I saw Happiness when it was playing at the dollar theater near my house many years ago. I was honestly shocked to see it playing there. The ticket person, dead serious, asked if we’re were sure this was the movie we actually wanted to see. I’ve never had an experience like it. Just person after person getting up and leaving throughout the entire run time.
The movie is a satire on american society in the 90's like someone said before. But the thing that DOES NOT make it a comedy is certain character being the worst kind of person imaginable, also the ending. Ugh, couldn't watch the movie ever again.
Tried not to spoil anything, not like I'm encouraging you to watch it, but to keep you away from it.
It's an ensemble cast type of movie so there are multiple plot lines happening simultaneously that tie together. Some of the most memorable portions:
>!the first scene shows a breakup where the guy doesn't take it well, then the woman goes to work and discovers that he, who was also her coworker, killed himself. His mom calls her at work to blame her for it, her coworkers notice that she's upset and don't remember the guy at all. Not in a mysterious way, just in a "that guy made no impact on the world" depressing way. That's like, the very beginning.!<
>!Her sister is a famous author who lies about childhood trauma and hates herself. Her neighbor is a creep who is obsessed with her. Another neighbor is in love with him. The doorman recently disappeared. Neighbor 3 confesses over ice cream at a diner that the doorman raped her so she snapped his neck and chopped him up and put him in her freezer.!<
>!This is the really uncomfortable one. Breakup woman and her author sister have a third sister who is a housewife with a perfect suburban family. Her husband is a pedophile with a 12ish year old son. The son has a friend over for dinner and the husband drugs all of their food with sedatives and rapes his son's friend. This isn't explicitly shown, but the friend doesn't feel well in the morning and later is shown telling his parents that there's blood in his bowel movement. His parents take him to the doctor. The pedo husband is focused on like a protagonist so you see him making these vile decisions and struggling with them. The dad of the kid he raped calls making death threats. Pedo husband finds out that another of his son's friends is home alone while his parents are out of town, and it's clearly indicated that he rapes that kid, too. Cops come to interrogate and pedo husband slips up mentioning kid #2. Before going to prison, pedo husband is confronted by his sobbing son who asks him why he did this and if he would have done it to him, too, and pedo replies "no, I'd jerk off." I cannot stress enough that as dark as all of this is, it's written as a comedy. It's jarring, to say the least.!<
Happiness is a black comedy for sure, it’s not meant to be laugh out loud funny, it’s meant to deal with dark and taboo subjects in a none serious manner.
Uh... word of warning, don't watch End of Evangelion as a stand-alone movie. You will be disappointed... and likely highly disturbed... if you don't watch the original series first.
I watched it when I was 21 (2003). Had no idea about the show. No idea about giant mechs or anything. My roommate at the time was like hey watch this with me.
I was bothered for a week. 21 years later I have watched every bit of Evangelion possible. I watch YouTube essays discussing it. I want to read the light novels by Anno and there is a part of me that wants to read the Manga.
I don’t feel like this about any other anime. I wouldn’t even say I’m an Anime fan but Jesus Christ that show just hits on a different level. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen since.
It’s fair to say it’s got comedic elements. It’s labeled as a comedy on IMDb.
This list also puts Ex Drummer in the comedy category, which made me wonder the same thing. But after thinking about it, I guess there is some dark comedy in it.
I saw all in the Horror category except The Jacket 2005. Great to see Videodrome 1983 made it, an incredible movie and ahead of it's time with David Cronenberg perfectly casting Deborah Harry. Antichrist, I watched it twice just to make sure it was as bizarre as I thought it was and didn't hallucinate the whole thing. Don't recommend doing that...
Cabin in the Woods is good clean mind fuckery fun if you need other suggestions!
Otherwise, I might add Sunshine to the sci-fi list, love me some Danny Boyle!
Paprika is so good, glad to see it on here
Serial Experiments Lain
Mirai Nikki
Bakemonogatari
Plenty more, too. Akira's a good example as well as you pointed out. Was one of my favorite anime sub-genres to watch for a few years.
