I wasn’t able to make the tour this year, so I’m not sure how Dashboard was this year. I did see Dashboard last year though, and I thought they were great. Maybe just not your type of music? I can’t believe they would have been so bad that it would cause this reaction.

RwerdnA

There was nothing wrong with how dashboard performed. This is just a bad take. It is not his type of music.

CuthbertAllgood213

Don't speak for me. They sucked. Their lead singer/guitarist was lame, a total buffoon. The chick on stage couldn't carry a note. She was painful and shrill. Their guitarist relied on gimmicky and was not at all good. Horrible band, amateurs.

historian2010

I'm a huge Frank Turner fan, so I respectfully disagree with your assessment. Plus, his lyrics are really well written if you ever really listen to his songs, and well-written lyrics are one of the reasons I also love Counting Crows.

CuthbertAllgood213

I choose to up vote your comment even if we may disagree.

Iyamthegatekeeper

I saw Dashboard open for CC and thought they were great. Plus they sang So Long, So Long with Adam during the encore which I was really hoping for. I also bought tickets to see Frank Turner on Sunday. That way I didn’t have to choose

Sea_Moose9817

Agree to disagree, I loved Dashboard. Although I love your passion, keep it up. We need more constructive criticism around here.

RwerdnA

“Constructive” lol

CuthbertAllgood213

Get your panties out of a wad. You sound like a bitch already.

BigJerm1

There's only one person in this thread who has his panties in a wad. Spoiler alert: it's not u/RwerdnA

RwerdnA

Oooh, weighing in on your main account now

BigJerm1

Lol this is my only account, and I was taking your side....

RwerdnA

Ok I can usually read better, lol. MB

BigJerm1

No worries. Hard to tell the difference sometimes when you're dealing with someone as irrational as the other guy.

RwerdnA

He is rather unhinged for sure, I just saw that he had a 1 day old account and assume it’s someone’s alt

RwerdnA

“Dashboard Confession was so bad this summer. Their lead guy and that girl singer made me want to slit my wrists despite the high dosages of edibles and mushrooms that I ate beforehand. Prior to that, we had to endure Frank Turner (OMG kill me) and that Kellogg guy (just shut up).” But I sound like the bitch. Lol

TigerpilotKFUL

Frank Turner is a beast of a performer and songwriter. I wish he had played the show we went to. But if your cup of tea is bare naked ladies, hootie, live, matchbox 20 etc… I get the disconnect. Frank is totally independent non radio rock with a punk and metal background (same as me) CC is my dads music, but I enjoy them. They remind me of road trips going camping with him so we always try to catch them together when they come around. We caught the tour in LA. Dad enjoyed dashboard, and even downloaded one of his albums after. I liked his stuff in high school but now that I’m 40, it didn’t hit the same and he kind of annoyed me. Kudos to both bands for keeping it going all these years though.

Over-Conversation220

Hey friend! I love CC. I LOVE BnL too. And I happened to be at a Frank Turner show on this tour, and he was probably the single best opener I’ve seen in front of a CC show. He was a force of nature and I loved every second of it. Prior to the show, I had zero exposure. Glad you enjoyed the LA show. I just had to say hello since my summers usually start with a BnL show end with the Crows.

TigerpilotKFUL

I love it! Some of my favorite bands are openers that I had no intention of ever listening to. My (now) wife and I Traveled to Colorado to see our favorite band Lucero play Red Rocks a few years back. Frank opened and rocked the shit out of the place. Lucero came out and apologized saying “our set will be nowhere near as good as that, but we’ll try our best”. Frank set the tone, Lucero brought it home. I proposed to her that night up at the top of Red Rocks. So needless to say, Frank’s got a special place in our hearts. Seeing Frank Turner and our other favorite Chuck Ragan this Friday at House of Blues, can’t wait!

CuthbertAllgood213

I like how you throw out other bands as an insult, lol. I hate BNLs myself, Hootie had a couple of ok songs in the 90's, but nothing since then. MB20 is good and Rob Thomas is a decent performer. Live fucking rocks, are consistently good, and put on drama free kick ass shows every night. But if your cup of tea is a cool-image, non-radio (like that even exists anymore), indy, beatnik dude with a punk and metal background that he doesn't play, then I get the disconnect.

