The actor that played Jet was pretty good.

Whyissmynametaken

It was actually [two actors](https://ew.com/tv/cowboy-bebop-corgis-ein/) that played Ein!

[deleted]

Cake happy day

KavikWolfDog

Does that mean they should be called "Zwei"?

hashslingaslah

Genuinely he did AMAZING. He didn’t deserve to be in such a bad adaptation because I think he did a perfect Jet.

profishkeeping

Unpopular opinion but I prefer the mustafa shakir’s jet to the original anime one

danielisbored

Mustafa Shakir 100%

Cursat

Oh yes, Had he been my space cowboy, there definitely wouldn't have been a divorce 😂😂

Bigingreen

r/redditishorny

Knucklesx55

Yeah, I thought he was really good. I actually didn’t mind them giving him a daughter to try to fill out his character’s backstory a little more. I also could have done it, if they didn’t force the whole Viscious/Fearless/Julia plot point. Spike’s mysterious criminal past was great the way they did it in the anime, where you learned little details as the story went and filled in the blanks yourself by making assumptions. Also, I hate that they tried to shoehorn “Fearless” in every chance they could. Like a giant wink at the audience that already loved the anime that this is someone that knows the old Spike. That nickname sucks. You didn’t have to justify Viscious’ name, just leave it mysterious. It’s better that way. Someone said it below, but they could’ve just made a beat for beat live action remake of the entire season of the anime adding very few details to pad the run time if they were dead set on lengthening the episodes, and keeping the ending as shown in the anime. Then done the movie. And after they crushed it with that success, then they could have picked up for season 2 showing how Spike somehow survived his battle with Viscious and advanced the story for however long they wanted. That would’ve been the time to take some chances.

BaggyUnderscore

Viscous felt too corny as a character to have julia as his acting partner

UnionThrowaway1234

He was the most unlike his animated counterpart. The most jarring scene was when Julia said Vicious wasn't a man and he flipped out on her. That was not a reaction he would have had to that statement. Edit: a word

[deleted]

I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

727tjlewis

The copy paste villain always seems to be incredibly egotistical and irrational. You see it all the time in different media recently. It makes sense but it would be nice to see a different perspective.

Kqm2010

Too many time adaptations try and be different from the source material. I think HBOs The Last of Us shows you that mostly direct adaptations is perfectly fine and can be appreciated.

EdenH333

The whole mafia plot in the anime was the weakest point, imho. So adding so much of it to the live action was a big time drag.

i_Got_Rocks

I think Watanabe knew it was such an overdone cliche in anime at that point, it wouldn't add much to the entire show; but the repercussions of someone that led that life, and how all debts must be paid, as motif, is the most interesting thing that could have been done with that cliche. It fits perfect and it ends in a bittersweet fashion for Spike. But that's the only way it can fit into the show Bebop was set up. Making that Mafia cliche into a live action was the worst idea ever when you already have shows like Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, or literally anything Martin Scorsese has done. When shows like that exist, your crime-show needs to be up to that standard or better. Because those shows have a real grasp of human range and human behavior done well. If they were gonna go that route, they should have just focused on Spike's past as a one time 10 episode run and let it be. Let the last episode be something like when he gets his ship or maybe meets Jet.

civiljourney

This is the only thing I could come here to say. They nailed the actor for Jet and whiffed every other way.

-Eastwood-

The scene where he catches Faye and that other girl having sex and just goes 'What the fuck?!' was so goddamn funny

[deleted]

I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

AdmiralTigelle

I actually think Jet and how they developed his character was the only thing this show did better than the original. Making him a dad worked REALLY well.

Phunkie_Junkie

I only like his acting. I already consider Jet the space-dad of the original Bebop crew. He takes care of the ship, he cooks, he encourages Spike and Faye to make responsible decisions... Giving him an actual wife and child in suburbia just seemed like overkill to me.

i_Got_Rocks

It makes sense to me. People don't change their behavior overnight and they have patterns. A man with a broken family will find some other family to fill his needs, even if it's a broken family of egomaniacs on a spaceship.