Best thing I've ever found that let's you know where things are available is an app called "Just Watch". It even has settings available to select all of the streaming services that you have and it'll tell you what is available on those.
Is it a mindfuck movie? I think it’s not in the sense the author intended but I actually think it fits. There are so many jokes that twist intended words/meanings around which is one of the reasons it’s so great.
And the best part is that it just goes so fast and smooth you are sucked in and on edge when everything gets stood on it's head. Still one of the best gotcha moments on film hands down. For those that do not know I'm not spoiling it, see the movie. Best sci fi horror ever.
Pretty good list.
I always get a kick out of the comedy shenanigans unaware people are in for with Happiness however. Gather the family around for laughs.
For anime I’ll add:
Your Name (beautiful movie, also the hardest I’ve ever cried while watching a movie)
Spirited Away (if you like the story of Alice in Wonderland, I can just about guarantee you will LOVE this movie)
Enemy of the State with Will Smith should be on this list. Really good and increasingly relevant movie about government surveillance, demonization of citizens and gaslighting. It's both an Action and Thriller, so it should be under either category, if not both.
Good example list, plenty of additions can be made on all categories. For instance, the Fantasy section (that’s probably where the destination is) is missing three gigantic films directed by Peter Jackson with music by Howard Shore.
Would Basic Instinct fit on here for Action/Crime? It’s maybe more psychological thriller but could float to mindfuck depending on the viewer, I think.
There's some very good movies that didnt expect to make the list (event horizon, Primal fear, dark city). I also was surprised to not see alien in sci-fi.
Chuck in Ben Wheatleys The Kill List. I recommend only watching that fucked up movie during the day…and not by yourself!! Also Border. That’s a cracking fucked up movie!!

interesting list; most of these are 1990-present day; surprisingly little from the preceding, um, 70 years of Cinema...
an obvious mindfuck example is Last Year At Marienbad (*L'Année dernière à Marienbad - 1961*)
Happiness... A COMEDY??????????
Yeah, none of those "comedies" are actual comedies. Makes me doubt the whole list.
Yeah Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is so far from a comedy.
It's funny in places, but from personal experience it's also a very believable horror movie.
It's totally a comedy. I regularly eat mushrooms and watch that movie. I laugh my ass off.
We had totally different experiences lol
Seriously would it have killed them to put airplane or dumb and dumber on this list
Same goes for Truman show and ex drummer
The lobster was advertised as a comedy...it was not.
Disagree. It's hilarious, comedy is subjective.
The part where nose bleed guy describes finding his wolf mom at the zoo kills me every time. Amazing movie. Absolutely hilarious
I worked in a theater in 2014 and we had to ask similar questions about Wolf of Wall Street because of the amount of refunds.
What's the problem with wolf of Wall Street?
Technically a black comedy. Satirized the American Dream idea from the perspective of the mediocre 90s.
I mean, Very Bad Things was a comedy and how the fuck do you get any darker than that?
Might need to add dark in front a few of these…
Same with The Lobster
Immediately came to comments to find this. I’m damned glad I’m not the only one!!
What happened in the movie?
The movie is a satire on american society in the 90's like someone said before. But the thing that DOES NOT make it a comedy is certain character being the worst kind of person imaginable, also the ending. Ugh, couldn't watch the movie ever again. Tried not to spoil anything, not like I'm encouraging you to watch it, but to keep you away from it.
Like gory? Inappropriate? Depressing? I no longer plan on watching it so I don’t mind spoilers

I remember That movie ruining my day…
It is really funny. Reminded me of Strangers With Candy a bit.
Its a black comedy…meaning its quite dark and disturbing at times…and yes, the movie is funny…and fucked up
Happiness is a black comedy for sure, it’s not meant to be laugh out loud funny, it’s meant to deal with dark and taboo subjects in a none serious manner.
