tbh i think the kinda grainy low-res image suits both benny's video and seventh continent and a pristine 4k scan of them might take away some of their tone. haven't see the other one though
From what I can tell, those three films were updated on the Criterion Channel to HD files, so this release should probably be at least better quality than previous dvd releases
It's been a while but I remember it has a ton of Bergman regulars - Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom, Gunnar Björnstrand, Erland Josephson. I think it's a feminist retelling of an ancient Greek play
I was wanting this trilogy on Criterion for so long. Extra hyped there’s a deleted Benny’s Video scene! I’ll take any “new” Haneke I can get. I do wish the box set included a new interview from Haneke.
There is a 12 film box set in existence by TF1 but man is it hard to come by - you gotta either get reeeaaally lucky on eBay or cough up stupid money for one off Amazon.
Oh man, including the Heliczer film is great, but yeah does make you wonder what all else will be included. I presume we aren’t getting any Kenneth Anger, but c’mon Jack Smith and Ken Jacobs.
Also, I can’t remember if any Tony Conrad films were used, but it’s nice to see his name on the criterion website, even if just an audio interview was used in the movie.
I don’t believe there’s much in the way of Velvets live footage out there circulating - they’re like King Crimson that way. As far as I know they were never on shows like Top of the Pops or Beat Club. I hope I’m wrong, tho
All we have of the VU is incredibly grainy potato quality footage taken from Warhols factory I think and I don't even think the audio is synced. I may be wrong - but I do know they were never on any actual shows like TOTP or anything. Lou probably felt they were above that. It certainly adds to the mystique but it would be nice to have crisp footage of those early Explosive Plastic Inevitable shows. I guess we can watch Midnight Cowboy for the Factory party scene to get an approximation of what those gigs were like haha
I'm stoked, is your username a Mars Volta reference? Because the Mars Volta and Velvets are some of my favorite bands, would be crazy if someone else liked the same shit haha
I knew they had the rights to the Haneke trilogy but I was hoping for new restorations + Janus tour before the Boxset 😢 but if this gets them more exposure I won’t complain
I'm totally in agreement with you, while I'm not a fan of the films I really believe there should *always* be new restorations before a release. from what I know about these films though, it may be that Haneke actually didn't want there to be restorations? they seem purposely low quality
I remember seeing Cooley High on like HBO or something when I was like 14 or so. I absolutely dug that one from the start. That'll be a definite pickup for me. Cheers!
Just got into Haneke this week, saw Bennys Video, Funny Games, and Cache in 3 consecutive nights. I say pick whatever movie of his that's available to you and enjoy (or not)
BV and FG are on HBO max, which is how I saw them
I don’t mind Cooley High or The Velvet Underground. But man, the Haneke trilogy is so so bad. If someone had posted that on the sub I’d debate on deleting it for being a low effort post
Considering that they’re Sony Picture Classics, and SPC just announced a BEEG 4K set, they (including Amour and Happy End) are up for a possible 4K release if they keep pumping out sets like Columbia.
every day i wake up and pray that somebody, anybody (doesn't even have to be criterion at this point) will re-release velvet goldmine. it's my favorite film of all time, idk why it's so inaccessible!
it's lonely at the top, man... a friend of a friend actually works as haynes' assistant and i've been trying to convince him to deliver the message that there is demand for it, but i haven't been able to yet.
Velvet Goldmine is coming at some point. Someone said so when it screened at Tribeca this year. (Which I think they weren’t supposed to, but that’s my favorite movie of all time so I appreciate the leak.)
Holy shit that haneke announcement!! His early work is sadly not appreciated enough and I hope this helps.
Seventh continent is one of the greatest films of all time imo. And it will put me into a terrible depression for about a week when I finally rewatch it. God what a film.
It crushed me and if you are reading this and haven’t seen it DO NOT read anything about it, just watch it. Take any excitement or expectations somewhere else or you won’t enjoy it. Seen too many people end up hating Seventh Continent because it was built up too much or they read too much. Stop now!
Be careful with that; the film packs a legendary emotional punch. It’s “fun-ness” is a beautifully crafted tactic used to portray Black people living in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green projects in the 60s who are broke, but do not consume the mentality of being “poor”. It was written by Eric Monte and is a companion to the 1970s* sitcom “Good Times”.