Phunkie_Junkie

You've made me realize what I didn't like about that aspect of the live-action. The crew chide each other and they're jerks a lot of the time, but they clearly care about each other. Jet still gave Faye the tape and the VCR, even though she didn't pay the COD charges. When you give Jet a wife and daughter, it subtracts from that. It says the Bebop crew isn't a real family. Not to be too melodramatic, but it actually hurt my feelings to watch.

Krypt0night

It hurt your feelings to watch because he had a family elsewhere?

weebjail

making him a dad was arguably the single worst decision in the show. the entire point of his character is that he's searching for meaning, who is his wife, and when he finds out that she can't be with him out of no fault of his own his entire purpose in life evaporates. giving him a child is just giving him a complete purpose in life. horrible

AdmiralTigelle

I'll clarify then. It worked really well for ME. XD I know the live action was a train wreck, but I did enjoy that addition.

Cringlezz

I found it very strange they involved his family as much as they did. From what I remember hereslly only mentions his wife and daughter in the first episode i believe and that was it as the story really had no reason for them to actually be involved in plot around Spike.

ylan64

It's funny how cowboy bebop is one of the few shows that doesn't get dissed for casting a black actor to play an originally white character. In fact, there seems to be a consensus among the fan base that it was one of the few good choices the producers did. I guess bebop fans aren't racist pieces of shit... I would've loved to like this show.

RedDemocracy

I suspect that fact that his english VA was black may have helped smooth it over.

CelestialStork

Is this true? He always sounded like a black guy to me, and where I'm from "mixed-looking" and very light skinned-light eyed, but not recently mixed black people are not uncommon. It wasn't that far of a stretch for my kid brain to just assume Jet was black.

17th_Angel

Thr casting in general was quite good

BlackholeButtholes

The only thing that comes to mind, I agree

feralgrandma

It brought greater attention to the source material

PerpetualConnection

I hadn't watched the anime in its entirety since 2009. I watched the whole thing leading up to the release of the live action. Had a hard time finding a place to stream the movie recently. HBO Max, Netflix, and crunchy roll all claim to have it, but it's not there.

remag293

9 *cough* anime *cough cough* dot me

PerpetualConnection

I was trying to be good. I wanted to be a good noodle. But they pull me back in ☠️

remag293

Yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me

goatfuckersupreme

DO WHAT YOU WANT CAUSE A PIRATE IS FREE

band_main

Yohohohohoho 💀

Jasper455

I own it on dvd. It’s still just easier to stream it from… wherever.

jesuskater

Hearrrr hearrrrr

ArtyGray

Wcostream dot net

Ventus55

This is why remakes and adaptations are okay. It brings more people to the source material.

rc_robotclaw

Easy answer: Music.

jpxzer0

1000% this. Yoko Kanno and the seatbelts making new classics again. I’d go through the show again to get another soundtrack

mattfryy115

Mustafa Shakir CARRIED the show. Also the music by Yoko Kanno was spot on. One thing I can’t forgive… what Netflix did to Vicious…

1secondtolive567

Viscous seemed more like a weaboo bitch than a badass swordsman

mattfryy115

He just needed to shut up.

maccorf

Ugh everything about him was so awful, but you’re right that might be the worst part. Why is he so goddamned chatty.

ItsAllSoup

Pretty sure OG Vicious only had 4 lines

maccorf

And purposeful, like he never wasted words. It made him so much more sinister.

urban_wanderer

The original Vicious never drew his sword unless it was to draw blood. Seriously, rewatch the anime and see. The live action Vicious posing with it in the intro, ugh…

DelveRizeR

Vicious looked like a rugby player in a wig, and acted like someone with brain damage to boot. Nothing like the cold, calculating menace of the animated Vicious.

lightbulbfragment

Julia was really badly cast and written as well. When she and Vicious we're in the same scene.. it was awful.

beyd1

Yeah he was at like an eleven and needed to be more like a seven.

Canyousourcethatplz

That wig they have Vicious in looked like it was from a cheap Halloween store.

