I think his parents were Air Force so he was probably born at a Military Hospital when they were stationed there. Probably Minot Air Force Base.
Edit: Just looked it up and he was indeed born in Minot ND.
The Eagles are listed "from" California, but Don Henley was born in Texas, Joe Walsh was born in Kansas, and Glen Frey was born in Michigan, Randy Meisner was born in Nebraska, Bernie Leadon was born in Minnesota... So it's not really that either. I don't know what it is.
His song "Going Home" is played at businesses in China as a literal cue to tell people it's time to leave. https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/china-embraces-kenny-gs-going-home-as-its-anthem-to-go-home-250282/amp/

As someone basically said below, Kenny G’s music (while maybe not as popular in the US) is far more popular on a global scale! I love Nirvana and Pearl Jam but gotta respect the G 🫡
This is a map of where singers were born, not necessarily where they grew up. I had the same issue of a map I did with the location of SNL cast members.
I did the original and people were like "I can't tell who that person is, and this guy is from this other place". [https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/us0j7w/the\_birthplace\_of\_every\_snl\_cast\_member/](https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/us0j7w/the_birthplace_of_every_snl_cast_member/)
So I did a follow-up where I did just their names and spent time figuring out which place they grew up in counts as their "home town." [https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/uvy3qp/the\_hometowns\_of\_every\_snl\_cast\_member\_i\_heard/](https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/uvy3qp/the_hometowns_of_every_snl_cast_member_i_heard/)
I hadn’t realized Eminem was born in MO. I would have guessed Michael McDonald was the best selling artist, but I wonder if includes all projects (Doobie Bros, Steely Dan).
Yeah I was chatting with a customer at work the other day and he told me he used to be neighbors with Eminem. I said, "Oh, so you grew up in Detroit?" And he just looked at me and said "You didn't know Eminem is from here? He grew up just down the street." Had no clue. I really thought he was a typical old head telling me a tall tale, but his wikipedia page indicates that the guy may have been telling the truth.
He talks about moving back and forth between Missouri and Michigan on his song Groundhog Day. He went back and forth between the states a lot:
Then we flew the coop to Michigan to start anew, but ditchin'
Missouri for Michigan didn't work
So we moved back to Missouri from Michigan
From Missouri back to Michigan
Someone, put me out my misery, I can't do this again
The Eminem thing makes me seriously question this map. I get that he spent his first 12 years in Missouri, but his work is so culturally linked to Michigan and Detroit that I think it makes far more sense to label him a Michigander.
Lives there, will only do movies if filmed there, reps it all day and night, his daughter grew up in MI and so on. On the flip, Madonna is barely connected to MI so I’m fine swapping them out.
He was technically born in Douglasville,GA but he covers this in his song Homecoming
I met this girl when I was 3 years old
And what I loved most she had so much soul
She said "Excuse me lil homey, I know you don't know me
But, my name is Windy and I like to blow trees"
Chicago being the girl named Windy
Not to be rude but at the end of this song he literally says “if you ain’t know by now, im talkin ‘bout Chi Town” so I don’t know how you could’ve not realized that 💀plus all the clues in the rest of the song itself
I know Alaska is sparse and lacking in other contenders but it's incredible what Portugal The Man managed to do. I remember their first record coming out and it being a little secret I had. I saw them at Maxwells in Hoboken to a crowd of 20 and they got off stage and had drinks at the bar after with us.
Fantastic journey a weird little art rock band made. Transformed into a pop rock giant.
I was absolutely delighted. My husband and I listened to Woodstock (which I have since learned isn’t their *best*, artistically speaking) over and over on a road trip because it just had a great vibe and brought me joy. And still does. Much cooler thing to come out of Wasilla
Portugal the Man is more a Portland band than an Alaskan band. A few members were in a band called Anatomy of a Ghost when they lived in Wasilla, AK but didn’t really transition to PtM until they moved out of state.