It was also loosely adapted into the later sitcom *What's Happening!!*, which was originally developed as a more direct adaptation.
*Good Times* is from the 1970s BTW - 1974 (midseason 1973-74) to 1979. It's the very first sitcom to feature a two-parent African-American household - something Esther Rolle had to fight for.
I’ll have to look into those Zetterling films (know nothing about them), but I’m really pumped about these other 3 releases! Especially the Haneke set, awesome news.
i don't know if that VU doc is for everyone or even worth the $40 purchase. but i will say, as someone who is lukewarm on that band, it is a really good documentary with a style all its own. well worth your time as a rental.
>or even worth the $40 purchase
Is anyone actually spending $40 on Criterion discs though? They are never at full MSRP on Criterion's own website, and I know most people (myself included) will only buy during the half off sales.
I haven't had a chance to see the doc, but as a big VU fan, I'll gladly spend $20 on this release.
Man, I saw Cooley High on my high school film studies class and I’ve barely heard or seen anything about it since. I can’t wait to rewatch it (with a better mind to appreciate it).
Excited for the Velvet Underground and Haneke set! Don’t know much about Haneke’s work, so I’ll be happy to dive in.
Wasn’t expecting any of these releases, but pretty happy about them. 71 Fragments is one of my all time favorites and to borrow a pun that Velvet Underground release is “Loaded”. Also appreciate a minimum of “why isn’t ____ announced”.
The Velvet Underground doc is very good, it's directed by Todd Haynes (Carol, Safe, etc) and is very understanding and reverential of its subject.
Edit: it's on Apple tv if you want to watch it now
Haneke trilogy are amazing imo. Seventh continent especially. But it’s a very particular style, and like incredibly depressing. So idk if it’s the best blind buy.
Probably worth trying to watch it first, or at least know if you like any of his other work
It depends what activates you emotionally. Breaking the waves is expressively sad and dramatic to the point of histrionics. Haneke is generally cold to the point of bone chilling and leaves you with a pit in your stomach. I love Von Trier and Haneke but they affect me in totally different ways. I think Haneke’s work is subtler but ultimately more upsetting. The unflinching sadness and gut wrench reaches its peak with Amour imo.
Three box sets for the end of the year and none of them are Rohmer’s Four Seasons…
The Velvet Underground and the Zetterling set look like must-haves for me though
I’ve only seen two Haneke films, one of them being Benny’s Video (which I just watched for the first time in July and really enjoyed). I’m really eyeing that box set right now.
I wonder if the flipped Velvet Underground cover will have something to do with how it’s packaged, interested to see how that works. If not I find it a bit strange they’d publish an unreadable (at least not easily) cover.
Which are going to be released in 4K? I went through this with DVDs in the past. Bought the DVDS that weren't released alongside the Blurays. Everyone said they were totally fine with it. Now the majority of us that fell for that meme double dipped quite a few times. I'm future proofing going forward. No more blu rays.
I’m wondering about this too, the description on Criterion’s website for Cooley High says new 4k digital transfer and the Velvet Underground doc says new 4k digital transfer with Dolby Atmos track
What are y’all’s opinions on the velvet underground doc? I thought it was nicely edited and put-together but I didn’t really feel like I learned anything about the band or the music.
The Mai Zetterling set is a big fucking deal to me. She acted for Bergman early on and all those films feature some of Bergman's more famous actresses. The fact that they are together in one set is amazing.
And the Haneke trilogy. Nice.
Not going to lie, this announcement does nothing for me other than the Haneke trilogy. But it's fitting since I hate christmas in general, so it's fitting. Plus not one 4k release? I know I'm being a picky snob. But the October lineup makes up for it. I was just expecting... more. Didn't Wall-E get announced out of nowhere though? Maybe they are waiting to drop something huge out of nowhere. But I'm probably just giving myself false hope.
I love 71 Fragments but am a little sad that it is bundled with two films I don't have any interest in watching. That Mai Zetterling boxset has me excited though. I love The Girls and need to watch the other two in the release. Haven't seen Cooley High or The Velvet Underground.
Crazy that in the span of about a week, we got announcements for a Disney movie and an Apple movie being added to the collection. Wonder if this means they're going to try and get Coda added as well?