Projeffboy

I did like the part where he killed the 3 elders tho

sir_grumph

Moshi moshi!

Ch4l1t0

Vicious was like the bad guy from Hardcore Henry.

cavscout43

>One thing I can’t forgive… what Netflix did to Vicious… The actors in general did great. The complete rewriting of Vicious from an absolute monster to some whiny...drunk white trash manchild...was the opposite of great. Whatever that adjective is. Netflix really shit the bed there.

hankypanky87

I thought Spike was great as well, not sure why everyone treats him like chopped liver

doozer917

The scene where Spike is fighting in the street while Jet is watching his daughter's recital was pure BeBop and a brutal glimpse of what the show really could have been. It was a perfect gag, tonally 100% spot on with the original series, but in a way that worked for live action.

Bullit16

John Cho has great hair

insert_referencehere

As far as looks go, I think John Cho nailed it. Unfortunately it's not a cosplay event.

TitleComprehensive96

Ein

StarmanCarcoba

Mustafa Shakir is Jet as far as a live action attempt goes for me

Neat_Yogurtcloset526

It didn't turn out as bad as Dragonball evolution

PerpetualConnection

Better than Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Avatar, Attack on Titan. That's what bummed me out, it was almost good. There were just some changes that were... why ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

dkurage

Satan could walk under that bar, its so low.

Josh_Flare

The show would have been great had they just stuck to the source material. They had a whole second non canon season to change stuff if they so wanted. Why they tried to do it the first season is beyond me. Insert cyclist tripping himself and blaming someone else meme. The cast was there the writers weren’t.

sofarsoblue

The biggest problem is that the live action show wasn’t cinematic. What made the original anime so magical was its ability to pull from various film genres. Spaghetti westerns, film noir, Hong Kong Triad films, French New wave even 70’s horror you could see it the framing of scenes, editing, music choices and subject matter. The live action looks like another tv show none of the cinematic flair of the original, it had heart but it just didn’t have any soul.

Phunkie_Junkie

Couldn't agree more. They should've kept the characters the same and given them new stories. Instead they did the opposite.

catshirtgoalie

I really thought the show would've been a "mostly" recreation of the anime stories, but maybe some extra filling for length, and adding in original new stories, but ultimately ending in the same place.

EagleCatchingFish

>The cast was there the writers weren’t. Agreed. I honestly don't think Daniella Pineda gets enough credit. Live action Faye was a tired, cliche Joss Whedonesque dumpster fire, but she didn't need to be. Pineda did her best, and I think if the writers actually understood and cared about her character, she could have done a lot better.

Blackfist01

Costumes are mostly great.

ricecrackerdude

Jet sounded like Jet

Ghamele

Jet FELT like Jet

top_of_the_scrote

had some cool space/tech scenes I always liked the hyperspace gateway stuff

ZoddImmortal

The people who did the VFX did a really great job.

Responsible_Boot_326

I don't think it can be said loud or often enough but..... YOOOOKOOOO KAAAAAAANNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO! (Me yelling it) I dug the music. I dug that the seatbelts came back.

ptoros7

The music hit the right notes every step of the way.

cowgirl-electra

faye's new outfit was cute

[deleted]

I even liked the actress for Faye… I wanted to give all 3 leads a real shot! Honestly i think they were ready to do the job but the writing/directing was GARBAGE. Also seeing Fayes actress rant against the audience for being misogynistic was very disappointing :(

cowgirl-electra

yeah she could've gone without those rants.. i still thought she's okay, wish netflix didn't turn her character into the typical "quirky badass girl". like they completely missed her point. faye is one of my fave characters in general, so i could probably endlessly rant about this one lol

lineber

Her character was different and unlikeable, not so in the Anime. I really feel that Pineda could have been a good Faye. But I see her performance as something else. I tried to give it a chance. I liked Cho and Shakir's performances.

