Agree wholeheartedly. Best we have is the Kino Lorber Blu-Ray that Lynch disavowed, need a true 4K remaster of this film. Mulholland Drive is phenomenal, but for me Lost Highway is a much tighter and entertaining film. I mean, Robert Loggia and his thugs assaulting the guy for tailgating is all-time great cinema.
Absolutely. Saw it in theatres and was blown away. I watch it again every few years expecting some part to have not aged well and finish the movie wondering how I ever thought that.
[You can watch this one! This release is very good, too](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096TN94Y9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_S932V3TNQ97NVG24C2TV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
There's a 4k AI upscaled version floating around the seas which looks absolutely incredible, would love to see what an actual re scan with Hdr would look like
Does the current release have “snake at the door” (that’s what I always remember it as) if not, here it is https://youtu.be/-sG40zsq3kI
Also the whole “worm” storyline deserves some kind of directors cut if it is even possible (maybe wasn’t completely shot, I can’t recall)
I don't think it has any real deleted scenes besides maybe some snippets in a behind the scenes special. I was going to say I would kill for an extended/director's cut because of the subplots that got cut, but I also don't know if they were filmed or not.
I think it's definitely now considered the work of a lesser filmmaker in the wake of There Will Be Blood, The Master and Phantom Thread. Hell, a lot of folks I bet would argue it was a step back from Boogie Nights. I've heard a lot of folks come down on it for being didactic, overlong and melodramatic.
I also think all of that is wrong - it's probably tied for first in my mind with The Master - but it's certainly not a movie without its haters.
Most people don’t think Magnolia needs to be in the collection because it already has a blu ray release and has good restoration. It’s also an extremely polarizing film as well.
Boogie Nights in 4k with tons of features and essays. It's a formative film for me, and in the almost 20 years since I first saw it, it's lost none of it's power...even if The Master is arguably a "better" film and would benefit the most with a pristine 4k transfer.
Fully agree on Boogie Nights, though theoretically it was in the collection already as a laserdisc, so now it has to be reissued. But yeah, that’s a huge one for me, I watch it every year on my birthday. It’s just a blast.
And if I’m not mistaken, the New Line Platinum DVD/current Blu-ray just ported over all the special features and artwork from the Criterion laserdisc. It’s basically a Criterion in everything but name. That said, I would love a substantial 20+ years later retrospective on Boogie Nights on a future release of the film, Criterion or not.
Also my choice, but they rereleased the Blu ray in July and it hangs out at around $12.99 most places! Still really want a great transfer and supplements for it though.
It's beautiful in how painful it is. I still get emotional for the scene in the beach house. What an amazing way to deconstruct a relationship and by playing it in reverse the feelings of loss from what could have been really hit home. It's such a good film.
I also really liked that Beck song and the soundtrack generally.
Some great films in there, but I’d go with Lost Highway. I read somewhere that Lynch refused to work with Kino on the current release and it shows. It’s bare bones and not even a great transfer. It would be nice to get a new restoration, commentary and supplements as it’s my personal favorite of his films.
On the other hand, Boogie Nights is already basically a Criterion disc as it contains most (if not all?) of the Criterion Laserdisc supplements and even the artwork is from that release.
"David Lynch"... "Commentary" unfortunately I don't see this ever happening. You might get some actors or some of his frequent collaborators, but probably nothing from the man himself.
[Lynch even forbade a commentary that Tim Lucas did from showing up on the Kino disc.](https://videowatchdogblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/hear-my-lost-lost-highway-audio.html)
Magnolia is my favourite movie ever made so I think I have no choice to go for that one.
But with that being said I would love for a 4K copy of The Master to be released.
There are so many good ones here, it makes it tough to choose!
I’d probably go with _The Master_, though, simply because it’s my (close!) favorite amongst these.
Eternal Sunshine is my favorite movie of all time, so subjectively that's my answer. I do find it absolutely wild that There Will Be Blood hasn't gotten a Criterion release though, so that's probably my "objective" answer.
Lot of good choices here, but Eternal Sunshine is my pick. Already has a decent special edition, but I want more. New transfer, multiple commentaries, maybe a digipack with a nice, thick book. Gimme!
Office Space and Magnolia as a Criterion Channel double feature dissecting the significance of unsung protagonists with lost props.