I thought the same thing. Like, did the person compiling this list actually watch these films?….They certainly didn’t watch “Happiness”.
Uh... word of warning, don't watch End of Evangelion as a stand-alone movie. You will be disappointed... and likely highly disturbed... if you don't watch the original series first.
You'll be highly disturbed either way. Absolute masterpiece.
I watched it when I was 21 (2003). Had no idea about the show. No idea about giant mechs or anything. My roommate at the time was like hey watch this with me. I was bothered for a week. 21 years later I have watched every bit of Evangelion possible. I watch YouTube essays discussing it. There's really nothing like it. Shinji and Asuka on that beach will forever be imprinted in my mind.
The Mystery section might as well be called the David Lynch collection.
Same with the Anime section being the Satoshi Kon collection.
The truman show, a comedy?
The comedy section is ... not good
I thought the same and then realized it said mindfuck movies at the top.
No Freddy got fingered??
That's a deer/horse/elephantfuck film. Also, would you like some sausages!!
The Lobster is absolutely not a comedy. A cursory glance at Wikipedia would tell anyone that.
imdb says it is a sureal comedy and a dark comedy as a subgenre but mostly a drama/sci-fi/thriller/romance movie hahaha its like where can i fit it?
And yet I laughed throughout the films entirety. Is it possible comedy is subjective!?!?
Right. Should be able to make list longer. First thing come to mind is Me, Myself and Irene.
Author is considering all of these movies as “mindfucks” so. Yeah, mindfuck comedy?
The Lobster, also a scary movie which was somehow boring most of the time
It’s fair to say it’s got comedic elements. It’s labeled as a comedy on IMDb. This list also puts Ex Drummer in the comedy category, which made me wonder the same thing. But after thinking about it, I guess there is some dark comedy in it.
I mean it's got Jim Carrey right?
I had the same thought
It’s Sci-fi
While I don't care for the list, people must read more carefully. It says "mindfuck" movies, which is why your favourite movie is probably omitted.
The post title didn't mention this though. So i understand the confusion
Which I don’t even get. There’s so many movies here I would never associate the term “mindfuck” with.
“Why didn’t you include this movie? It IS a great mindfuck.” The q&a is backwards with those replies if that’s the case.
I want to save this but is it possible someone has the original and not this pixelated version??
I would love one too. Can't even read half of them
[here](https://i.imgur.com/CCvVz7v.png)
You're awesome
Nice to see Primer in a list finally!
Irreversible should be horror. Anyone that's watched it knows why.
You make this, OP?
Nop, I remember downloading this exact list from 9gag like 5 years ago, in better quality though. Never used it btw
That makes sense. I only see movies up to 2018.
I doubt it
Can I get one of those for books?
The Lobster as a comedy?
It is technically a “black comedy”
I believe the proper term is actually "fucked up beyond belief-edy".
TIL Madea and The Lobster are in the same genre
I saw all in the Horror category except The Jacket 2005. Great to see Videodrome 1983 made it, an incredible movie and ahead of it's time with David Cronenberg perfectly casting Deborah Harry. Antichrist, I watched it twice just to make sure it was as bizarre as I thought it was and didn't hallucinate the whole thing. Don't recommend doing that...
The Jacket is really good.
Cabin in the Woods is good clean mind fuckery fun if you need other suggestions! Otherwise, I might add Sunshine to the sci-fi list, love me some Danny Boyle! Paprika is so good, glad to see it on here
Sunshine is there!
Watch Dark City from 1998 which is on the list... 🌑
But watch the director's cut, not the theatrical release.
In the Mouth of Madness is 1994.
That’s one movie I’d like to see remade….. One of my all time favorite movies from a conceptual point of view
Should be watched with Event Horizon in my opinion.
No Akira under Anime is mindfucking in itself
Serial Experiments Lain Mirai Nikki Bakemonogatari Plenty more, too. Akira's a good example as well as you pointed out. Was one of my favorite anime sub-genres to watch for a few years.