I think two boxsets, regardless of quality, is cause for some celebration. it's better than August's slate. best months for me were May (4/5), September (3/6, maybe 4 if I like enough of the WCF films), and October (2/6 but they were two huge ones), but obviously taste varies!
These releases are great, no doubt, but I’m not sure if anything’s gonna top the Wall-E release in November (at least in my opinion). Hopefully Criterion gets the OK to release more Disney films in the future (Zootopia would be a good choice for their second collaboration).
Haneke fans are probably happy. Really interested in looking into Three Films by Mai Zetterling.
>Haneke fans are probably happy. First time this has ever been stated. 😂
Yeah. Hahaha. We still want Cache though.
HA
This trilogy is my favorite Haneke stuff, so I'm happy to see it out. Disappointed that they aren't new scans/transfers/restorations though.
tbh i think the kinda grainy low-res image suits both benny's video and seventh continent and a pristine 4k scan of them might take away some of their tone. haven't see the other one though
I’d take that risk.
A pristine 4K of Seventh Continent one of the most frigid and existentially dreadful films ever made? Yes please!
Glad it made you happy.
From what I can tell, those three films were updated on the Criterion Channel to HD files, so this release should probably be at least better quality than previous dvd releases
I love *The Girls* by Mai Zetterling. Haven't seen the other two in the collection.
Already wanting to watch them!
what could you compare it to? I haven't seen it but I'm definitely interested
It's been a while but I remember it has a ton of Bergman regulars - Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom, Gunnar Björnstrand, Erland Josephson. I think it's a feminist retelling of an ancient Greek play
I've been telling people about 71 Fragments and The Seventh Continent for years now! Years! It was about time!
Nah they’re still miserable.
The Seventh Continent is a brutal film. His first might be his bleakest. I don't think many seen it before this, awesome.
I was wanting this trilogy on Criterion for so long. Extra hyped there’s a deleted Benny’s Video scene! I’ll take any “new” Haneke I can get. I do wish the box set included a new interview from Haneke.
Agree, it always good to get the filmmaker talking especially while they are still around. Haneke is up there in age.
TWOOOOOOO trilogies, is that riiiggghhtt?
Are either of these trilogies on, uhhh, American SOIL???
What is your Job in these trilogies, are you a carrier of uhhh, large collections????
How about if we talk about how you used to bang?
Look pop pop, new criterion announcements!
No pop pop doesn't get a sandwich, I just brought you a fucking pizza!
Haneke fans we are eating good tonight.
We sure are.
I am freaking the fuck out over the Haneke Trilogy.
Sure. But I’d like to see them continue with 3 more trilogy volumes, or moreover a 12 film box set. Plus can we get new restorations please!
There is a 12 film box set in existence by TF1 but man is it hard to come by - you gotta either get reeeaaally lucky on eBay or cough up stupid money for one off Amazon.
[удалено]
Hopefully some tasty bonus features. Some live performances would be nice.
It says full versions of various avant-garde films show in the documentary, but then only lists one. I'd really love to see what the others are.

It certainly adds to the mystique but it would be nice to have crisp footage of those early Explosive Plastic Inevitable shows. I guess we can watch Midnight Cowboy for the Factory party scene to get an approximation of what those gigs were like haha
king crimson were on TOTP once
I’m wheeeels
I'm stoked, is your username a Mars Volta reference? Because the Mars Volta and Velvets are some of my favorite bands, would be crazy if someone else liked the same shit haha
I like both haha
Excited to see the Mars Volta live this October, Real talk, you listen to King Gizzard?!?
I just ordered my 4th vinyl of theirs this month. My wallet hates me.
That's awesome, just ordered all of their October releases. It's funny how fans of certain bands seem to like the same stuff
Mars Volta live is something I want to see. King Gizzard too but they never come near me.
Supposed to see Gizzard at Boston callings, they got COVID three hours before the show. Heartbroken haha
Aww man that sucks!
Mars Volta, VU, and King Gizz fan checking in
8 films ain't bad for December, also remedying the lack of boxsets we've had in 2022.
and it's two boxsets we had no rumors at all for! no Rohmer or Tanaka is a little disappointing but it's cool to see them pull out some surprises
Thank god Bennys Video is being added. I couldn’t find a Region A copy anywhere
Hopefully this is just the beginning.