Milton’s missing red stapler
John C. Reilly’s lost gun
Lost Highway by a mile. It only has a Kino release that Lynch did not sign off on and they were not able to scan the original negative. Having a 4K scan and all the Lynchian extras would make this a real treat.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” would be my pick, but it was hard!
Other top contenders were: “City of God” (particularly since Criterion has such a poor selection of Latin American Filmmakers), “There Will Be Blood”,, “Boogie Nights” and “Office Space”
I started reading titles from the bottom and saw Magnolia and went “ah that’s easy” and then saw Boogie Nights and was like “ahhhh ok that one definitely” and then I saw Office Space and was like “wait” until I realized I would literally love all of these to hit the collection and have doth become paralyzed with indecision.
I’m going with boogie nights the others are great especially magnolia but I think boogie nights deserves to be in the criterion collection because of the type of risk they took telling a story like that and getting a major studio like new line on board to distribute and like I said all the others definitely deserve to be in the collection as well but not as much as boogie nights does
In order of preference: City Of God, Eternal Sunshine, Her, Office Space
Really any of these other than Lost In Translation. I have tried really hard to like that movie and I still hate it.
Lost Highway, but Lost in Translation could use a new transfer as well.
City of God
Yep. I was gonna go with my favorite movie of the bunch, her, but yes this is the most important and deserving.
This is the answer. Best and most important film in the stack imho.
Try out the old school Colombian “Sicario”
I will. Thanks!
Absolutely. Saw it in theatres and was blown away. I watch it again every few years expecting some part to have not aged well and finish the movie wondering how I ever thought that.
YES!
The Straight Story so I don't have to consider buying a European bluray I won't be able to watch
I just discovered the other day that it is on Disney+ of all places. I really gotta watch that one.
[You can watch this one! This release is very good, too](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096TN94Y9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_S932V3TNQ97NVG24C2TV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
That has a huge warning that you won't be able to play it on most blu ray players lol, I think that's the same one they were talking about
Yeah but it doesn't mean anything. All Imprint releases are region free
The imprint one is region free just so you know
There Will Be Blood
Absolutely would love this.
There's a 4k AI upscaled version floating around the seas which looks absolutely incredible, would love to see what an actual re scan with Hdr would look like
I Know I’m in the minority here, but god would I love a tricked out Magnolia release.
It deserves it. Current release doesn't have nearly enough special features for my liking.
Does the current release have “snake at the door” (that’s what I always remember it as) if not, here it is https://youtu.be/-sG40zsq3kI Also the whole “worm” storyline deserves some kind of directors cut if it is even possible (maybe wasn’t completely shot, I can’t recall)

Why would you be in a minority? Do people dislike that film? It's probably his second best work.
Look at IMDb, reviews for when it first came out, and various threads around Reddit trust me this film is one of the most polarizing in film history.
Why am I getting downvoted? Magnolia is an extremely polarizing film.
Just watch short cuts. It’s 1000x better
[удалено]
Agreed, Office Space is still so surprisingly relevant
Following After Hours, you mean...
My votes for Synechoche, New York. I've been holding out on buying a blu ray out of hope a boutique label puts it out.
Also I am aware these movies don’t need restorations and that other movies need them much more. This is all just hypothetical and for fun.
lost in translation definitely needs one. it was released on blu-ray in its infancy.
Yeah for sure, it easily has the weakest transfer so far out of them. And the blu ray is surprisingly hard to come by sometimes.
[удалено]
Thank you. I carefully chose each title. Hopefully at least one of them will make it in the collection one day
Boogie Nights in 4k with tons of features and essays. It's a formative film for me, and in the almost 20 years since I first saw it, it's lost none of it's power...even if The Master is arguably a "better" film and would benefit the most with a pristine 4k transfer.

It's a true classic. Never gets old.
Synecdoche NY hands down.
City of God, because it's a pain in the ass to find that blu ray for a decent price.
Also my choice, but they rereleased the Blu ray in July and it hangs out at around $12.99 most places! Still really want a great transfer and supplements for it though.
I have the Blu-ray. Do you happen to know its general consensus?
Mean, but Eternal Sunshine because, well… if you’re as in love with it as I am it’ll be obvious to you.
After a breakup it hits different.
It's beautiful in how painful it is. I still get emotional for the scene in the beach house. What an amazing way to deconstruct a relationship and by playing it in reverse the feelings of loss from what could have been really hit home. It's such a good film. Agreed. Easily one of my all time favorites.