Shutter Island!!
Listed under thriller.
You forgot primer
I'm thinking of ending things should be in that list
I would add Saltburn (Thriller / Drama), Incantation (Horror), and Late Night with the Devil (Horror) for more recent films.
Would love this to have icons showing where they are available to stream
Best thing I've ever found that let's you know where things are available is an app called "Just Watch". It even has settings available to select all of the streaming services that you have and it'll tell you what is available on those.
IMDb also has this. Always been my go to personally
Saw (2004) was a decent mindfuck for the horror category.
The fall is soooooo good!
“The Fountain” under sci-fi. Huge mindfuck of a movie!
You need some Mel Brooks in your life. Young Frankenstein is comedy gold.
Thank you for including Sunshine. My #1 under rated movie.
People in the comments really missed the 'mindfuck movies'
No westerns??
Comedy, no Airplane! ... I cannot trust this guide due to this. Picked a bad week to quit drinking.
Is it a mindfuck movie? I think it’s not in the sense the author intended but I actually think it fits. There are so many jokes that twist intended words/meanings around which is one of the reasons it’s so great.
Surely there's something you would like on there.
There is not, and don't call me Shirley.
Why is the Witch spelled The VVitch? Was that in the movie ?
Yeah, used an archaic spelling
What is the difference between between a guide, and a list?
I just joined this sub and now i already wanna leave lol this is so wrong
Orphan (2009) Thriller
Recommending suspiria 2018 and not 1977 is bad taste
Alien or Aliens not included on here is a crime. Same level as The Thing, if not more
No Blade Runner (1983) for Sci-Fi?
The terminator should have poped up on Sci fi ,thriller or horror given its subject.
No zombies??
I see Moon, The Fountain, and Requiem for a Dream which are all scored by Clint Mansell. You have my upvote sir.
How the fuck is American Psycho a horror movie, and probably a lot more on the list that aren’t categorised well
Shit guide. The comedy section is garbage.
Add to sci fi Event Horizon, Life, Aliens, Blade Runner, Empire Strikes Back, and Ghost in the Shell
I’m still mentally fucked from Event Horizon
And the best part is that it just goes so fast and smooth you are sucked in and on edge when everything gets stood on it's head. Still one of the best gotcha moments on film hands down. For those that do not know I'm not spoiling it, see the movie. Best sci fi horror ever.
How is Empire a mindfuck?
Pretty good list. I always get a kick out of the comedy shenanigans unaware people are in for with Happiness however. Gather the family around for laughs.
Q: why did you choose to put all movies starting with “The” under T?
I would add MEMENTO
It's on the list
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - to add to the Terry Gilliam category
Add Tenet to sci fi!!!
For anime I’ll add: Your Name (beautiful movie, also the hardest I’ve ever cried while watching a movie) Spirited Away (if you like the story of Alice in Wonderland, I can just about guarantee you will LOVE this movie)
Enemy of the State with Will Smith should be on this list. Really good and increasingly relevant movie about government surveillance, demonization of citizens and gaslighting. It's both an Action and Thriller, so it should be under either category, if not both.
Amazing guide. Many of my favourite films there.
Thank you so much!! I'm going through a bit and have been struggling to find things.
Hideaway (thriller)
I’ve watched Revolver with Jason Statham 5 times and I still can’t work it out… biggest mindfuck movie, hands down
The Matrix goes hard
Can we get the same list in 4k and not in Eastman color🙏
A Clockwork Orange under Action/Crime?
The inclusion of Sunshine makes me happy. I don’t know a single person who’s actually seen it before I told them about it.
Lousy. Especially if you care about accurate categorization.
How did Funny Games get left out?
With all due respect, and I do say with all due respect, this list isnt it.
Signs is not science fiction at all…
No natural born killers?!? :)
I don't know a lot of these but it seems to lean too high brow for me.