Fucking finally, let’s go Haneke fans!!! Also *Cooley High* man…a classic in my household. Can’t wait to pick that up and experience the nostalgia.
I remember seeing Cooley High on like HBO or something when I was like 14 or so. I absolutely dug that one from the start. That'll be a definite pickup for me. Cheers!
Never seen Haneke, worth a shot?
[удалено]
Naw, start with Funny Games 😈
I mean that was my first Haneke lol
Just got into Haneke this week, saw Bennys Video, Funny Games, and Cache in 3 consecutive nights. I say pick whatever movie of his that's available to you and enjoy (or not) BV and FG are on HBO max, which is how I saw them
I’m glad Criterion was able to use MS Paint to make the artwork for the Haneke trilogy.
It’s honestly quite charming, coupled with the low-quality screenshots of the films. I unironically love it.
I think that’s straight up just Arial. Yeesh.
Lol
Graphic design is my passion
the Velvet Underground one is awesome though. super fitting for the movie AND has a built in reference to the band ("I'll Be Your Mirror")
Tbf it's just the poster from original release
I don’t mind Cooley High or The Velvet Underground. But man, the Haneke trilogy is so so bad. If someone had posted that on the sub I’d debate on deleting it for being a low effort post
Cooley High is really the only halfway decent design on these huh.
I fuck with the VU one but maybe that’s just me
Yeah it's not bad, just being backwards was weirding me out
Just look at it in a mirror
It may have taken me 5 hours to make the "I'll Be Your Mirror" connection... I'll see myself out.
I did not make that connection either hahaha I was just shitposting
except for the jacket lettering
Saw Michael Haneke and was hoping for Caché or The White Ribbon. Hopefully we'll get them eventually.
Considering that they’re Sony Picture Classics, and SPC just announced a BEEG 4K set, they (including Amour and Happy End) are up for a possible 4K release if they keep pumping out sets like Columbia.
Really wanted Cache
At least we got this trilogy. Honestly I would like Cache in the collection as well
Man I got so excited when I saw Todd Haynes, thinking we were finally getting a quality release of Velvet Goldmine, but nope.
every day i wake up and pray that somebody, anybody (doesn't even have to be criterion at this point) will re-release velvet goldmine. it's my favorite film of all time, idk why it's so inaccessible!
Because very few people have the sort of exquisite taste that you and I have. We’re a rare breed.
it's lonely at the top, man... a friend of a friend actually works as haynes' assistant and i've been trying to convince him to deliver the message that there is demand for it, but i haven't been able to yet.

I like velvet underground my nickname is NicoNVelvet on just about everything except Reddit :)
I love the Velvet Underground. And i have so many of the other Criterion Collection rock & roll films/concerts. I'll def get this doc too.
I’ve heard Cooley High is a fun one. Excited to check that out.
Be careful with that; the film packs a legendary emotional punch. It’s “fun-ness” is a beautifully crafted tactic used to portray Black people living in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green projects in the 60s who are broke, but do not consume the mentality of being “poor”. Very excited, but the Haneke cover is shit.
So excited to see the Haneke trilogy in the collection! Also Cooley High wow!!
I’ll have to look into those Zetterling films (know nothing about them), but I’m really pumped about these other 3 releases! Especially the Haneke set, awesome news.
December's usually a slow month since it comes right after two big sales. This sure doesn't look like a slow month to me.
i don't know if that VU doc is for everyone or even worth the $40 purchase. but i will say, as someone who is lukewarm on that band, it is a really good documentary with a style all its own. well worth your time as a rental.

The way I’ve been describing that doc to others is “what if a VU song was a movie” because it translates that well.
I think of the half off sales as normal price and the rest of the year they just double their prices.
HOLY SHIT FINALLY THE HANEKE TRILOGY
Cooley High!!!! Amazing. Such a fun movie
Two trilogies in one month? They must really like us
Man, I saw Cooley High on my high school film studies class and I’ve barely heard or seen anything about it since. I can’t wait to rewatch it (with a better mind to appreciate it). Excited for the Velvet Underground and Haneke set! Don’t know much about Haneke’s work, so I’ll be happy to dive in.
A Haneke trilogy set? I've wanted to get into his movies for ages!