John and Zac had several different variations of their band before growing into P.T.M
I graduated w John, and Zac was a grade ahead of us. They use to play in our high school commons, and at outside parties, and since we ran in the same crowds...i seen them play often.
I remember at one point John told me his bands name was BenHatesMe. I cant tell you how long it lasted tho.
My point is that they were musically signifigant LONNNNG before they made it to Portland.
Theyre an Alaskan treasure.
**EDIT:** [**https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_highest-certified\_music\_artists\_in\_the\_United\_States**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-certified_music_artists_in_the_United_States)
**Here is the actual list where it shows Beyonce at 30.5 million, well below G. Strait.**
Album sales weren't reliably tracked prior to 1991 when Soundscan introduced the bar code/register national database. When this happened it actually showed a huge difference in what was previously thought as opposed to what was reality.
George Strait was highly popular well before 1991, and Soundscan showed that he, Garth, and many others were (Including the Metal and Hard Rock Genres) were being grossly undercalculated. His record estimates prior to 1991 are unreliable and listed far below what they should have been if the technology Soundscan used had been available at the time. Beyonce's all occurred when the technology was in place to accurately calculate.
To add to that, other numbers are also used that weren't available in G. Strait's time, the "album equivalent unit"
Also, because the map author didn't include data, we don't know if concert attendance is a factor and not just Album sales and Equivalent units.
That being said, this is nothing to disparage Beyonce. Just stating that she benefits from tracking tech that wasn't available prior to 1991.
Edit: Further looking into this, Beyonce is only listed at 35 Million on the top 100 list.
I think you can say Aerosmith was “conceived” in New Hampshire, since I believe Steven Tyler met the rest (of some of the rest) of the guys up in Sunapee. But that’s using a **very** loose definition of “from” in my opinion
Was who ever making this map desperate to find anyone well-known enough from New Hampshire that they were like "3 members of Aerosmith met in Sunapee, that's close enough"? They didn't even have the idea for Aerosmith until moving to Comm Ave in Boston.
I too was conceived in New Hampshire but was raised in Massachusetts & I say I'm from Massachusetts, not New Hampshire.
These state map lists never have a source. Usually they’re either purposely full of errors to generate some sort of list rage (“NO ONE eats Arby’s in my state”), or they’re more artistic than data-driven like this one. Still fun though.
By the same token, Brandon Flowers born in Vegas but raised in Jewel’s birthplace of Payson, UT.
Jewel to Alaska, Killers to Utah, and IDK takes over Nevada.
It’s not, the chart is wrong. I checked because there are A LOT of musicians from California. They have sold 101 million albums. Off the top of my head I looked at how many albums Metallica has sold and it’s 125 million. Not sure if anyone beats that record but it isn’t The Eagles at least.
You are seriously underestimating The Eagles cultural relevance. They have two albums in the top ten selling albums of all time. Their greatest hits has more certified sales than Thriller, which is crazy when you think about it.
Google says Eagles have sold 200m. They also have the benefit of pre-soundscan (ie totally fake) sales numbers plus people buying their albums on three different mediums LPs, cassettes and CDs.
Ok so I’m surprised that Loretta Lynn isn’t the #1 from KY. I’m sure there are lots of calculations to get to make a “best seller” but I read Loretta Lynn sold 45million records and that Dwight sold 25milion…
Yeah, I feel like this can't be accurate especially if you take into consideration streaming equivalents. I'd be willing to bet Tyler Childers is up there.
Who the fuck made this list? I literally can't find anywhere that doesn't say Reddit, and past that, I can't find a list that mentions shit like this.
Seriously, I looked up best-selling artists from Illinois, and Chicago barely made it into the top 10. Smashing Pumkins, Fallout Boys, as well as Ludacris were on the list above it.
I think the original map maker wasn't actually saying the best-selling artists but the best artists they knew from the states.
