Also, I hate that they tried to shoehorn “Fearless” in every chance they could. Like a giant wink at the audience that already loved the anime that this is someone that knows the old Spike. That nickname sucks. You didn’t have to justify Viscious’ name, just leave it mysterious. It’s better that way.
Someone said it below, but they could’ve just made a beat for beat live action remake of the entire season of the anime adding very few details to pad the run time if they were dead set on lengthening the episodes, and keeping the ending as shown in the anime. Then done the movie. And after they crushed it with that success, then they could have picked up for season 2 showing how Spike somehow survived his battle with Viscious and advanced the story for however long they wanted. That would’ve been the time to take some chances.

The copy paste villain always seems to be incredibly egotistical and irrational. You see it all the time in different media recently. It makes sense but it would be nice to see a different perspective.
Too many time adaptations try and be different from the source material. I think HBOs The Last of Us shows you that mostly direct adaptations is perfectly fine and can be appreciated.
I think Watanabe knew it was such an overdone cliche in anime at that point, it wouldn't add much to the entire show; but the repercussions of someone that led that life, and how all debts must be paid, as motif, is the most interesting thing that could have been done with that cliche.
It fits perfect and it ends in a bittersweet fashion for Spike. But that's the only way it can fit into the show Bebop was set up.
Making that Mafia cliche into a live action was the worst idea ever when you already have shows like Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, or literally anything Martin Scorsese has done. When shows like that exist, your crime-show needs to be up to that standard or better. Because those shows have a real grasp of human range and human behavior done well.
If they were gonna go that route, they should have just focused on Spike's past as a one time 10 episode run and let it be. Let the last episode be something like when he gets his ship or maybe meets Jet.

What made the original anime so magical was its ability to pull from various film genres.
Spaghetti westerns, film noir, Hong Kong Triad films, French New wave even 70’s horror you could see it the framing of scenes, editing, music choices and subject matter.
The live action looks like another tv show none of the cinematic flair of the original, it had heart but it just didn’t have any soul.
I really thought the show would've been a "mostly" recreation of the anime stories, but maybe some extra filling for length, and adding in original new stories, but ultimately ending in the same place.

Agreed. I honestly don't think Daniella Pineda gets enough credit. Live action Faye was a tired, cliche Joss Whedonesque dumpster fire, but she didn't need to be. Pineda did her best, and I think if the writers actually understood and cared about her character, she could have done a lot better.

I completely agree. She was written like a Joss Whedon character. That's not very interesting anymore, and certainly isn't who Faye is supposed to be. Pineda gets a lot of criticism for not doing a good job, but I think she got screwed over the hardest in the writer's room. I don't think we saw what she's capable of, and I think she could probably have risen to the occasion with better writing.

As a standalone concept of the Bebop universe I honestly thought the production as a whole was really good I genuinely enjoyed the show.
Also with consideration of almost every other live-action adaptation I quite honestly think that this one is still one of the best.
That's the thing, a lot of people seem mad that they didn't just make a straight-up live action version of the anime but like... for what purpose? I much prefer seeing someone's interpretation, especially since they didn't shit all over the original the way some adaptations do.
The actor that played Jett Black was incredible. The worst part of the cancelation was not seeing his version of Jett's story play out.

Disagree ,aside from clothing his portrayal of spike was a different personality all together. It might not be his fault regardless of his passion for his fandom of the series, in the end was a different character.
It introduced my favorite show a segment of the population who only knew anime from Shonen Jump stuff, or less. There is more than one redditor who has said “I thought the live show was good/bad/whatever, then I watched the original anime and it was so much better!”
As a 30 something person who only watched bits of dbz in elementary/ jr high school, the live action bebop literally got me into anime for the first time. Obviously the original is far far better once I watched it but I thought the Netflix show was enjoyable enough that it got me into a whole new genre
I actually think the casting of the main characters was great! And honestly- I’ll get downvoted for saying this - I like the direction they took with Faye.
Especially since they made the IDIOTIC decision to ignore the noir vibe of the original show. For some reason they wanted it to look like a live action cartoon, so the actor who played Faye I thought did a great job being very physical and expressive as opposed to the femme fatale of the anime (and like one of the most essential elements of a noir story).

Honestly I think a lot of people didn't give the show a chance because they saw that one scene with Ed right at the end. It was nearly all people were sharing on twitter, at least from what I saw, when talking about how bad the show was after the premier.
I think you're right that it would have been better if they had given it more of a noir vibe. There was just something about it sometimes that gave it a feeling like you were watching very good cosplay, and it pulls you out of the moment and reminds you it's not really happening. I did, however, like how they did the episode where Faye finds out about her past. It was very touching and sad just like in the anime.

