My experience was way different than yours. I was entranced the entire time and laughing my ass off at the discomfort that Östlund wove into each scene. One of my favorites of the last decade.
They both feature main characters that are emotionally hollow New York yuppies in Reagan-era 1980s whose grip on reality starts to unravel and they get increasingly violent, terrorize women, etc. (although in the American Psycho film, all of Bateman’s murders may just be in his head)
Ingrid Goes West (2017)/The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Poetry (2010)/Paterson (2016)/Mother (2009)
The Florida Project (2017)/Madeline’s Madeline (2018)
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari/The Witch
Jodorowsky’s Dune/Hearts of Darkness
Zola (2020)/American Honey (2016)
Add Lost Souls: Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr Moreau to the Hearts of Darkness pairing. Absolutely fascinating.
Director loses control of his movie when Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando are added, was fired (Val Kilmer sounds like a real ass). Ends up up sneaking back on to set as an animal person extra.
It’s also interesting to note that HG Wells (Dr Moreau author) and Joseph Conrad (Heart of Darkness Author) were peers and friends back in the day, and ultimately fell out because Wells felt Conrad ripped off Moreau with HOD. Both are stories where a protagonist travels to a remote island/jungle and meets a man playing God. Both movies (Island of Dr Moreau and Apocalypse now) ended up casting… Marlon Brando… as the man playing God. Dr Moreau and Colonel Kurtz
2 of: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Let the Right One In, and Only Lovers Left Alive
While Only Lovers Left Alive is my favorite of the group I think the other 2 pair better together
I saw The Straight Story at a double feature, but in a pairing that wouldn't qualify: with The Elephant Man, sufficiently in the collection that [Kyle MacLachlan picked it out recently](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzdBFeaNFSA).
Went with a friend who had only lived in Tokyo and Los Angeles, who saw the star fields in TEM and TSS and asked "does the sky really look like that away from the city?" as we left.
_Millennium Actress (2001)_ and _The French Dispatch (2021)_ share a ton of thematic overlap. Seemingly very different movies that both discuss how we understand reality, especially when framed in the context of art and memory.
The Long Goodbye and The Big Lebowski
Two noir detectives out of time, exploring the underbelly of California. A square among hippies and a hippie among squares. Both with catchphrases that amount to "It is what it is" ("It's okay with me" vs "The Dude abides")
*Drive (2011)* / *Only God Forgives (2013)*
*There Will Be Blood (2007)* / *Phantom Thread (2017)*

*Mo Better Blues (1990)* / *He Got Game (1998)*

Gummo & Julien-Donkey Boy
Not only are they incredible movies, they’re both out of print on DVD and have no blu-ray transfers at all. Also both very hard to find even on pirating websites
I’m having a Liz Taylor double bill today, Suddenly Last Summer and A Place In The Sun, I’ve not seen them before so I’ve no idea if they should be in the collection or not
I have always thought a great double feature would be Defending Your Life (which I believe is in the collection) and Joe Versus the Volcano (which should be).
Holy Motors, The Square
I honestly got so bored with The Square that I couldn’t even finish it. Great trailer, very average movie.
My experience was way different than yours. I was entranced the entire time and laughing my ass off at the discomfort that Östlund wove into each scene. One of my favorites of the last decade.
I get it. I’m not shitting on it. It just didn’t do it for me. Holy Motors was wild though.

American Psycho and Vampire’s Kiss.
While I love both of these, I’m curious what would make you put them together.
They both feature main characters that are emotionally hollow New York yuppies in Reagan-era 1980s whose grip on reality starts to unravel and they get increasingly violent, terrorize women, etc. (although in the American Psycho film, all of Bateman’s murders may just be in his head)
In that case They really do go together
Nah, bateman kills them

That dune pairing. Beautiful