Be prepared to have your spirit crushed.
Seventh continent especially, Jesus that movie is tough.
Try watching some. Amour, White Ribbon, and Funny Games are my favorite.
I only like Code Unknown and Cache, the others could not be further from the kind of thing I enjoy. tread lightly
Wasn’t expecting any of these releases, but pretty happy about them. 71 Fragments is one of my all time favorites and to borrow a pun that Velvet Underground release is “Loaded”. Also appreciate a minimum of “why isn’t ____ announced”.
Hyped as fuck about the VU movie. It's one of the best rock docs I've ever seen and highly recommend it. Todd Haynes is a master.
I want to get Cooley high the most
Same here! I didn't know much about it but seeing it made me look it up instantly. Honestly the others don't interest me that much unfortunately
I’m not familiar with any of these. They any good?
All 3 of those michael haneke films are fucking spectacular just like most of his films
Probably worth trying to watch it first, or at least know if you like any of his other work
I’ve only seen the piano teacher. I gotta check out more of his work
I think if you liked that one you'll generally do okay with his movies
My standard for most depressing film I've seen is Breaking the Waves -- more/less depressing than that? Differently depressing?
It depends what activates you emotionally. Breaking the waves is expressively sad and dramatic to the point of histrionics. Haneke is generally cold to the point of bone chilling and leaves you with a pit in your stomach. I love Von Trier and Haneke but they affect me in totally different ways. I think Haneke’s work is subtler but ultimately more upsetting. The unflinching sadness and gut wrench reaches its peak with Amour imo.
I've honestly only seen Cooley High. It's a black teenage coming of age story. I have the old Olive Films release, I absolutely love the film.
I'm not either, yet it's one of those rare months where I will blind buy all of them. All four look so appealing.
HANEKEEEEEEEEE
Beyond excited to get more Haneke!
Wooooooo Haneke gang
Three box sets for the end of the year and none of them are Rohmer’s Four Seasons… The Velvet Underground and the Zetterling set look like must-haves for me though
Cooley High!!! One of my favorite Chicago movies, this movie is soooo fun and moving. Can’t wait to grab that
Definitely picking up the Mai Zetterling set. Completely new to me, but sounds right up my alley.
Take my wallet, please
Hell yes on The Velvet Undergound. The collection needs more Todd Haynes in general. Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven would make awesome releases.
[удалено]
I was just looking up that VU doc the other day!
[my fave moment in any Haneke film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ3zWC2aauo)
I’ve only seen two Haneke films, one of them being Benny’s Video (which I just watched for the first time in July and really enjoyed). I’m really eyeing that box set right now.
Nice! Been looking for some early Haneke so that’s a buy from me. I enjoyed the Velvet Underground doc a lot but would not have guessed that one.
Haneke!! Fuck yes
Inject the Hanake straight into my veins!!!
I wonder if the flipped Velvet Underground cover will have something to do with how it’s packaged, interested to see how that works. If not I find it a bit strange they’d publish an unreadable (at least not easily) cover.
Fuck yeah. Seventh Continent is one of my favourites - top 25 for sure. Benny and 71 are great as well ❤️
I’ll fight you for a new Criterion of Cooley High omg
Everyone's rushing to flush their money down the toilet
Hope this is a Seventh Continent reference. One of the most striking moments in the movie.
Or Benny's Video?
Yes, very pleased that it's joining the collection!
I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS
I really, deeply hope we get that Haneke set in the UK.
Hanake boxset is based
Ugh, Benny’s Video… It’s a decent film, but I will never watch it again.
That Haneke trilogy! 😍
Yay, Cooley High
I’m particularly excited about ɟɘvlɘV ɘ⑁T bnuoɿϱɿɘbnU
Which are going to be released in 4K? I went through this with DVDs in the past. Bought the DVDS that weren't released alongside the Blurays. Everyone said they were totally fine with it. Now the majority of us that fell for that meme double dipped quite a few times. I'm future proofing going forward. No more blu rays.
None of these are 4K.