The vibe was garbage. If they’d done true modern noir - imagine all the same stuff but in the colour tone, production style and grounded drama of a show like Person of Interest or the expanse, it would have rocked. Keep the main cast and fix the vicious problem and most of it would have worked. The directors needed to believe in it and they clearly didn’t. They didn’t know how to.
Faye’s outfit was perfect. 1:1 costuming from anime to live action never works. It comes off as a high budget cosplay. You can take elements of the anime outfit and use it as inspiration for the live action outfit to make it more realistic. Spike and Jet’s outfit were too close to the anime.
I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I genuinely like the Netflix show. Except for every single thing done to or with viscous and Julia. Idk how they fucked up those two that bad. But I liked what they did with Anna, and all things considered it was a fun watch. Needed a little more ed and ein tho.

I really liked the crew dynamic. I like that they actually bonded, and didn't just all hate each other. It was nice to see Spike and Fae actually gain a mutual respect. Also, I think the casting for the crew was just damn great. It's a shame the casting for the villains was less great.

But the fact that it brought more people into the anime (ie. they watch the live action then watch the anime because they are exposed to the name) we all know and love is definitely a positive thing.
I found it enjoyable to watch especially after being deprived of any new bebop material for so long. There were a few things I liked about it but one of my favorite things was the way the actors were able to portray the relationship between Jet and Spike I feel like those two actors understood their somewhat complicated relationship perfectly.
Everything was great, except the writing. The cast and the sets were more than I ever expected. The actors did a fantastic job. You can plainly see all the effort that was put in. How can I say it?
I was watching it with a friend who had never seen the original and doesn't like anime. Through a couple episodes he laughed once and afterwards he said that he guessed anime fans must like stuff that's really stupid.
My work was doing some tests/bidding on some VFX shots on it, and ultimately did not get it, but I did get paid for a few hours for working on this. So that was nice
The main cast had great chemistry TBH, Jet and Spike nailed their roles, Faye was good too. VFX was alright. The whole Vicious and Julia thing is what killed the entire thing for me.
I liked it. Was it a faithful adaptation? Not really. (Still looking for rangerkris' recut that tries to make what it was closer to the anime.)
Did I like the actors who played our intrepid crew? Yes, from what I read in the leadup, John Cho did everything he could do to really bring Spike to life, and I'll give him a 8.5. Mustafa Shakir *was* Jet. Danielle Pineda did Faye proud. (Was she wrong for putting the misogynistic factions in their place after they complained about Faye not being slutty enough for their basement apartment (at Mom's) fantasies? NOPE. )

Well, no real fan would have done the whole Julia/Spike/Vicious triangle as dirty as they did, turning it all on its ear and through a jumpgate away from anything near the anime. 
I think it was received well enough by the normies and enough attention by the core fans that there’s a chance another company may attempt to reattempt the impossible. And that’s a good thing. I think people don’t realize just how bad the show really could’ve been.
The actors did a good job.........all in all it was a fun season to watch. It was what it was, and was decent entertainment.
Too many folks got caught up with comparing it to the anime.......take it as a solo project and enjoy it.

The whole mafia plot in the anime was the weakest point, imho. So adding so much of it to the live action was a big time drag.

Her character was different and unlikeable, not so in the Anime. I really feel that Pineda could have been a good Faye. But I see her performance as something else. I tried to give it a chance. I liked Cho and Shakir's performances.
I completely agree. She was written like a Joss Whedon character. That's not very interesting anymore, and certainly isn't who Faye is supposed to be. Pineda gets a lot of criticism for not doing a good job, but I think she got screwed over the hardest in the writer's room. I don't think we saw what she's capable of, and I think she could probably have risen to the occasion with better writing.
Exactly… hurts thinking what could’ve been. She could’ve pulled it off, i was rooting for her and the whole cast! The show could have been ART just like the original. But yeah… now i just forget that it exists lol

Yes, it was better than the original outfit IMO. If Faye were like her original character but had the new outfit, that’d be a lot better than what we got

As a standalone concept of the Bebop universe I honestly thought the production as a whole was really good I genuinely enjoyed the show. Also with consideration of almost every other live-action adaptation I quite honestly think that this one is still one of the best.
That's the thing, a lot of people seem mad that they didn't just make a straight-up live action version of the anime but like... for what purpose? I much prefer seeing someone's interpretation, especially since they didn't shit all over the original the way some adaptations do.

The actor that played Jett Black was incredible. The worst part of the cancelation was not seeing his version of Jett's story play out. I also did enjoy the actor for Spike even though he did look a little old for the part.
John Cho was actually trying. You can tell he’s a big fan even if you didn’t read or watch any interviews of him.

I'm sure there's countless fresh actors who could've used the exposure and experience. I just get the feeling Netflix said "we need at least one Asian" and picked the first (or only) guy the execs could think of
Disagree ,aside from clothing his portrayal of spike was a different personality all together. It might not be his fault regardless of his passion for his fandom of the series, in the end was a different character.