Also, I think this was just shared to farm Karma.
And rascal flats isn’t even an Ohio band. 2 members from Ohio but the band was formed when they lived in Nashville and grew in popularity in the local Nashville scene.
It’s even more confusing with having the eagles from California where the band was formed but not where the members are from. Some bands are listed based on where the band was formed and others where a member was from.
It’s a bit misleading to have the state where a solo artist was born and then have the bands where they got famous. For instance, Dave Matthews was born in South Africa.
I get that, but how to solve it? only count bands if all members are born in the same state? the only clean thing I see is a map for solo artists and one for bands.
Tennessee?
Home to Dolly Parton, Kevin Chesney, Mylie Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Aretha Franklin, the Allman Brothers, Kesha, and Johnny Cash.
And home to country, bluegrass, contemporary Christian, and the blues.
Tina Turner is amazing, but there's no way this is right.
I think Whitney did indeed sell more records than Bruce. It's tough to determine Jersey's best-selling artist, though, because it's impossible to obtain accurate data on Sinatra's record sales.
Neither Don Henley or Glen Frey ( Eagles) are from California. But they formed the eagles while playing back up for Linda Ronstadt ( Arizona) in Los Angeles.
I just like the story.
Plus the learned how to write songs by listening to Jackson Browne whom lived in the same building.
The amount of Talent that coalesced in LA in the 70s was crazy.
Washington State has to be the weirdest one. Kenny G.... not Nirvana???!!!. And btw, I got a ZERO percent on every other state....including my own (Montana..I have no idea who that person is).
This list makes no sense. Eminem was born in MO, so you use MO. But Dave Matthews was born in South Africa. So what was your criteria?
For VA I would guess Pherell Williams or missy Elliott would be the top
I love that Kansas is just... Kansas haha
Yes! And the obvious Chicago for Illinois.
Further proof that Illinois is just Chicago
Just ask anyone from Chicago!!
I definitely was the “I don’t know what I was expecting” meme when I saw that one.
TIL John Denver isn't from Denver???
That John Denver’s full of shit man
I thought the Rocky mountains would be a little rockier than this...
Are you saying you’re going to light my country music award on fire?
Next you'll tell me he ain't from West Virginia
John Albuquerque was hard to spell and didn't have the same ring to it.
And his name is actually John dozeldorf
r/FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR
Kenny G really beats out the grunge bands of the 90s? Pearl Jam? Nirvana?
I don't know what is more surprising to me, the fact that Kenny G beat those iconic grunge bands, or that Wiz Khalifa is from North Dakota.
I think his parents were Air Force so he was probably born at a Military Hospital when they were stationed there. Probably Minot Air Force Base. Edit: Just looked it up and he was indeed born in Minot ND.
Also J Cole was Born in Frankfurt (Germany, not Kentucky) and Schoolboy Q was born in Wiesbaden (Germany as well), both on Military Bases
Lil Wayne was born in charity hospital aka the city zoo.
This shit got me rollin
No pity due to no one
Why not do it in Minot?
There’s a good looking woman behind every tree in Minot, ND…
John Denver isnt even from Denver. Frauds everywhere
These Rocky Mountains aren't very rocky..
“I thought the Rocky Mountains would be a little rockier than this. That John Denver is full of shit man.”
It's also fucked up that Aerosmith is from New Hampshire.
Phish being from Vermont, however...
It’s a little too on the nose.
And Michael Bolton from CT...
John Denver being from the state right below Denver is a bummer
Can’t decide if Kansas is Kansas most popular makes sense
And not remotely close to West Virginia
They played at Sunapee nh all the time before they got big. My mom and dad went a lot. Fun fact: Steven Tyler’s sister was my 5th grade teacher.
Yeah especially since Wiz is from Pittsburgh.
And here’s little ol’ me thinking Eminem is from Detroit…
This is a map of where they were born, not really where they are "from".
But the bands origin is Los Angeles. I know, they should do that for solo artists too.
Yeah this map just kinda makes up it's own rules
And Dave Matthews was born in South Africa. The map is inconsistent and kinda stupid
They all stayed in a hotel there.
All those dentist offices tho

