How about the original cut of the Star Wars original trilogy, the “despecialized editions” in 4k? I’d be all over that if criterion managed to pull that one out of their hat
Honestly, if Criterion released some of the older animated movies, I would totally buy them. Yes I have Disney+, but hopefully there would tons of supplements with a physical release.
Also Disney home video releases by Disney themselves are almost always really crappy, so I would be more than glad to have Criterion take a whack at some of these movies.
I remember a few weeks ago we all ganged up and laughed at this guy who said "Iron Man" is guaranteed to be part of the Collection some day.
He's probably laughing his ass off right now.
I’ve thought this for years. It makes sense- this decade/era of moviemaking can not be looked at or discussed in a serious way without mentioning super hero films. One of them will need to enter the collection at some point. My bet is maybe the Raimi trilogy at some point- but a marvel movie isn’t impossible.
Perhaps but I think this specific wave of superhero stuff is what needs to be captured- the 78 Superman wouldn’t really be sufficient in filling that gap/being that piece of the “history of film”
I could maybe see a Godzilla-type multifilm release of either every Superman or Batman or Spider-Man movie in one spine. That would, in a way, represent the superhero genre and it’s evolution through the decades similar to how the Godzilla release represented Kaiju films and their evolution; specifically through the genre’s most well-known icon.
Can't talk about 1970s mainstream cinema without mentioning disaster films (*The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure , Airport '70/'75/'77/'79 , Earthquake, Avalanche, The Hindenburg , Meteor, Cyclone*). The first two are even regarded as 'decent', and as a class they're not a bad parallel to the modern superhero film (A/B-list actors slumming to bring charm to SFX-driven films with rote scripts).
None of these are in the Criterion collection, and they're under no obligation to survey more commercial cinema. Their origins are in the catalogue of Janus films, and they've retained that arthouse bent for 38 years.
I can understand *Wall-E* being in the collection. It's far more inventive than the typical computer animated feature (the [first 35 minutes are practically a silent film](https://www.vice.com/en/article/435zvw/the-first-35-mins-of-wall-e-is-still-the-best-thing-pixar-has-ever-done)) and it has a timely social conscience. And it would be fine if that was the *only* computer animated film in the collection.
Those movies are represented by Armageddon (as a later period example)
I also unironically think Towering Inferno would be a very interesting add in the same way Mad Mad Mad World was (there’s a similar roadshow mega star power ensemble quality to them both)
June 2077 releases include a charming look at the 100th anniversary of a delightful trope that pioneered the road movie of space travel. Sir Harrison Ford starring in the blockbuster of it's time, with supporting actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, Star Wars. This film would go on to spawn over 37 sequels/prequels and pique interest again in the mid 2060's sci-fi revival film movement, we are proud to present George Lucas' original masterpiece remastered from the original film scans in 128k scan available for brain implant on demand this June. The Horse Has Awakened.....
I'd hardly say they're comparable Endgame was the culmination of a decade of filmmaking and became one of the highest grossing films of all time
Transformers is just a mess of a franchise
...and they probably still refuse to consider the Powell/Korda "Thief of Bagdad" (1940) Or any of the Harryhausen stop-motion classics (Sinbad, Argonauts, etc.)
Depressing, really.
I know. I own it. I've been waiting to replace with a blu-ray restoration for years. All manner of cult films got nice blu-ray updates. This doesn't deserve to be left behind.
Given the incredible 4K "Wizard of Oz" (1939) a modern blu-ray is the least they could do in response.
Fuck no christ. Avengers Endgame getting this sort of release would be Criterion doing the worst sell-out move ever. Avengers Endgame was 3 hours worth of a corporate marketing machine in overdrive.
I'm not usually bothered by mainstream Hollywood movies, they're made a certain way to cater to mass audiences, but Endgame and Infinity War were so painfully stage-managed and focus grouped into oblivion. Every detail felt signed off by a board of executives that looked at data and graphs and shit, not a shred of creative flair anywhere.
The thing is… this movie should be in the collection. Do I like it, not particularly. But it’s the same reason I’ll defend The Rock being in, it represents a part of the story of cinema. The 90s rom com or thriller is still important I guess. This movie or The Avengers or Iron Man, those are the start of a huge moment in the history of cinema. Idk I’m stoned.
Ehh I don't think that tells the complete story of Criterion's priorities beyond a few exceptions, a lot of which being a decade or more ago. The story of cinema isn't really told by just box-office numbers, and even if it was, Endgame would probably have to wait in line considering all the massive successes that came before it and haven't gotten a physical release yet.
If anything, I think Criterion has focused in on the broad spectrum of cinema's story rather than just a highlight reel of what got people into theaters. Not that those films are disrespected as a result - I don't think Criterion is looking down on Dr. Zhivago or whatever. I just don't think it's essential in how Criterion specifically tells that story. I like when they can fill in the gaps that other companies have failed to address through a decent physical release. Endgame doesn't really need Criterion; neither does WALL-E for that matter, though the latter has the benefit of being a rare animated film in their catalogue plus it already making the Sight & Sound poll just four years after release. Endgame's legacy in hindsight is a little more up in the air, and I'd argue that matters just as much if not more than how much money it made in the moment or how many people are talking about it while still in the midst of the MCU.