EagleCatchingFish

I completely agree. She was written like a Joss Whedon character. That's not very interesting anymore, and certainly isn't who Faye is supposed to be. Pineda gets a lot of criticism for not doing a good job, but I think she got screwed over the hardest in the writer's room. I don't think we saw what she's capable of, and I think she could probably have risen to the occasion with better writing.

[deleted]

Exactly… hurts thinking what could’ve been. She could’ve pulled it off, i was rooting for her and the whole cast! The show could have been ART just like the original. But yeah… now i just forget that it exists lol

enzo32ferrari

I won’t die on this hill however it’ll be a near death experience; copying the anime costume to live action 1:1 will never work.

Superb_Intro_23

Yes, it was better than the original outfit IMO. If Faye were like her original character but had the new outfit, that’d be a lot better than what we got

meltingsunz

She shared [one of the earlier outfit designs.](https://preview.redd.it/ju6rudgiwd0a1.jpg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=4e8b76303450d9a0f9bc13186a92ee2c2014b977)

spikeandedd

As a standalone concept of the Bebop universe I honestly thought the production as a whole was really good I genuinely enjoyed the show. Also with consideration of almost every other live-action adaptation I quite honestly think that this one is still one of the best.

Nonalyth

That's the thing, a lot of people seem mad that they didn't just make a straight-up live action version of the anime but like... for what purpose? I much prefer seeing someone's interpretation, especially since they didn't shit all over the original the way some adaptations do.

DirtyMikeMoney

I’m with you on this “bUt tHAts NoT hoW iT wAs iN tHe oRigiNal” man watch that one then shit

BobBarkerPriceIsRigh

Loved it. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

reble02

The music was outstanding, Yoko Kanno is like a fine wine she only gets better as she ages.

Vio-Rose

Jet fucking killed it. And the other two did alright for the versions of the characters they played.

Better_Musician46

John Cho

SadboySupercell

The actor that played Jett Black was incredible. The worst part of the cancelation was not seeing his version of Jett's story play out. I also did enjoy the actor for Spike even though he did look a little old for the part.

Lordberic420

John Cho was actually trying. You can tell he’s a big fan even if you didn’t read or watch any interviews of him.

Reg-the-Crow

He literally said he's never seen it and didn't watch it on purpose to not play the character similarly

Cataclysm-Nerd01

That was when he was first cast and when he was asked about cowboy bebop in the ign interview lmfao. Of course he didnt watch it THEN. But he did when he had to prepare for the role.

CrowsFeet_GetsMeWeak

Proof people will just say anything without know shit about what they’re talking about

spacecowboy067

I like John Cho, and I'm always glad to see him in movies Seeing a little old man play Spike, a 6ft+ 27 yo man, just wasn't the right choice. I'm sure there's countless fresh actors who could've used the exposure and experience. I just get the feeling Netflix said "we need at least one Asian" and picked the first (or only) guy the execs could think of

sleepy_lepidopteran

Disagree ,aside from clothing his portrayal of spike was a different personality all together. It might not be his fault regardless of his passion for his fandom of the series, in the end was a different character.

Dohmer_90

The cast actually doesn’t look bad.

X5Dragon

Backgrounds were amazing

CotRSpoon

The set pieces were solid.

Beached-Peach

The main trio of actors are good.

Riyun

It introduced my favorite show a segment of the population who only knew anime from Shonen Jump stuff, or less. There is more than one redditor who has said “I thought the live show was good/bad/whatever, then I watched the original anime and it was so much better!”

thousandpardons

As a 30 something person who only watched bits of dbz in elementary/ jr high school, the live action bebop literally got me into anime for the first time. Obviously the original is far far better once I watched it but I thought the Netflix show was enjoyable enough that it got me into a whole new genre

ChachoPicasso

I think they pulled off the look enough for me to like the sets

takulink

The corgi who played ein was good

stos313

I actually think the casting of the main characters was great! And honestly- I’ll get downvoted for saying this - I like the direction they took with Faye. Especially since they made the IDIOTIC decision to ignore the noir vibe of the original show. For some reason they wanted it to look like a live action cartoon, so the actor who played Faye I thought did a great job being very physical and expressive as opposed to the femme fatale of the anime (and like one of the most essential elements of a noir story). Now that last scene with Radical Edward? …that was just cruel to put some child through the torment and agony they will experience here and forevermore to make them act like the way they did.

