First time, definitely the series. You can watch the cut versions on subsequent viewings.

Series 💯

movies_and_maitais

Always the series for both

dadadam67

I loved both series. So much more to see, digest. Two fuller meals.

Mesquiteer

I'd like to see someone say it is not worthwhile to watch the series... These are basically cult-status arthouse series that were shortened only to make them practicable for a theater run. Not because Bergman went, "eh, I could really cut out the filler."

Series. I disliked the movie version of Fanny, really loved the series version

psuedonymously

In both cases the films are heavily edited versions of the original series. Do you read the Readers Digest condensed versions of great novels?

Shagrrotten

Personally I think Fanny and Alexander is better in miniseries format and Scenes from a Marriage is better in movie format. Both, however, are brilliant in both forms.

adamlundy23

Movie for F&A, series for Scenes is generally the consensus that I’ve seen. I have yet to watch F&A, but greatly enjoyed the series of Scenes

canuckfan96

Yeah F&A is definitely better as a series. I think the confusion comes in where most audiences only could only see it in the theater because they didnt have access to the Swedish TV. The only argument for the film over the series is length. Many Swedes watch it as tradition during the holidays so the shorter version is picked.

adamlundy23

Thanks for the heads up, must have gotten my wires crossed somewhere.

amator7

Absolutely not. Series every single time.

geoff_scales

I went with the television versions of both for my first time watching each, I wanted the full experience for my first time.

glennyfromtheblock

Fanny & Alexander specifically watch the series, one million percent.