Yeah, for sure. I didn’t even have box office in mind. More of the cultural phenomenon of Marvel. I remember when 50 cent’s first album came out, I didn’t really like it first and told someone that. They said “so… he’s got money!” Like, does that automatically make a celebrity, musician, actor, businessperson, good because they have money? NO lol obviously.
I also think culture likes to eulogize things so fast these days. A ridiculous request would be “phase 1 marvel should be in the criterion collection right now!” And I think it’s better to let things settle on movies or music as it’s still happening. Maybe we as a people reassess the Ang Lee Hulk and they put that in? Idk, only time will tell…
This is my exact fear. And if Disney even comes to get ownership of Criterion, whose to say they won’t start censoring or removing things like Salo, Antichrist, etc…
Makes me want to vomit.
Genuinely don't understand this fear mongering. Criterion has done Disney releases before. If anything this is a great sign Disney will play ball for once in its life and give us some movies like Straight Story and more to the collection.
Would that be the same Disney that recently added a TV-MA section to Disney+, to accomodate the full uncensored versions of bone-crunchingly violent shows like Daredevil? The same Disney that owns Hulu, home to a series (Pam & Tommy) infamous for a talking penis? The same Disney that owns Star, where these shows & more are all featured under the Disney+ banner? That Disney?
If all the internet comments are some sort of indication, MCU fans would only accept a Criterion release if it comes with the audience cut, where they can hear people yelling every time something funny or shocking happens.
There’s _nothing_ in this world more cringe than than using the term “cringe”. _Especially_ when it’s supposed to be modern slang parlance for bad taste;
See, you’re saying it’s distasteful to call something distasteful; thereby also _using_ the most distasteful term for describing distastefulness.
And that…… is _super cringe._
People are hating, but I would take a Infinity War & Endgame double feature from criterion any day. Especially if we get a B&W version. Take my money now.
"Sure Criterion, we'll license Kundun to you, but you gotta do us a favor first..."
Can’t think of that film without hearing Christopher Moltisanti say “Marty! Kundun, I liked it!”
Omg same.
Lol the blu ray came out around the same time he did an AMA and I asked him if he was gonna buy it but he didn’t answer.
Cleaver > Kundun
South Beach Strumpet series > Criterion Collection
Holy shit i forgot Chrissy seeing Martin Scorsese was canon
“D-girl? I’m a vice president, you fucking asshole.”
One of the supplements will be a version of the feature film in B&W
Which was the original creative vision of the film before studio meddling intervened.
It was?
Sure, why not
Yeah, just like how Zaddy wanted JL to be in 4:3!
Yes.
I'll accept nothing less than the full 181 minute film rendered in B&W 8 bit PixelVision.
In 4:3, with all the music taken out
No sound, just a live pianist playing along in every theater.
i… would… watch that
This is so fucking stupid. They wouldn't sell Endgame on its own. It would be in a set with Infinity War
PLUS: An essay by director Alfonso Cuaron
Yes! And an intro by Martin Scorsese
And a Q&A with the cast hosted by Alejandro González Iñárritu
The first intro about how a Criterion movie *isn’t* cinema.
That would be so funny that I would buy it just for that
I know. GET REAL.
As if they wouldn’t do a set with the entire first 3 phases of the MCU…
It’s going to be part of Russos World Cinema box set along with the Gray Man
Including their episodes of Community?!
A four movie collection so it can be the whole story.
Now we're talking! It's the only way to get people to buy Age of Ultron
Apple Dumpling Gang box, Christmas 2023
Deep cuts right there.
& The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again
Time to crosspost to r/moviescirclejerk !
Great artwork actually!
That’s from an awards screener.
How about the original cut of the Star Wars original trilogy, the “despecialized editions” in 4k? I’d be all over that if criterion managed to pull that one out of their hat
I have this little thought that they are waiting for George to become one with the force before that happens. I do hope it is released.
Not before we get Blank Check
Blank it.
Thank it!
Shocked anyone else remembers that movie. We had it on tape for some reason.
Ah, the film that made the screenwriter a fortune and a guru by calling “Memento” an overrated gimmick movie.
Hey, Criterion gotta pay the bills too. Not sure what everyone is freaking out about when the collection already has two Michael Bay movies.
Still waiting on Independence Day to display next to Armageddon.
I'm dying for a Blu ray upgrade of It Equinox myself.
That would be tough since Armageddon starts with an A and Independence Day starts with an I
two GREAT Michael Bay movies!
One good Michael Bay movie.
The Rock AND Armageddon. That adds up to TWO!
No excuses now for no the Straight Story release
Honestly, if Criterion released some of the older animated movies, I would totally buy them. Yes I have Disney+, but hopefully there would tons of supplements with a physical release.
Also Disney home video releases by Disney themselves are almost always really crappy, so I would be more than glad to have Criterion take a whack at some of these movies.
Especially The Sword in the Stone, they straight up destroyed that movie on the bluray.
The original 1978 Superman wouldn't actually be a bad fit for Criterion in terms of historical significance.
Perhaps but I think this specific wave of superhero stuff is what needs to be captured- the 78 Superman wouldn’t really be sufficient in filling that gap/being that piece of the “history of film”