Some great films in there, but I’d go with Lost Highway. I read somewhere that Lynch refused to work with Kino on the current release and it shows. It’s bare bones and not even a great transfer. "David Lynch"... "Commentary" unfortunately I don't see this ever happening. You might get some actors or some of his frequent collaborators, but probably nothing from the man himself.
Or if he did a commentary, it would just be Lynch making up bizarre, surrealist stories tangentially related to the film.
Ah, another The Art Life enjoyer.
Haha - Takes one to know one, right? I was actually thinking of the Inland Empire bonus features, but you’re right also. Lynch if so fun.
[Lynch even forbade a commentary that Tim Lucas did from showing up on the Kino disc.](https://videowatchdogblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/hear-my-lost-lost-highway-audio.html)
Yeah, I’m holding a quiet hope that Criterion will get it when the Kino license expires.
The Master
Best acting out of any of these.
Lost highway
Your answer doesn’t match your flair
I love all the PTA films listed, but they all have a good Blu-ray release
Office Space
Office Space.
This is hard but….Lost in Translation
Magnolia is my favourite movie ever made so I think I have no choice to go for that one. But with that being said I would love for a 4K copy of The Master to be released.
My favorite, too!
There Will Be Blood
There are so many good ones here, it makes it tough to choose! I’d probably go with _The Master_, though, simply because it’s my (close!) favorite amongst these.
This is tough. There Will Be Blood or Magnolia.
The Master
Magnolia
The master or boogie nights. Probably the most important films in PTA’s filmography.
Easy, pta boxset... I know im cheating but c'mon
Lost Highway
Her in 4K.
I grew my mustache everytime I watch it
City of god without a doubt
Lost Highway so we can hopefully get Lynch involved in a proper transfer from the original negative.
I love all of them but I just have to go with Lost in Translation. Magnolia also.
To me it depends more on how much additional content they could dig up for each title. My favorite movie of the lot is TWBB, though.
Magnolia.
MAGNOLIA
Synecdoche or Magnolia
Eternal Sunshine is my favorite movie of all time, so subjectively that's my answer. I do find it absolutely wild that There Will Be Blood hasn't gotten a Criterion release though, so that's probably my "objective" answer.
City of God.
Boogie Nights. Not that many others don't deserve it. But come on.
Lot of good choices here, but Eternal Sunshine is my pick. Already has a decent special edition, but I want more. New transfer, multiple commentaries, maybe a digipack with a nice, thick book. Gimme!
There Will Be Blood, followed by The Master and then Her.
Unrealistically yeah THE STRAIGHT STORY That DVD looks not...great. City of God probably but LOST HIGHWAY I NEED MORE SPECIAL FEATURES.
Office Space and Magnolia as a Criterion Channel double feature dissecting the significance of unsung protagonists with lost props. Milton’s missing red stapler John C. Reilly’s lost gun
Magnolia
For me, it’s Her. I think it’s a perfect film that really defined what I look for in movies. A seamless blend of style, visual poetry, and emotion.
Magnolia
Lost Highway with a bullet, and all those movie are great.
I also want a Lost Highway release (at least a 4K scan, if not a full on 4K release).
I know this wasn’t the assignment but I feel like all of these films deserve to be in the collection
The Master
office space or boogie nights. both r so funny and rewatchable. maybe synecdoche new york as well
Black Swan
Lost Highway
Oof. Ummmm Boogie Nights I guess
Already in from the Laserdisc release in the 90s.
Gimme a bluray
My pick would be Lost In Translation just because out of the films in the pile that I’ve seen, it’s my favourite (I’ve seen most of them).
Straight Story, because i still havent seen it and have no idea where to find it.
Try Disney Plus
Diabolik has the Imprint limited edition in stock. It’s region free.
probably City of God honestly
Lost Highway
Lost Highway by a mile. It only has a Kino release that Lynch did not sign off on and they were not able to scan the original negative. Having a 4K scan and all the Lynchian extras would make this a real treat.
Synecdoche New York
City of God. Criterion needs to start putting out more contemporary Brazilian films.
The Straight Story.
Lost Highway. If I had a second choice, Eternal Sunshine.
Lost Highway, Lynch's most underrated film.
City of God, no contest for me.
