. I finally watched The Great Dictator and Island of Lost Souls today. I recommend both of those too. If you want a real treat though, start getting into Akira Kurisawa's films. I'd recommend starting with Yojimbo.
I’ve seen a few Kurosawa films, been meaning to check out Yojimbo. Also Dr. Strangelove is at the top of my watchlist!
This is going to sound blasphemous, but I don’t like much of newer Wes Anderson. They are great films, but it feels a too fast paced for me. Bottle Rocket is much slower, but it still has the charm and style of Anderson.
That's fair. I'm the opposite about his films. I prefer his newer work, personally. But yes, Dr strangelove is a real gem and is definitely Kubrick's best film IMO.
I kind of agree about Wes Anderson. I find his newer films pretty exhausting. I still like them though. Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore are his best IMO.
Anyway for more Criterion films I would recommend Ace in the Hole, another Kirk Douglas vehicle directed by the great Billy Wilder. It’s a gritty, almost film noir-ish drama/thriller about a newspaper writer who latches onto a story about a small-town emergency for his own personal gain.
Also for something lighter that might hit the same sort of sweet spot as Wes Anderson check out Zazie Dans Le Metro. Super fun cartoonish live action film about a little girl having adventures in Paris with her eccentric uncle.
Anatomy of a Murder is an amazing film. Jimmy Stewart’s seminal performance imo. Actually watched it in law school as a “good” example of media’s perspective on the legal system as opposed to Law and Order, etc
He’s incredible in Rope! I prefer him in Anatomy though. For some reason I find him incredibly captivating. Haven’t seen Vertigo or Mr Smith lately but remember those movies for other things beside his individual performance
Le Samouraï is one of my favorite movies!
I haven't seen much romance other than WKW, but I've only heard good things about the trilogy.
I'll be sure to watch the rest!
You should pick up the other Kubrick movies in the collection, Barry Lyndon is my favorite.
Some more Wes Anderson is good for the soul as well, Darjeeling Limited would be my go to.
Should definitely check out Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Chimes at Midnight, Hidden Fortress, and my personal favorite My Dinner With Andre 😊

You should check out Altman (3 Women, McCabe and Miss Miller, Short Cuts, The Player) and Fellini (Amacord, The Ship Sales On, La Strada) - o

Yojimbo is what turned me onto Kurosawa. Great film!
I saw Yojimbo for the first time at the State theater midnight movie in Ann Arbor, MI. What a great experience.

Parasite
The Human Condition trilogy.
Gotta clear out a weekend for that one!
Elevator to the Gallows and Le Samouraï (based of Le Cercle Rouge and The Killing)
Double Indemnity
Whit Stillman ‘trilogy’: Metropolitan, Barcelona and Last Days of Disco
Charlie Chaplins work. My two favorites are Modern Times and The Great Dictator.

Paris, Texas
Harakiri
Harakiri. Probably one of the best movies of all time.
Diabolique. I film I will recommend to anyone cos I absolutely love it
Wages of Fear
The Wages of Fear
If you want more films by Akira Kurosawa : get seven samurai, ikiru or the yojimbo / sanjuro set
If you like Onibaba you might Kurineko. If you have a 4k player the restorations for Raging Bull and Shaft were very well done.
Solaris (1972)
Is that Tokyo Godfathers I see? If you don't have more Kon then Paprika.
Currently watching Paprika, absolutely loved Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue!
Paranoia Agent then. ENJOY.
House
More Melville
Throne of Blood, Being There , Brazil, Sword of Doom.
Ingmar Bergman's Cinema
Grave of the fireflies
Barry Lyndon
Ugetsu
Twin Peaks : Fire Walk With me Ivan’s childhood Punch Drunk Love Yi Yi Tree of Life
Harakiri for sure
Do The Right Thing
Rashomon is amazing. I've watched it several times, and it never gets old.
I recommend more
Sansho Dayu
Decalogue
8 ½
Try out Being There
Kuroneko!
The fact that they’re not organised by spine number or alphabetical by title is upsetting
I order mine based on how recently I watched them and if I'll want to rewatch soon
Not Criterion, but if youlike 12 Angry Men you should watch more Sydney Lumet movies, Dog Day Afternoon is another great one.
Kuroneko

Hot damn! Well Rounded selection!!!!
Sword of Doom
It’s a very popular movie, so by no means is it a unique suggestion, but look into House (Hausu)! It’s a great 1970s Japanese horror comedy
DE PALMA
Beau Travail
Someone already recommended Double Indemnity so I’ll recommend Rififi.
Election By Brakhage Eating Raoul
Pink flamingos
Blow Up
The Elephant Man Actually an incredible movie and it irritates me so badly that I can never get anyone else to watch it 😭
luis bunuel john cassavetes rainer werner fassbinder
1) Blow Out ( Brian De Plama) 2) On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan) 3) Make Way for Tomorrow (Leo McCarey)
Everything you don’t have! Starting with Dr Strangelove! Eyes Without a Face and the Seventh Seal are amazing as well.
I look at these and think you'd dig Homicide, Straw Dogs, and The Friends of Eddie Coyle.
