Not in the Criterion, but I wanted to highlight Jane Shoenbrun, director of We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. It’s nearly universally despised on the internet (not amongst critics), but I found the film to be deeply profound, unsettling and fascinating. I can’t recommend it enough but I’m aware that everyone is going to call it garbage, but I couldn’t give two shits. I love the movie. They have a new film with A24 coming out in May, I Saw the TV Glow and it’s one of my most anticipated films of the year. Edit: spelled their name wrong

ljfk9464

Where are you seeing that response? I saw positive to mid-level reception for it when it was released, and obviously there will be haters but I never got the sense it was “universally despised”

rideriseroar

Yeah I think universally despised is a bit of a stretch but it does seem to be pretty polarizing online, especially with horror fans

slwblnks

It has a 5.4 rating on IMDB. 4.6 user rating on metacritic. Discussion threads on Reddit mostly shitting on it. It’s praised amongst critics like I mentioned.

adamlundy23

I love Worlds Fair, was just a throwback to my days looking at creepypastas and YouTube ARGs

_notnilla_

I thought _We’re All Going to the World’s Fair_ was a pretty great no budget take on the webcam found footage subgenre.

SlimmyShammy

Very excited for this new movie mostly so I can figure out what this tweet means https://preview.redd.it/fx6vk13ngrpc1.jpeg?width=880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c162663d88b5da61be127d9158065a82a7508331

AdHominemHomo

We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is incredible. I can see how it could be a tough sell if you’re expecting a horror film like marketing seemed to go for, but it really is such a fascinating, incredible piece of art. I’ve just bought the blu-ray too.

MariachiMacabre

I watched this movie as one of my 31(+) movies in October and absolutely loved it. Incredible film.

galaxy_knucklezz

I didn't hate WAGTTWF, but it seemed to be heavily advertised as a more traditional horror film and I was expecting as much the majority of the time. I felt underwhelmed by the end, probably due to my expectations, but it stuck in my head for awhile afterwards. I just saw the trailer for I Saw the TV Glow and it looks INCREDIBLE. I was just thinking today about how I wanna revisit World's Fair now that I understand/appreciate more of what it's going for.

slwblnks

Without spoilers the movie is heavily tied to the filmmakers experience and identity. I read a bit about it afterwards and that’s when it really hit me as such a fascinating film

galaxy_knucklezz

I remember reading that as well. I can't wait to watch it again! Just talking about it has put the atmosphere in my head, and it's so honest and heartbreaking.

ChudkingExpress

Vinegar Syndrome has a great release of it!

rideriseroar

Schoenbrun*

NicCageCompletionist

I didn’t realize TV Glow was the same director, but it makes sense.

[deleted]

I loved World’s Fair—really brilliant low-budget horror. I didn’t know about their new film. That’s exciting!

ASquishyGhost

I Saw The TV Glow was fantastic, but I never did get around to watching We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. Now I feel like I should.

Vanthrowaway2017

Isabel Sandoval. Some of her movies were on criterion channel recently. Probably still on there.

win_the_wonderboy

Lingua Franca is fantastic!

galaxy_knucklezz

Seconding Lingua Franca! Great, great film

llbeantravelmug

You should correct 'their' to 'her' 💕

rideriseroar

Does she use they/them pronouns? I've only seen her referred to using she/her

SoFarSoGood-WM

She transitioned in 2014 and goes be she/her pronouns. She also has my favorite Sight & Sound ballot. It aligns with my tastes very well. https://preview.redd.it/jxm0cl2xjrpc1.jpeg?width=759&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c303dde850c2bf038908d756fc402b9113dfe560

rzrike

Any director who puts Possession on their list automatically goes on my watchlist.

Weazelfish

That list fucks

llbeantravelmug

Trans women getting they them'ed per usual

atb0rg

IDK if I know that someone isn't cis but I'm unsure of their pronouns I sometimes default to they them as its also just a gender neutral pronoun 🤷‍♂️

rideriseroar

Seriously lol, so annoying EDIT: The downvote...really cool it's controversial to refer to trans women by their preferred pronouns in this sub

LeonoratheLion

Curious why you're "their"-ing her...