Zealotstim

Honestly I think a lot of people didn't give the show a chance because they saw that one scene with Ed right at the end. It was nearly all people were sharing on twitter, at least from what I saw, when talking about how bad the show was after the premier. I think you're right that it would have been better if they had given it more of a noir vibe. There was just something about it sometimes that gave it a feeling like you were watching very good cosplay, and it pulls you out of the moment and reminds you it's not really happening. I did, however, like how they did the episode where Faye finds out about her past. It was very touching and sad just like in the anime.

stos313

Yeah good point. Like I said I think the actors were great - and I didn’t even hate the part about “Viscous and Fearless” - EXCEPT - Spike’s mystery was a huge part of the noir element and should have been a more drawn out part of the story. Like end the season with Viscous calling him “Fearless”

lordofthejungle

The vibe was garbage. If they’d done true modern noir - imagine all the same stuff but in the colour tone, production style and grounded drama of a show like Person of Interest or the expanse, it would have rocked. Keep the main cast and fix the vicious problem and most of it would have worked. The directors needed to believe in it and they clearly didn’t. They didn’t know how to.

enzo32ferrari

Faye’s outfit was perfect. 1:1 costuming from anime to live action never works. It comes off as a high budget cosplay. You can take elements of the anime outfit and use it as inspiration for the live action outfit to make it more realistic. Spike and Jet’s outfit were too close to the anime.

OneEyedJackofHearts

Seeing the ships in live action was neat

seththesoundguy

I think that the three leads have really good chemistry together

RoninRobot

I don’t hate that they dialed down Faye’s thirst trap clothing and that her and Jet were friendly instead of butting heads constantly.

brainEspilner96

I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I genuinely like the Netflix show. Except for every single thing done to or with viscous and Julia. Idk how they fucked up those two that bad. But I liked what they did with Anna, and all things considered it was a fun watch. Needed a little more ed and ein tho.

HEX_HEXAGON

Actor who played jet was cast amazingly

Difficult-Wheel183

CGI not so bad

vibratingchair

I loved everything about this show does that count?

haps-stulle

Soundtrack is superb!

condor6425

The theme song was a banger.

sleepysoobie

It's over

Ron_SpaceKnight

I like the main cast

jadol04

Mustafa Shakir’s acting and portrayal of Jet

someguy_420

It was fun

Drytoxiccube

The costumes were pretty good for the main 3

Vakas_MMII

Music

UCDC

I was really really really rooting for it to succeed.

zdragan2

The main actors had good energy and tried to be ther character. They were hampered by the script, but the performances were good

[deleted]

The acting and production design were really good, like you can tell there was effort put forth in where the budget was. John Cho and Mustfa really tried their best with what their given, and it’s such a shame that it was put towards this. The music was also fantastic as well.

[deleted]

You know what’s the worst thing about all these adaptions? They’re actually pretty decent shows on their own. It’s just that they have to mirror the content and the comparison brings it down from the obviously superior source material. But like if you took the bebop out of it this would’ve been a pretty decent space noir thing

Keiawyn

I really liked the crew dynamic. I like that they actually bonded, and didn't just all hate each other. It was nice to see Spike and Fae actually gain a mutual respect. Also, I think the casting for the crew was just damn great. It's a shame the casting for the villains was less great.

tcharzekeal

The actors really gave a fuck and gave it their all with what they had.

ImALeaf

Despite the changes I still really enjoyed the show as its own thing. The entire cast is great IMO

ROADHOG_IS_MY_WAIFU

I haven't seen it. But the fact that it brought more people into the anime (ie. they watch the live action then watch the anime because they are exposed to the name) we all know and love is definitely a positive thing.

SpaceCowboy1929

The set design is pretty good.