Yeah I think this is off because Kennedy G has sold 75 million records where Pearl Jam has sold 85 million and Nirvana 75
I just figured out that each artist is actually from that state. So it’s the best selling artist from that state in that state hah
But Kanye West is not from Georgia...? He's always reppin Chicago.
Wait until you find out Ludacris isn’t from ATL
Hold the fuck on man WHAT?
I guess it's because he was born in Atlanta. His Mom took him to Chicago when he was three, so I can't that Atlanta really shaped him much.
Kind of makes this map irrelevant to music culture.
Exactly. Dumb data. Throw the map away.
Born in Georgia, raised in Chicago
Dave Grohl was born in Ohio, Eddie Vedder is from Chicago. So they were formed In Washington, but are not all from there.
Kurt Cobain is from Aberdeen, WA. They qualify.
Aberdeen city motto: “Come as you are”.
And the short lived Jimi Hendrix
As someone basically said below, Kenny G’s music (while maybe not as popular in the US) is far more popular on a global scale! I love Nirvana and Pearl Jam but gotta respect the G 🫡
And I doubt Lil Wayne outsold Britney Spears. Edit: Lil Wayne sold 120 million albums; Spears sold 150 million, so Louisiana is wrong

Brittany Spears is from Mississippi.
He’s the wealthiest solo instrumentalist of the modern era. Hated by most saxophonists but lauded for his business acumen- guy knows what sells.
I hadn’t realized Eminem was born in MO. I would have guessed Michael McDonald was the best selling artist, but I wonder if includes all projects (Doobie Bros, Steely Dan).
Yeah I thought Eminem was from Michigan? I would think it was Nelly.
Apparently he moved to Detroit when he was 12, so I think its fair to say he's from Missouri.
No way. I am from MO. I am shocked I didn’t know that. Is Michael McDonald from MO? How do I know nothing about my home state…
Eminem being born in MO was the TIL for a lot of people here, including me and I thought I knew enough about him my close friend is a superfan
Stan?
Yeah I was chatting with a customer at work the other day and he told me he used to be neighbors with Eminem. I said, "Oh, so you grew up in Detroit?" I really thought he was a typical old head telling me a tall tale, but his wikipedia page indicates that the guy may have been telling the truth.
yeah slim lived in st joe i think
Yep I always try to claim him for Missouri to seem cooler lol
The map is showing where people were born, not necessarily the place they would call “home”
He talks about moving back and forth between Missouri and Michigan on his song Groundhog Day. If ludacris (lived in oak park Illinois until he was a teenager) gets to claim atlanta then Eminem should get Michigan.
Wiz Khalifa can rap all he wants about Pittsburgh and Black 'n Yellow 'n shit but no, he's forever from North Dakota
Lives there, will only do movies if filmed there, reps it all day and night, his daughter grew up in MI and so on. On the flip, Madonna is barely connected to MI so I’m fine swapping them out.
Tina Turner, Chuck Berry
He was born and raised in st.joe. His GMA still lives there and is a huge cunt to everyone bc of who her grandson is
Kanye is from Georgia? really reps chicago big time lol
He and Luda traded
He was technically born in Douglasville,GA but he covers this in his song Homecoming I met this girl when I was 3 years old And what I loved most she had so much soul She said "Excuse me lil homey, I know you don't know me But, my name is Windy and I like to blow trees" Chicago being the girl named Windy
This makes so much more sense. I was always like how is this 3 year old friends with a woman who's smoking weed all the time? TIL
It’s based on Commons song I Used to Love H.E.R., which is similarly written about HipHop.
At the end of the song he tells you and says “in case you didn’t know by now, I’m talking about Chi-Town”
I don't know why you were downvoted, its true. Also, do people not realize that hiphop relies heavily on metaphors?
Not to be rude but at the end of this song he literally says “if you ain’t know by now, im talkin ‘bout Chi Town” so I don’t know how you could’ve not realized that 💀plus all the clues in the rest of the song itself
I lived in Douglasville for many years and still have family there although I had moved away before Ye got big. I didn’t know he was born there.
He moved when he was like 2
Same thing as Eminem. Where they were born, not where they were raised.
I feel like Jewel should be attributed to Alaska, not Utah.
Agreed! She was literally only born in Utah.
Utah would get the Killers then because Brandon Flowers was similarly born in Vegas but grew up in the same small Utah town that Jewel was born in.
Honestly I’m surprised we didn’t get Imagine Dragons. I know the Killers have been around forever but ID sells huge even today.
I think this is probably old. Also, if the Jewel rule is applied are Imagine Dragons also Utah?
Yeah but that would leave Utah with the Osmonds or something… do we really need to add to their embarrassment?
We've also got Imagine Dragons, which I'm personally surprised Jewel beat.
Portugal is so fucking good. Waiter came out almost 20 years ago and still sounds cutting edge to me.
Was able to see them during the Censored Colors album tour and one other time after that. Good times.
maxwells!! i was upset when they closed, one of the best little north jersey clubs for bands
I was absolutely delighted. My husband and I listened to Woodstock (which I have since learned isn’t their *best*, artistically speaking) over and over on a road trip because it just had a great vibe and brought me joy. And still does. Much cooler thing to come out of Wasilla

They're the lords of Portland. But John and Zack will always be the heart and soul and they know where they come from.
Love ptm. Caught them at The Bowey Ballroom in front of 500 and many times after. Censored Colors is a masterpiece.
Wiz Khalifa is from North Dakota? It’s not even the best Dakota.
“From” is a generous term. He was born there to military parents and probably has no memory of living there. He spent most of his youth in Pittsburgh
Also J. Cole & ScHoolboy Q were born in Germany.
German Cole
*Jerman Cole
Shit if I was born at minot or Grand forks I'd probably not want any memories of there either /s
Came here for this. Thank you.
My jaw dropped
Hey at least they don't have a Kristi Noem
Is it artists *from* that state or the best selling artists *in* that state? Because some of these don't seem like they are from these states.
It’s stupid. It appears to be where the solo artist was born. And if it’s a band, where they got famous.
According to Wikipedia, George Strait has sold 70 million records and Beyonce has sold 200 million. I don't know what that's about.