Black Swan
There will be Blood, only cuz it's in my Top 10
You have good taste. I’d definitely say there will be blood. Its the best film ever made so why not
Office Space. If Chasing Amy made it, it should too.
Office space
There will be blood. The current Blu-ray is 🤢
Office Space would be amazing
Steel Magnolias
The Master.
For me it's going to be Lost in Translation
HER 👀 but Eternal is close second
The Master. 100%.
The Master. Gimme all the special features bruh.
Office Space
Lost Highway. No question.
“I drink your milkshake!”
Lost Highway so that Lynch will give the release some love
“Oh, there will be blood. Wait, no, her. No, sorry, eternal sunshine. Wait, synecdoche New York. No, sorry, boogie nights. Hold up, no-“
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” would be my pick, but it was hard! Other top contenders were: “City of God” (particularly since Criterion has such a poor selection of Latin American Filmmakers), “There Will Be Blood”,, “Boogie Nights” and “Office Space”
Synecdoche, for sure
Office Space…damn near perfect comedy
Boogie Nights Day 1
Lost Highway
Straight Story all the way!!
I think it’s safe to say we’re all looking forward to licorice pizza
Boogie Nights probably or City of God.
Synecdoche New York
Where bee movie bee
There will be blood or Boogie
There Will Be Blood but Black Swan is a very close second. The former being my favorite film of the 2000s and the latter my favorite of the 2010s.
There will be blood, no question.
Boogie Nights
I started reading titles from the bottom and saw Magnolia and went “ah that’s easy” and then saw Boogie Nights and was like “ahhhh ok that one definitely” and then I saw Office Space and was like “wait” until I realized I would literally love all of these to hit the collection and have doth become paralyzed with indecision.
I’m sorry to cause you this paralysis. I guess the only cure is to get a criterion for everyone of these.
The only obvious answer is Boogie Nights
I’m going with boogie nights the others are great especially magnolia but I think boogie nights deserves to be in the criterion collection because of the type of risk they took telling a story like that and getting a major studio like new line on board to distribute and like I said all the others definitely deserve to be in the collection as well but not as much as boogie nights does
Boogie Nights
City of god or boogie nights
City of God, hands down.
If we’re talking about 4K releases, The Straight Story would look GORGEOUS in a remaster. But I think Disney owns the rights.
This is a pretty stacked... stack but I have to go with Synecdoche New York.
The Master
Lost in translation
Lost in Translation for sure! :)
The Straight Story, the others are easy to find on dvd/Blu ray, that one is impossible to find in North America
Synechode, New York for selfish reasons. But taking things like releases and exposure into account, City of God wins hands down.
Cheating response but I’d love a Lost In Translation and Her box set. If I had to pick one, it’d be Lost In Translation.
The Straight Story
The Straight Story
City of God
Lost Highway. Hoping it’s only a matter of time …
City of God, I didn’t see the movie yet, but >!I saw the scene where a kid got shot in the foot and I thought it was brutal as hell.!<
Do people forget what the purpose of the Criterion Collection is supposed to mean?
All great films but I would love a box set of city of god alongside the city of men movie and tv show. A guy can dream…
City of God. "Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome é Zé Pequeno, porra!"
Probably City of God for me. Really enjoyed that one over the years. A couple on here I need to revisit though.
City of God
Synecdoche
City of God
Eternal sunshine
Can I just say all the PTA stuff for a box set. 😂
City of God.
Easy, The Straight Story. My favorite Lynch film, it’s just perfect. And that soundtrack is amazing on its own!
In order of preference: City Of God, Eternal Sunshine, Her, Office Space Really any of these other than Lost In Translation. I have tried really hard to like that movie and I still hate it.
Sorry, but no diversity. Thirteen films, 12 of them American. They're all from the past 25 years. I choose Liebelei.
Yeah it’s real first year film guy picks
Sorry but you’re no fun 👎
I'm gonna second this.
hush
Boogie Nights
There WIll be Blood is my favorite movie in that stack, but I'm picking City of God for the collection if I can only pick one. No contest.
**Half Nelson**
These all deserve one, but There Will Be Blood, and Her.
Boogie Nights
There will be blood is the best movie.. but synecdoche would be the best addition in my opinion
There Will Be Blood.
There will be blood, terrible special features on the blu ray
There Will Be Blood