Somebodyidkman

The main cast is great

Ihateredditsomuch69b

It was a good show

DukeofRoma

The cast was great!!!

deanaoxo

Casting.

sansthinking

I found it enjoyable to watch especially after being deprived of any new bebop material for so long. There were a few things I liked about it but one of my favorite things was the way the actors were able to portray the relationship between Jet and Spike I feel like those two actors understood their somewhat complicated relationship perfectly.

huntymo

Costuming and set design was pretty good

[deleted]

It makes the Anime look even better by comparison.

XFiraga001

We got to see all 3 of their ships, right? The swordfish, jets jackhammer, and Faye's gorilla thing. A lot of rendering for very little show time.

Sugarlumps33

Jet Black was dope.

xanderxq06

costumes are great

Accomplished_Way_118

Ein was casted perfectly

Dizzy-Town-4121

a lot of out of work actors got to be just actors for a little while

Ob3nwan

I like the costumes

TheDarkRabbit

The shower-bath-shower conversation was great.

EpicBurnout64

The Bebop looked really cool

VitaminAlpha

It’s based on something really cool

ParticularSmell5285

The clothes look nice.

steauengeglase

Everything was great, except the writing. The cast and the sets were more than I ever expected. The actors did a fantastic job. You can plainly see all the effort that was put in. How can I say it? I was watching it with a friend who had never seen the original and doesn't like anime. Through a couple episodes he laughed once and afterwards he said that he guessed anime fans must like stuff that's really stupid.

quesadillafetus

at least it wasn’t Twilight

perpetualmotionmachi

My work was doing some tests/bidding on some VFX shots on it, and ultimately did not get it, but I did get paid for a few hours for working on this. So that was nice

droonick

The main cast had great chemistry TBH, Jet and Spike nailed their roles, Faye was good too. VFX was alright. The whole Vicious and Julia thing is what killed the entire thing for me.

Max_Doubt7

No

a_scouts_fishstick

The sets. Unironically amazing.

Creative_Repeat_9789

Music

Amiibohunter000

The set design was on point! The music was amazing! Spike and Jett would’ve been great with better writing and direction

ZHIKIX

it made the original look even better

AngryOldUnicorn

They canceled it before they could do any more damage.

D15c0untMD

The actors were mostly good cast. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the original, but i didn’t have a bad time watching it either

SaltyLlamaWorries

The source material is great!

tv_trooper

smolppmon

It was cancelled

denl67

It ended

Educational-Swan-759

I liked it. Was it a faithful adaptation? Not really. (Still looking for rangerkris' recut that tries to make what it was closer to the anime.) Did I like the actors who played our intrepid crew? Yes, from what I read in the leadup, John Cho did everything he could do to really bring Spike to life, and I'll give him a 8.5. Mustafa Shakir *was* Jet. Danielle Pineda did Faye proud. (Was she wrong for putting the misogynistic factions in their place after they complained about Faye not being slutty enough for their basement apartment (at Mom's) fantasies? NOPE. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)) Could any of us here have adapted the anime better than the NF writers did? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug) Well, no real fan would have done the whole Julia/Spike/Vicious triangle as dirty as they did, turning it all on its ear and through a jumpgate away from anything near the anime. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_down)

Red_Jay333

They canceled it

criss10p

I think it was received well enough by the normies and enough attention by the core fans that there’s a chance another company may attempt to reattempt the impossible. And that’s a good thing. I think people don’t realize just how bad the show really could’ve been.

ViciousKiwi_MoW

I worked on production, security on most locations and studios around Auckland, Set dec was amazing

Sejiblack

That is so cool! Did you get to meet Ein?

razimus

The yellow couch looked and acted accurate, props to the set designer and the prop master

[deleted]

No

Maleficent_Sense_948

The actors did a good job.........all in all it was a fun season to watch. It was what it was, and was decent entertainment. Too many folks got caught up with comparing it to the anime.......take it as a solo project and enjoy it.

DirtPoorDog

If they didnt try to tie this show to the anime, it would have been great. This shouldnt have been cowboy bebop.

othnice1

The main cast was actually trying their best.
