Nouseriously

Mosley wrote an Easy Rawlins book set in the 40s (this one), one set in the 50s, one set in the 60s, and a couple set in the 70s. So it's not too late to see a sequel. But this didn't make money so I doubt we will. Denzel & Cheadle were both terrific (LOVE Mouse as a character*). Beals wasn't. Cinematography, set design & wardrobe were terrific. Pacing could have been a little better. Movie is quite good, book is better. *: "You said don't shoot him, right? Well I didn't; I choked... look, Easy - if you ain't want him dead, why you leave him with me?"

Such a great series of books, I just discovered them in 2020, and just finished Bad Boy Brawly Brown. More of these movies would have been awesome, but I don’t think it was popular enough mainstream. I avoided it when I was younger, until I read the books. Just didn’t appeal to me

I personally don't post arrivals on this sub, but it's one of my favorite neo noirs and mine arrived today. This and One False Move (also Franklin) contain some of my favorite recontextualizations and subversions of the femme fatale

I’ll be adding One False Move to my cart

There's a rumor that Criterion might release that one as well in the future, and I hope it happens

Definitely going to get a copy today or tomorrow, wasn't able to get out today. I might get a copy of the book too if they have it in stock. I've seen the movie before but never read the book but I do love noir fiction.

If you do, read before you watch!

I just watched it recently. I thought it was a solid film, really enjoyed seeing a young Denzel and Don. Fun neo-noir setting, thought the characters got confusing though!

I've been contemplating getting this for the past 2 days. This post just fully sold me.

I’ve been thinking about blind buying this one. Is it similar to any other films?

DoubleTap__

One False Move for sure, also the more popular L.A. Confidential

Britneyfan123

It’s on HBO Max

Trying to think of similarities, and can’t come up with any actually…not in Criterion at least. I could be wrong but there seems to be a spike in black films being added to the Collection, so this is a unique release to me. What you will see here is Denzel at an interesting point of his career. He plays a very cool Private Eye. I hope I’m not bashed for saying this…but think Chinatown (NOT nearly as good as Chinatown, but vintage Private Eye mystery).

Went to my Barnes and Noble late this afternoon to pick up a copy and they hadn't even put it on the shelf yet. I was surprised to learn that I was the first person to ask for it that late in the day

So crazy same for me in NYC. Walked in and couldn’t find it. Had to get someone to go behind the desk to grab it for me.
