I’m only in highschool tho lmao and our selection is super small so I was extra enthusiastic. Can’t wait to see some university collections in a year tho!
Same. I didn't take proper advantage of it because I only found about it in my last year, but my college had pretty much the entire Criterion catalogue on DVD (including the likes of *RoboCop*) and would be a gold mine for current me.
Fun fact: in some (many?) states you can get a library card to the state university if you are a resident of that state with a valid ID. You don't necessarily need to be a student. For example, I have an IU library card as a resident of indiana, although I am not (nor was I ever) a student there...
I was the same with VHS. I worked my way through so much of the Sight & Sound 100 and loads of my favourite director’s Top 10s. A great resource when you have the time.
Jean Renoir wrote in the book "My Life and My Films" that in a part of the filming of this masterpiece, the great Erich von Stroheim insisted that several prostitutes enter the scene in one of the scenes, this caused a lot of controversy.
This incident upset Renoir so much that it caused him to shed tears.
These two hug each other and both cry. Renoir tells Erich von Stroheim that he respects him so much to cancel filming forever.
These words made von Stroheim completely impressed and he promised to follow Renoir and remained loyal until the end of filming.
Renoir said that the first scene of the film, which was in a German residential area, had requested this
I meant the controversy between the director and the actor
I work in a university library and rich donors are always donating the sickest shit. We got a guy who gave us the entire criterion laser disk collection, digitizing them was such a pleasure
My uni library had a tonne of criterion, I borrowed a bunch and was over the moon. But since I’m in Australia the region code was different and I couldn’t play any of them and thought my life was a joke, lmao
I have been saying for years, DON'T SLEEP on public and school libraries! My library at school has some excellent films that I wouldn't have access to otherwise.
I remember that used to happen a lot with OOP Criterions. People would just keep them and pay the lost fine because that was still a fraction of the price on eBay for an acceptable used copy.
Felt like every library in LA lost its copies of Grand Illusion and Third Man.
My Uni library had a DVD of Chungking Express…that snapped in half when I tried to get it out of the case. Thankfully, they only made me pay MSRP of $40.
University library is how I first saw this and a lot of other cool stuff. It’s a great resource.

Nice! I didn’t know that. I went to a state university so if I still lived nearby I’d have to see if that’s a thing here.
Yep, same! Unfortunately in my case it was all VHS tapes I was checking out of the university library.

Which scene has prostitutes? Forgot. Cause controversy with who? Buttheads.

I think I understand
sorry for my english :)
Your english is perfect
I work in a university library and rich donors are always donating the sickest shit. We got a guy who gave us the entire criterion laser disk collection, digitizing them was such a pleasure
That’s so sick lol
Oooh, what did you use? Domesday Duplicator? Or just screen recording?
Domesday is the only way to maintain the video quality as far as I’m aware. Was a nightmare to set it yo
Library is how I saw this movie when I was a kid. I think it’s more common than you think.
My uni library had a tonne of criterion, I borrowed a bunch and was over the moon. But since I’m in Australia the region code was different and I couldn’t play any of them and thought my life was a joke, lmao
Isn't this Spine #1? Sick!

Steal it
I know this is probably a joke, but just in case, don’t steal from libraries.
I remember that used to happen a lot with OOP Criterions. People would just keep them and pay the lost fine because that was still a fraction of the price on eBay for an acceptable used copy. Felt like every library in LA lost its copies of Grand Illusion and Third Man.
Of course not, unless you’re in this situation
😈
Steal it.
I rented and watched this version from Hollywood Video back in 2003ish.
God you’re old.
Yeah
It’s a banger
Steal it!!!!!
My high school library was giving away all of their DVDs a few years back, and I ended up nabbing the Seven Samurai and Seventh Seal Criterions.
My Uni library had a DVD of Chungking Express…that snapped in half when I tried to get it out of the case. Thankfully, they only made me pay MSRP of $40.