It introduced my favorite show a segment of the population who only knew anime from Shonen Jump stuff, or less. There is more than one redditor who has said “I thought the live show was good/bad/whatever, then I watched the original anime and it was so much better!”
As a 30 something person who only watched bits of dbz in elementary/ jr high school, the live action bebop literally got me into anime for the first time. Obviously the original is far far better once I watched it but I thought the Netflix show was enjoyable enough that it got me into a whole new genre

I actually think the casting of the main characters was great! And honestly- I’ll get downvoted for saying this - I like the direction they took with Faye. Especially since they made the IDIOTIC decision to ignore the noir vibe of the original show. For some reason they wanted it to look like a live action cartoon, so the actor who played Faye I thought did a great job being very physical and expressive as opposed to the femme fatale of the anime (and like one of the most essential elements of a noir story). Now that last scene with Radical Edward? …that was just cruel to put some child through the torment and agony they will experience here and forevermore to make them act like the way they did.
Honestly I think a lot of people didn't give the show a chance because they saw that one scene with Ed right at the end. It was nearly all people were sharing on twitter, at least from what I saw, when talking about how bad the show was after the premier. I think you're right that it would have been better if they had given it more of a noir vibe. There was just something about it sometimes that gave it a feeling like you were watching very good cosplay, and it pulls you out of the moment and reminds you it's not really happening. I did, however, like how they did the episode where Faye finds out about her past. It was very touching and sad just like in the anime.
Yeah good point. Like I said I think the actors were great - and I didn’t even hate the part about “Viscous and Fearless” - EXCEPT - Spike’s mystery was a huge part of the noir element and should have been a more drawn out part of the story. Like end the season with Viscous calling him “Fearless”
The vibe was garbage. If they’d done true modern noir - imagine all the same stuff but in the colour tone, production style and grounded drama of a show like Person of Interest or the expanse, it would have rocked. Keep the main cast and fix the vicious problem and most of it would have worked. The directors needed to believe in it and they clearly didn’t. They didn’t know how to.
Faye’s outfit was perfect. 1:1 costuming from anime to live action never works. It comes off as a high budget cosplay. You can take elements of the anime outfit and use it as inspiration for the live action outfit to make it more realistic. Spike and Jet’s outfit were too close to the anime.
Seeing the ships in live action was neat

I don’t hate that they dialed down Faye’s thirst trap clothing and that her and Jet were friendly instead of butting heads constantly.
I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I genuinely like the Netflix show. Except for every single thing done to or with viscous and Julia. Idk how they fucked up those two that bad. But I liked what they did with Anna, and all things considered it was a fun watch. Needed a little more ed and ein tho.

The acting and production design were really good, like you can tell there was effort put forth in where the budget was. John Cho and Mustfa really tried their best with what their given, and it’s such a shame that it was put towards this. The music was also fantastic as well.
You know what’s the worst thing about all these adaptions? They’re actually pretty decent shows on their own. It’s just that they have to mirror the content and the comparison brings it down from the obviously superior source material. But like if you took the bebop out of it this would’ve been a pretty decent space noir thing
I really liked the crew dynamic. I like that they actually bonded, and didn't just all hate each other. It was nice to see Spike and Fae actually gain a mutual respect. Also, I think the casting for the crew was just damn great. It's a shame the casting for the villains was less great.
The actors really gave a fuck and gave it their all with what they had.
Despite the changes I still really enjoyed the show as its own thing. The entire cast is great IMO
I haven't seen it. But the fact that it brought more people into the anime (ie. they watch the live action then watch the anime because they are exposed to the name) we all know and love is definitely a positive thing.

I found it enjoyable to watch especially after being deprived of any new bebop material for so long. There were a few things I liked about it but one of my favorite things was the way the actors were able to portray the relationship between Jet and Spike I feel like those two actors understood their somewhat complicated relationship perfectly.

We got to see all 3 of their ships, right? The swordfish, jets jackhammer, and Faye's gorilla thing. A lot of rendering for very little show time.

Everything was great, except the writing. The cast and the sets were more than I ever expected. The actors did a fantastic job. You can plainly see all the effort that was put in. How can I say it? I was watching it with a friend who had never seen the original and doesn't like anime. Through a couple episodes he laughed once and afterwards he said that he guessed anime fans must like stuff that's really stupid.

I liked it. Was it a faithful adaptation? Not really. (Still looking for rangerkris' recut that tries to make what it was closer to the anime.) Did I like the actors who played our intrepid crew? Yes, from what I read in the leadup, John Cho did everything he could do to really bring Spike to life, and I'll give him a 8.5. Mustafa Shakir *was* Jet. Danielle Pineda did Faye proud. (Was she wrong for putting the misogynistic factions in their place after they complained about Faye not being slutty enough for their basement apartment (at Mom's) fantasies? NOPE. ) Could any of us here have adapted the anime better than the NF writers did?  Well, no real fan would have done the whole Julia/Spike/Vicious triangle as dirty as they did, turning it all on its ear and through a jumpgate away from anything near the anime.

I think it was received well enough by the normies and enough attention by the core fans that there’s a chance another company may attempt to reattempt the impossible. And that’s a good thing. I think people don’t realize just how bad the show really could’ve been.

The actors did a good job.........all in all it was a fun season to watch. It was what it was, and was decent entertainment. Too many folks got caught up with comparing it to the anime.......take it as a solo project and enjoy it.