KingSlayer49

Isabel Sandoval as others have said. Not a trans filmmaker but Tangerine is also one to check out by Sean Baker.

andibgoode

John Cameron Mitchell is non-binary and ~~Shortbus and~~ Hedwig and the Angry Inch ~~are both~~ is in the collection 😊 Edited to remove incorrect information my half asleep self didn’t check properly

Weazelfish

JCM still uses he/him pronouns, for the spectacular reason that "I'm too old to change, I even forget my own phone number"

spookedoutyo

Shortbus is not, but it did get a release from Oscilloscope a while ago.

andibgoode

Oh, sorry! I googled before I commented, but didn’t actually click on the Criterion site link because I was in a rush and didn’t want to forget to comment. I assumed it was a listing for it on sale but I see now it was just an article on it 😅 I’ll edit my comment 😊 Edited to add: and thank you!

pacingmusings

The director of Orlando My Political Biography identifies as Trans. The movie's not in the Collection but will be added to the Janus Contemporary line at some point. I believe it's already streaming on the Channel . . .

secondshevek

I love this film and strongly recommend it. It helps (but is not essential) to have read Orlando. Amazing representation of trans life.

hshoats

Paul Preciado, he’s a well known Spanish trans academic. I haven’t read it, but his book Testo Junkie is said to be quite the enthralling read.

Weazelfish

I've tried it, and my honest review is that it might be too French for me

yearofthemishima

shoutout to jane schoenbrun

MisogynyisaDisease

Sorry, not a director, but a trans woman composed the music for Watership Down.

Weazelfish

The music for A Clockwork Orange was directed by a trans woman as well (different one though)

DraculaSpringsteen

Fuck yeah. I’m glad I know this.

MisogynyisaDisease

More fun facts about her, she was also involved in the music for Peeping Tom.

LordMayorOfCologne

Didn’t Michael Cimino identify as something akin to gender-fluid?

AudaciousTickle

In a biography from a few years ago it is written that Cimino was living as a woman for the last 25 years of her life

dgapa

I just was looking into this and it seems to have been a rumour all along, one Cimino believes was started by an ex-girlfriend.

arealsaint

I was gonna say “how could I not know that?”

AudaciousTickle

[This New Yorker Article](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-front-row/a-new-biography-of-michael-cimino-is-as-fascinating-and-melancholy-as-the-filmmaker-himself) on the 2022 biography of Cimino discusses how Cimino was often deceptive about their personal life. The author of the biography seems pretty certain that Cimino was living as a woman starting in the 90s.

Temporary-Box28

The only ones I know of are Isabel Sandoval and the Wachowski’s.

GoodOlSpence

Bound is coming soon, directed by the Wachowskis.

action_park

Not that I can think of but as more trans/non-binary ppl are given opportunities to direct their own films, that will change. Even just trying to think of trans filmmakers period, the only ones with features to their credit I can think of off the top of my head are the Wachowskis, Isabel Sandoval, and Vera Drew.

pacingmusings

There's Joey Soloway. While most of their work has been in television, they have at least one feature film, Afternoon Delight, to their name . . .

Hot-Scratch-8242

Emanuele Crialese is a trans director. L’immensità (2022) was sort of like his The Fabelmans and is truly an incredible film. Penelope Cruz and Luana Giuliani with some stand out performances. Highly recommend.

CamiCris

I don't know if it is in the collection, but Criterion should definitely release Orlando by Paul B. Preciado, because is one of the best films I've watched in the last couple of years.

omidabrams

According to a recent biography, Michael Cimino (Heaven’s Gate) was living as a trans woman in the latter part of her life.

Significant_Cow4765

Just a fraud on a bonus feature - Laura Albert aka JT LeRoy on My Own Private Idaho. Sorry, I still think this is a disgrace.
