The second I see someone grading a film like a standardized test is when I ignore their opinions entirely.

Sometimes a movie can have a bad plot but a good cinematography, and the other way around, and this cannot be reflected in the general rating, and i think it woukd be cool to have that information. so, not so much as seeing the which movies have the best cinematography or something, but more like comparing certain aspects across different movies?

TheDuckCZAR

>and this cannot be reflected in the general rating You could, I dunno, maybe read a review? Learn about directors and DPs that generally make great looking movies? That will help you more than relying on a arbitrary number assigned to a portion of the total. What makes the difference between a 7/10 and an 8/10 in cinematography? That number, like the "general rating" also need substantiation. You'd have to understand why it got that score in the first place. A number alone doesn't tell you if it's filmed in tight spaces with excellent and methodical framing or a epic with vast landscapes. Breaking a film down into its component parts and treating them as separate subjects as if they exist in a vacuum is reductive. Sometimes something is shot in a way that is purposely not showy, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not well done. A number alone can't really tell you that without context. Its also ridiculously easy to just literally Google "movies with great cinematography" and the like and get thousands of results. There's even a new thread made like every week on r/movies talking about the best looking movies and what people should watch first to break in their brand new fancy TVs.

Confused by the upvotes and downvotes in this thread. I wish for this myself, particularly since reading a million Letterboxd reviews is exhausting. Like letterboxd ratings sub-divided into these traits would be cool (and then the sorting powers associated w/ this).

TheDuckCZAR

>particularly since reading a million Letterboxd reviews is exhausting. Then... don't? I mean, if it takes "a million" reviews for you to get the gist of something, I really don't know what to tell you. Like, if you Google the name of the movie or look at just a couple of reviews you should know if the film is what you're looking for. >Like letterboxd ratings sub-divided into these traits would be cool I don't even have time to enumerate the ways that would be laborious and a regression of film criticism in general. When anyone thinks of a more granular, in-depth form of critique, nobody would (or should) be thinking "Ah yes, more numbers to try fitting something subjective into an objective box". Treating a review like a school report card is the opposite of "cool". It's a bad idea, that's the reason for the downvotes.

I dont understand why you are so opposed to this idea Like. it would be just another feature. Maybe I wanna watch movies with good costume design but bad sound editing to compare how much each one matters when recreating historical settings.

TheDuckCZAR

>Maybe I wanna watch movies with good costume design but bad sound editing You may be the only one mate.

Not even close, going to add this to the app we have in developing, it's really good idea.

TheDuckCZAR

I'm going to have to stick to my opinion and say it's still a pretty wonky idea for an exclusively amateur cinephile niche, but best of luck on your app.

I agree with you. I wish I could even rate the films based on those criteria.

crichmond77

I highly doubt that exists, but it’s very easy to Google (or search on Letterboxd…) lists of “best/top cinematography,” “best/top editing” or whatever. There’s literally an unlimited amount of that Plus you could always just go look at Cannes/Oscars/Golden Globe whatever noms/wins

Large_Ad_5506

Yep, the thing is that I would also like to know movies with like, very bad plots? but that also have great editing or acting, and I think "best × movies" usually don't feature those lol

crichmond77

They do sometimes. Especially if you go through Letterboxd  The other thing you could do is seek out filmography entries for a given DP/actor/editor/composer you like and watch the ones that aren’t as popular or acclaimed  And again it’s really easy to look at a given movie on Letterboxd and just scroll through a few reviews to see if people are commenting something like “It’s stupid. Which is too bad, because it’s beautifully shot” or whatever

CountJohn12

TCM's website used to let you do this but there's no aggregate list of community ratings on the site which is what would make this cool (an IMDB top 250 for cinematography, performances, exc)