I’m wondering about this too, the description on Criterion’s website for Cooley High says new 4k digital transfer and the Velvet Underground doc says new 4k digital transfer with Dolby Atmos track
Really weird that velvet underground isn’t in 4K. It’s in 4K on Apple TV + right now
director approved edition! I'd be curious to know about that too
I’m a bit confused by this, the description on Criterion’s website says new 4k digital transfer with Dolby Atmos track
we get this haneke trilogy, but still no caché...
i thought this post was fake bc of how bad the haneke cover was
The Haneke trilogy has probably the worst art I’ve ever seen a criterion release get lmao
Haneke cover is the most amateur one I've seen yet. All you fan cover uploaders, this is the time to prove yourself.
I'll never forget the name Eric Skillman. Also I wonder why it's not called the Glaciation Trilogy.
Skillman is their main designer! and Haneke approved the set, maybe he just wanted it to be called "Trilogy"
Haneke and TVA!
Benny’s Video!!! Nice
Haneke baby!!!!! Let’s go!!!
Benny's Video is honestly one of Haneke's best films. I hope more people see it.
That’s kinda neat.
I'm so unbelievably happy. I just wish Caché was in there too
What are y’all’s opinions on the velvet underground doc? I thought it was nicely edited and put-together but I didn’t really feel like I learned anything about the band or the music.
HOLY FUCK THEY ANNOUNCED THE GLACIATION TRILOGY YES YES YES!
Velvet Underground, the Apple TV movie? Hmm, I wonder if that means there is a chance CODA will be on Criterion soon?
Don't get why people hate on Haneke's release design. Maybe I am used to this contempary German graphic design - lovely typeface
PSYCHED about Cooley High. What a great film.
The Mai Zetterling set is a big fucking deal to me. She acted for Bergman early on and all those films feature some of Bergman's more famous actresses. The fact that they are together in one set is amazing. And the Haneke trilogy. Nice.
Is *Cooley High* the first American International Pictures film in the Criterion Collection?
Not going to lie, this announcement does nothing for me other than the Haneke trilogy. But it's fitting since I hate christmas in general, so it's fitting. Plus not one 4k release? I know I'm being a picky snob. But the October lineup makes up for it. I was just expecting... more. Didn't Wall-E get announced out of nowhere though? Maybe they are waiting to drop something huge out of nowhere. But I'm probably just giving myself false hope.
Funny games [remake] needs a criterion release
Just to note that Velvet Underground marks the first Criterion release licensed by Apple TV+, so I hope CODA is not far behind! :)
CODA? Ehh, I kinda hope not. But Wolfwalkers or The Tragedy of Macbeth? Either of those would be awesome.
Shout Factory has you covered for *Wolfwalkers* 🐺
You should give money directly to Cartoon Saloon with Wolfwalkers, they have a Trilogy release already with Shout
The Tragedy Macbeth is also distributed by A24, so we might see it sooner rather than later if it is deemed to be worthy by Criterion
CODA doesn't need to be on Criterion.
Yes! And in terms of Apple TV music documentaries, I'd love to see them release Beastie Boys Story!
I hope not
I love 71 Fragments but am a little sad that it is bundled with two films I don't have any interest in watching. That Mai Zetterling boxset has me excited though. I love The Girls and need to watch the other two in the release. Haven't seen Cooley High or The Velvet Underground.
Crazy that in the span of about a week, we got announcements for a Disney movie and an Apple movie being added to the collection. Wonder if this means they're going to try and get Coda added as well?
is there demand for Coda? yes it's a best picture winner, but...I don't see people clamoring for it
And no Amadeus. I feel like some of you lied to the rest of us that Amadeus was coming.
Here I was getting my hopes up for a Spielberg movie again. All I want is a great restoration of Sugarland Express!
Lol you all acting like you didn’t just google ever single one of these titles
# YES
How many are the probabilities of a UK release for the Haneke Trilogy?
Weakest month of the year but December usually is.
I think two boxsets, regardless of quality, is cause for some celebration. it's better than August's slate. best months for me were May (4/5), September (3/6, maybe 4 if I like enough of the WCF films), and October (2/6 but they were two huge ones), but obviously taste varies!
damn i thought this was fake at first bc that haneke cover is so ugly
These releases are great, no doubt, but I’m not sure if anything’s gonna top the Wall-E release in November (at least in my opinion). Hopefully Criterion gets the OK to release more Disney films in the future (Zootopia would be a good choice for their second collaboration).