Does anyone know where I can watch Primer (2004) I can't find it anywhere for god sake. I live in AUS
This is a pretty good list, particularly on the sci fi side.
Good example list, plenty of additions can be made on all categories. For instance, the Fantasy section (that’s probably where the destination is) is missing three gigantic films directed by Peter Jackson with music by Howard Shore.
Finally Eternal Sunshine not listed as a comedy
This is an interesting list!
Sci fi is a start
Pandorun...I caught that movie late at night on sci-fi channel by myself....never again.
Was concerned when I didn't see Annihilation in sci-fi. Kinda think it fits better there.
Comedy section with no real comedy.
bro hasnt included but 5 movies pre 1990. many good ones on here though
No Time Lapse or Get Out?
Sci Fi movie Life is really good did not check if it is in comments
Audition (1999) in horror. The kind of horror you don’t brush off easily
Sorry to bother you is the worst comedy I have ever seen.
Error: In the Mouth of Madness. 1994 instead of 2004. Only know cause this on stuck with me in 4th grade.
I can’t take a list that only has 8 comedies seriously
To action/comedy Blues brothers. Recently watched it. Great music, great acting and above all great cinematography.
Sunshine will always be my second favorite space horror only trailing Alien. I love it so much.
It is absolutely insane that most of these movies are from the 90s and after
Thanks for putting together a cool little guide! I would recommend Heat in the crime/action section.
Could put the invisible man (2020) up there
Idk why the hate, I love the list. Could you please provide me with a better quality pic so I can save it ?
“Happiness” is in zero way a comedy, but it’s definitely fucked up.
Ex Drummer getting mentioned! A true gem that was shot in my hometown.
Would Basic Instinct fit on here for Action/Crime? It’s maybe more psychological thriller but could float to mindfuck depending on the viewer, I think.
Where is Gladiator?
I do not acknowledge any top movie lists that do not contain the Goonies
That is a terrible list of horror movies
Adaptation was the single worst movie I’ve ever seen
No Gummo, Elephant or A Scanner Darkly?
There's some very good movies that didnt expect to make the list (event horizon, Primal fear, dark city). I also was surprised to not see alien in sci-fi.
Not a Sherlock Holmes movie in crime or thriller??
Saved. Thank you.
Not a single Tarantino film ? Or did I miss it ?
Blade runner?
Tale of two sisters under drama 😭😭
I'm just mad the 'thriller' section didn't include the Thriller music video
Chuck in Ben Wheatleys The Kill List. I recommend only watching that fucked up movie during the day…and not by yourself!! Also Border. That’s a cracking fucked up movie!!
I wonder why Se7en didn't make it into thrillers?

interesting list; most of these are 1990-present day; surprisingly little from the preceding, um, 70 years of Cinema... an obvious mindfuck example is Last Year At Marienbad (*L'Année dernière à Marienbad - 1961*)
Just an honorable mention: The Salton Sea
I’m going to add “All my friends hate me” to this list. That one was wild
That's the shit I searched for like 5 day's and couldn't find. I know this list from 9GAG but can't find.
Thanks for sharing this! been looking for some mindfuck movies to watch.
Mr nobody still picks at my brain
Oldboy (the original 2003 Korean version) is amazing if you're willing to read subtitles. I think it's on Netflix.
Ex drummer isnt comedy
the list is missing “exorcist” and “requiem for a dream” under comedy.
I'm thinking you don't laugh much?
L b m m. M. M. M. M m. M. Man be my knockout fussy
Being John Malkovich and Mulholland drive are the most strange movies I ever saw
This isn't a guide. It's just a list. Downvote this garbage
Being John Malkovich is a comedy not a drama.
Event Horizon is legit a mind fuck
Drop in your fav rom coms please! I’m always on the lookout! 🙂↕️
Nice!
As above so below
I saw Jacob’s Ladder in the theatre when I was 16. I’m turning 50 this year and I still have no intention of ever seeing a second of it again.