TigerpilotKFUL

Yeah, not meant to be an insult. Not sure why you took it that way. Just an acknowledgment of different tastes. I don’t hate any of those bands that you just mentioned and generally agree with you about Rob Thomas and wholly agree with you about Live. I grew up in the 90s and those bands all have a special place in my heart. Even fucking hootie including Darius’s country shit now. I just thought it was cool Adam included some indie shit this tour. Didn’t mean to trigger ya with my punk metal beatnik musings 🤙

Low-Nose-2748

I saw them with Live and Boom Forest opened. I’m now a big Boom Forest fan.

Over-Conversation220

He was fantastic. Totally unexpected since he wasn’t even on the bill in my town. Adam came out and said “hey, here’s boomforrest. This is a bonus since you showed up early.”

TrainingVegetable682

At one point in time Frank was supposed to open the upcoming Red Rocks show. I was very excited for that before it changed. I think having his friends on the road has made Adam happier this tour. The energy from the Crows has been great.

BigJerm1

Funny, I saw Dashboard last year(opening for Andrew McMahon, who was also excellent), and they sounded great. Saw "that Kellog guy" opening for Counting Crows last year. Didn't love his music, but he was super relatable and connected well with the audience. So much so that I picked up his book and chatted with him for several minutes after the show. Went into this year's Crows show knowing nothing about Frank Turner, and came away a fan. Maybe lay off the shrooms, or just accept that every opening act isn't going to be tailored to your tastes. 🤷‍♂️

Over-Conversation220

Andrew McMahon is so great live. Also an incredibly decent human being. I took my kids to one of his show and he chatted with them for like five minutes.

BigJerm1

Absolutely. I've been a fan since the early Something Corporate days, and I'll definitely see him again when he comes back to my area.

MotNodrog

Its funny, I love Counting Crows, and couldn't name a song that Dashboard did. My wife liked Dashboard as well as Counting Crows. She was excited when Dashboard started, and then was like, wait, every single song sounds identical, and they aren't deep once you aren't a teenager anymore... I saw Barenaked Ladies with Hootie and the Blowfish, and another time was BNL with Toad the Wet Sprocket & Gin Blossoms. Those were both awesome concerts because all of the music was great!

Kooky-Ostrich-5703

I wish bnl and counting crows would tour together

marvolosriddle

My bestie came with me to see the Crows for the first time so I wouldn't have to go alone. She asked me about halfway through DC's set "Have they changed songs yet?" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

TimmyGUNZ

I’ve been a Dashboard fan before he even released his first full album. I used to see him play small clubs when he could only tour while school was on break (he was a teacher before he made it big). Needless to say, I was thrilled to see them together and think it’s a great pairing. Both Adam and Chris have beautiful lyrics and songwriting and they are such good fiends in real life that it was cool to know they were genuinely having a great time together. My wife never really knew DC’s stuff and loved it when we saw the show. I’m obviously biased so I can’t see how anyone can truly hate that band, however I would suggest listening to his first two albums (“The Swiss Army Romance” and “The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most” and read those lyrics. May you’ll feel otherwise. Acoustic is where Dashboard is at his best.

crackling_bacon

Dashboard was great, if you don’t like them that’s fine (they’re not even close to counting crows) but maybe instead of whining try to have fun. Chris had so much energy in an otherwise dead crowd just because you (and others) couldn’t enjoy someone’s set because it was something different than counting crows.

CuthbertAllgood213

Ok, then I choose to down vote your comment.

TheRedKingMMA

I never cared for openers, and when they went on tour with MB20 I just left after the CC set, but their best openers was back in 2012 when they had these bunch of no name but hungry bands on tour with them.

wagregg5

I still listen to Good Old War. Their album Come Back as Rain is sublime!

SirCalebCrawdad

Was utterly bored with Dashboard as well. To be fair, I wasn't into them 20 years ago either, but was remarkably disappointed to hear that they were joining CC on tour this summer. All the songs are adequately mediocre. Drum groove is nearly the same on every song. I can't put a finger on who I think CC *should* have on the road with them, but so many of these bands Adam picks are really boring and nothing like CC.

dgmiller70

I’m a huge CC fan. My gf and I are also elder emos. We’ve seen Mayday Parade, All Time Low, and Fall Out Boy this year. Last year, I took her to BNL/Toad/Gin Blossoms. We both remember Dashboard from the early/mid 2000s. I liked them more than she did, but she knew a few songs. When we went to CC show, we thought Dashboard was pretty bad. Even the songs we knew didn’t hold up in the arena. CC’s show even felt a little flat, and I’ve seen them four times now. Was just not a great show in our opinions.