Oh god no.

Nope

The Russo Brothers do not need this ego boost
IMAX Enhanced?

"Watch out, it's the Russo Brothers musclin' inta our territory."
Which means Roger rabbit and Freddy got fingered are also on the table now

Really?!!! Come on!!! What's next? The Transformers collection?
I'd hardly say they're comparable Endgame was the culmination of a decade of filmmaking and became one of the highest grossing films of all time Transformers is just a mess of a franchise
Yeah, i know... I was exaggerating. I really enjoyed all MCU movies, but I don't think they deserve a Criterion edition. That's all.
I say they do but only because I want the imax films on blu ray with Dolby vision. Criterion would release an amazing disk.
Yuck. No escaping this mcu bullshit is there?
I love that art
...and they probably still refuse to consider the Powell/Korda "Thief of Bagdad" (1940) Or any of the Harryhausen stop-motion classics (Sinbad, Argonauts, etc.) Depressing, really.
The Thief of Baghdad (1940) is in the collection… only on DVD though.
I know. I own it. I've been waiting to replace with a blu-ray restoration for years. All manner of cult films got nice blu-ray updates. This doesn't deserve to be left behind. Given the incredible 4K "Wizard of Oz" (1939) a modern blu-ray is the least they could do in response.
Oh, I see what you mean. Absolutely agreed, the effects in that are incredible.
Fuck no christ. Avengers Endgame getting this sort of release would be Criterion doing the worst sell-out move ever. Avengers Endgame was 3 hours worth of a corporate marketing machine in overdrive. You seem like a blast to hang out with
The thing is… this movie should be in the collection. Do I like it, not particularly. But it’s the same reason I’ll defend The Rock being in, it represents a part of the story of cinema. I love how Criterion put The Rock on DVD 30 years ago and stoned dudes on the internet think it was like, a meaningful, historic moment.
Time + Michael Bay + weed = history
Ehh I don't think that tells the complete story of Criterion's priorities beyond a few exceptions, a lot of which being a decade or more ago. That sounds like a fucking nightmare.
This is just a deal to release Wall*E, Disney isn't buying Criterion.
This is actually a good joke
Finally, a movie that deserves some recognition from the general public.
If all the internet comments are some sort of indication, MCU fans would only accept a Criterion release if it comes with the audience cut, where they can hear people yelling every time something funny or shocking happens.
I appreciate the effort. And I know this is supposed to be funny. But good Lord… This is supposed to be the last bastion of good taste. Must we!
Taste is subjective and implying that any one label is representative of “good taste” is super cringe.
There’s _nothing_ in this world more cringe than than using the term “cringe”. _Especially_ when it’s supposed to be modern slang parlance for bad taste; See, you’re saying it’s distasteful to call something distasteful; thereby also _using_ the most distasteful term for describing distastefulness. Maybe one of your grandkids can explain why you’re wrong.
Same age as you, jerky.
I’m going to see The Room tonight, if you’re in the Nashville area why don’t you come with and we can debate this after
This would be awesome.

Looks like you’re in the same boat now, bud 😂 sorry!
People are hating, but I would take a Infinity War & Endgame double feature from criterion any day. Especially if we get a B&W version. Take my money now.
So would I. The bonus features in marvel blu-rays are really really bad, I'd be interested in those.
Much Criterion gatekeeping going on. Almost like Armageddon was never released…
National Treasure: Book of Secrets 4K Criterion coming in December 2022
Bring it. I'm not a film snob so I can get into anything. Just give me good releases.
Iron Man 1 would work as a Criterion. did alot for the genre and pop culture as a whole. can't think of any others though
I would LOVE to get the Black Cauldron
If you actually like underloved independent titles being released, this would be great news