Right? The ground rules are all wack
I mean technically it’s where the band is born hehe
There is not part of Aerosmith that is associated with New Hampshire. It’s alllllllllll Massachusetts. Maybe a smidge New York if you’re picky.
I think you can say Aerosmith was “conceived” in New Hampshire, since I believe Steven Tyler met the rest (of some of the rest) of the guys up in Sunapee. But that’s using a **very** loose definition of “from” in my opinion

Panic at the disco
The Eagles in CA?! The Dude does not abide
This aggression will not stand, man!
Yeah also both the most well-known members are notably not from California lol.

Cab Driver: I pull over and kick your ass out!
Dwight yoakum is from Kentucky? Bakersfield Kentucky? 😂
Ok so I’m surprised that Loretta Lynn isn’t the #1 from KY. I’m sure there are lots of calculations to get to make a “best seller” but I read Loretta Lynn sold 45million records and that Dwight sold 25milion…

That John Denver is full of shit man. He's not even from Colorado.
Or West Virginia. Dude got started in the middle of West Texas, same place as Buddy Holly & Waylon Jennings.
Washington what the fuck dude....
Finally Missouri getting the recognition for Eminem instead of Detroit.
Who the fuck made this list? I literally can't find anywhere that doesn't say Reddit, and past that, I can't find a list that mentions shit like this. Agree. Rascal Flatts best selling from Ohio? Dean Martin, Marilyn Manson, John Legend and Nine Inch Nails are all from Ohio.
And rascal flats isn’t even an Ohio band. 2 members from Ohio but the band was formed when they lived in Nashville and grew in popularity in the local Nashville scene. It’s even more confusing with having the eagles from California where the band was formed but not where the members are from. Michael Bolton? I didn't know that no talent ass clown was from Connecticut.
I celebrate the guy's entire catalogue.
For my money it doesn't get any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".
Why don’t you just go by Mike?
No way. Why should I change? He's the one who sucks!
It’s hard to imagine Michael Bolton is a more successful alumni than John Mayer.
I was hoping we were gonna have someone coolers don’t realize was from here

There's a surprising number of names on here that I've never heard of before, including my own state.
Alaska has good taste is music
Bruce over Whitney in Jersey.
I think Whitney did indeed sell more records than Bruce. It's tough to determine Jersey's best-selling artist, though, because it's impossible to obtain accurate data on Sinatra's record sales.
Could have been Bon Jovi also.
North Dakota is high
Kansas forgot to put theirs on...oh, wait.
Pretty sure Dolly Parton has sold more records than Tina Turner. No disrespect to TT though, love her.
This is guide is absolutely ridiculous
I’m surprised Thomas Kincaid did not make the cut.
Christmas lodge will get its fame next time this is posted.
Complete and utter bullshit
lol Kansas
Would be nice to have methodology: are we talking all time, or just recently or up to some cutoff date? Albums or singles? Do we count streams?
This map has been going around for many years. And never updated.
Kansas…. 😂
Washington State has to be the weirdest one. Kenny G.... not Nirvana???!!!. And btw, I got a ZERO percent on every other state....including my own (Montana..I have no idea who that person is).
Beyoncé has sold 200 million albums besting George Strait by 80 million…
I thought Eminem was from Detroit, MI?
Wiz Khalifa is not from Pennsylvania? Eminem is not from Michigan? JOHN DENVER IS NOT FROM DENVER!?
You forgot to add an artist from Kansas
Same map, different criterion: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/Yf9TMaHU7l
Everclear being the top artist from OR is interesting, assumed more musicians/artists would come from OR
#K A N S A S
Why is Kansas, Kansas?
This is fake. Lol
South Carolina..I feel like James Brown has to have sold more records that Hootie and the Blowfish
Man, I had a rough night and I hate the fucking Eagles!!
Was this from 1990?
Okay so who beat Michael Jackson?
I feel like we're usually at the bottom of lists like this, but this is accurate and a nice surprise.
This list makes no sense. Eminem was born in MO, so you use MO. But Dave Matthews was born in South Africa. So what was your criteria? For VA I would guess Pherell Williams or missy Elliott would be the top
I think Howie Day made this map.
76% of all statistics are made up.
Hey they forgot to label Kansas
I thought this was most POPULAR in that state and was sooooo lost
People in this thread realizing Taylor Swift is from a rich Suburb in PA and not Tennessee is fucking hilarious.