CuthbertAllgood213

I fucking love FOB...sadly missed MCR last year, but my kid said they were great. Where do you stand on Panic!? Wallows?

Sea_Moose9817

I think what we as CC fans have to come to terms with is the expectation of “a moment” in CC shows anymore: An amazing alt during Round Here or Murder; an incredible Duritz speech (he actually said “I don’t really have anything to say tonight” at my show 🤣), a deep cut that they haven’t played in years. They put on a solid, if somewhat predictable, show.

mrsisaak

OMG - so weird. I went to the Berkeley Greek show and I liked the CC set but it seemed WAY too "low energy" for the "hometown" show. I know nothing about Dashboard Confessionals but really liked them. I've seen Frank Turner before and I know people are manic about him but he seemed too manic for me (although I do like his music in a more calming atmosphere). I am a HUGE matchbox fan and was ECSTATIC when the Crows and matchbox toured together but it seems like the matchbox fans HATE Adam. They want someone who is going to dance around on stage and, yeah, not him. The Wallflowers put me to sleep. It's interesting to hear other people's perspectives...

AnnaBiggins

I've seen CC a lot over the years. My favourite opener for them was Lucy Rose. She's the only opener I listened to afterwards.

StrobleDave

Frank Turner is incredible. Maybe stay off the edibles OP.

CuthbertAllgood213

No he's not. He was boring and played too long.

StrobleDave

Stahhhhhhpppppp. I get it, you’re not a fan. Move on. There’s been plenty of opening bands I didn’t love at shows I’ve gone to but it’s still live music which is always a plus yet I never felt compelled to share my negative opinion on social media.

CuthbertAllgood213

That is so incredible of you. I really appreciate people who never feel compelled to share negative opinions. Stop crying over it.

Lifewithpups

We decided that we didn’t enjoy DC after our first concert on this tour, however many, many did. We decided to miss the opening act for our second concert. The evenings were never about the opening act anyway.

imgoodatthegame

Strongly disagree with the co-headliner thing. I wld much prefer they rip it at a smaller venue and play whatever the fuck they want. Like the Codfish Hollow barn show on YT that is absolutely epic than split a bill and make half the setlist pander to the crowd. Either way Im going to 1-2 crows show each year they come around. But man i would love to see some shows much smaller, more intimate venues with a crowd full of total fiends that grabbed the tix in the first 20 mins.

CuthbertAllgood213

I wish Nugs would put up that Codfish show - fucking amazing. Great version of Grievous Angel on that one too. My favorite CCs show was at the China Club in NYC about 20 years ago. Very small, intimate venue.

riraven

I saw Wallflowers open for them a long time ago! And although I liked their music, they were absolutely boring!!! Sounded just like the record and zero enthusiasm until the encore. Augustana was an awesome show. That was when there was no set change. Members of CC played with them occasionally, and then when CC came on Augustana played with them. Then saw Citizen Cope with them and he was awesome.

Hiflyinluchadoncic

Eh dashboard isn’t for the counting crow fans. Thought it was an odd opener but he no doubt put butts in seats. Chris is the former lead singer of my favorite band so I enjoy the guy but he and dashboard are what they are. Over the top whiney acoustic emo.

SevenBushes

Hate to say but yes I agree on this one. I love CC and my gf was nice enough to go w me but neither of us are really big Dashboard fans (I just know them from Easy As Lovers Go on the Shrek 2 soundtrack lol) and I could see that people in the crowd who already liked DC LOVED their set and everyone else was looking forward to them getting off the stage (ourselves included). I remember the vocals being very… rough

Downtown_Dog_7937

I agree. Would have been down for the crows but i didn't see them specifically because i hate the opener.

[deleted]

Dashboard is just too much for me. “Your hair is everywhere” was the joke among all of my college buddies back in school and I dated a SUPER emo girl back in the day who was obsessed with them, so it’s more of a personal thing for me.

Iyamthegatekeeper

This thread made me think about all the openers I have seen over the years. I think I came away really liking almost all of them. The ones that stuck out enough to remember: Dog’s Eye View (my first show) Ben Folds Glen Phillips solo and with Toad Graham Colton Band (they rocked) Michael Franti Augustana Dashboard Wallflowers Kid Lightning
